Ever since she was first awakened from foam and earth, Io loved flame. The way it danced was beauty incarnate, almost like Diana moved when she was angry. And heat was good too. If there was such a thing as too hot, Io had rarely come across it. She loved to tan in the sun when she wasn’t working (the sun was one big forge, working the worlds into weapons and letting people cool them), loved the feel of sun on her skin so dearly that she left her shoulders and back bare so she could feel it all the time.
As passionately as other Amazons felt about combat, Io felt about the forge. The motion of smithwork wasn’t a dance. It was force against force, beating and chiseling until the metal surrendered itself to her will and gave itself to her, to take the form she gave it. If only life were so acquiescent. There were such vexing problems that had arisen. Even in the forge Diana had set up for her in one of the subbasements in the Themysciran embassy she found no refuge.
It wasn’t that the forge wasn’t the equal of the one on Paradise Island, for it was, but something was missing. Something truly…
“Io! Io!” It was Artemis, unstrapping her armor as she entered the hellish embrace of the forge. She didn’t mind the heat either.
Io beat two more hammer-blows into the blade she was working on, then sunk it into a barrel of water. Steam wafted up in clouds, smelling of sweet victory.
“Over here, Artemis.”
Artemis entered her sphere, setting her armor down roughly atop Io’s anvil. Io winced. The breastplate was dented, pierced in places, with dried blood around the edges.
“Are you alright?” she asked, suddenly nervous.
Artemis laughed heartily. “Don’t waste your tears, little sister. I healed almost before the cut was made. Just fix it up, will yo…” She stopped flat, entranced by the sheen of the blade Io had finished before the redhead had arrived. “By Artemis’s blade, what an honor you’d bestow by cutting one with that?”
“Oh, th-that?” Io hurriedly stepped in front of that. “It’s nothing, just a little pet project…”
But despite her hardy muscles, Artemis was a few inches taller than the blacksmith. She peeked over Io’s shoulder and saw the sword. The filigree of the hilt was almost as bright as the blade.
“It is exquisite. For Diana, is it not?”
Io blushed beneath the grime and sweat. “Maybe. Well, if she wants it.”
Artemis grinned smugly. “You never make anything that pretty for me…”
“Maybe if you didn’t break everything five seconds after I gave it to you?”
Artemis pushed past Io. “Can I try it?”
“Just… be careful, okay?”
Artemis took the sword and smoothly wove it through the air. “Io, I am always careful.”
“That’s reassuring,” Io said with only mild sarcasm.
“You honor your patron with such craftsmanship,” Artemis said approvingly, before handing the sword to Io. “Although I have my doubts that is the favor you seek to curry.”
Io set the sword back on the wall, very deliberately keeping her back to Artemis, and her eyes safely away from her. “I seek the favor of… any who use my weapons…”
Artemis laughed again. It was really starting to get on Io’s nerves.
“Sister, we are all in love with Diana just a little.”
Io turned around before she could stop herself. “I’m not—I don’t—what, you think some silly little crush—“ She gave up. “The princess probably doesn’t even notice.”
“Trust me, she does.” Artemis smiled as she wiped a smudge from Io’s cheekbone. “And she cares most deeply.”
For a Bana-Midghall, Artemis could be… not such a bitch at times.
