PART 3: WHAT KILLS YOU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
--- REMONI (continued) ---
Remoni quickly did the math and realized that her cousin was right. She could think of one or two other theories maybe, but Tayori's was by far the most plausible, especially because the timing fit. She made a whining sort of noise at the thought of leaving behind her stolen treasure (really, she didn't have to words to express how much it frustrated and rankled her to have to leave it behind).
Tayori smiled as she got her stuff together, not bothering with the coat. "Hey, I know. But we'll steal some more, you'll see. It'll be fun." She comforted her.
Remoni made another wining sound but then sighed. "I hate this." She complained as they left in the opposite direction as the oncoming noises were coming from.
Minutes later, they were dropping from the ceiling of a small storage room in the back of one of the stores. If they'd lost the tracker, like Tayori guessed, then their odds of escaping weren't horrible, but Remoni wasn't fooling herself, they were in one very bad situation, the worst ether of them had been in. She peeked out the door, not hearing any commotion from the other side. "Clear. Lets go." Remoni spoke, wishing they could hold hands while they made a break for it (it would be a comfort for her ragged nerves right about then), but knowing they both had to be holding their weapons and free to move with maximum range of motion if they were going to have their best chance of defending themselves if they encountered a team of law-keepers.
They made their way down the hall quickly and silently, soon finding themselves in a clothing store, search lights streaming in from outside and the voices of law-keepers inside the store. They couldn't go back, the hallway dead-ended in a group of offices the other way, they'd checked. "I hate law-keepers, I mean, I really hate them." Remoni spoke under her breath. "Have I mentioned that recently?"
"You might have hinted at it, yeah." Tayori replied with an amused smile. "At this moment, I very definitely share the sentiment though... just so you know."
"Well, there's that at least." Remoni shook her head. Tayori wasn't nearly as anti-authority as she was, Remoni knew. She wasn't very political at all, in fact. Saying that she didn't think it paid, particularly, to think in those terms unless you were actively trying to change things. Otherwise, it was just wasted energy. And, to a degree, Remoni knew her cousin had a point, but, well, she couldn't help feeling the way that she did, that the system was so unfair. It was a big part of why she'd made the choices she had in life, and so, she'd told Tayori, that it did make a difference, to her, if to no one else. And of course, Tayori said that that was fine and all, for her, but that she just didn't have the same strong feelings about it. And Remoni hadn't felt the need to argue the point with her, because she knew that was just how her cousin was, always living in the moment, not really looking too far forward or back very often. It was one of the things she loved most about Tayori, in fact, so she wasn't about to suggest that she change in any way, because, in Remoni's opinion, that would have been a tragedy of monumental proportions, one she in no way wanted to risk happening just because she was angry so much of the time about things (at least when her mind wasn't occupied with a woman or focused on doing something thrilling and illegal). Right now, of course, she wasn't feeling that thrill at all, she was mostly feeling just scared, which, of course, meant she was angry about it. "We can't hide. If the ones who were tracking us follow us here, we're done. We have to try to get past them."
Tayori seemed to be considering that for a moment, and Remoni impatiently waited for her response, but knew telling her to make up her mind faster wouldn't help anything. Besides, Remoni knew, even if they did get past the law-keepers in the clothing store they were in (there was only one patrol with three law-keepers, so they probably could manage it without too much trouble if their luck held out and they could keep surprise on their side), they'd be emerging out onto the arcade promenade, where there were sure to be more law-keepers and it would be much harder, maybe even practically impossible, to get past those. It was a bad choice, but to her, their other two choices, hide or surrender themselves, were even worse. Maybe her resourceful cousin would have another idea? "What if we go after the law-keepers in here? We could steal their gear? I'd like our chances that way a lot more."
Remoni considered that and wondered immediately why she hadn't thought of it herself. It was dangerous and risky, but at least it would mean acting instead of reacting again, putting her life more back within her own control again, and that appealed to her a lot right now. "Have I told you how much I love you in the last five minutes?" Remoni asked.
"No, but it's understandable, considering. So, go for it?" She asked.
"Go for it." Remoni agreed, creeping forward with her cousin, heading stealthily towards the-law keeper patrol that was searching the clothing store. The clothing displays that provided motion, some distracting lights, and cover worked very much to their advantage and they were able to surprise the three law-keepers easily, shooting all three before they could fire back or raise an alarm. "We have to be quick about this." Remoni prompted softly as she urgently got one of the law-keepers undressed. Two of the law-keepers were female, and the third male. Unfortunately, one of the females was considerably too short for either Remoni or her cousin wear her uniform convincingly, so one of them was going to have to wear the male's uniform and hope no one noticed.
