With one swift move, the blade sliced clean through the neck, and with a thud the head rolled off and bounced to the floor. The only other sound in the room was the banging on the large metal door, the only entrance and exit. The sound echoed off the concrete walls and the celling shook and dropped debris every time a bomb exploded. The battle outside seem distant to the silence in the room, it was peaceful and Sophia felt like she good breathe easier for the first time in her life.
The door crashed open like someone bent the medal off the hinges and it slammed into the wall at the far end of the room. Sophia just slightly stepped to the left to miss it. Three men came charging into the room, what they saw did not make them lower their weapons. A small girl with long white blonde curly hair that reached well past her waist, she was wearing a simple white Ki, and no shoes. What gave the guys a pause was the fact that her front was bathed with blood and there was a dead headless guy in the room. He was the man they were here for, Akira Hurrada former lead assassin in the League of Shadows, and he was defeated by a child. Seeing the wariness in their eyes, Sophia dropped the sword. She didn’t need it anymore. Sophia hopped over her masters body and stepped up the strange man where a red blanket. She looked up into his blue eyes and smiled. “You’re late, and I’m ready to leave.” Her small soft demand made the blue eyed man raise an eyebrow. “What happed here?” One of the other men asked examining Hurrada’s body, noticing how clean the cut was, it takes a lot of force to cut off a head. He looked at the girl in front of him; she couldn’t be more the seventy pounds. How? he asked himself. “My master, the man you know as Akira Hurrada, stole me from an orphanage at the age of three and trained me to kill.” Looking over her shoulder at the man who was kneeling next to master she added, “He came here to end my life…how ironic is it that I ended his?” With that she tried to leave but the man with the red blanket stopped her with his hands gently on her shoulders. Sophia fought the urge to hit his hands away; he was obviously just trying to help. The man knelt down to her level so she didn’t have to look up. “What is your name?” “Sophia, I don’t remember my last name.” “How old are you?” He asked gently, this man was accustomed to talking with children. He had an S on his chest; Sophia wondered what it was for. The man behind her wore all green and the one next to the S man was in all red with a yellow dash. Reaching out to touch the S Sophia asked. “Why do you wear this? It’s not armor? You all are dressed very strange, and I am twelve.” Her fingers traced the She raised her eyes when everyone went quiet. He looked sad. “Do you know who we are?” The other two men came to stand on either side of him. Sophia looked into each one their faces trying to remember if she had ever seen them before. “No, Why?” Sophia asked blankly *************************************************************************************“What are we going to do with her? We can’t just drop her off somewhere and say 'Oh hey...we rescued this girl who was trained as an assassin and might kill you in your sleep, but good luck raising her'.” Green Lantern said sarcastically pacing back and for. The girl in question was sitting on a rock fifty feet away drinking from a canteen. They were just outside the compound and she just wanted to sit there and watch it burn.
“Martin is checking her DNA for any living relatives but we really don’t have any protocols for this.” Superman said running his hand through his hair. He felt sorry for the kid, she didn’t sign up for this like the other assassins, and she has had obviously no experience with the outside world, she had no idea who they were. “We should have her evaluated and then just place her in a home, the girl has crazy green eyes” he said rubbing his arms from the goose bumps. “I have a grandmother.” All three guys jumped, green lantern put up a shield, Flash was already twenty feet away and Superman was the only one to hold his ground. He was amazed he didn’t even hear her, how was that possible. Sophia’s eyes became wider as she examined green lanterns shield. “How are you doing that?” She asked calmly caressing the green shield. Her smile was sly with in two seconds she pulled a small knife from out of her Ki and scratches the shield and then placed it back. Green lanterns eyes widen he barely saw her do it, she was that fast. “Interesting” was all she said and then turned to Superman. “He has a special ring, how do you know that you have a grandmother?” Superman asked calmly as if nothing had happened. Flash slowly walked back over and Green Lantern lowered his shield. Both men kept an eye on her. “My master mentioned it in passing; it was how they would integrate me into the city without causing suspicion.” Sophia said casually turning back to the burning compound her blonde hair catching the wind. Her actions and stance made her seem more mature then a twelve year old. “Which city?” Green Lantern asked “Gotham, I was to attend school and earn a scholar ship to Gotham Grove…a private school.” Sophia said. “Why Gotham?” the Flash asked, this made no since. “So that I could kill the man people know as the Batman” Sophia said looking down at her bloody Ki. Looking back up at the men she added. “I require new clothes; these might upset my grandmother if she sees the blood. I hear blood upsets people who aren’t’ used to seeing it.” “Uhm…how are you going to kill him?” Superman asked a little worried for his bat friend. This girl was quite