He was angry, not realizing Lucy was still holding him, the space around him seemed to darken, shadows reached out for the girls, lights flickered. Charlie noticed Lucy was coughing, the girls ran away.
“Shit! Lucy let go,” he tried to calm as quick as he could, “you gotta let go!”
“No, I deserve this!”
“You’re coughing up blood, Lucy! You don’t deserve to die,” he pried het off.
She turned around and puked in a trashcan.
After school, they all met at Marcie’s house to go over her footage, and figure out what was happening to them.
“So it was an asteroid,” Lamar said, watching the footage.
“How are you feeling, Lucy,” Schroeder asked.
“Better… thank you guys for being as calm as you can. Most of you, anyway.”
They looked at Patricia.
“What? I’m calm now!”
Lucy shook her head.
“Yeah, that’s what happened, it blew up on my chest.”
“Given what’s obviously some sort of cosmic radiation; we seem to have all been granted enhanced abilities, perhaps I may be able to build some equipment to do some testing,” Marcie explained.
“We all seem to be empowered based on certain characteristics, we know Lucy is an empath, Charlie deals out bad luck, your intellect has increased,” Lamar said.
“I apparently can hear very well, and manipulate sound,” Schroeder explained.
“I’m really fast and really strong,” Patricia glared at Lucy.
“I seem to have telekinesis,” Linus added.
“What about Lamar and Sally,” Charlie asked.
“I can make energy things…?”
“Yeah, your hyper ass would,” Lucy laughed.
“I’ve got really sharp nails. Somebody pissed me off and I sliced through a locker… I started to lose it almost couldn’t reel it in.”
“I wonder if anybody else got with one of these asteroid pieces,” Marcie wondered.
“I need some fresh air,” Lucy got up.
“Hey,” Lamar greeted, stepping on the back porch.
“Hey.”
“You had quite the revelation, huh?”
“Yeah, and now Trish wants to clobber me. She was already a possible threat without the powers.”
“She got a crush on him,” he lit a cigarette.
“Yeah and I think he’s the only one that doesn’t know,” she stole his cigarette for a puff.
“Stealing my cig,” he teased.
“You made me curious. I think unless I can’t control this, I’m never leaving my room again.”
“Seems like it’d be beneficial for being a psychiatrist.”
“Probably, but I’ve been sick all day, raging headaches, and I didn’t tell Charlie, but that hug felt like I was being stuck with thousands of pins and needles. I’m afraid I can’t function like this.”
“We’ll get the hang of it, if it doesn’t kill us.”
“You’re worried about what might happen to you.”
“Lucy… you’re too cute to be alone. I gotta admit; when I first got here, I thought you were cute.”
“At least somebody does… I’ve been chasing Schroeder for years.”
“And you’re being a try-hard… and a bitch… guys don’t like that stuff, it’s repulsive. Besides; what if you did win him over, and it didn’t work out?”
“I don’t know.”
“None of us are going to be the same after this. And I think you’re the cutest you’ve ever been, right now. There might be somebody else out there for you,” he handed her his cigarette, walking back inside.
“Lamar,” she whispered.
“…unless some other kids got hit by these, and decided to turn villain; what we can do is pointless,” Linus explained, “it’s not like we can run around gallivanting around showing them off, so what; we can get taken away and experimented on?”
“Imagine the sports scholarship I could get,” Patricia exclaimed.
“Imagine what governing bodies would think if you were running bases at seventy miles an hour, and baseballs exploding when you swing the bat,” Marcie spoke sardonically.
“Well I guess that sucks for us who’s powers are obvious, I wanted to take care of some bullies,” Sally pouted.
“What sucks for obvious powers,” Lamar walked in.
“Keeping under wraps, so we don’t end up government experiments,” Linus answered.
“Did the ‘ol fussbudget go home,” Patricia asked.
“Naw, she needed to get away from you.”
“Why are you so mad at her,” Charlie asked.
“Reasons,” she snapped.
They all just exchange glances.
Lamar sighed, “just because he said what he said, doesn’t mean what you think it does, or that she feels like you think she does.”
“I know what I heard!”
“I’m surprised your hard-headed ass hears anything. It’s called platonic love; something friends develop over time. Lucy loves him as a friend, not in love with him like you are,” he scolded.
“What?! I am not-”
“Yes you are,” they said together.
“Wow, really? I had no clue,” Charlie said.
“We know,” they said together.
“Well the cat’s out of the bag, now,” Patricia sighed.
“Is it a bad thing, or was he never supposed to know,” Sally asked.
“Kinda, on account of I wasn’t trying to hurt anybody but myself, since Marcie is in love with me… and I love her too. She always likes holding my hand when we’re alone. I thought it was best things be the way they are.”
“Polyamory exist,” Lamar rolled his eyes. “I don’t need Lucy to read a room, either.”
“What about me?”
