Secrets, silent, stony sit in the dark palaces of both our hearts: secrets weary of their tyranny: tyrants willing to be dethroned. James Joyce
I’ll meet you at midnight. The email said. I’d replied with a place I knew I could stay hidden, an abandoned warehouse in the docks.
I got there an hour or so early. I wanted to make sure that if the mayor turned up early, he wouldn’t be able to stop me getting inside. Climbing up onto the railing on the second floor, I jumped up towards a nearby metal beam.
I grabbed the edge, swinging my legs up, so I could pull myself onto it. From there, it was easy to crawl along it to the wall. Carefully standing, I reached over to a skylight and wound it open. There was enough space for me to get out that way if I needed to. I slowly sat back down, my foot slipping at the last second. I caught the edge of the bar, taking a deep breath as I rebalanced.
As the time grew closer to midnight, as sense of anxiety began to set on me. It wasn’t about what I was doing, it was like I could feel something bad about to happen. I shook it off, trying to get my mind back to a place of calm.
The sound of one of the doors sliding open caught my attention, and I looked down to see Hill walking in. He looked around at the dim building, and I was fairly sure he wouldn’t be able to see me up in the shadows.
“I’m here.” He called out. “What will it take to make this go away?”
I quietly slid across the beam so I could see him better. “You’ve been misbehaving, Mayor Hill. Do you know how easy it was to get those pictures? I’d be surprised if your wife doesn’t already know.”
“What do you want?” He shouted, still looking around for me. “Is it money?”
“What do I want?” I asked. “I searched through a lot of your financial records. You’ve been funnelling money out of a lot of charities and into your accounts. You’ve sent charities bankrupt with your greed, destroying reputations of the people trying to help. I want you to give the money back to the people, and admit what you did.”
“That would destroy my career!”
I laughed. “Well that is part of the point. But it would only destroy your career, since I’m guessing your wife is probably just as guilty of that as you are. If I were to release the pictures I have, you would lose everything.”
He turned on a torch, beginning to search for me. As I slid back across the beam to stay out of the light, there was a bang and smoke began to fill the warehouse. A dark shape smashed through one of the skylights and landed on a beam.
Realising that the figure was this bat vigilante, I quickly leapt over to the skylight I’d opened and climbed out. I ran along the roof to the edge, trying not to panic when I heard him following me.
I could see a fire escape on the next building over, and I sprinted, jumping across the gap. As the air rushed by me, I was concerned that I wouldn’t make it. But then my hands caught the edge, and I dropped to the ground in a roll.
He was still behind me, even as I took off in a full sprint, and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get away. My legs were beginning to burn, and I could feel myself slowing down.
So I took a risk, running along the dock and diving into the Gotham River.
Swimming as deep as I could, I made my way under the dock then slowly returned to the surface. I could see him standing right on the edge, looking around. Holding my breath, I waited until he turned and left. Then I waited even longer, until I was sure he was gone.
When I was absolutely sure he was gone, I grabbed the edge of the dock and pulled myself up. Tired and wet, I wandered back to my car, staying cautious in case Hill was still around.
By the time I got back to the safe house, taking a lot of side roads on the off chance I was still being followed, I was mostly damp, and completely exhausted. I climbed the stairs to my office, pulling my phone out of my pocket. It wasn’t turning on, and I honestly didn’t expect it to. I sighed, flopping down on the mattress.
In retrospect, it was stupid to try this in a city being protected by someone like Batman. But I was in deep now, and I had to take this all the way.
With my body aching, and my clothes almost dry, I fell asleep.
It was raining, the kind of heavy rain that makes you feel depressed. I wasn’t planning on going out in it, but then I looked out the window and saw Bruce standing at his parents’ graves. It was the day before the five year anniversary of their murder, and I guess he was already hurting about it.
“Mum, I’m going out!” I called, grabbing my umbrella and heading towards the front door.
“Alright, sweetie. Remember we’re going out for dinner, so be back before seven!” She leaned over the railing from the second floor.
I waved goodbye to her. “I will!”
Opening the umbrella, I walked to the gate on the fence the bordered our two houses. I pushed it open, then headed over to Bruce.
“You’re going to catch a cold if you stay out in the rain.” I touched his arm. “Come inside and warm up.”
He shook his head, taking hold of my hand. “I feel like I failed them. I should have done something that night.”
“You were twelve!” I wrapped my arms around him tightly. “What could you have done that wouldn’t have ended with you being killed too?”
“I don’t know! But I should have done something!” He squeezed me so hard, and I felt his body shake as he began to cry.
I stood there holding him, comforting him as he cried. “I know this is hard for you. Tell me what you need me to do.”
“Just stay with me.”
“I will.” I gently rubbed his back. “I will always be here for you.”
As soon as the shops opened in the morning, I headed out to get a replacement phone. I changed the SIM card over, and turned it on. The screen came to life, and I breathed a sigh of relief.
However badly I felt about how the previous night went, I was feeling a lot better now that I had a working phone again. But now I knew that I needed to be better prepared. I’d screwed up, putting myself on Batman’s radar earlier than I expected.
I called Charlotte as I slid into the driver’s seat of my car.
“Good morning, Miss Eva. What can I do for you?” She asked.
“I just wanted to check in and see how the house is going.”
“I was actually just about to call you. The bottom floor of the east wing is finished. The workers are now moving to the second and third floors. The gym space is complete if you would like to use it.”
I leaned my head back against the rest. “Thank you for sorting all this out. I’ll come by soon.”
Hanging up, I headed home to get changed, then over to the manor. I walked inside, past the workers, then into the gym. It was exactly what I wanted, with all the equipment I’d had back in England.
“I know we discussed all the details, but is this how you wanted the room?” Charlotte came up beside me.
“It’s perfect.” I hugged her. “I can’t thank you enough.”
“I’ll leave you be now. If you want a snack later, come let me know.” She softly squeezed my arm, then left the room.
I dropped my bag to the side, stretching my arms over my head. Putting my headphones on, I climbed onto the stationary bike. If I was going to finish working the mayor over, I needed to make sure my body was at its peak. I closed my eyes as I rode, just letting the burn of the workout set in.
After about thirty minutes, my phone began to ring, and I slowed down so I could talk when I saw that it was Bruce.
“Hey, Bruce. What’s up?” I asked.
“It’s going to be a beautiful day tomorrow, and I was wondering if you’d like to go for a walk up the hill behind the manor with me. You know the walk we used to do?”
I didn’t even hesitate. “I’d love to. What time, and where should I meet you?”
“Mine, at around nine?”
“I’ll be there.” I didn’t hang up yet, just paused for a moment. “It’s nice to hear your voice. I know it’s only been a couple of days, but I miss you.”
“I miss you too. Things should be settling down here soon and hopefully I’ll be free to spend more time with you. I have to go now, but I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Hanging up, I felt a burst of happy energy rush through me. I could tell tomorrow was going to be a good day, and that made me feel better now.
I climbed off the bike, wrapping up my hands and moving to the punching bag. There was nothing like the promise of a fun date to revitalise yourself.