capable he feared. “I was to get kidnaped along with several other students, get close to him and then make my strike. The master said I was innocent enough to be overlooked.” She looked up as innocently at Superman as she could, he could even feel the need to protect her. “But now that is no longer the case, I just want to live a normal life.” She sighed. “Holy crap.” Flash said grinning, this girl was a trip, but the real question was could she be trusted to not kill people. At that moment Martin landed next to them he was carrying a change of clothes and bag. He handed both to the girl, she smile and thanked him and then proceeded to strip. All four grown men turned around to watch what was left of the compound burn. “In the bag you will find a birth certificate and passport. We have already called your grandmother Marian Grace and let her know you will be coming to live with her. For the last nine years she has been looking for you, Sophia.” Martin informed the group. “That is good to hear, so I will not be an unwanted houseguest.” Sophia pulled up a pair of jeans and fumbled with the zipper and the button. These where things tricky, the shoes were pink with a star on the side and they were the softest things Sophia had ever had on her feet. “Amazing. I’d forgotten what shoes felt like.” All the men turned back to look at her, right now she looked like any twelve year old; jeans, t-shirt with s on the chest. Her hair, still wild and long, blew in the wind and she still had a slight smudge of blood on her face. “Are you ready to go?” Superman asked reaching for Sophia’s hand. “Almost.” Sophia answered turning towards the burning compound. She dropped her bag and went into a deep bow on her knees placing her forehead on the dusty ground. Then sitting back up, she pulled a knife out of her shirt and pulled her hair back into one big pony tail and then cleanly cut through it. She released the hair in the next big gust of wind saying “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” She turned back to Superman ready to go; he put a comforting hand on her short blonde hair. She smiled up at him. This is a nice guy. “You’re going to have to leave your knives here.” He smiled down at her.“How is it you can fly?” Sophia asked trying to fix her now crazy windblown hair; she wished he had warned her. They were now in front of a small house that was white with yellow trim. She took in the neighborhood: it was full of trees and children playing in the streets. Riding bikes, parents yelling from the porch, a man was fixing his car in the drive. It was chaos. “I’m from another planet. This is your home now Sophia Grace. I need you to look at me.” He gently took her chin and made her look back at him. “It would be best not to tell anyone about your time with master and if someone is going to hit you and you know it won’t hurt, take the hit. I know it’s strange but if people think your week they won’t mess with you. Listen to your grandmother she is your master now. And if you met Batman please don’t kill him he is a friend of mine.” He walked slowly with her up the sidewalk a couple of the kids in the street stopped to stare. “Can I not practice anymore; I like tumbling can I still do that?” Sophia’s favorite part about the day was when she could practice her tumbling, flying through the air landing gracefully was freeing. The master would punish her by taking it away, but now she could do it whenever she wanted too. “Yes that would be okay but no killing what’s so ever. Promise me.” Superman paused causing Sophia to look back at him. “Promise?” she asked confused by the word. “Swear an oath.” Superman reiterated. He knew this was the right decision, this girl needed her family, and she wanted to be normal. Superman just couldn’t bear the thought of taking a child to the DEO. He heard rumors about that place and he just wasn’t willing to trust it yet. “Stop” she came to stand before him. She bowed, staring eye to eye at the top of his bright red boots. Sophia pulled another knife from under her pink superman shirt. She placed it before is feet. “I am your blade, and this blade will not take a life till you command it.” Supermen watched her get back up and hide the knife once more. What am I going to do with my very own ninja? By the time he gathered his thoughts together they were standing at the front door. Sophia slowed her hart and held her breath as Superman knocked on the door. Why was this so nerve racking. The door open and an older woman with small rimmed glasses opened the door, her eyes widen as she saw Superman first but when he moved to the side and reveal Sophia the woman’s eyes began to tear up. She fell to her knees and opened her arms embracing Sophia. Sophia looked up a Superman. “Why is she crying?” Sophia didn’t understand. “I’m crying because I thought I would never see you again. Oh my sweet girl let me hold you.” Miriam Grace cried. Her granddaughter was here finally after all these years. They told her to give up - they told her she was gone, but Miriam new that somewhere her granddaughter was waiting for her. “Okay but I might stink”.
At the end of the day, superman gave Miriam a number to reach the DEO if Sophia became more then she could handle. Miriam new this wasn’t going to be easy, they had taken Sophia when she was three. She was trained to be the perfect killer, but when Miriam looked at that child’s face all she saw was the daughter she lost years ago, the hair and the eyes where off, but the face was that of her daughter. This was a new beginning and now it was time to stop crying and live again.
Three weeks later.
