Disclaimer: I do not own the teen titans.
Authors note: This story is mostly based on my character and his interactions with the teen titans and their lives. I know it’s a rather long first chapter but I just got in the groove and kept writing. The other chapters will be shorter. As for the character bio ill make it brief. Kyle moved to jump city a year or so ago. He has heard of the titans but never really seen them. He is in his mid 20’s.
A Bad Day
*Click*
“-ood morning everyone. The time is 7:51am and it’s a nice and balmy 73 degrees here in Jump City, with a high of 87 so be sure to get out of those offices and enjoy the weather. This is Jim Swift of KQAL, bringing you the music to start your day. And now here’s-”
*Slam!*
“Oh, shut the fuck up.” Groaned a sleepy voice.
The figure lazily removed its hand from the snooze button on the old clock radio. With a sigh, it got up from worn bed and threw back the old thread bare sheets and shuffled towards the bathroom. Flicking on the light he looked at the face staring back at him from the mirror. It was plain. Nothing at all was distinguishing about it. No cool scars to explain to the ladies, no birthmark, nothing. Just a simple face, housing plain brown hair and dreary grey eyes. Those eyes looked down at the sink, staring at the tools needed to start his daily ritual.
The same thing day in, day out. Apply shaving cream, wet dull razor, shave then shower. Get dressed in the cheap beige suit, pop some pop-tarts and pour a cup of coffee for breakfast.
God my life sucks.
Making one last check to make sure he had everything he looked around the apartment, if you could call it that. The place was falling apart. Water stains on the ceiling, holes in a few of the walls and scorch marks on the carpet. Lord knows how they got there. Having everything he needs he opens the door to the hallway and closes it… or at least tries to. After the third try he managed to get the warped door to fit and locked it then proceeded down the hallway to the stairs.
Reaching the main floor he walks past an elderly woman carrying a bag of groceries in each arm; a resident of this “fine” establishment.
“Mrs. Matthews? Do you need any help with those?”
“Hm? Oh! Kyle. I didn’t see you there. That’s so sweet of you to offer but I can handle it. Besides, you’re going to miss your ride if you don’t hurry.”
“Shoot.” He said checking his watch then quickly turning around and made a dash for the door. The old lady just chuckled to herself and continued her way up the stairs.
Just as he was about to reach the doorknob, Kyle heard a loud booming voice behind him yell “RENT!”
Grimacing he turned around and looked at the person bellowing at him. It was Mr. Rothheim, the tenant. He was a rather stout man, standing at 5’ 10” with a wide girth around his midsection. Today he wore his usual dirty white tank top and black pants help up by the suspenders over his shoulders. He was originally from somewhere in the northeast; like Russia or maybe even Ukraine. He was also the cheapest son of a bitch Kyle knew.
“Kyle! Your rent is past due.”
“I know Mr. Rothhiem, I know. I get my paycheck today so I can pay you when I get back.”
Mr.Rothheim scowled “You’d better! If I don’t get my $650 by the end of the day I throw all your things out in the trash!”
“$650?! What happened to the standard $600?”
“If you’re late on your payment I add on penalty fees.” Mr.Rothheim said smugly.
Kyle was about to retort with a few well placed insults but checking his watch again he realized it would have to wait. Taking a deep breath he calmly replied.
“Fine, Mr. Rothheim. I’ll pay you when I get back.” He said and dashed out the door to the bus stop.
Finally reaching the bus stop, Kyle bent over to try and catch his breath. He didn’t have long though, as the bus just pulled up and opened its doors.
“Hey Kyle. You just made it.” The bus driver said.
“Hey Dave.” He said slightly winded. “How’re you doing’?”
“Eh, can’t complain.” Dave said as Kyle paid his fair.
Kyle made his way towards the back, trying to find a seat in the over crowded bus on the way. Being unsuccessful he grabbed one of the support bars overhead and held on for the ride. Usually it takes about an hour to get from his apartment to work and during that time he would analyze his life to see how good he has it. Last time he did that was over a year ago. Now he just silently observes the other passengers.
There was usually quite a variety of people that took the bus and today was no exception. Kyle saw a few elderly people sitting down on the seats, some holding groceries and others holding briefcases. Punk kids with their multicolored hair and piercings through their skin and even a few average Joes like himself. Kyle watched the scenery outside transform from the rundown downtown to the office buildings as they began to enter the city limits. He found his mind wandering off until the bus stopped and the doors opened.
