Chapter One: Pardon Me But Don't I Know Me?
She had drawn the short straw and lost the chance to stay home. Grocery shopping was not in Sabrina's list of favorite things to do. In fact it was way, way down at the bottom. Although now as she thought about it, it really wasn't fair to have Amy come out here in her condition anyway. Sigh, she always seemed to be on the losing end of the stick.
The store was packed for a Saturday evening and she wanted desperately to get this over in a hurry. Although from the looks of things it wouldn't be tonight. She looked at the long list of things that Amy had written down and knew that this was not going to be quick. So she started down the aisles checking off the items she had pulled off the shelf. She wasn't really paying attention to what she was doing and smashed head on into another shopping cart.
She raised her eyes from the cart to apologize to the person whom she crashed into. When she did she froze, there in front of her stood someone who looked identical to herself. The other skunk woman also stood there in amazement.
After standing there for what seemed eternity Sabrina was able to utter something. It wasn't much but it was something. "Sorry I crashed into you, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
"Ah, it's OK, nothing damaged. I can't believe how much we resemble each other." The other female skunk said.
"Yes, it is truly amazing, my name is Sabrina." She said as she put out her hand in greeting. "What's yours?"
"Oh my!" The other skunk said in reaction. "This is definitely too weird. That's my name as well." She shook Sabrina's hand and it felt as though she had reached into a mirror.
At this point Sabrina thought she had crossed over to the Twilight Zone and she was really meeting herself from another dimension or something. She was afraid to ask but she thought she had better to solve this mystery. "Do you live around here?" If she says yes, that strange music starts to play and Rod Sterling shows up, I'm outta here! Sabrina thought.
"No I'm just visiting here. My Aunt Sarah lives not too far from here."
Whew! Sabrina thought she wasn't sure what she was going to say if she said yes. "That's nice to hear, hope you are enjoying your stay. Would you have any free time after I get my shopping done to chat for a bit? I would love to know more about you. Since we seem to share so much in common."
"That sounds like an excellent idea, I too am curious. I guess it's a date. Is there is a coffee shop near by we can go to?"
"Yeah not too far from here."
"Guess I'll see you about then." The other Sabrina said with excitement.
"Good I'll see you in about an hour; I have quite the list and the line ups at the cashier's are long."
"OK, I'll see you then." The other Sabrina Skunk said as she passed Sabrina continuing onward with her shopping.
Sabrina thought this was an interesting way to start her evening. She watched the skunk go down the isle and thought, so that's what I look like from the rear. Boy I have to wear dresses more often. Her shopping took longer than she wanted and she bumped into the other Sabrina a couple of more times. Every time seemed a little strange in seeing her.
Finally she was finished and found the other Sabrina sitting on a chair near the exit of the store. Below at her feet were three very full bags of groceries. Sabrina had none for she put her's through as a car pickup order.
"Hi, looks like you got quite a bit." Said Sabrina to her twin.
"Yeah I think a bit too much, it's going to be really heavy and it's a fair distance to my Aunt's home. It's going to be a long walk." She then realized Sabrina didn't have any grocery bags.
She was about to ask but Sabrina answered her question. "Oh don't worry, I'll give you a lift, I have a car. Come on its not too far away."
The two skunks exited the store together with some moderate stares. Obviously it was quite the sight to see two almost identical people side by side. It wasn't long before they reached the car. Sabrina helped the other Sabrina put her groceries in the back seat. Then they both got in.
"You know I'm finding this extremely strange." Said Sabrina's twin.
"Me too, it's like looking in a mirror but not. You even sound the same as me."
"Yes, that too is a bit unnerving."
Sabrina started the motor and moved the car over to the carport to get the groceries. The attendant did a double take when he saw the two of them sitting together in the front seats. They left the grocery store and found that coffee shop that was nearby. They got a few stares when they entered but they found a booth away from most of the people. They ordered a couple of large coffees and finally sat and began to talk.
"I guess I'll go first since I'm in your territory." Said the other Sabrina. "My full name is Sabrina Anne Johnston, I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I live with my mother, sister, and brother who we recently adopted. I'm here visiting an aunt on my Father's side. I've only been here a few days and I will be here for another 3 weeks." She said with a smile. "I graduated from art school with a small degree and I work for a small advertising firm. It's not much but it pays my rent and allows me some luxuries. I have no car and have sort of a boyfriend. His name is Max, he is a Black Rabbit, a real nice fellow who I love to tease. Other than that I'm as plain as they come. Then I ran into you, to my surprise, tonight.
Sabrina smiled at her double; it was really like looking into a mirror except for one big difference that she had missed up until now. She couldn't believe she had missed such an obvious difference.