“You and Schroeder need to hash it out, the less stress we have, the better, if we weren’t freaks before; we really are now, we all we got in this bullshit, and some of us seem to be triggered emotionally.”
“What next; you going to assign us code names,” Patricia spat.
“You wanna wear yellow and blue spandex, too,” Lamar retorted.
“It’s quite alright, it doesn’t matter how Schroeder feels; I can’t live a normal life like this. I can barely stand being around all of you, being around a thousand students is debilitating.”
“Lucy, we’ll all get through it, it was hard for me too, you think I like wearing earplugs,” he held her arm.
“I guess you were telling the truth, this whole time, huh,” her eyes swelled with tears.
“What do you mean? Why do I feel like crying?
“Touch makes emotions stronger,” Marcie wiped her eyes.
“This is too much,” Sally sniffed.
“I’m sorry guys,” Lucy cried.
“Well you’re an even bigger genius now, so maybe you can help the rest of them control themselves,” Patricia cried.
Lamar pulled Lucy in a hug, “maybe we should call it a night, for now.”
Days later, they’re a little bit better off at keeping their cool, though still not full control for some of them. Lucy and Charlie having the biggest trouble, Linus seems to be getting the hang of his, surprising nobody, Sally’s been doing fine. Patricia has been helping Marcie find junk she needs to build equipment for researching what happened to them. After school, they met up at Sal’s junkyard after it closed.
“Why are we here,” Sally wondered.
“So you all can get the hang of your powers, and we can see what they really are,” Marcie replies.
“How’re we supposed to get in there?”
“Like this,” Linus lifted her up over the fence, making her squeal.
Linus lifted two more of them, struggling slightly, Patricia climbed the fence to catch them, sitting them down on the other side while Linus caught his breath.
“Hmmm… I wonder,” Schroeder crouched, leaping up, using sound waves to clear the fence, “it worked!”
Lamar lifted Marcie up to Patricia, who swung her over, so the others could lower her down, Linus lifted himself over. They made their way to one of the deepest areas of the junkyard.
“So, you guys ever get that love triangle shit squared away,” Lamar asked Marcie and Patricia, hanging back.
“I looked up polyamory; it seems logical enough, since one person truly can’t provide everything a partner needs. We’re already good friends, so I have no problem sharing,” Marcie answered.
“I never thought I could feel that way about a girl, but I’ll give it a try,” Patricia added.
Marcie set up the equipment in an open spot.
“Okay… so I’m going to stick these small receivers on you all to read your bodies, when you use your powers,” Marcie stuck the small devices on everybody.
“Ooooo! I’ve been itching to use these powers,” Sally boasted.
“Well let’s go,” Patricia ran to a small car, dragging it out, with a spin, tossing it at Sally,” catch!”
Sally charged up green energy, blasting the car, ripping it to shreds, before she could react, Patricia tossed a pickup cab at her, the green energy instead formed a shield, that pushed the truck cab back at Patricia.
“You’re going to fast,” Sally cried.
“Wow… why couldn’t I have got that power,” Charlie complained.
“Wicked game of catch, huh,” Patricia held the cab over her head, tossing it back.
Schroeder took a deep breath, releasing his inner tenor, deflecting the cab away. Marcie looks over the readings. Sally gives Patricia a rapid volley of blast, she uses her speed to dodge. Patricia ripped a hood off a car, flinging it, missing her mark, sending it towards Lamar.
“Fuck,” he jumped over it.
“Hey! You’re pretty agile,” Patricia yelled.
“Agility… ,” he started, before a sideview mirror hit him in the head, “that hurt,” he growled.
“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball,” Patricia laughed, launching a door.
“I bet I could hit him,” Sally yelled.
“Fuck,” he dodged one if her beams.
“Dance partner,” Sally laughed, shooting at him.
“At least everybody’s in a good mood,” Lucy sighed, “well not Lamar.”
Lamar caught a door Patricia tossed, throwing it away from him, accidently towards Linus, who stopped it in mid air, sending it flying in some other direction.
“Weird… it seems any time they use their powers, it raises their heart rates and every time the three of you use your powers, brainwave activity goes up,” Marcie explained.
“Okay, you guys might wanna lay off Lamar; he’s getting mad,” Lucy yelled.
“Mad for what, this is fun,” Sally laughed, “we finally get to let loose!”
“Charlie, why don’t you try to use your powers,” Linus asked.
“All I seem to do is bring bad luck.”
“Yeah, let’s see what you can do,” Patricia walked up.
“There was something else, that day… I felt it. When you were trying to get Violet and Patty to leave us alone. I can’t describe it, but it physically hurt like hell,” Lucy said.
“Sounds cool! Let’s see it, Chuck, give it a shot,” Patricia encouraged.
“We all wanna see it, man,” Schroeder said.
“I guess I’ll give it a shot… let’s see,” he closed his eyes.