A couple of business men got on but what really got his attention was the young woman that followed them. She looked to be in her teens and carried a deep red backpack. She wore a black baseball cap with what looked like two yellow cat eyes on them. The cap hid most of her hair but he could see a few strands of pink flowing down from the hat. She wore a pair of dark rimless sunglasses and black jean shorts and a black shirt that showed a pair of white fangs and underneath that it said “Bite Me!” in white. She moved past the businessmen and the people getting off, made her way to the back near Kyle and took an unoccupied seat behind him. After that everything seemed to go on its usual way. The bus stopped again and more people got off to the point where the back of the bus was open seats. As the bus continued its route Kyle felt something touch him. He didn’t move at first, but then he felt something enter his front right pocket.
A pickpocket?! It must be that girl from before. My, she’s bold to do that on a bus, but then again there really isn’t anyone nearby to notice.
Just when the dainty hand grasped his wallet Kyle quickly grabbed her wrist and without turning around, yanked the hand forward, causing the girl to stand right behind him. Kyle let go of the overhead bar and using both hands, gently inspected hers.
“My, aren’t we cutting to the chase. As a rule I usually date a woman first before I let her get anywhere near my lower extremities.” Kyle quietly spoke so only himself and the girl could hear. “That seems like such a shame though. Maybe this time I’ll make an exception?”
Kyle turned around still holding her hand. She was short compared to his 6 foot frame but even though he was taller he could sense that she was glaring at him through the sunglasses in defiance and frustration at being caught but they didn’t hide the deep blush on her cheeks that his words had caused. She hesitated slightly as they both noticed an officer had gotten on from their current stop, but she spoke, nearly whispered,
“Are…are you going to….” She didn’t complete her sentence but merely motioned to the officer.
“Turn you in?” Kyle said, finishing her sentence. She nodded. “No.” He said smiling. “No I’m not going to do that. Just make sure that you don’t get your hands into the pants of every guy you see. The next guy that catches you might not be so lenient.”
The girl simply scoffed and sat back down. The rest of the ride though brief was uneventful but Kyle could feel the gaze of the young woman on him until he got off at his stop. Walking up to the double doors of his work he looked up at the sight for the car dealership, sighed and walked through. Almost immediately a harsh voice assaults his ears.
“KYLE! Where the hell have you been?! You’re late!” It was Mr. Darren, the regional manager.
“I’m only three minutes late sir.”
“Late is late! You’re always late! You’re lucky you still have a job here.”
“Of course sir.”
“Shut up and get to work. We have customers waiting.”
The day went by slowly with the constant assault from his boss and his other coworkers stealing clients out from under him. It went even more slowly when Mr. Darren often took breaks to deal cars to some unsavory people and to spend some quality time with his mistress the secretary. Once it was finally over and he was preparing to leave he was stopped by his boss.
“Kyle! I need you to deposit this envelope at the bank. I would do it myself but, ah, I have to work late.” He said handing him the large brown envelope and winking at his secretary.
*Sigh* “Alright sir, I’ll do it.”
“Good. And don’t even think of ‘borrowing’ a few bills from the envelope. I already gave you your paycheck and I’ll know if you do and it will be your ass!”
“Yes, sir.” Kyle said turning towards the door.
I wonder if you would be all high and mighty if your wife somehow found out you were cheating on her. Kyle thought, imagining his boss cowering in fear in the shadow if his wife. He smiled all the way to the bank. Standing in line he impatiently tapped his foot wondering what was taking so long when he realized he really didn’t have anywhere he needed to be. Needless to say that brought him down.
Damn, it’s already 5:30. He thought looking at his watch. I’d better get home soon or I won’t have a home to go to!
Just as he finished his thought, a tremendous explosion came from behind him, the force of it knocking him down. After recovering, Kyle quickly looked to where the explosion originated from. Standing in the hole of what once was the doorway were three people. On the left was a giant of a man. Seriously, he made a gorilla look like and infant! On the right, connected to two pairs of robotic spider legs was what looked like a midget at first glance but when Kyle took a better look it was a rather short kid with goggles on his head and a rather nasty looking laser rifle in his hands. In between them stood what Kyle guessed was the leader, a young woman with bright pink hair and had pink slited eyes. She wore a black one piece skirt and a thin black leather choker around her neck. From what he had heard around the city, these where the three people that caused a lot of trouble for the local heroes of the city.
“Alright ladies and gentlemen. You know the drill everybody down and valuables out!” She shouted.
Immediately everyone hit the floor and got out their money and other valuables. As the robotics kid went around and collected everyone’s precious items, the big guy and the girl headed towards the vault. The girl used some sort of magical attack to destroy the hinges and the big guy lifted the vault door, tossed it aside and they both proceeded in looting the vault. It didn’t take long for them to fill their bags and just as they were ready to leave…
“Hold it right there!”
