Anthony Ivo adjusted his oxygen tank as he stumbled down the halls of the laboratory that had been his home for decades. His mind, the mind that had once rivaled the likes of Luthor and Sivana, swam with bittersweet memories as he remembered the milestones that the laboratory had seen.
A jagged crack along an anterior wall. The memory of one of his third-generation androids thrashing about in a wild panic as it struggled to come to terms with the terrifying reality of human emotion.
A hole the size of a cannon ball in the testing chamber. Experimenting with a missile system stolen from Cyborg during a bruising battle with the Titans.
And an empty bag of chemotherapy medication, laid out in front of him. A memory from 2 months ago, when his condition had worsened, leaving him unable to do much of anything. Except scheme. Confined to his bed except for the rare occasions when he could muster enough strength to lurch toward his lab and inspect Project Regenesis himself instead of through a computer, Ivo had nothing but dwindling time. And he used it well.
Ivo was dying. About a year and three months ago, he had made the mistake of fighting Superman on his own rather than deploying his trusty androids to do the job. Armed with a kryptonite-powered suit, he had fought the Kryptonian and brought him to his knees, until the Man of Steel gathered his ebbing strength to release a blast of heat-vision that had damaged the suit's power cells and caused it to leak focused K-radiation inwards, onto Ivo's body. As he screamed in agony, a weakened Superman desperately tried to pull him free of the armor. By the time Kal-El succeeded, however, Ivo had been exposed to enough K-radiation to kill 10 Kryptonians.
A month later at a Secret Society medical facility, Ivo was diagnosed with no less than five different forms of advanced cancer. His doctor made it very clear that there was no point getting his hopes up. Revolutionary medical aids Ivo had kept locked away in his lab gave him some extra time, but not much. The clock was running out.
He had always hated the costumed freaks that polluted the skies and rooftops of every major city on the planet, and now they had killed him. Even his fellow villains had dismissed him as a freak, an outcast, and he had nonetheless supplied them with arms, androids and ammunition out of loyalty to the cause. And what had it got him? Nothing. In his hour of need, they had all deserted him. And though Superman had given a statement to the Metropolis police expressing his regret and claiming the tragedy was an accident, Ivo knew every hero on the planet would breath a sigh of relief knowing he would be gone soon. How could they not? He was Ivo. He had created the mechanical monstrosity that haunted their nightmares.......Amazo.
Amazo.........Ivo quickened his pace as the doors to his lab slid open. The power-copying android had always been Ivo's most famous creation, and now, it would be the instrument of his last laugh, kickstarting a horrific scheme that would change the world. For his final Amazo, Ivo had abandoned the policy of copying the powers of Earth's mightiest heroes for the android's powerset. If this were to be his final plan, it would need to be flawless. And so Amazo Model 52 was created, possessing the powers of the universe's mightiest villains!
The strength of Doomsday. The speed of the Reverse-Flash. The telepathic powers of Despero. The shape-shifting powers of Malefic. Zod's heat vision. Brainiac's analytical mind. And Lobo's legendary healing factor.
But there was one final ingredient that remained. Ivo reached into his coat, and a trembling hand pulled out a canister filled with billions upon billions of nanites. It was these nanites that formed the core of Ivo's plan. Each of them contained a specially designed piece of his own DNA, capable of replicating within a host to create a hybrid being made of Ivo's DNA as well as the host's. And it was Amazo's job to ensure, by whatever means necessary, that the nanites were successfully introduced into the host bodies.
Female host bodies.
Technically any female would do, but the heroines and villainesses of the world were survivors, possessing a resolve that allowed them to get back up every time they were knocked down. This would maximize the possibility of his hybrid Ivo's coming to term. And his heart quickened as he imagined how Amazo would break that fabled resolve and teach them why they should have shown Ivo more respect. They would bear a new generation of Ivo's, deadlier than ever, and the world would be helpless before his legacy.
He felt a burning sensation within his chest all of a sudden. The last few months had taught him that was never a good sign. He hastily made his final additions to the android's programming. Amazo Model 52 was programmed with the names and locations of every female hero and villain on the planet. From that database, it would identity 10 suitable hosts according to what useful attributes they could contribute to the hybrid Ivo they would bear. It would not shy away from violence, if necessary. It would not stop until the nanites were successfully introduced. And it would annihilate anyone who tried to stop it.
With one final press of a button, Ivo lurched back and collapsed onto the floor. He feebly reached for his oxygen tank, but he knew it was too late. His eyes shut as his cold, black heart slowed to a halt. One of the greatest minds in human history was no more.
Moments later, Amazo Model 52 opened his crimson eyes and gazed upon the form of his fallen creator. This event could only mean one thing: Project Regenesis was open. Scanning the globe, he settled on the city of Gotham on the Eastern Seabord. Identifying his target, he departed the lab.
