Five years had gone by since the death of his family. His children, the twins, were buried next to their mother in the cemetery. Wally, for once in his life, truly felt old. For the years after the mourning he had to keep himself busy. Constantly he would run errands for the Titans, Teen Titans, the Justice League and even the Justice Society.
It was all to keep his mind off of one thing…
How alone he was…
The empty house never felt the same, so he ended up selling it and now slept in the nearest superhero base he could find. Every now and then he would find a place on a friend’s couch, mainly Richard Grayson’s or Roy Harper‘s. He would always argue that it was because of how soft the other’s couches were. Yet that would be a lie.
Richard and Roy were always there for him through the hard times, and they always had a fully stocked fridge. Yet unlike Roy, Dick worked during the night, so that gave Wally some time to himself when he needed it. Also there was no little kid running around Dick’s place to remind him of his old life.
There were a few other reason he chose Dick over many of his other friends. The boy-wonder had been through just as much, if not more hardship. He might not have lost a wife and children, but the man had lost his parents, the woman he loved had deserted him after he had put his heart on the line after she was shot and paralyzed from the waist down, a little brother in a way and many more people along the hard road of being a bat kid.
Wally began to think about how he would have turned out if the bat had trained him. Maybe he wouldn’t be mourning still and he might have already moved on with his life. After all, he doubted the bat’s even had emotion half the time, especially when they were in uniform.
The door opening alerted him that someone was home. Slowly Wally opened his eyes, postponing his thoughts enough that he noticed that it was daytime outside. For the fastest man alive, he sure didn’t wake up fast. Getting off the couch seemed to take an eternity before he made it to the kitchen where Richard had gone.
The redhead looked over all of the grocery bags and wondered how long it really had taken him to get off of the couch. Dick gave him a smile as he put some of the items away. Before the brunette could even reach for the next item they were all in their rightful places and the bags were all balled up and put under the sink incase they were needed later.
“Thanks. Sorry I woke you as I came in,” Dick said as he opened the fridge to find some breakfast, or in his actual case, dinner.
“I know, it’s amazing. Don’t you pride yourself on being incredibly quiet?” the speedster teased.
Dick chuckled as he took out a sandwich he had made the day before and unwrapped it, “You try carrying an armful of plastic bags, dead tired, up the stairs, and unlock then open a door, AND be quiet all on top of that.”
The dazzling smile Dick put on almost drew Wally’s attention away from the hand print bruises around the man’s neck. No doubt there were more where that came from. Also Richard seemed to be favoring his left leg. Must have been a rough night. Then again in their line of work all of the nights and days were rough.
“Shouldn’t you be getting some sleep boy wonder?”
“Sleep? I’m sorry, I have no idea what that is,” Dick said before he moved over to his computer and began typing in a few things. “Besides I still have to clear up a few things in this case I’ve been working on. There are a few files in the police database that I need to pull up and I don’t want to have to wake up Babs to do it for me when I’m perfectly capable myself. Not to mention in two hours I have the trapeze lessons with the kids.”
With a slight turn of the head, Dick paused his work to look at Wally. For a while he seemed to be considering something before he finally blurted it out.
“Why don’t you come too? I could use a sidekick,” that same dazzling smile showed a more playful side this time.
“First of all, I am not a sidekick. Also I don’t think I’d be much help. You’re the acrobatic type and I’m the look good while running circles around everyone type.”
“Oh, and I don’t look good while doing my acrobatic shit?”
“Nope, not at all. All the girls just crowd around you because they want shopping tips,”
“Wow, for a minute I would have sworn you were Speedy accept you didn’t call me short-pants.”
