He’s Waiting To Make Up
Inspired by the song ‘Heart Attack in a Lay By’ by Porcupine Tree.
I wanted to write this, because of all of the Batman/Flash fanfics I ever read, Batman remains aloof, even in the relationship, knowing key details about Wally, but never revealing anything of his own. This is a death fic.
R
Bruce Wayne/ Wallace West, Batman/Flash
Wally reflects on his relationship with Bruce and the Batman. Some realizations come too late. Slash (implied). Death fic (twice).
I. He Waits For Me
“I guess I'm just burnt out/ I really should slow down/ I'm perfectly fine but /I just need to lie down” Heart Attack in a Lay By- Porcupine Tree
Wallace West was not a great man. His fortune was small and he had squandered most of it being a fool. He had stopped and managed to save it. But he was still a fool. A fool to ever think money could buy him the happiness he desired… to ever think that a stroke of luck would make him better than he was. He walked down the street and it was raining. The smell of lightning tinted the air and Wally pulled his jacket tightly around him. His mind wandered to Bruce.
He wondered if Bruce was at home waiting for him. Or maybe he was out patrolling. Or maybe at the Watchtower. Wherever he was, he wasn’t out looking for Wally… or the Flash. He sighed and rubbed his eyes, trying to blame the wetness on the rain. He knew that wasn’t it. He let out a shuddering breath as he felt his chest catch some. God, he was hurting tonight.
It was nothing physical, but the emotional torrents he went through trying to discern whether he was with the Batman or Bruce Wayne was a job which could use a lot of hazard pay. Even in his own mind, the joke fell flat. He wiped his eyes again and continued to walk. He should have headed back towards Wayne Manor, but he couldn’t face Bruce… or the Batman. The yelling match hadn’t been the first, though it had been the first one that directly affected their duties. So he had thrown a tantrum and left, with the Batman saying the JLA didn’t need him really, anyways. It stung, and yet he was still in love. He shook with energy… or maybe he was cold… or crying. He pulled the jacket tighter and listened to the sound of cars driving past.
Bruce would be waiting for him… when he went home. Because Bruce always waited for him. Even if he had fought with the Batman. Because they were separate. Because Batman held himself aloof when they were in costume, and acted so different when they were not. His hands were shaking uncontrollably. So, why couldn’t he go home?
Another car rolled past and Wally wished that it was Bruce coming to look for him. But why would he? They had never let their fights at work come between them in their personal life. But… Wally was having a hard time accepting that. He turned down in to an ally, a short cut back to his old place. He sat down in the darkness. He needed to rest, he felt so tired all of a sudden.
He understood when they told him he was child-like. He understood that he was the only one who could break the tension within the team. And he couldn’t even get rid of the tension between himself and his lover. He closed his eyes, wiped his eyes again, and tried to prevent the tears with no success. It wasn’t a time to be running, he needed to think. He watched as head lights made interesting shadows on the walls of the ally. He put his head in his hands.
Why didn’t Batman understand that Wally and Flash were the same person? Eventually, the cutting remarks on the job were going to drive him away. Depression had never been a word in Wally’s dictionary until recently. He felt it more and more lately. Taking more assignments away from Batman than with him. Not like before.
John had even asked him about it, wondering if maybe something had happened. But Wally brushed off his inquiries and laughed it off. He could laugh everything off it seemed. He put his head in his hands and started to cry without remorse. He wondered if all of his pain would subside if he cried it out. Home was waiting, but he couldn’t get up to go there. He needed this. But he was just Wally, scared and vulnerable, and maybe a little lost.
Does he miss me? He wondered as he cried. He wondered if he ever did. Wondered if he even thought of him when he wasn’t around. It didn’t seem like it very much. He wiped his eyes again as the tears seemed to subside. He felt a little better, though his stomach was clenched and his chest hurt just a little. He stood, pushing himself up on the wall. He decided it didn’t matter what Batman had said earlier, Wally needed Bruce... more than anything.
Before he could even think about moving, he had been surrounded. Several large men wielding chains and guns. His flight instinct kicked in, knowing he was not much of a fighter. But by the time he even found an opening to dash through, one of his assailants had grabbed his arms. He struggled against them with little success.
“Looks like we got a fighter.” The guy who looked like he might be the ringleader said. Wally fought back tears and wondered how often people got messed up like this. How many times they didn’t prevent it? Bruce had warned him not to go out in the streets of Gotham by himself. He let out a shuddering breath and started to struggle again, hoping that if he could just get one little break, he could get out of there fine. Another man was digging in his pocket for his wallet. Wally wasn’t a fighter but…
Wally slammed his head back, connecting with one of his assailants noses. The man gasped in surprise and immediately clutched his nose, letting Wally go. Wally tried to bolt, but the other guy still had him, plus the guy had his hand in his pocket. He struggled more and brought his free hand around to connect with the other guys head, causing him to also let go. Wally was breathing heavily now, trying to find an escape, but the mouth of the ally was blocked. He turned and bolted the other way, surely he could climb the fence in the back before he was caught. He was stopped up short though. A building had been squished in that blocked off the other exit. Wally suddenly felt sick. Hopefully, he could run past them the other way.
He ran forward, not paying too much attention, and he tripped on some boxes that had been knocked over during his hasty escape attempt. Before he could stand there was a heavy foot on his back, holding him down. He heard the familiar sound of a gun cock. Wally closed his eyes and tried praying. Once again, his clumsiness had forced him in to a dangerous situation.
“Batman…” He muttered. The man laughed.
“Batman ain’t here, kid.” He said. The other men finished fishing his wallet out of his pants pocket. They took the money, around a hundred dollars, from his wallet and dropped the empty wallet in the ground. The ring leader then discharged the gun, the shot hitting Wally in the back.
Wally felt a horrible pain shoot through him and his face screwed up in pain. He struggled to sit up… to find a hospital. He was bleeding profusely though and could barely stand. All he could think about was Bruce and Batman. He wished they hadn’t fought last. Wish he had told Bruce he loved him. Told Batman he loved him too. Tears were falling again, his fingers twitched piteously as he once again tried to stand up.
He curled in to the fetal position, trying not to writhe in pain. Hoping someone would save him soon. His eyes were drooping. He felt very tired. His fingers were still twitching. He wished he could stand up. He wished he could reach his cell phone. If he could call Bruce then… he could barely move his arms. He felt so heavy… so tired. His eyes closed. His breathing was slowing down. The blood around him was diluted with the rain, becoming cold fairly quickly. He was shaking again… this time he knew it was from the cold.
He wished he could leave a message for Bruce… wished he could say goodbye.

