Dinah rubbed Rachel's shoulders gently, letting the girl rest for a bit with her head laying on the blonde woman's lap. The poor girl relayed everything that had happened: Freddie was ready to go for second base on her, and had even convinced her to let him. However, as soon as he saw that she had a penis, he freaked out, grabbed his things, called her a few words that neither of them should even know, and tore out of there. Deep down inside, Dinah wanted very much to go out to the garage, get back on her motorcycle, hunt down Freddie, and make him feel as humiliated and ashamed of himself as he had made Rachel feel.
Just as Dinah felt as though her night would be free of such wanton acts of violence, though, she heard a beeping in her pocket. She pulled out the BoP distress beacon, which was blinking red and violet, meaning Batwoman and Huntress were both in trouble. Rachel looked up to see it, her eyes widening as she knew that anything capable of putting both of those two in distress was likely big and bad. Exchanging a quick, understanding look, Dinah gave Rach a quick nod before placing a finger to her ear.
"Oracle, come in," Black Canary said as the mic came on. "What's happening at the harbour?"
"Looks like Hel and Kate bit off more than they could chew!" Oracle exclaimed, clearly hitting keys on a keyboard pretty hard and fast. "Clayface is on the boat, and he looks bigger and uglier than ever!"
Dinah's eyes widened, realising the severity of the situation. However, before she could say anything, Rachel, who had overheard everything, sat up and quickly stated, "We'll be right there!"
Canary's jaw dropped slightly, taking her finger off the mic as Rachel got up off the bed. "Wait, Rach, are you sure you can keep focused? 'Cuz I could take this one if you aren't-"
"I can mope over Freddie some other time!" Raven declared, pulling her familiar around herself to change into her costume. "Our friends are in serious trouble and need our help! That's way more important than my homophobic boyfriend!"
"I think the correct term for this is..." Dinah started to say, only to hesitate for a moment. "...Actually, I don't think there is a scientific term for-"
"Whatever, I'll deal with it later," Raven insisted, looking Dinah in the eye. "Batwoman and Huntress are more important."
Black Canary thought it over for a second before nodding, grinning a little. "Alright then, let's go."
Huntress groaned as she pulled herself up and out of the mud-like substance. Just as she felt like asking why she was always the one to get slimed, she saw a gigantic sledgehammer of sludge rise up over her. She dodged just as it slammed through the deck where she'd been standing, managing to scoop up her crossbow along the way. Looking across the deck of the ship, she saw Batwoman getting the captain to safety before she faced Clayface again.
"Karlo!" the Dark Knightess yelled. "What's your angle in all of this?"
"My angle?" Clayface repeated incredulously. "My angle is that these chemicals react to my clay in pretty interesting ways! It helps me solidify my form more, and even pull tricks like I did with that briefcase! All I had to do was pose as some powerful mob boss in Gotham and give the order to have the chemicals taken outta the Bat's sight and brought here!"
"And lemme guess," Huntress suggested with a smirk, "you would've gotten away with it if it hadn't been for us snooping superheroes, right?"
Clayface growled, his head twisting around to face Hel. "Something like that, yeah!"
Suddenly, a mass of clay shot out from Clayface's back in the form of a gigantic scythe. Huntress just managed to leap over it, but it instead sliced through the mast, which fell toward the violet archer. Before it could hit her, though, it was caught in black energy and tossed aside, Raven and Black Canary dropping next to her. Canary smirked at her old friend/rival, hand on her hip.
"Needing us to save your ass?" Dinah asked. "Must be EVERYday."
Huntress stuck out her tongue before facing Raven. "Rach, we gotta keep those barrels under the tarp away from him."
"Got it," Raven replied, spotting said barrels. "Azarath, Metrion, Zinthos!"
With those words, the tarp was coated in black energy. It was then wrapped around the barrels and levitated up and away from Clayface. The muddy monstrosity of a man growled at her as she did so.
"HEY!" Karlo yelled. "HANDS OFF, BITCH!"
Clayface suddenly rolled himself into a ball of muddy-looking clay, bowling himself toward the three. Letting the barrels down on the docks, Raven and the others jumped away, just managing to avoid being flattened. They quickly regrouped with Batwoman, Black Canary drawing her sansetsukon and Huntress looking through her belt for different trick arrowheads to use.
"Okay, anybody got any ideas on what'll stop him?" Canary asked the group, drawing the sickles on her weapon.
"Despite his form, he still has a set amount of stamina and vitality," Batwoman instructed as Clayface started to reform. "A strong enough shock, a big enough blast, he'll eventually go down."
"Got'cha," Huntress said, loading her crossbow. "Let's sculpt him a butt kicking!"