Kyle removed his face from the floor and looked once again to the giant hole in the wall. Where once stood the criminals now stood the heroes. At least he thought so. He’d never really seen the widely spoken Teen Titans before. In the middle was what Kyle could only assume was Robin, decked out in his red, black and yellow costume. To his left was a big guy which he figured is Cyborg do to him being mostly machine, and next to him was a small scrawny guy who looked like he was going to be sick at first, but then he realized green was his actual skin color.
Guess that must be Beastboy.
To the left of Robin he saw a gorgeous red head with green eyes and skin holding a slight yellow tint to it. Kyle figured she was Starfire. She wore a somewhat skimpy purple outfit. Next to her was a hooded woman who wore a black skin tight leotard and a gold chain belt. What was really curious about her is her skin tone instead of white it was an off grey.
And that just leaves one left. The grey girl must be Raven.
“Ah, the Teen Titans. You can’t stop us, so why don’t you go back to you clubhouse so we don’t have to waste our time beating you into the ground?” Said the villainous girl.
“I don’t think so! Titans go!” shouted Robin.
As soon as he spoke, the titans fanned out and took on the closest enemy. Cyborg and Beastboy went after the short boy genius while Robin and Starfire attacked the big guy which left Raven to take on the leader. While they fought, the people in the bank went into a panic. A few of them nearly got hit by a stray blast trying to run out of the building. Kyle being smart, decided to take cover behind one of the tellers stations and wait for the battle to be over before risking leaving. Loud crashes were heard and a few stray laser shots singed the walls. After a few more moments of hiding, Kyle slowly poked his head out to see if there was an opening anywhere since the fight didn’t seem to be dying down.
Suddenly a stray shot hit the ceiling. Large cracks spread out from the point of impact and large chunks began falling down. It was at that point that the heroes and villains realized that it was time to end their skirmish. After a few more choice hits both the big guy and the kid made their escape.
“Titans! Fall Back!” Robin shouted and retreated out of the building.
Kyle thought he had the right idea and made his way out too. About half way out he saw two people in a scuffle off to his right. It was Raven and the girl, still going at it. Kyle heard a loud groan coming from above and giant cracks in the ceiling appeared over the girls. A bad sign. He looked at the exit, then back at the girls, then the exit.
Damn you conscience! He thought.
He made a mad dash for the two girls just as a large chunk of the roof caved in. The pink haired girl managed to get out from under the shadow of the concrete slab on her own, but Raven was still underneath it. Increasing his pace he sped towards her and pushed her, sending her sliding on the floor to safety. Kyle looked up and saw the slab coming at him.
Ah crap.
The last thing he saw was a flash of pink light and then darkness….
Kyle cringed as he opened his eyes. All he could see was a bright, searing light dominating his vision. I see the light, but where’s the tunnel? He thought. Kyle brought his hand up to shield his eyes and noticed it was bandaged.
Bandages?
Kyle blinked his eyes a few times trying to get his eyes used to the light. Once he was successful he slowly sat up and inhaled sharply at the intense pain in his ribs. He did a once over of his body, noting the various bandages and bruises that covered his body. It was only then did the full effect of the pain struck. He hurt so much he nearly passed out.
“Oh man, It feels like I got hit by a semi.” He said to himself. Or so he thought.
“Not exactly. It was a giant concrete slab.”
Kyle looked up at the speaker. It was Robin, the team leader. He was holding a tray with various instruments and bandages. “Glad to see you’re awake. You had us worried for a while.” He said walking over and setting the tray down.
“What…what happened?”
“You don’t remember?”
“It’s all a blur. I can’t make out anything clear.”
“You rescued Raven. You pushed her out of the path of a slab of concrete before it fell on her.”
“Yeah…yeah I remember now. Where am I?”
“You’re at the titan’s tower.” Robin said undoing Kyle’s bandages. “We brought you here after we dug you out of the rubble. You were pretty badly dinged up.”
“How long have I been out?”
“Four days.”
“FOUR DAYS?!” Kyle said shooting to his feet. He regretted that instantly. His head went from a dull throbbing pain to a roaring pounding. He immediately sat down again.
“Relax, Kyle. You need to stay still. What’s so urgent that would get you riled up in your state?”
“Well, I guess it doesn’t matter now.” Kyle muttered. “By the way, why did you bring me here and not the hospital?”
“Well, when it comes to treating a hero there are certain people that treat us off the book. We had someone come in and exam you. With the exception of a few broken ribs and a fractured heel your fine. Really, you’re lucky this is all you got away with.”
Tell me about it
Just then, the medical wings door opened and in walked the redheaded beauty, Starfire. She didn’t notice Kyle at first; she seemed to be looking for something.
“Robin, have you seen-“Her green eyes rest on Kyle. She gasps and zooms to him and gives him a bone crushing hug.
“Friend Kyle!” She said while crushing the life out of him. “I am so glad to see you are well! We were all very worried!”
