Chapter 1
The air was cool and crisp as the wind howled, and the rain poured down upon the streets of New York. Even in the late hours of the night, the street was full of cars and life. People moved in and out of buildings and cars. Subways continuously arrived and departed in the never ending pulse of New York City. The people on the streets below would never realize that just above their heads, four heros guarded over, and helped those that were in need, every night. The four keep a watchful eye on over humans of New York, and also the man who claims to be the city's savior. That man, Oroku Saki, plans to rebuild New York after a long drawn out battle with an alien race. However, the four heroes know there is more to it then what Saki is leading everyone to believe. From above they watched the streets, making sure the humans remained safe, but unaware of them. They are ninja, and are used to living in the shadows never to reveal themselves. The four were five foot tall humanoid turtles. The humans would never accept let alone like them for that, but they are what they are. It doesn't stop them from applying their skills in the way of Bushido.
The first of the four heros, Leonardo, the eldest, was the leader. He stood at five feet two inches, with dazzling blue eyes under a blue mask. His weapon of choice was the twin katana, one of the deadliest weapons to be held by a ninja. Out of all the heros, he was the one that was the most skilled, level-headed, and in control of all of his emotions. Leo was also more in tune with the way of the Bushido. The second hero, Rapheal, was clad in a red mask, and stood at five feet one inch with grey eyes. His weapon of choice are the sais and unlike Leo, Raph is more hot-headed, tempermental, and emotional. Making him more dangerous with his weapons. Next of the four was Donatello, wearing a purple mask over his hazel eyes. Donnie also stood at five feet one inch. His weapon of choice was the bo staff. A rather simple weapon, but it was all he needed. With his skills, he could turn the stick of wood into a destructive force. Donnie much perferred, however, to avoid a fight if all possible. He'd much rather talk things out. He put his energy elsewhere, being fascinated in how the world around him worked, and his passion for the wonders of science and technology. The last was not only the youngest but the shortest of the four, Michaelangelo, stood at five feet high. Green eyes focused, under his orange mask, on the miniature game unit he held in his hands, rain pouring down upon his face. His weapon of choice was a pair of nunchuku. Each had two pieces of wood at the end held together by a short metal chain. It was a weapon best suited for a ninja whose personality was as wild and free such as his. Of all the heros, he was the most playful; the joker of their group. Mikey lived for a good practical joke. Even though they were turtles, they were brothers, but above all, they were ninjas, and they practiced the way of the shadows as they patrolled the city streets.
Michaelangelo, the orange masked one began to whine. "You know, dudes, the city is quiet. Why are we here? It’s cold and wet. I want to go back to the lair.”
"Mikey, you just want to go back so you can play your game,” Donatello, the purple masked turtle said.
"Enough," Leonardo, their leader interrupted, "You two will stay here until our patrol is done.”
"Leo, there is no sign of trouble," Mikey argued, "We're all cold and wet. Let's go home.”
"Mikey is right, Leo," Don agreed, starting to get annoyed with the wet conditions surrounding all of them, "Let's go home."
As much as Leo wanted to admit he was cold and wet too, he wanted to make sure every human in the city was safe before heading home. Looking down one last time on the streets below, Leo realized that his brothers were right. The streets were secure, returning home early probably would not hurt anything. Finally giving in, Leo turned way from the streets below, and stared deeply into his red masked brother's gray eyes. An angry expression was present on his brother's face. Leo let out one long sigh as he started to walk away from his brothers. He paused just long enough to turn to them and announce they were going home. Then he resumed walking. Happily, Mike jumped to his feet, and ran to catch up with his brothers who were already well ahead of him.
Once they returned to their home, they were greeted by their master and father, Splinter. He was a 4'8" rat with skills in ninjitsu that far preceded his age. He wore an old tattered robe and carried a walking stick, aiding him as he walked towards them. His brown eyes looked closely into his eldest son's blue one's, and concern rose on his face.
“< What’s wrong, Master?>” Leonardo asked his father, speaking in the Japanese language he and his brothers often used with their Sensei.
"< You have returned early my son.>"
"< Yes, Master. The city is quiet. There was no need for us to be out longer than we should >"
"< Very well. Since you have all returned, then you are all strong enough to do some katas. >"
"Oh," they groaned in unison.
After a few more minutes of arguing, they realized there was no getting around the training, and gave in to their Master's request. After drying themselves off, they all walked into the dojo and prepared for a major workout that their Sensei had planned for them. They began by warming up their muscles. Then without any words, they turned to their Sensei and bowed, waiting for his instructions.
“ We will begin the katas,” Splinter told them firmly, with the slight Japanese accent in his voice. He paused a moment then continued. "Ready? Front thrust kick! “ he barked.
"Hyah!” the four brothers yelled.
"Back thrust kick!"
"Hyah!"
"Again!"
"Hyah!"
"High arm block!"
"Hyah!"
"Again!"
"Hyah!"
"Roundhouse kick!"
"Hyah!"
"Again!"
"Hyah!"
"Good," their master approved, "Now that you are warmed up, my sons, it is
time for the sparring."
Once more they bowed to their master and awaited to be paired off. They were matched up in the usual manner. Leonardo was to spar with Raphael and Donatello with Michelangelo. Don began with a high kick which Mikey barely dodged. He then countered with a low leg sweep, knocking Don to the ground. OInce on his feet, he returned it with high kicks and punches at
Mike, nearly taking off Mike's head. Frustrated, Don jumped on Mike,
knocking him to the floor. Leo and Raph saw this angered attempt, and
stopped their own sparring long enough to watch their brothers' rolling and
punching at one another. Mike, who was now very frustrated at his brother's
act, punched at Don in the side of the face. The blow knocked him off his
feet, dazing him in the process.
"Oh, that’s got to hurt!" Raph said, in between his laughter.