With that, the four immediately spread out and charged Clayface from different angles. Karlo sent out spark clay spikes at them, which they either dodged or cut through. Black Canary reached him first, slashing into him, only for Clayface to grab hold of her sansetsukon and fling away, Dinah barely keeping herself from going overboard by sticking the sickles into the ship. Batwoman was next, hurling a concussive-blast Batarang into Karlo's face, blowing him apart. However, Clayface was able to reform quickly, gathering around the Dark Knightess and trying to smother her. This was stopped by Huntress, who fired an arrow into his body that released an instant cooling agent, freezing him just enough to let Kate smash her way free. As Clayface began to reform, though, he soon found a giant crate dropped down on him by Raven.
"Think that got him?" Black Canary asked as she got back to her feet, only for Clayface to bust through the remains of the crate. "Nevermind!"
"Got anymore ice arrows?" Batwoman suggested to Huntress as Clayface swung giant clay sledges and scythes at Dinah and Rachel.
"Not enough to freeze him completely," Hel replied, pulling out a single arrowhead. "Unless...Say, how cold do you figure the water is tonight?"
"Almost midnight at this time of year?" the Dark Knightess inquired before getting the idea, a small smirk forming. "You ARE bad."
As the two worked out their plan, Canary and Raven continued to keep Clayface occupied. Dinah barely managed to avoid a downward slash from a scythe, only to get flung up by a massive clay fist. Stopping her momentum by dragging the sickles on her sansetsukon across a large cargo container, she took a breather as Rachel went on the offensive, slinging crates at Clayface with her telekinesis.
"You think you and your friends can pass judgement on me?" Karlo demanded, slamming the crates apart and catching Raven in a giant clay hand. "What other choice do I have besides being a criminal? Be one of you? Like anyone would look to me as a hero! I'm a freak of nature!"
At these words, Rachel's eyes went from glowing white to black as Clayface tried to smother her, the others running to help. "You think being different is an excuse? Guess what, I'M A MOTHER FUCKING DEMON!!!"
Suddenly, Clayface's hands were broken apart by Raven's familiar, Rachel floating in mid-air with the familiar behind her. Her skin was much redder, and her hands were surrounded by dark purple flames. She stared a hole through Karlo, who was gathering himself up again.
"You think appearances mean anything?" Raven demanded. "That your form lets you get away with being evil? Being different excuses your actions?"
Clayface didn't answer, instead gathering a giant scythe to swing at Raven, who merely clenched her fists as the flames around them turned black. "Feel the pain of everyone you hurt in the face of that lie! Azarath, Metrion, ZINTHOS!"
As Clayface's clay scythe came down toward Raven, the flames shot out and melted it apart, then scorched Karlo's body badly. As he backed away from that, a pair of giant steel containers slid across the deck, sandwiching Clayface between them hard as they compacted into each other. Rachel then touched back down onto the deck, her skin fading back to its original colour as she began to sweat a lot.
"Raven!" Batwoman yelled, running to her side. "We need to get him overboard! Can you?"
Rachel shook her head. "Hard to focus. Spent so much energy."
Thinking for a second, Batwoman hit upon an idea, firing a Remote Claw to one container and letting it shoot a line across to another. "Could you focus enough to hold that back for Canary?"
Figuring out what the Dark Knightess meant, Raven nodded. With this, Black Canary leaped up onto the line, Rachel pulling back on it hard as Clayface began to reform, shoving the containers aside. Behind him, the three spotted Huntress near the edge of the ship, readying her crossbow.
"Trajectory looks good!" Kate announced. "Let her fly!"
Raven nodded, releasing the line and collapsing in exhaustion. Black Canary was launched toward Clayface, who didn't have enough time to react as the blonde flipped over his head, slinging her sansetsukon across his clay neck. Dinah then let loose a Canary Cry for added momentum, flinging herself and Karlo across the deck and over the edge of the ship, Huntress firing the arrow into Clayface as they did. Pulling her weapon from Clayface's neck, Canary then dug it into the side of the ship, catching herself as Karlo fell into the bay, the arrow freezing the water around him. Within moments, a large iceberg containing Clayface bobbed up out of the water. Dinah sighed in relief and a rope was dropped down for her by Huntress, who grinned down at her.
"Only you guys would come up with a plan that required me to be tossed overboard," Black Canary joked, grabbing the rope.
"Are you alright?" Batwoman asked Raven as she helped her back up, Dinah getting back onboard. "Seemed like you were channelling some pretty harsh emotions back there."
Rachel gulped, looking from each of her friends to the next, before coming to a decision. "...Girls? I think I need your help with something important..."