"I have a smaller chest, I'll take the male's." Tayori offered. And that was true, though not by all that much.
"Fine." Remoni agreed, privately thinking that Tayori should have the female uniform to give her the best chance of escape, but a disagreement right now wasn't worth waisting time on. They'd talked about this. If anything like what was happening now happened, they'd both agreed that, if it came down to it, and one of them was caught, then the other had to try to get away so she could find a way to rescue the other. Remoni was fervently hoping it wouldn't come to that though, because, even if it meant being caught too, she wasn't at all sure she'd be able to bring herself to leave Tayori's side.
Still, she also knew that, as the one who'd been driving, she could now be charged with murder for the death she'd cause in her landing. Even though it was accidental--since it happened while she was evading arrest, she knew it would be treated as premeditated murder anyway. That crime would carry significantly higher penalties and mean that she would be taken to a higher security prison that her cousin probably would. So, practically speaking, she knew that getting arrested with Tayori wouldn't make sense when you looked at it tactically, but the way she felt about her cousin, thinking in practical terms just... wasn't always possible.
"Kay. Think I'm ready, Re. How're you doing?" Tayori asked.
Remoni finished adjusting her helmet. It fed her into the law-keeper's communication feed as well as gave her additional sensory input beyond a person's natural sensory capabilities. "Ready." Remoni replied, looking worriedly at the third law keeper on the floor. "We have to be careful though, we're supposed to have a third with us."
"Right." Remoni concurred. "Come on, we've got to hide them." She told, dragging one of the law-keeper's by her feet.
Remoni considered that for a half a second and agreed it was probably wise. "Okay." She agreed.
Just then, there was a noticeable noise from the behind them, as law-keepers, they couldn't see how many from where they were, came out into the store from where the two of them had come, having followed their trail apparently.
"Damn it!" Remoni swore under her breath, feeling her frustration and panic rising higher and higher. "Why in Yal's name are they coming after us so damnably hard! We're just thieves, that's all!"
"Shh!" Tayori admonished. "Follow me, kay? We've gotta go, now. If we need it, I've left an explosive in the air car we stole, we can use it as a distraction." She informed her, showing Remoni the remote detonator she had in her free hand.
Tayori, with great effort, managed to get her feelings under tenuous control and followed Tayori's lead, grateful that Tayori, as always, had a back up plan. Not that she was fooling herself into thinking it's chances of working were all that great, but at least it was something.
They were almost to the store's exit, when--"You two!" A female voice from behind them called.
Remoni turned around and shot the law-keeper who'd spoke and the one next to her. Tayori followed her lead and fired as well. "Come on!" Tayori grabbed her hand and pulled her along as they made a break for it into the arcade promenade. They ran down the side of the promenade, trying to stay under cover, shouts and weapons fire at their back. A stun shot hit Tayori in the arm and she stumbled. "Kesta! ...Bless me." Tayori swore, invoking the goddess of death's name for luck, as Remoni tried to keep her cousin on her feet and get them to cover.
"Can you keep going?" Remoni asked urgently, now near total panic.
"Yeah, I can..." Tayori told, gritting her teeth and forcing herself to her feet.
They got to their feet and started moving again, but were quickly dissuaded from that by more gun fire. Remoni got them to cover again.
"Final warning: Surrender!" An amplified male law-keeper's voice sounded.
"The explosive?" Tayori asked if she should try it.
A concussion grenade went off in front of them then though and knocked them both back, hard, destroying their cover. Remoni's ears were ringing as she got up. Law-keeper's were surrounding her. She looked over and saw... Tayori... It was like... time just seemed to stop. She could hardly hear the law-keepers' shouting at her as she crawled over to her cousin and was hit in the back with a stun shot causing her to fall. Something had been sticking out of Tayori's neck, her eyes blank, she... she was dead. That image in her mind was such a shock when it finally registered, it shocked her awake again, like a terrible nightmare would, and she clawed at the face of the woman who was holding her. The woman screamed and let her go. Remoni, still feeling numb partly from the stun shot, but not really registering it, tackled another law-keeper in desperation, terror and panic not letting her think rationally about anything right then, and also giving her a mad sort of strength. She got to Tayori's side and saw it again, her cousin, the love of her life, was dead. She couldn't face it. She just couldn't. She grabbed at Tayori's detonator and set it off. A loud crack of concussive force struck like thunder then, and she ran towards three law-keeper land cycles she saw in the distance. She had the access key from the law-keeper's uniform she was wearing and she set two of them off like missiles into the law-keeper personnel blockading the entrance area of the arcade and got on the third, charging it out the doors as the law-keepers bolted to the side to avoid the first two cycles that had come through. She was past the perimeter the law-keepers had set up.