"I think he’s gonna have a bruise," Leo added, through his own chuckles.
Quickly regaining his composure, Don went after Mike with a high punch, but
mike ducked it easily.
"Oh, he swings and misses," they both laugh hard, "Strike one."
Another punch was thrown and again Mike evaded.
"Oh, strike two, Don," Leo said, with a smile.
Angered by his brother's comment, Don turned to Leo, swinging at him. Leo
was unaware of his brother's act and received a punch to the side of the
face.
"Oh, it's going, going!" Raph yelled, "Home run by Donatello Hamato!”
"You god damn brat!" Leo barked at Don, "I’m gonna fucking kick your ass!"
Seeing the anger in his bother's face, Don decided to bolt for the door, but found his path blocked by Mike, who was waiting for him there. Don
whirled around just long enough to receive a kick to the face, sending his
body in the air. He did a 360, then landed flat on his face. Weakly, Don
stood up, blood seeping from his mouth and nose. He turned to walk away,
but was stopped by his father's hand.
"Enough," the old rat ordered, "We are finished for tonight."
Looking deeply into his son's eyes he continued speaking, "Donatello, let me tend to your wounds. Leonardo, after I take care of your brother, I wish to speak to you."
"Hai, Sensei."
Leonardo turned to his brothers. No words were exchanged, but Raph could sense his brothers frustration and concern. Leonardo headed toward the bathroom, where he remained for quite some time. When he finally emerged later, Leo still did not feel any better about hitting his brother. It was
the first time Leo felt like he was losing control of his emotions. Moving
towards the living room, he saw Don at the table tinkering with something.
Leo stopped, and turned to Don, his mouth open, but no words came out. His
other brothers sat at the couch arguing who was winning the game they were
playing. Both looked up as Leo entered the room. Pausing in the game, Mike
looked at Raph, and then back at Leo.
"Master splinter wants to see you, Leo."
"I know."
Mike and Raph made no more comments. Instead, restarted their game, and continued arguing. Leo let out a long sigh, and walked to their Sensei’s room. Stopping just outside his door, Leo lifted his arm and knocked. No response. Leo knocked again, and still the silence remained. Leo turned to
leave, thinking that his master was meditating, and should not disturb him.
As he began moving away, he heard a low voice from inside the room, "You do not need to knock, Leonardo. Come in."
"< Am I disturbing your meditation, Master Splinter? >”
"< No, Leonardo. Please sit .>"
Leonardo did as he was told, and sat in a lotus position across from his master. The old rat continued. "< Leonardo, tell me why you hit your brother
as you did? >"
"< He provoked me, Sensei. >" He looked away and let out a long sigh.
“< Yes, he did, but as the eldest, and leader, you must not let your anger get in the way of your judgement. >"
“< Yes, Sensei. I understand. >"
"< Good. I can trust it won’t happen again? >"
"< No, Sensei, it won’t. >"
"< Good. Now please go to your brother and apologize for your actions. I believe he will return the apology as well. >"
"< Yes, Sensei. >"
Leonardo stood, and turned to the door. Once outside, Leo headed straight to his brother, who was still engrossed with his work. Realizing something was about to go down, Mike and Raph again stopped their game long enough to watch what was about to unfold. Standing up, Don came in contact with his brothers blue eyes. Sorrow came to Leo’s face as he looked at Don. No words were said in those few minutes, until both brothers put their arms around each other and hugged. The silence was then broken.
"Sorry, bro, about the kick," Leo told him, between tears.
"No, Leo, I deserved it."
Mike looked at Raph and both smiled, then went back to their game. All was well with the family they both thought, and the evening rolled on. Splinter retired around 11 PM and Raph and Mike continued to play their game. Though now they had Don, who had stopped with his tinkering for the night to watch and cheer on his two brothers. Leo looked around the lair and decided then he would go to his room, and finish a book he started to read a couple of nights before. Saying his goodnights, Leo entered his room. He struck a match and lit the candle on his nightstand. Once he was comfortable, Leo picked up his book, and started to read.
Deep in the sewers, a body moved silently and swiftly through the dark tunnels, staying in the shadows. The ninja weaved in and out of the shadows towards its target. Senses fully heightened, the ninja moved inside the lair of the unsuspecting turtles and their master. The ninja waited a few moments to see if it had been spotted. When it was certain they hadn't noticed, the ninja peered cautiously into the darkness. It could see three turtles sitting on the couch. Two were engaged in a video game, and the other was talking to
his brothers. Before the ninja knew it, the room became silent. The purple
masked turtle quieted his two brothers, and strained to listen for any
sounds.
"Did you hear that?" Don asked, in a hushed tone.
"I didn’t hear anything, dude," Mike answered.
"Yeah, Don. I think you're hearing things.”
"Maybe you're right."
He turned back to see his brothers involved in the game once more. Relieved the brothers had dismissed the noise, and were distracted again, the ninja continued its quest. Once the ninja found the room it desired, the ninja
entered to see Leonardo sitting on his pillow, reading a book. Stepping
closer, the ninja stretched out its arm ready, to fight the lone turtle.
However, before the hand came down, Leonardo moved quickly to the candle,
blowing it out. Darkness engulfed the room. Leo grabbed the ninja who
continued kicking and punching at him for its freedom. After a few more
minutes of fighting, Leo was able to pin the ninja down with one hand, his
body on top of its. With his free hand, Leo lit the candle once more, then
returned his attention to his captive. He removed the mask, and shock
rocked his body as he watched a woman’s body below him heave with
frustration. The woman was no older then he. She was of Japanese descent,
and around the same height with shoulder length black hair. On the shoulder
of the dogi she wore, was a crest of the Foot. Words failed him. The only thing he could say was her name.
"KARAI!!!"