Bruce was waiting for Wally. They had fought, but he had intended to apologize. The remarks he had made were completely out of line—no matter where they were. Alfred had brought him some tea before Superman contacted him.
“Batman… there’s some trouble over in your section of the city. Looks like some thugs are trying to rob a kid in an alley.” He said. Batman nodded and went to change and go over there, knowing that coordinates were already programmed for him. The car ride was quick, but there was absolutely no sign of the gangsters by the time he arrived. He called Superman again, seeing if the Man of Steel knew which way they had went. Superman told him that he’d work on it and that Batman should tend to the man that they had attacked.
Batman stepped in to the alley, it was dark, but his eyes focused quickly. He saw the man curled in the fetal position, blood pooled around him. He immediately went to the young man’s side. He turned the man to where he could ascertain if he was in need of medical assistance. The man’s heart beat was extremely faint. He scooped the young man up. He gasped in surprise.
“Wally…!” He said, the man was weak… his heart beat too shallow. His breathing was even worse. “I have to get you to the hospital.” He said, carrying the other man towards the Batmobile.
“Bruce…” He heard the name faintly on the young man’s lips.
“Don’t speak.” He said, softly as he put Wally in the car. He jumped in, going as fast as he could to get to Gotham City Hospital.
“Love you…” He said, voice still faint. “… sorry.” His eyes were shut now, his breath coming out raggedly, the shaking hadn’t stopped and his body slumped, unmoving. Batman stopped the car and stared.
His Wally was gone. Again, criminals had killed his loved ones. He fought back tears and pulled the still form of Wally in to his arms.
“Wally, no!” He said, petting the younger man’s wet hair. “Why?” He demanded, starting to shake. He was crying, he barely noticed. Superman called him back… he ignored him.

“I can’t even look at him.” Batman said, disgustedly. He had gotten increasingly worse since that infamous day. Wonder Woman licked her lips and patted Batman on the shoulder.
“You have to move on, Batman.” She said, her voice soft. The familiar red and yellow suit. Batman felt his heart clench as he looked at him. Barry Allen, they had called him. He pushed aside his personal feelings and decided to welcome him to the team.

“I miss him.” Bruce confided to Alfred. Alfred looked at his master sadly. Of course he did. He sighed and stood up. He needed to get in touch with Nightwing. He called his old ward to his manor, and offered him the mantle of Batman. Explained to him why he couldn’t do it anymore. And that Nightwing could now pass on to Tim… and that he could choose a new Robin.

He stood in front of their tree. The place where they had first kissed after Wally had dragged him off of the Watchtower to go sightseeing. He was glad now, that their memories had been made. He wiped his eyes… he was crying again. He had transferred all of the company over to Dick… now that he couldn’t manage. But Dick could do it, he was a smart kid—a good kid. He sat down beneath the tree.
He hoped, for the love of everything that was sacred, that the man had not lied about this poison. Especially not with what he paid for it. He started to feel sleepy more than anything. He was sure he saw Wally smiling at him again.
