Youthful Days
A young girl, perhaps 15 or 16 years of age. She has an average height of 5’2’’. Her weight is 135 pounds. She has a sporty build, strong, long legs and somewhat toned arms. Her skin tone was pale. Short, silky, fiery red hair framed her face, bangs combed to the side. And sharp, green eyes finished off her appearance. This girl’s name is Elisabetta. And this is her story. A story of tragedy, familial bonds, and of course love.
My name, as you may already know is Elisabetta. I was named after Elisabetta Sirani, an Italian painter who lived during the 1630s. She was also a musician and a poet. But, I am hardly called that, friends usually call me Sassy, due to my personality.
I was walking through the sewers, my clunky, black boots crushing anything underneath them. I was wearing a deep red zip up, hooded jacket with a plain black spaghetti strap shirt, safety pins lined the hem. And I had on a pair of black leggings under my black and red checkered skirt.
I was walking home from the pizzeria that had just opened on Bloomberg Ave. I made sure to get three, which were now in my black messenger bag. ’It’s a lovely night out.’ I thought to myself. I cursed at the fact that I couldn’t take my time, had to get home.
I soon came to the secret opening to my home. “Let’s see, which one was it? Third one to the right I believe.” I thought out loud, pulling on the lever and smiling as the door opened, revealing the Lair.
“Hey dudes! Sassy’s back!!!” a hyper and childish voice called out excitedly. I was soon tackled by the guy I saw as my little brother, Michelangelo.
“Heh, hey there Mikey.” I laughed, trying to push the excited turtle off me. I heard him inhale deeply.
“Where is it?” he asked, narrowing his blue eyes at me, attempting to appear menacing.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, faking ignorance.
Mikey scrunched his face in slight, albeit, childish anger. “You know exactly what I’m talking about! Where‘s the pizza?!” he groaned impatiently. I think I heard his stomach growl.
“I have no pizza, Mikey. I just went for a walk.” I told him, smiling innocently. Leo, Raph and Donnie had come to see what Mikey’s racket was about.
“I know you’re lying! I can smell em!!!” he cried hysterically, on the verge of tears. “I’m starvin here Sassy!” Mikey whined, finally using the one thing I couldn’t resist in a million and one lifetimes. His sad puppy eyes.
“Aww. Alright, here ya go, Mikey.” I sighed, giving into the puppy eyes. I pulled the three pizza boxes out of my bag and gave up ownership to my younger brother.
“Sweet!!” he cheered, running to the kitchen/dining room and set the boxes on the table. “Oohh! Hawaiian, Meat Lover’s Delight and BBQ Chicken! Great choices Sassy!” He complimented, flashing his sis a thumbs up.
“Nice to see you approve Mikey.” I giggled, joining him and grabbing a few slices of BBQ Chicken pizza, my personal fave.
I was sitting between Mikey and Raphael. We all recently had our first real fight. Of course it was a success. But, unfortunately for Raph, he lost a Sai, those things were his pride and joy. He flicked a slice of pepperoni off one of his pizza slices, anger permanently etched into his dark chocolate eyes. He remained this way through all of dinner. Mikey somehow started a pizza fight. He was probably trying to rile up Raph to get him to feel somewhat better.
Immediately after dinner, Raphael stormed to into his room, locking the door as soon as it closed. Thankfully, we use paper plates so there’s hardly ever any dish build up.
I quickly finished washing the cups and made my way to Raph’s room. I hated seeing him like this, unfortunately he’s in such a mood a good deal of the time.
Right as I was reaching the doorknob, his door burst open, a trench coat clad Raph speeding past me. Thankfully, I am the faster out of the five of us, so I caught up to him easily. “Yo Raph, where’s the fire?” I asked lightheartedly, trying to get a smile to pop up from the turtle.
“Out to a movie, you got a problem wit dat?” he questioned, sounding extremely annoyed. He grabbed his hat and placed it on his head.
“If its no trouble, would you mind if I tagged along? I understand if you’d rather be alone-”
“Be my guest.” he grunted, leaning against the wall.
“Thanks Raph! Let me get my boots on!” I cheered, dashing to my room and quickly putting on my signature boots. I was by Raph’s side in no time. “Ok, let’s go!” I smiled, getting my ‘brother’s’ attention.
Raph opened the door, allowing me to go out first. Splinter raised us to be respectful, and his boys to be courteous. “Just telling ya, I’m seein this horror movie. If ya run out, yer on yer own.” He said, hands in the pockets of his trench coat.
