Everyone in Riverdale knows about the famous three some in history ( been going on for 70 years) Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. They all live in a small town, Riverdale, USA
Betty is the beta girlfriend of the freckle faced , red haired teen named Archibald Andrews. . You know, the girl who is the spare. She is available when alpha girlfriend, Veronica Lodge is not. Veronica sometimes dated Reggie Mantle, Jason Blossom, or any good looking guy around.
Others who are involved with this very strange group is Reggie Mantle, Jughead (Forsythe) Jones,(Jughead is Archie's best friend),  Midge Klump Moose (Marmaduke) Mason, Ethel Muggs, Nancy Woods and Chuck Clayton. Otherwise all of Riverdale High.
What may or may not be known is it was actually a foursome. Add Reggie Mantle to this group. They have all double dated since forever.
Betty Cooper is such a nice girl. Pretty, smart and caring. What does she see in Archie? thought Reggie, mused Jughead, and with disgusted thoughts Mr. and Mrs. Cooper. Jughead felt like he and Betty were like siblings. It was hard to remain BFF with Archie when he saw the pain in Betty's eyes, after one of Archie's thoughtless antics.
Jughead would just shake his head, say something to make her laugh, and Betty  would forget Archie for a little while. He even was glad when she went out with others, because he would see Archie get angry and be nice to Bets for a while, until the next big disappointment.
Reggie had a secret. Reggie always liked Betty, and made it his business to get a "rise" out of her. She was lovely when she was angry. He also knew that when Betty was busy being angry at him, it took her mind off of Meathead.
Reggie Mantle was the town bad boy. He reveled in that title. He and Archie were rivals since childhood. Reggie made sure he excelled at everything, just to show Archie up. Archie still got the girls. Reggie just did not understand girls. Why did Betty and Veronica fight over that red headed fool?
Sometimes Reggie would cook up little pranks to get the other Betty angry at Archie, or just to get Archie mad.  Like air being let out of Archie’s tires, making his jalopy unusable. Archie innocently having a dribble glass to drip juice on Ronnie’s designer blouse.
This made Ronnie mad at Archie and Ronnie would then call Reggie, to take her out.
Archie would of course call Betty, and take her out on a cheap date.
Reggie had pretended he wanted to make Ronnie jealous too. He really didn't want Ronnie, but everyone thought he did. Betty was so happy when she was out with Archie. She was beautiful when she was happy. Or mad at Archie
Hey, Ronnie was gorgeous, so it wasn’t hard to be with her, or be seen with her. It was great to be seen out with her. The necking was great too. They had done sucked each other off after most of their dates this year.
But something was missing in it for  Reggie.
Oh and there was  Midge too. Reggie felt it showed his strength and endurance to take a beating from Moose, pretty much every day.
It made Midge look good to everyone .
Or Cheryl Blossom. Cheryl definitely has the hots for Reggie. She always managed to flash him a good look at her boobs. They had sex quite a few times actually.
Or Greta, or Mary. Any good looking girl in Riverdale was fair game for the “Mantle”.
Reggie would flirt with so many girls shamelessly.
He did have a reputation as a bad boy to keep up with and live up to.
It was expected of him.
Right? He was Mantle the Magnificent after all. At lease he thought so.
And Betty was in love with Archie.
One day, the whole gang was at Pop's after school
Reggie was sitting with Betty, watching her looking at Veronica and Archie, necking and cuddled in another booth. Her face had such a stricken look, it made Reggie really pissed.
“Betty, why do you keep running after Archie? He obviously wants Veronica”.
‘Why can't you see me? I am the Great Mantle, right? Yeah right. Huh! She never looks at me except as being a sub for carrot top’  Reggie actually snorted out loud at this thought
“Reggie, mind your own business! I am not after Archie. Archie just has 2 girlfriends. We are an item and you know it. What's it to you?”
Betty hated when anyone, especially Reggie talked about the threesome.
“Hey Bets, I have an idea. I’ve always looked at you as a good friend. Let's make meathead , uh Archie jealous. Let's pretend we are going steady to make him choose between you and Ronnie. What do you say? Then I can get Ronnie and you can have Archie all to yourself”
Betty was thinking, 'Hummm' .
"Maybe. I don't want any tricks from you Mantle. Do I have to kiss you?”
They have never kissed more than a few pecks on the cheek or lips.
“Not unless you want to. We have to make it look good though, you know hold hands, cuddle, hug, like we are a couple. No girl can be with me and not want to touch me." Reggie said to her, smirking as usual." So, do we have a deal?"
“OK. I will try it. It's a deal. Why do you want to help me, by the way?” She looked at Reggie with suspicion.
“ I like you Betty (if you only knew) I know you want Archie and I want Ronnie.”
Which he did, but only as a friend.
“Good enough. Thanks Reggie. I didn't know you cared”
“ Sure do (DO I!!!). I want my friends to be happy." Reggie  said this very sarcastically, which made Betty scowl at him.
Reggie has had a secret crush on Betty. Since she only went out with him as a back up, he played the field, and got great pleasure out of teasing her and playing little pranks on her. Betty was an easy target. She hated when Reggie teased her, pulled her pigtails or hit her with snow balls.
Sometimes Reggie almost, absolutely hated Archie.
‘What do the chicks see in this guy? They seem to like his clumsiness. Plus he is always broke. And lame!’ Reggie just shook his head, really puzzled about this.
Betty and Reggie shook hands on the Deal.
They would act as they were a couple to get the people they wanted.
Neither commented on the electricity they felt at this handshake.