"You're not wearing glasses!" She exclaimed. "Did you ever have to wear them? We are so alike that it surprised me not to notice you didn't have a pair on."
"Funny you should ask, I did up until last year. I went and had the laser surgery on my eyes and poof no more glasses for me. Now they told me as I grow older I will need them again but for now I don't."
"I should look into that. Did it hurt?"
"Nope just some burning in the eyes the next day but they give you special drops for it. After, they give you patches for your eyes to use at night to stop you from rubbing them. After a week of that, you don't have to do that anymore and you are healed. So how about you, what's your life like?" asked Sabrina Johnston.
Sabrina thought her life and her double's really mirrored each other. "Not much different from yours, I live with a girl friend of mine who is pregnant. Her fiancée moved in with us to share the rent and to keep her company. So far it's worked out well, I save a bundle on rent with those two there. I also have a boy friend, he's a fox and a gentleman all the way. I work making web pages for a local business." No need to tell her it's a porn studio she thought.
"So you work with computers." Sabrina Johnston said with surprise. "Me, I try to stay away from them as much as possible; I believe they are more trouble than they are worth. I have an old one but I don't use it much, it's a great dust collector."
"That they are, even when you do use one." She laughed and a big smile came over the other Sabrina's face.
"Well you sound happy, I'm glad to hear things are going well for you. I never really thought I would ever see myself shopping though."
"Yes when I looked up I couldn't believe my eyes." Sabrina said.
"Me too." Sabrina Johnston looked at her watch, "Oh my! I've been gone a long time, my Aunt will be worried sick. Can you excuse me for a moment while I phone and tell her I'm OK."
"Sure, go ahead; I'm not going anywhere."
"Thanks."
She watched as the other Sabrina got up and walked away. She still really couldn't believe it. I have to get her to come out to the house and meet mom. She'll flip, she said quietly to herself. She waved her hand at the waitress to get her to bring the coffee around again. She had the girl fill both, she thought they would be here awhile longer. It wasn't long before Sabrina Johnston returned and sat down again.
"Everything OK?" Sabrina inquired.
"Yeah, she fell asleep and really didn't know I was gone. It was a good idea anyway, she could have woke up any time. So have you always lived here?"
"Yup this is my old home town, went to school not too far from here. Those were the best times of my life now that I look back. Oh before I forget, would you be free tomorrow, I would love my mom to meet you. It will freak her out."
"I'm sure it will, my mother would do the same."
They continued their conversation for what became hours. Drinking way too much coffee and being astounded again to find their sisters also had the same name. Seems that Tabitha was a very popular name. She dropped Sabrina Johnston off at her Aunt's place and exchanged phone numbers. Sabrina said her good-byes and gently pulled away. As she drove she hoped that her Mother was free tomorrow. Back at her home she began to unpack some of the parcels and take them up to the apartment; all the while hoping that Thomas was home to help her with the rest. She tried the door and it easily opened. Thank God she thought, trying to pick these up again would have been a Nightmare.
"Amy, Thomas, I'm home! She called out to what seemed to be an empty apartment. Amy's head poked out of the kitchen doorway. And she didn't look happy.
"Where the heck have you been? We were worried sick about you. Do you know how long you have been gone?"
Sabrina wasn't sure but for Amy to be this upset then it must have been way too long. "I'm sorry Amy but something fantastic came up, something you're never ever going to believe."
Amy's face lacked any emotion and was clearly saying, "This had better be good." "Alright what happened at the grocery store?" She said in a very low voice.
"It will have to wait I have more bags downstairs. Is Thomas about?"
"No, he's out looking for you!" She said slowly and low key. "Now you tell me where you have been, the groceries can wait." Amy said with a scowl. Oh oh Sabrina thought; she knew she was in the doghouse now. "What you have to say better be good." Amy said showing her disapproval.
"Well I met a young woman in the grocery store who happens to look exactly like me. And I mean exactly like me. Except for the glasses, she doesn't wear any."
"That's it! You met some stranger and took off! Sabrina it's been 5 hours since you left here!" Amy was definitely not amused.
"Well we had a lot to talk about, if you met your double you would have stopped to talk with her."
"Yes I would and I would have called home to say I was going to be late."
"OK OK so I didn't call. I'm sorry not much can be done about it anyway. I'm here, end of story." Sabrina wanted this over, now. Not too much could come from this argument anyway. She was in the wrong but now she had to let Amy calm down. "I have to get the rest of the groceries out of my car." She turned away and knew that Amy wasn't going to let this go.
She finished up getting the parcels out of the car and locked it up for the night.