“Are you sure you’re talkin about me? How long have you known me man?” I asked, feeling insulted.
“Eleven years now, right?” he asked, glancing over at me to see if he was correct.
“Yup! Good guess Raph. So, you should know, I love horror flicks.” I reminded the hot-head, hands behind my head. ‘I wonder what usually’s goin on in that head of his. Probably safer not knowing.’ I thought to myself. I was growing bored with just walking…”Hey Raph…” I called out playfully.
It looked like he was pondering something but I snapped him out of his thoughts. “Yeah? What?” he asked, seeming annoyed.
“Wanna race? Just like we used to do?” I asked, feeling a sense of accomplishment as a smirk grew on his face.
“Yer on, the loser has ta pay for the movie.” He said, setting the stakes of our game.
I grinned and accepted his challenge. We got into place, making sure neither of us was remotely ahead so we couldn’t say it was unfair. We’ve done this numerous times before.
“On your mark…get set…GO!!!” I cried energetically, Raph and myself taking off immediately afterward.
Raph and I were neck and neck when something occurred to me. “Hey Raph!! Where’re we gonna end this race?” I asked, panting softly.
“I dunno! How bout da park?” he suggested, casting a confused look at me.
“Sounds good to me!” I smiled, picking up my pace, pulling ahead of a stunned Raph. ’This is in the bag.’ I thought confidently. My smug outlook vanished when Raph gained the lead!
“That all you got?” he called out playfully.
“Not even close, lizard lips!” I always made sure not to call him anything close to hothead, very sensitive subject. I took my speed up a notch. I was the only one who ever saw the playful side of Raphael. It has almost always been that way.
Raphael usually despised Leonardo and took a good deal of his anger on Michelangelo. He didn’t really pick on me nor Donatello. Raph always seemed to have an unbelievable amount of anger built up. I’ve always tried to have him open up to me at least. Mikey would be pretty roughed up at times.
Michelangelo’s always been a tough kid though. I give him credit there. When I compare Raph to how he use to be, he’s calmed down a tad. Slow and steady is better then no progress at all.
I have gotten injured from sparring with Raphael a few times I will admit. Only on three occasions, two in which my clumsiness was the big blame.
One was when I was about 8. Raph wanted to do some training and came to me. We had been practicing kicks when I overshot one and fell into the weapon rack. Thankfully the only part of me that got injured was a slash on my left hand from a shuriken. Raph acted quickly and got Master Splinter and Donatello, my wound was taken care of in record time.
The second was once again a complete klutz on my part. Same scenario, Raph wanted to train but not with Leo. This was when I was about 11 or so. We had just been given real versions of the weapons we have been practicing with for countless years. I was decently proficient with my weapon of choice, the Iron Steel Whip Chain. I am also skilled with the Kyoketsu Shoge, a bladed chain weapon. I somehow got tangled by my Whip, a nasty slash now scarred my left leg, a few inches below my knee. It didn’t bleed too much thankfully.
The third one, was thanks to Raph. Once again, training time. It was late at night, we were all 14 now. So this is very recent. Everyone else was asleep besides Raphael and I. I should’ve said no, he was pretty steamed from an argument he had with Leo. But, I’ve never been able to say no to Raphael. He’s always been there for me, I should do the same, as his sister and as his friend.
I can vividly remember the anger burning in his eyes. Yet still, I pushed on, I always feared his strength. Raphael was the strongest of the Brothers, physically anyway. And when he was angry, it was scary as hell, the strength he could conjure up.
While I was managing to hold a fury-driven Raphael off, my right temple was smacked by the blunt handle of one of his sais. The impact caused me to black out instantly. I never told Splinter what really happened…
I could now see the Central Park gate coming up. Raph and I took our race to the rooftops. I was now way ahead of my turtle companion. “Eat my dust, Sewer Breath!” I teased, leaping down gracefully, feeling slight pain from the impact.
I made a beeline for the gate, using the last of my strength. I was five feet from the gate when my ankle gave out. I fell to the ground in pain, holding my even more sprained ankle. I bit my lip as I looked up and saw Raph at the Gate.
He was soon at my side, a look of concern in his eyes. “Ahh crap! I forgot about yer ankle! Why’d ya challenge me when you were in that kinda condition?!” Raphael scolded. I forgot to mention, during the fight, my clumsiness kicked in. I ended up spraining my left ankle.
