Gotham City
“They must still be in there, Dinah” said Huntress, handing over the set of binoculars.
Black Canary zoomed in on the obviously forced in door to the back of the high end jewelry store. The soft, pale light cascading from a full moon illuminated the surrounding alleyway just enough to make out the details. From their vantage point, on top of a taller adjacent building, the two heroines could survey the entire scene with ease.
“This whole thing seems strange,” observed Black Canary. “It’s like something isn’t quite right.”
“Like what?”
“How come there’s no getaway vehicle? And whoever is in there still hasn’t come out yet. It’s like they’re waiting for something.”
“I know what they’re waiting for,” said Huntress, reaching for her utility belt.
The raven haired beauty quickly shot a zip line to the lower jewelry store building with her crossbow. “They’re waiting for us to give them a butt kicking,” she smiled.
Dinah sighed as she watched Huntress slide down the cable before landing softly on the ground below. The blonde bombshell shrugged before following her reckless comrade’s lead.
The inside of the store was pitch black and a couple of the glass display cases had been shattered. Yet there didn’t seem to be any jewelry actually missing.
“Where are they?” asked Helena, her eyes darting left to right in a vain attempt to spot the thieves.
She flicked the light switch to the right of the doorway but nothing happened. Whoever had broken in had disabled the electricity as well as the security cameras inside and outside the building.
“How many times do I have to tell you not to rush head first into things,” scolded Black Canary as she came up from behind. “You never know what could be—”
Out of the blanket of darkness metallic tentacles shot out and wrapped themselves tightly around Black Canary’s throat and wrists. She could feel the cold, stainless steel against her bare skin and was completely immobilized. The stunned heroine looked over in terror to see Huntress in a similar predicament. Both women struggled hopelessly trying to break free from their still unseen attacker.
“Helena Bertinelli: alias The Huntress and Dinah Lance: alias Black Canary,” announced decidedly mechanical sounding voice.
“Br…Brainiac!” Huntress gasped.
“You are correct,” said the artificially intelligent, alien android. “Like typical humans, you fell clumsily into my trap allowing my robot drones to capture you.”
Black Canary tried desperately to unleash her patented canary cry, a high powered, ultrasonic scream, but the snake-like tentacle nearly strangling her made it impossible. She couldn’t even talk much less let loose such an attack.
“After my last encounter with the Kryptonian, Kal-El, my body was destroyed,” continued Brainiac. “But over time I have been able to construct a new one. Now I seek what you humans call revenge. It is a pitiful lower level organic desire, but it does hold a unique interest to me. Even though I had hoped to capture specimens with a greater amount of power, you two females will have to do.”
“Let us…go and we’ll…show you a something about revenge firsthand you hunk of junk!” shouted Huntress.
“No I think not,” retorted Brainiac. “I will use the both of you, two trusted Justice League companions, to exact my revenge on Superman. Kal-El will not suspect a thing…until it is too late.”
“And how do you figure we’re going to do anything you say?”
Brainiac walked closer and held his pointer finger in front of Huntress’ face. She gasped as the top of the android’s finger popped off like a soda cap, revealing a long hypodermic needle underneath.
“Oh you will come to see that I have my ways,” he said almost gleefully.

Justice League Headquarters
Superman watched the multiple view screens with utter boredom. He never liked having night monitor duty and he usually wouldn’t have to because Batman or Martian Manhunter volunteered most of the time. But with J’onn on a space mission and Batman not answering his communicator like usual the Man of Steel had no choice.
It wasn’t as if he was tired, as he didn’t really need to sleep. It was just that nothing exciting ever happened during monitor duty at this time of night. Still that was a good thing, he thought. If nothing was happening then it meant the bad guys weren’t up to anything.
He took a look around the high tech control center and noticed how truly quiet and dead it seemed. The entire base, a satellite hovering just out of Earth’s atmosphere, was nearly empty at the moment. There was only a skeleton crew of personnel on the lower levels. Most of the other superheroes were back on the ground taking care of their respective cities or territories.
Superman picked up a pencil and began absent mindedly tapping it against his chair. He had just gotten a slight beat going when a warning message flashed across one of the monitors.
“WARNING: Unidentified intruder(s) have breached the Fortress of Solitude’s security net.”
Superman was caught off guard by the alarm. None of his enemies knew where the Fortress was located and less than a handful even knew of its existence. Who could’ve broken in?
“What’s going on, Superman?” Huntress asked, running in through the automatic sliding doors. “I saw the warning message pop up on one of the security computers.”
“I didn’t know you were even here, Helena. Anyway from the looks of things someone has breached the Fortress so I think it’s only fair if I give them a ‘proper’ welcome.”
“Wait, I’ll go with you,” offered Huntress.