"There you are!" A familiar voice called. It was Thomas Amy's fiancé arriving home.
"Oh, hi Thomas." She said in greeting.
"Sabrina where have you been? Amy's been worried sick about you."
"Yeah I know, we had this conversation before." She said sarcastically.
"OK, that's good at least she knows you're OK. Here let me carry those." He reached out and took the two remaining bags of groceries from her.
"Thanks, you're never gonna believe who I met at the store." She said with excitement.
"Must have been someone really special for you to be gone this long."
"Well you're going to find this hard to believe but I met a woman who looks exactly like me."
"You're right I don't believe you. You mean as in twin."
"Yup and it gets weirder from there. Get this, her name is Sabrina Johnston."
"Now you are really pulling my leg. She looks like you and her name is Sabrina as well." He gave her this strange look.
"I know! I couldn't believe it myself when she told me but it's absolutely true." They had reached the apartment door and went inside. Amy was there waiting, she was relieved to see Thomas.
"Found her." He said with a smile, but got nothing back in return.
"Well are you telling him this fantasy story of yours?" Amy said in a harsh tone. She hadn't believed a word Sabrina had said about this double she had met.
"Yes and it is true." Sabrina said with a firm tone.
"Sabrina it's the biggest crock of you know what and you know it.
"Now why won't you tell us where you went?"
"I'm not going to argue with you Amy, it's late and I'm going to bed." She walked past Amy heading for her bedroom knowing that Amy was going to have to eat a lot of crow tomorrow.
#########
Sabrina got up early and got herself some breakfast. After that she got on the phone and tried the number that the other Sabrina had given her. A familiar voice answered.
"Hello." Said a female voice.
"Hi Sabrina."
"Oh, it's you Sabrina. I hope you slept well."
"Not really my roommate chewed me out last night. Any chance of you being able to leave now, instead of later like we planned." She crossed her fingers.
"No, I don't see a problem, ah why so early? If I may ask?"
"I'm going to get my roommates really good and you're going to help. Amy always sleeps late on Sunday and Thomas, well he's a heavy sleeper. They won't even know I have left. I'll be there in a few minutes OK?"
"OK I'll wait outside for you, no need to disturb my Aunt this early in the morning."
"OK bye." She hung up the phone and was off. It didn't take her long to get her twin and bring her back to the apartment. Sabrina entered first and found that the coast was clear, then the two sneaked into Sabrina's room.
"OK here's my plan, you're going to pretend to be me. Just for a little while, then I will make my grand entrance."
Sabrina Johnston looked at Sabrina with a grin. "That sounds interesting but why am I pretending to be you though?"
"They didn't believe my story and thought I was making the whole thing up."
"Oh I see; OK, sounds good. So what are their names again?"
The stage was set and they waited in Sabrina's room for sounds of life. They looked at photos and talked. It wasn't long before they heard the bathroom toilet flush.
"OK that's your cue." Sabrina had given her twin her nightshirt to help with the illusion. Also messing up her hair, to look like she had just got up. Everything was set and Sabrina Johnston headed for the kitchen. She opened the fridge and took out the milk and put it on the table. As well as finding bowls for the others. She looked where Sabrina had said they kept the cereal and got several brands out. One happened to be her favorite, Bran Flakes. She loved the taste of them. She had no way of knowing they were Thomas'. It wasn't long before Amy came into the kitchen.
"Morning Sabrina." A pregnant Amy said as she sat down, looking very tired. "Oh what a night, the baby kept me up. Plus I feel horrible about the way I treated you last night. I'm so sorry Sabrina."
Sabrina Johnston began to panic a little. This was more difficult than she thought. For one thing she didn't even know this person and now she was apologizing for something that never happened to her.
"It's OK Amy I understand I was out too late, it's my fault." Sabrina had told her that she did feel bad that she didn't call but with all the excitement she forgot exactly how long she had been away.
"Thanks." She sighed and grabbed one of the boxes of cereal and noticed what Sabrina was eating. "Since when do you like Bran Flakes?"
She had her mouth full when the question was asked and had to swallow quickly to get a response out. "Ah, ah, I thought I would try them, just to see how they taste, ah ... pretty good." She smiled taking another mouth full.
Amy shook her head and poured some cereal into a bowl for herself. The next voice they heard was that of Thomas.
"Good morning ladies," He bent down and gave Amy a kiss on the cheek. "How's everything this morning?"
"Sabrina is being adventuresome by trying your Bran Flakes."
"Really! That's different."
"Uhm ... really good!" Sabrina said as she took another mouthful. These people had accepted her as Sabrina, the plan had worked. She only hoped they didn't have a heart attack when their Sabrina finally came in. She finished up her cereal and took the bowl to the sink. She promptly washed it as well as some others that were there. Behind her back Thomas gave Amy a nudge with his elbow to get her attention.