“So your grandmother tells me you are a very gifted a preciouses child. Now that you have taken these placement tests we can conclude that your I.Q. is extremely high but you wish to remain with your peer group? Why is that Sophia?” Doctor Eric Walter asked the young cherub sitting in front of him. This girl finished the test in almost record time. The child who broke the record was one experiment short of becoming a super villain. Thinking about that kid made Eric wince.
“I want a school experience and the chance to make friends.” Sophia informed him sitting straight and keeping eye contact. “I have been ‘sheltered’ all my life; I feel that going here will turn me into a well-rounded adult.” Sophia had actually read about all this in a parent magazine at the book store. It made since, so she asked Nan if she could go to school. Her grandmother was shocked but happy that Sophia wanted to meet other people. “That was a very good answer young lady; Gotham Groves would be pleased to welcome you to their ranks. With your high test scores and low income you can apply for the Wayne Scholarship. All you would have to do is write Bruce Wayne a letter stating why learning is important to you.” Eric walked around his big oak desk and shook Sophia’s hand. “In the mean time you will go here on honor system, meaning we will provide books and a uniform until your scholarships come through. Welcome to Gotham Groves miss Sophia Grace.” Sophia was so excited, she had this pressure in her chest that just need to release. During the tour of the school she came across the gym now she was on her way back there. The gym as huge and had a skylight the size of an Olympic pool. They had gymnastic equipment up for a tournament this weekend. Sophia was going to test it out. At the edge of the blue mat Sophia slipped of her nice black shoes and socks. Then within a second she was off running for the parallels, no need for a spring board she flew at them. Spinning and doing several flips around the bar she let go, something any normal gymnast would not do in mid spin, flying straight up towards the ceiling. Sophia caught one of the ceiling beams and settled into a crouch. Laughing at how high she was she sat and looked down it had to be at least 65 feet to the floor. Kicking her legs she looked out the skylight. This is exactly where she wanted to be. The door slamming open roused Sophia from her daydreaming. Rolling onto her stomach Sophia peered down at the boy who was making all the noise. He threw off his backpack a walked over to the tumbling matt and laid down directly in the middle looking up he closed his eyes. His whole body was tense and he was trying to control his breathing. He was wearing the school uniform but it was too big for him. Sophia smiled this was her chance to meet another student. Going back to a crouch Sophia jumped down towards the bars, grabbing the high bar she slowed her momentum and landed softly. She was standing right next to his head and he still did not open his eyes. Frowning Sophia poked him with her toe. It was instant faster than Sophia could jump back. Now she was on her back staring up at cold blue eyes. Sophia fought against every instinct to fight back even though this boy could probably handle himself. He had her pined with a hand firmly on her neck. She tried to put the knife she had against his stomach back under her shirt but he grabbed her wrist. He looked down at the knife and back at her green eyes with annoyance. “Hello.” Sophia said dropping the knife on the mat and completely going limp. Be passive... “Who are you? Who do you work for?” The boy asked with a snarled like an angry puppy. Which made Sophia just want to pet his short black hair and make him happy. “My name is Sophia Grace and you are?” Sophia asked the boy with a big smile on her face. The boy leaned in and applied more pressure on her neck, but not enough to make Sophia worry… yet. “Don’t you know the name of the person you’re supposed to kill?” “I’m not here to kill you.” Sophia reassured him “Then why do you have a knife?” the boy asked laughing like he caught her in a lie. “I always have a knife, I come from a broken home.” Sophia smiled, it was partially true. At that moment the door opened and a tall man no more than late twenties came into the gym. Sophia and the boy both looked to the door. The man immediately ran over and pulled the boy of Sophia and threw him across the mat. “What is the matter with you Damian? First you argue with a teacher and then you attack a student. I knew you weren’t ready for this.” While he yelled at the boy Sophia hid the knife back under her shirt and got up. Damian didn’t miss a thing his eyes narrowed. “She attacked me.” Damian yelled pointing a finger back at the girl. The man took one look at her and crossed his arms staring down the boy, he obviously didn’t believe Damian. Sophia new exactly how to diffuse; this situation she had been watching a lot of TV lately. “I was just going to kiss him.” Sophia said softly looking up at the man with tears in her eyes. The man’s eyes widened and he look like he was about to laugh. “Lies!” Damian yelled charging at Sophia. Sophia was surprised to see a red flush on his checks. Maybe next time I should kiss him. When the man caught Damian he was now openly laughing. The man reached down and picked up Damian’s bag. “Sorry little girl it seems he is not interested, give it a few years.” And with that the man carried Damian out. “I swear to god Grayson if you don’t put me down...” and with that they were gone, Sophia fell back onto the mat laughing. School was going to be fun. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
