It was winter in Gotham, the air was cold and crisp. The heavily falling snow blanketed the standard filth and grime of the city making Gotham momentarily beautiful.
Pamela hated it- the weather caused her to lose contact with her beloved plants as they either went dormant or subcomb to the frost and died. Scowling, she glared out her living room window willing the cold and snow to go away, but her anger had little effect on the weather. ‘At least my plants inside are safe,’ she tried to console herself as the snow continued to fall.
Sighing, she pulled herself away from the window, settled onto the living room sofa and flipped on the television. The news came on warning residents to stay in their homes as ice and snow has caused the road to become treacherous. “Like anyone would be stupid enough to go out in this,” Pamela muttered to herself.
At that moment there was loud knock on the door. ‘Who on earth…?’ Pamela wondered, rising up from the sofa. She peered through the front door peep hole. A trembling harlequin stood on her doorstep, the bells on Harley’s cap jingling as she shivered half-frozen in her villainess costume. Pamela yanked open the door and pulled the smaller woman inside, practically throwing her at the couch, and slammed the door behind her.
Harley tried to apologize for showing up out of blue and explain what happened but Pamela ignored her, stomping into the kitchen to fix some hot tea for Harley to drink. She'd heard Harley's apologies before; they never change and it was more than obviously what happened: that bastard clown had thrown Harley out...again.
‘Jesus,’ Pamela thought, ‘he threw Harlequin out in a blizzard. It's amazing she didn't freeze to death.’
Pamela wanted to scream at Harley to leave the Joker, she wanted to grab her and take her far away before that psycho wound up killing her, Pamela wanted to chop up that lunatic and use him to fertilize her garden.
But Pamela had yelled, begged, and pleaded with Harley before to leave her dangerous lover and the simple fact was Harley wouldn't -not for long anyways.
Pamela had tried to take and keep Harley away from the Joker but Harley always found a way back to him.
And, as satisfying as cutting the fool up and feeding him to her plants would be, Pamela knew in her heart that the Joker’s death would only lead to Harley's, as the blonde would probably slit her wrists as opposed to being apart from her Mister J.
In the end, Pamela knew she was helpless to do anything more than get the hot tea in Harley, get her in a warm shower, treat any new scrapes or bruises on Harley's delicate frame, and tuck her troublesome friend into a warm bed, which is what she did.
Only once Pamela heard the soft snoring sound which confirmed Harley was asleep did she allow herself the luxury of tears. She dreamed of growing plants in dark rain forest where she would never have to face winter again. She longed for the freedom of unspoiled wilderness, leaving the rotting city of Gotham to the bat…but she couldn't leave Harley, not for long anyway.
Pamela couldn't bear to lose those blue eyes and beautiful laugh she loved so much, not even for her plants.
“I'd grow us a Paradise to rival any Eden, Harley.,” Pamela sighed softly, watching over her friend as she slept. “But you won't you let him go.” She smiled mirthlessly. “And since I can't seem to let you go, I guess I'll just have to wait until Gotham does us in before I get my Paradise.”