Amy watched as Sabrina finished up cleaning the dishes which for her was a rarity. Mostly she left the bowl and the milk out for someone else to pick up. "Maybe she feels guilty at staying out so late." She said to Thomas who just shrugged. Oh well the change was welcome Amy thought. Then Sabrina came into the kitchen.
"Good morning everyone." She said in a happy tone.
Thomas blew cereal out of his mouth and nose. Poor Amy Gasped for air. They were definitely surprised.
"Thomas I'm seeing double!" Amy cried out.
"Me too!" He said cleaning off his mouth, nose and the surrounding area.
"Surprised you!" Sabrina said. "Everyone this is Sabrina Johnston, my twin I told you about."
Amy and Thomas were both speechless; really they couldn't believe what they were seeing in front of them. Two Sabrina's in the same house, it was unthinkable.
"Hi, nice to meet you officially." Sabrina Johnston put out her hand in greeting.
"Sabrina it looks like I owe you one hell of an apology. I'm sorry I doubted you. Oh boy this is incredible." Amy just sat back and stared at Sabrina in Stereo.
The two Sabrina's took seats at the table and soon a good conversation began to brew. It became very entertaining very quickly. It broke up after about an hour of pure talking and finding out all about this new addition to the family so to speak. "I'm going to call my mom and see if she is home, I'm sure she will freak when she sees you."
"Sabrina your mother, she's not prone to heart attacks? This may be one heck of a shock to her system." Sabrina Johnston said.
"No, she'll be OK after the initial shock has worn off." She picked up the receiver and dialed her mother's number. It took a minute but the phone was finally answered.
"Hello." Said Sabrina's mother."
"Hi mom."
"Sabrina Dear, it's nice to hear from you. It's really early for you to be calling, is everything OK?"
"Everything is fine mom but I was wondering, could I bring a friend over to meet you this morning. It's kinda important to me." "Oh sure honey anytime, I'll be here."
"OK mom we'll be over in about an hour. See you then." She hung up the phone and returned to the table. "Everything is a go; we'll get dressed and head off."
The two Sabrina's headed back to Sabrina's room leaving Amy and Thomas alone in the kitchen. "I really thought she was making it up." Amy said.
"Well it did sound like a far out story. Well if she ever cries wolf then you better come running."
"You bet I will!" She said with a gleam in her eyes.
Thomas laughed at what he had just said.
It didn't take long for the two Sabrina's to get dressed and head off towards her mother's place. At the door she told the other Sabrina to stand back out of view. She didn't want her surprise to be ruined as she opened the door.
"Hi Mom, I'm here." She called into the house. Soon a slightly heavier and some what older skunk came to greet her.
"Hello dear, where's your friend? You did say you were bringing one."
"Yup and here she is." That was Sabrina's cue to come in.
Sabrina Johnston stepped into the house.
"Oh my!" Said Sabrina's Mother.
"Mom this is Sabrina Johnston, I met her at the grocery store."
"It's very nice to meet you Mrs. Mustelidae." She put out her hand in greeting and Sabrina's mother returned it.
"Likewise, please, please come in; the living room is this way." She showed them to the living room. "I'm sorry but I have a bit of business to do for a few moments if you'll excuse me."
"Certainly." Said Sabrina Johnston.
As they sat in the living room Sabrina Johnston said. "Your Mom seems very nice and we certainly did surprised her."
"Yeah we did." Sabrina grinned, it wasn't often that she was able to get one up on her mother. Sabrina took time to show her twin some of her mom's photographs. Hoping her mother wouldn't be too long. It turned out that she was gone for quite a long time and when she finally appeared she seemed very nervous.
"Mom is everything OK?" Sabrina asked concerned.
"Well it is and it isn't. I have something to tell you. Something that concerns you both." She sat down and motioned for Sabrina to get comfortable.
"Mom how can this concern both of us, you don't even know Sabrina Johnston."
"Well that's where you have made a mistake Sabrina dear. I do know about Sabrina and her mother Margrette."
"That is my mother's name. How do you know it?" Said Sabrina Johnston.
"Well I was just on the phone with your mother and we have determined that it is time you know the truth."
"Truth?" Sabrina said. "Mom what's going on here?"
Endora sighed knowing that this wasn't going to be easy to say. "You two are identical twin sisters."
"What!" They said in unison.
"You two are twin sisters, however, born of different mothers."
Both of them sat stunned until Sabrina spoke. "Mom you kept this a secret from me!?" Sabrina exclaimed.