“I kinda forgot about it too.” I frowned, sitting up on the sidewalk and rubbing my ankle. It was somewhat scratched up from the fall, as were my knees. Thankfully, I had on these leggings, so it wasn’t too bad. “But, I just wanted to see you smile. Even if I ended up getting hurt…” I admitted, pouting up at Raphael.
Raph’s face was covered with shock. “Ya dummy. C’mon, the movie’s gonna start soon.” He sighed, taking me into his arms. Raph was able to pick me up with such ease, almost like I was a featherweight to him.
“RAPH?!” I squeaked as he began to walk towards the movie theater. I could feel myself blushing, I did my best to make sure Raphael couldn’t see. I heard him chuckle softly so, I’m guessing he saw.
We were soon in the theater, I held up on the stake of the race and paid. Raphael objected to me paying since my loss was outside our control, I just bit him on the neck to shut him up.
The movie we saw was Critters. Both Raph and I actually walked out half-way through the flick, shaking our heads in disproval. “Ugh. Man, where do they come up with dis stuff?” Raph groaned.
I saw some suspicious looking kids and forewarned Raph. Sure enough, my instinct was correct. They snatched an old ladies purse! “Those lowlifes!” I growled under my breath. They were heading our way on their getaway. Raph acted quickly and tripped them, the purse went flying to a young man that was standing beside the old woman who promptly returned the handbag.
Raph and I turned our attention to the young ‘men’ crumpled on the concrete ground in front of us. They seemed like they wanted to pick a fight. Raph soon crushed any hopes of that, pulling his trench coat to reveal his one remaining Sai. The kids scampered off, leaping over the stone wall leading to the park.
We followed them and saw a human male knocking the kids around. He was wearing a hockey mask, so I couldn’t see his face. But he had shoulder length brown hair. Right as the man was about to hit the teenagers with a hockey stick, Raphael tackled him.
I was a bit peeved, Raph told me this was his fight. “How bout a five minute game misconduct for roughing, pal?!” Raph joked, I could see the confidence overflowing from him.
The man got up, his mask was now off. I had to admit, he was somewhat attractive…for a human anyway. “Hey, Bogey…who died and made you referee? You did your job. Now get outta here and let me do mine. These JV lowlifes need to be taught a lesson.” the vigilante male explained, clearly annoyed.
“Not like that they don’t. Not from you.” Raph said, shoving his hands in his pockets.
The man noticed the kids runoff, tails between their legs. “ Well, it looks like you’re the one who needs a lesson, pal.” he said, pulling out two baseball bats. “Class is Pain 101. Your instructor’s Casey Jones.” he introduced himself, spinning the bats around his gloved hands.
“I don’t wanna fight you.” Raphael sighed, shaking his head.
“Tough rocks, pal.” Casey said, shrugging his shoulders and launching himself at Raph, attempting to hit him with his bats, missing each time.
Raph caught one in his green hand and examined it. “A Jose Conseco bat? Tell me…ya didn’t pay money for dis.” Raph shot at the man.
“That’s it.” Casey growled, hitting Raph’s cloaked shell with a bat, causing my friend to fall to the ground. “Two-for-one sale pal.” Casey shot back.
‘Oh no! His hat!!!’ Raph’s face was now visible to Casey!
“Hey, what are you, some sort of Punker?” Casey asked in confusion.
Raph’s head shot up, baseball bat in hand. “Huh?”
“I hate punkers. Especially bald ones with green makeup, who wear masks over ugly faces.” Casey was definitely getting Raph worked up.
Raph was now moving to Casey, bat at the ready. He missed the first two strikes but jumped behind Casey and walloped him with the bat. “Home run!” he exclaimed, walking over to the fallen vigilante. He then set a foot on Casey, signifying that he won. “Raphael wins! One-nothing!” he cheered.
Casey rolled away from Raph. “Well?” Raphael asked playfully.
“New game, roundhead.” Casey said, standing up and pulling out another bat, yet this one looked different. “Cricket?”
“Cricket?! Nobody understands Cricket. Ya gotta know what a crumpet is ta understand Cricket!” Raph joked, feeling no threat.
“I’ll teach you.” Casey whispered, catching Raph in the face with the Cricket bat, sending him flying into a garbage can! “Six runs!”
“Raph!!” I cried, running to the trash can which had now tipped over.
“So long, freak! I got work to do!”