Freddie sweated hard as he approached the door to Rachel and Dinah's apartment. It had been a couple of days since what had happened, and he felt it necessary to at least come over and apologise. Sure, his overall desire to date this girl had dropped slightly, but she was still a hottie in his eyes, and even if they couldn't work, that didn't mean that they couldn't still be friends. Taking a deep breath, he held his hand up to knock, only for the door to open slightly, still on its chain, Rachel standing on the other side. Her face looked very neutral, neither happy nor sad nor angry to see him.
"Hello, Freddie," Rachel said after a few moments of silence.
"H-Hey," Fred stammered. "Listen, I just wanted to come over and say how sorry I was-"
"For what, Freddie?" Rach asked, her face unchanging. "For running out the other night, or for calling me 'some kind of he-she circus freakshow'?"
Freddie gulped hard. "I-I'll admit, finding out you had...THAT kinda scared me a little bit, b-but we can work around it. Maybe just pretend it's not there, and you could just lay on your fro-"
"As appealing as that sounds, I think I'll pass, Fred," Rachel answered immediately.
"Hey, I'm trying to make an effort here, alright?" Fred exclaimed, getting a little angry. "Look, you're a young, lonely soul with not a lot of friends and some kinda birth defect. How many people do you think you'll see in your life?"
Rather than get angry at this obvious and highly scathing insult, Rachel simply opened the door a bit wider. Standing a few feet behind her were Dinah, a lean looking brunette, a red-head in a wheelchair, and most shocking to him, Katherine Kane, the billionaire bachelorette. The group just stared at him as he looked on dumbfounded. He looked back to Rachel, her face still neutral.
"Any other questions?" she asked, Freddie completely silent. "I thought not. Please don't ever come by here again, Freddie."
And with that, Rachel shut the door in Fred's face. After sensing him leave through her empathic powers, she turned back to her friends, Babs immediately letting loose a small snicker, which quickly evolved into a full-out laugh.
"Did you SEE the look on his face when he saw Kate?" she laughed. "I thought his jaw was gonna hit the floor!"
"A 'he-she circus freakshow'?" Helena asked incredulously. "God, what a pig!"
"AND a coward," Kate added. "I'm surprised he didn't leave a stain on the welcome mat."
"Yeah, and he thinks YOU'LL have trouble getting with people?" Dinah asked. "Based on what I've seen of him, me thinketh HIS is a bit smaller than YOURS."
At that comment, even Rachel couldn't help but giggle a little, before letting her familiar out to grab everyone in a hug. "Thanks for being here, you guys."
As the others all hugged her tightly, there was a knock at the door, inciting a groan from Hel. "Ugh, think it's Fred again?"
Rachel didn't even bother to check, opening the door and ready for round two. However, the figure on the other side of the door was NOT Freddie. Instead, it was an African-American girl, looking to be about Raven's age, with cool blue eyes under a white mask. She wore a white, blue, and yellow makeshift costume with a blue V sewn onto her shirt. The two stared at each other for a moment, eye to eye, before the girl cleared her throat and started talking.
"You're Raven, right?" she asked before looking past her to the others. "And it's Black Canary, Batwoman, Huntress, and I have no idea who the last one is."
"H-How do you-" Rachel started to ask, her friends gathering behind her, before the girl cut her off.
"Followed your emotional trail here," the girl answered, refocusing on Rach. "Name's Virtue...You're a lot cuter than I thought you'd be."
"...HUH?" Raven asked, her voice VERY high-pitched.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Okay, real quick for anybody who doesn't know, Virtue, AKA Holly Ann Fields, is a character from Gail Simone's The Movement. She's an Empath, capable of riding people's emotions and creating astral projections of herself along the trail of emotions the person leaves, which can turn intangible and fly. When she's riding emotions, or is channelling her own, her body changes colour to reflect one of the seven colours of the emotional spectrum (green for willpower, yellow for fear, blue for hope, etc.). She can also help ease people of certain negative emotions, and is able to tell with 100% accuracy if people are lying to her or not. She also knows basic self-defence, and is capable of tactical analyses. Is she a new member of the Birds? Well, you'll just have to wait and see. :)
Second, no, the subplot involving the stolen chemicals isn't COMPLETELY dropped. Not exactly, anyway. After all, there's a second part to that, as we'll explore in future chapters. However, that IS pretty much Clayface's entry and exit into this story, unless I think of a way to involve him again somehow.
Anyway, check in next time as we see what Virtue wants with Raven and the Birds of Prey. And for those that haven't read Pride and Virtue, which'll get pulled once it's posted here ('cuz why bother having it up twice?), this next chapter will have what you call came here to see: HARDCORE SEX! ROFL Ja né!