“Uh, Starfire, you might want to let go now. He’s starting to turn blue.”
Starfire looked up to Kyle’s face and saw that Robin was right. She immediately let go and Kyle wheezed in a few breaths.
“Sorry.”
“No problem. *cough* my ribs were already broken anyway.”
Either she didn’t get the joke or she didn’t hear him.
“I must tell everyone else that you are well. They will be relieved to hear it.” She said then flew to the door and disappeared down the hall.
“Wow. She’s a strong one isn’t she?” Kyle said wiping some of the unshed tears from his eyes.
“Hurt you did she? I keep on telling her, be gentle. Humans aren’t as durable as Tamaraneans. How are you doing? Can you walk?”
“Yeah I think so. Left foots a bit tender but I can hobble around.”
“Better not risk it. Here” Robin said handing Kyle a pair of crutches. Once they were in place Robin kept pace with Kyle’s slow steps, making sure he could handle getting around. After some progress, Robin brought Kyle to the main room in the center of the tower. As the doors hissed open Kyle was awestruck at all the high tech equipment they had. Jumbo high def screen, fully furnished kitchen and leather couches arranged in a half circle.
“Hey guys. Look who’s up and about.”
Immediately a bald head and green face poked up from the couch and looked over in their direction. Seeing who it was the jumped up from the couch and ran over.
“Kyle! Hey man, how are ya?” Cyborg said.
“Dude! You feeling better?” Beastboy said shortly after him.
“Yeah. I’m fine. How do you guys know my name? I’ve never met any of you before. And why were you all so worried about me?”
“Your wallet man.” Cyborg said holding it up. “Gave us everything we needed to know. As for why we were worried well…” He scratched his head nervously,” We never really had anyone do what you did before. We didn’t know what to do. If it weren’t for Robin and Raven keeping their heads you might not be here.”
Just as Cyborg finished explaining, the main door hissed open again, revealing Starfire and Raven. Raven walked towards the small group and gave a quick glance to Kyle.
“You’re doing better I see. Good. I-we were worried about you as you can see.” She said nodding to the other titans.
“Yeah. Thank you, all of you for saving me.”
“It’s us who should be thanking you. You risked your life to save Raven. A lesser man would’ve saved his own hide.” Robin said.
“Yeah, well, my parents did something right then eh?” Kyle said hoping over to the semi circle of couches. He plopped down and set the crutches off to his side.
“Speaking of parents is there anyone we should contact for you? Someone you could stay with to help you until you’re completely healed?” Raven said.
Kyle chuckled. “Boy, are you that eager to get rid of me? Is this how you treat all your would be saviors?” He chuckled even more when he saw the blush of embarrassment grace her cheeks. “Heh, relax, I’m just teasing you Raven. No I don’t have anyone to contact or stay with. My families dead and my girlfriend left me months ago.”
“Dude. Sorry to hear that.” Beastboy sympathized.
“Thanks. Seriously though, would it be alright for me to stay here? At least till I’m fully recovered?”
“Of course.” Said Robin. “It’s the least we can do; but we don’t exactly have any open rooms at the moment so you’re going to have to bunk with someone.” Robin looked at the titans. “Any volunteers?”
Almost immediately Beastboy’s hand shot up. “OH! He can stay with me I got a bunk bed.”
“Dude, your place is a sty. He’s liable to get more broken limbs if he stays with you!” Cyborg said giving a smug look. “He can stay with me.”
“Cyborg, your place is a body shop. You don’t even have a bed!” Beastboy countered giving an arrogant look of his own to him.
“Ah! Friend Kyle can do the bunking with me. I have room to spare.”
“I don’t know Starfire. Silky might eat him when he’s asleep.”
“No, Silky would never do that.”
“Oh no? That little monster bit my arm of and ate it! And it was made out of titanium alloy!! Imagine what that thing could do to flesh and bone?” Cyborg ranted.
“Ok that’s a no on Starfire.” Robin said. “Well, my place is a little small but I guess-“
“He’ll stay with me.”
Everyone looked in surprise at the only person who hadn’t said a word during the entire discussion. Raven look slightly surprised herself. She quickly regained her composure and gave her reason.
“Kyle can stay with me. I have extra space in my meditation room that he can use. Besides he saved me so I owe him.”
Her sound logic seemed to have worked as everyone else nodded their head in agreement.
“Ok then its settled. Kyle will be bunking with Raven for awhile. Raven why don’t you show Kyle where he’ll be staying. “
Motioning for Kyle to follow she headed for the door.
Well, from the shittiest apartment and dead end job to high tech quarters and staying with a beautiful girl. Things are finally looking up.
Well that’s it. Feedbacks whether praise or flames would be appreciated. Thanks =)