They both shared a laugh at that and the idea got Dick thinking. His detective eyes began to instantly analyze Wally and compare him to Roy. There were a few similarities, but overall their personalities were normally separate enough that they could easily be told apart. When taking Roy’s and Wally’s appearances into account it was simple to tell the differences. For one, Wally was built better in the legs department and had a bit longer face instead of Roy’s wide jaw line. Not to mention all that running kept Wally’s rear firm and-
Dick quickly shook his head before turning back to the computer and starting up his work again. He had no time to think about those things. Not to mention it seemed Wally was still left out of the loop that Dick swung both ways. Most didn’t think that papa Bat would even dare let Dick think about the same gender. So it was surprising how the speedster would still tease him about being gay without even knowing it was true.
It wasn’t that Dick never considered flirting with Wally, it was just that he had no idea how the red head would react or if the man would just blow it off as a joke. The other had been married and had kids at one point in time. Their deaths still seemed to linger heavily on Wally’s heart and Dick just wasn’t sure if treading near that area of romance or relationships would even be possible yet.
“Dick, you’re working yourself too hard again, just like you used to,” Wally began. Dick gave him a curious look. “Actually it’s what you always do. Take a break for a while. I’m sure Barbara will be able to get the information quicker than you so it wont hurt to take a nap. I’ll contact her and ask her to gather the stuff while you’re asleep.”
“I’m not tired at all Wally, you can stop worrying. You’re not Donna or Alfred.”
“No, but neither of them are here and you’re going to start looking like you’ve been hit by a truck here soon if you don’t get some proper rest.”
“Just let me-”
Before Dick could finish he had been hauled up into strong arms and quickly placed in his bed. His mind couldn’t keep up with things as he was wrapped in blankets and his hair was gently pet as he laid in his bed, a bit stunned at how fast he had gotten there. With a small glare towards Wally he gave up. If he tried to do anything Wally might decide to race his computer half way across the world and might not bring it back unless he got what he wanted.
“Fine… Night, ‘Mother‘,” Dick said as he turned over to his side and snuggled into the covers.
“Sleep well, Nightwing,” Wally stated with a smirk before he headed out of the room so he could call Barbara without waking Dick.
For a little while he thought that he was home again. Over the few years he had been thinking and considering that maybe he should ask Dick to be a bit closer than a friend. He needed that closeness, the love and the sense of belonging again. It would never be the same as his wife, but maybe it could be something just as good, only different.
His fingers moved to each picture Dick had hung on his living room wall. There were a few with him and Barbara, then with Bruce and Alfred. The man almost had no pictures of any of his Titan friends. It would be too risky.
Probably something the bat taught the boy. Nowadays it was always ‘the bat’, not Batman. Wally never knew when the change had happened but it had. When they were kids they would always call Bruce that behind his back and ‘Mr. Batman’ to his face. Then in the league he got into the habit of calling him ‘bats’ or ‘Batman’. It was all probably due to being around Dick and Arsenal so much as of late.
A beeper on his belt went off and he rushed off to Keystone City. As usual it was just a pathetic excuse for a criminal trying to make a name for himself because supposedly the Flash was ‘out of town’. Unfortunately the man and his little rag-tag group didn’t estimate that the man could travel faster than Superman and stop their crimes in a blink of an eye when just seconds before he had been a few hours drive away.
Soon he was in the Oracle’s tower requesting the information to give to Nightwing. Luckily he wasn’t one to forget things. The fact that Dick would slaughter him if he didn’t keep his word also gave him a bit of an extra encouragement. It took such a long time though. He ran around half the world a few times before finally coming back to pick up the finished paperwork.
“So how are things going?” Barbara asked the man before passing over the pile of paperwork.
“What do you mean?” Wally asked as he grabbed the small pile.
“Well, I hear you’re living with Dick on and off, and now you’re running errands for him.”
“Oh… yeah… Things are good. I feel a bit guilty for eating all of his food. He’s a good friend though, not to mention he has been in need of a bit of help. Bludhaven isn’t exactly the easiest town to keep in check.”
“I hope you two are getting along other than that.”
“Yeah… yeah. I need to get back now. He wakes up without this and I’m toast,” Wally waved the paperwork in the air a bit before zooming out of there without another word.