What followed was mostly a blur to her, but somehow, some time later she woke up, her head pounding, and her right leg hurting. She didn't recognize wherever it was she found herself, didn't know when she'd hurt her leg, but, looking around, she saw it was probably just some nondescript room somewhere she'd found to hide in. She sat up and cradled her head in her hands and started to cry, to weep really. She couldn't stop herself, she felt like something inside of her had just... broken.
She stayed there for she didn't know how long (more than a day at least, though it felt longer), and her belly hurt from crying so much. She felt miserable, the most miserable she could imagine being. And it wasn't her body, as malnourished and thirsty as she was becoming, it was something inside of her that just wouldn't stop hurting. Despite that though, despite that she thought she probably fully deserved the pain she was feeling for not being able to keep her cousin alive, for not being able to protect her, she realized that she also didn't want to die. And she would die if she kept on like this. She could already feel her body starting shut down. So, she grit her teeth, squeezed her hands into fists and forced herself to get up. It hurt to walk. Her head hurt, her stomach hurt, and it was hard not to think just how thirsty she was. She went to her pack, but there wasn't much useful there. She had the access key to the land bike she'd stolen. Had she parked it somewhere nearby? No, she realized, she'd ditched it, hadn't she, and stolen an air-car. Then ditched that too, changed into her regular clothes that she'd put back into her pack in the clothing store when... when she and Tayori had taken the law-keeper uniforms.
She'd... she'd kept the access key incase it would come in handy later, because it didn't only access law-keeper vehicles, it could also override most civilian locking mechanisms. Keys like that were illegal for non law-keepers to possess and were very tightly regulated so that it was rare and very expensive to be able to buy one from black market sources. Not that there weren't more than a few similar devices out there made by independent sources, mind you. She had one, but not with her, so she was glad to have the upgrade.
She went to look outside through the window. She recognized where she was right away. It was a residential building. She and Tayori had lived here for almost a year, that's how she'd known where this place was and that it would be safe. That known, her priorities now were water and food. She just focused on that and deliberately shut everything else out. She left her hiding place and went to one of the apartments. She used her law-keeper access key to get in. There ware two men living there, they had a son. She shot the adults, adjusted her gun to a gentler setting, and shot the child. It would leave her a few hours until any of them woke up from the stun shots. Her own experience earlier that day not withstanding, stun shots were usually very reliable.
She went immediately to get some water. She drank slowly, sitting on the floor in the kitchen and trying to get her heart to stop racing and her mind to calm. She only had limited success, but after sitting there drinking water for twenty minutes or so, she began to get her strength back. She got up on her feet again after that and got something to eat, sitting down on a chair this time, looking out at the city through the window.
She tried not to, but the image of Tayori laying there, dead, wouldn't leave her alone. What was she going to do next, she wondered? Bitterly, she found herself wanting revenge. She cradled her head her her hands after a little while thinking about that. A part of her thought that her life seemed a lot more pointless now, with Tayori... gone. Another part of her just... simply couldn't believe it was true. And, non-sensible as it was, it still -felt- to her like Tayori was alive, like... like she just had to go home, and she'd be there. Or, that she'd find her again, if she just looked for her. She knew, rationally, that nether of those things were true, but she felt them anyway. "I'm not going to let this beat me. I'm not. I'm just not." She told herself softly, pushing her more obsessive or irrational thoughts away.
She got her pack and did a quick inventory. She had some money, her weapons, a few tools, and she still had most of the law-keeper's uniform and kit.
Right now, she knew, she had to take care of herself. Find a safe place to live. She and Tayori had a safe house in another part of the city. It had some basics in it, and it would be a good place to hide out. The law-keepers wouldn't be able to find her there, she was almost completely sure of it. But still, it wasn't really a home, just a place to lay low if they needed. She sighed, feeling tired. She fought the feeling though, gathered up her things, and left, making sure to lock the door again as she did.