Superman nodded. Faces of numerous enemies raced through his brain even as he sprang from the chair toward an awaiting teleporter. He allowed Huntress to key in the proper coordinates and codes. There was a momentary whirring noise and a flash of light before they were instantly transported to his secret arctic base.

The two superheroes raced down the long entrance tunnel made of a combination of ice and Kryptonian crystals. Superman paused for a moment and listened. His super hearing had picked up a faint voice from deep within the structure.
“What is it?” Huntress asked curiously.
“Someone is definitely still here. Do you mind if I…”
“Go on ahead,” Huntress said, already knowing what he intended. “I’ll catch up to you.”
Superman left his feet and jetted past the glass enclosures housing various alien animals, numerous kryptonian relics and statues, and many other wondrous sites until he came to a halt near the large living quarters. There he saw her- a blonde woman lying motionless on the floor. She was on her side with her back to him but he recognized her almost immediately.
“Black Canary!” he shouted.
He was at her side in the blink of an eye.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” he asked with concern.
“H-help me, Superman,” she uttered weakly.
“Don’t worry; I’ll get you to the satellite medical station,” he reassured. “You’re going to be fine.”
“However you will not be so fortunate, Kal-El,” an all too familiar voice declared from the opposite end of the room.
Superman turned just in time to see Brainiac throw a switch on the wall. Glaring red beams, emanating from stadium style lights, immediately flooded every corner of the gigantic room. The multitude of crystal stalactites suspended from the ceiling only helped refract the light in thousands of different angles.
“Aaahh!” The Man of Steel gritted his teeth and cringed in obvious pain.
“As you how no doubt noticed, kryptonian, this is no ordinary light. It is the light from a red sun to be exact,” Brainiac stated apathetically.
“And these,” he gestured to his left, right, and front, “are high powered solar lamps capable of emitting concentrated rays of your native sun. Your powers have already diminished greatly. In a matter of minutes, you will be no more than a normal man.”
Superman took several labored steps toward his nemesis. “You’re even… dumber than I thought if you think this is all it’ll take to stop me, Brainiac.”
“You are absolutely correct, Kal-El” the android half smiled. “I will not be the one that is going to stop you. She is.”
Superman’s eyes widened as Huntress stepped into the room behind Brainiac. He barely had time to react as the purple and black costumed woman ran forward, leapt into the air, and planted a fierce roundhouse kick to his temple. The Man of Steel staggered back in shock as well as pain.
“What the hell are you doing, Huntress?!” he shouted, still holding the side of his head.
“Whatever my master commands,” she responded flatly.
“Did I neglect to mention that she is now completely under my control?” asked Brainiac. “It would seem the nanobots I injected into her body are working most efficiently.”
“No!” Superman clenched his fists. “I won’t let you do this to her!”
“You have no say in the matter. Huntress, take him down by any means possible,” the android commanded.
Helena made no hesitation as she fired off a combination of whirling martial arts kicks. Superman managed to block a few but it was impossible to stop them all. A number of blows connected and he fell to one knee, his body throbbing in pain. His invulnerability and multitude of powers were gone.
As much as he was against it, he would have to take his former comrade down as quickly as possible. Though her fighting skills were superior to his, Superman still had the size and strength advantage. That would have to be enough.
He waited for Huntress to come at him again and this time, after ducking the first kick, he managed to slip in and catch her leg. The Man of Steel then swept the standing leg out from under her causing her to fall to the floor. He would have to knock her out while she was down- it was now or never.
“I’m sorry, Helena” he said whole-heartedly.
Superman started forward but was caught by surprise as Black Canary pounced onto his massive back. He had been so preoccupied during the fight with Huntress that he hadn’t noticed Canary move into position behind him. No not her too, he thought.
The blonde vixen quickly looped an arm around his throat before wrapping her long, fishnet clad legs over his arms and pulling them back. She had Superman in a sort of half nelson hold, except she was using her strong, powerful legs instead. He could feel her sinewy thigh muscles flexing against his biceps while he fought to break free.
Huntress was already to her feet before Superman realized what had happened. With his muscular arms trapped, it left the rest of his body completely wide open. With a sly grin Huntress unleashed several precise kicks to the Man of Steel’s stomach and ribs. Each blow was more brutal than the last- all hit on target. She finished with a hard jumping front kick, nailing the world famous ‘S’ on his chest with a dull thud. Black Canary released her hold and allowed Superman to fall heavily to the floor.
“It is over, Kal-El,” boasted Brainiac.
The android had not moved an inch since the fight began. “I have won and you have lost. Now, my lovely drones, I will leave it to you to utterly humiliate him as you see fit. Make sure his suffering lasts a long period of time. You will never escape from this arctic prison of your own design, Kal-El. Take comfort in the fact that as you are slowly worn down, I will be taking over this planet.”
“Farewell, Last Son of Krypton,” Brainiac said as he turned and walked out of sight.