I knew this guy was asking for it now. “Freak?! FREAK?!” Raphael was now chasing after Casey. I tried the best I could to chase after Raph, but my condition wasn’t going to let that happen. I could hear Raph hollering in resentment towards Casey.
I decided to go back home and made it with no additional injuries. It was ten at night when I walked through the door. “Elisabetta.” an ancient, hoarse voice called out to me.
“Yes Master Splinter?” I asked, feeling exhausted. My ankle was hurting like hell too.
“Come sit by me please.” he requested, lighting a candle.
Knowing I had no choice, I hobbled over to my mentor and father.
“Something is troubling you, child, please tell me.” he asked calmly. I don’t know how Splinter did it, but he was always calm. It was kind of eerie at times.
“I’m worried about Raphael father. I wish I could help him with his anger. I hate seeing him like this.” I told him, feeling sadness suddenly flood my being. Every word was true.
“I know you care deeply for Raphael. You care so much about us, please do not ever see this as a weakness. Being as caring as you are Elisabetta, it is a strength. I know you will do all you can to keep your brothers safe. You have experienced much hardship in your life at already such a young age. In return, these hardships make you a much stronger person. I could not have asked for a better daughter. There is always a silver lining, Elisabetta.” Splinter told me, I swear, he was reading my soul.
I usually felt weak, a common feeling I am sure. Splinter would never lie to us though. “Thank you, Master Splinter.” I said, holding in a sob and hugging my father.
“Where is Raphael by the way?” he asked, releasing me from the embrace.
“Well, he kind of got into a fight with a human vigilante. I would’ve caught up with him easily if it wasn’t for my ankle. It was sprained during our first battle. And the race I had with Raph didn’t really help matters.” I explained, my ankle still stinging.
“Thank you for trying. I shall have a talk with him once he comes home.” Splinter sighed, he looked tired.
“Please father, don’t be too hard on him. He snapped and just took off. He doesn’t like being called a freak. Which he isn’t, none of my brothers nor you are freaks. You’re all the kindest people I’ve met in my life.” I said.
Splinter dismissed me to my room for the night. I sat down on my bed, feeling tired yet I couldn’t sleep. I was worried about Raphael. I walked over to my dresser and took off my clothes, throwing them to the side. I have become quite skilled with a sewing machine, so all my clothes besides my bras and panties are made by me.
I pulled out a big, black t-shirt and pulled it on over my black panties. I sat on the stained rug in the center of my room and sighed. “Please be safe, Raphael.” I prayed.
“What? Ya doubt me, Sassy?” I heard a gruff voice call out almost playfully. I turned my attention to my door and saw Raph.
I got up and ran to him, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Thank God you’re alright!!!” I cried happily.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” he asked, almost sounding insulted.
“I just worry is all.” I growled, hugging him tighter.
“Hey, Sassy, there’s sumthin I gotta ask ya about.” he said seriously.
I frowned, I hated serious moments. “Fine, shoot.” I groaned, strutting over to my bed.
“Why didn’t ya tell Splinter the truth about our last training…accident?” he asked, his voice full of regret.
“Because, I didn’t want you to get in trouble for something you can’t control. Besides, I shoulda said no. But I didn’t. Don’t get down about it.” I told him, sitting down on my bed.
Raph sighed and sat beside me. I soon felt a hand on my head. I winced slightly, holding back a hiss of pain as Raph’s hand rubbed against my temple. “I’m…sorry Elisabetta. I shouldn’t have asked ya ta train wit me dat night.” he frowned, not even looking at me.
“Like I said, don’t worry about it. Besides, it doesn’t hurt! And, think of it as a thank you for saving me 3 years ago.” I smiled, poking my temple, holding in a whimper of pain. Raph didn’t seem too reassured. “Come on! Stop worrying about it! I’m fine Raph!” I said, trying to reassure him.
“You don’t hafta thank me for dat! It was da right thing ta do! Anyone one of us woulda done da same thing in my…your situation!” he told me, his voice practically a whisper.
“Still, I’m standing by what I said.” I hmph-ed, my hard-headedness kicking in. I am usually stubborn, a childish stubborn.
“Fine.” he sounded annoyed at this point. What a touchy turtle.
I got up and hugged him again. “Night Raphael. Thanks for caring.” I whispered, kissing his cheek softly before retreating back to my bed.
I barely heard Raph utter a good night in return before he walked out of my room and closed the door.
