The Emotional Spectrum
Chapter 9: Confrontations
~*~
Kyle Rayner had never been to the planet Korugar but even if he had this would still be the worst trip to it in his life. His heart weighed heavy as he neared the domicile of Soranik Natu, until recently the woman he had given his heart to. The two came together almost accidentally. The Star Sapphire known as Mari had sensed a connection between the two Green Lanterns and using the power of her ring showed the two their true loves.
Sora was shown that she was in love with Kyle Rayner, a fact that took her by surprise. She had always closely guarded her feelings for others but there was something about the Earthman that she later informed Kyle simply melted her heart. The two began a whirlwind romance that soon became a clandestine relationship when the Guardians of the Universe enacted the Third New Law in the Book of Oa forbidding relationships between Lanterns. After the Blackest Night came to pass the Third Law was revoked and Kyle and Sora were free to express their love for one another openly.
However Kyle had kept something secret from Sora. While Sora's true love was Kyle Rayner Kyle's true love was Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, the super heroine known as Jade. Jade had died during the previous crisis and Kyle, despite their relationship being over, was devastated but this. With Jade gone he allowed himself to pursue a relationship with Sora but he never stopped feeling guilty that his heart belonged to Jen. Life became even more difficult for Kyle when after the Blackest Night Jen was resurrected by the Entity of Life. Jennifer had raced to Kyle's arms upon seeing him and kissed him like the pair once did when they were deeply in love. It took all of Kyle's considerable will not to reciprocate her affection at that moment in time. He knew Sora was there and that her heart would break if he did that in front of everyone that was present.
Immediately after things settled down Jen was examined thoroughly by Sora to ensure Jen was not suffering any side effects from said resurrection. Jade had deduced that Sora was now Kyle's love interest and made a hasty retreat to deal with her own heart break upon learning this fact.
Now... now Kyle was on his way to confess his sins to Sora and accept his fate. He would give anything not to have to break Sora's heart but he couldn't live a lie. Sora's window was open and Kyle landed gracefully in her living room. Soranik Natu was currently in the middle of the room staring off into nowhere in particular when she felt a presence behind her. Kyle could tell that she had been crying but before he could ask a question he saw that look of sorrow on her face shift to one of rage. Kyle barely managed to create a shield construct before a powerful blast of energy struck the spot where he stood. Kyle almost lost his footing but his construct held. He watched as Sora's purple eyes narrowed and she created a green mace and began whaling on Kyle's shield. Green sparks flew from Kyle's construct as he re-enforced the strength of the construct.
“Sora?” Kyle managed to get out as his crimson skinned lover bashed away at his shield.
“BASTARD!!!” Sora screamed at Kyle before she finally managed to knock the defensive construct out of her way. Kyle quickly closed the distance between them and managed to stop her next attack before it occurred.
Kyle deftly moved behind Sora and wrapped his arms around her, almost putting her in a full nelson lock. Sora began swearing in her native tongue as she flailed about trying to get free from her lover's grip. Kyle finally managed to get near her as she tired and with his mouth inches from her ear asked why she was attacking him.
“As if you don't know!” Sora barked.
“Sora...”
“I KNOW!” Sora answered.
“You know what?” Kyle asked but deep down knew what she meant. He loosened his grip and Sora managed to squirm her way out of his grasp. Sora pushed Kyle out of arms reach and glared at him intently. Sora broke the glare and managing to compose herself walked over to her couch and collapsed on it. Kyle watched as the daughter of Sinestro, his strong willed Sora lost said composure and began to cry. The tears of pain that she had been holding back fell and she sobbed into the arm of her couch.
Kyle moved towards her when she said the words he dreaded the most since his arrival.
“I saw you last night.” She finally answered.
Kyle sat down on the opposite end of the couch and his shoulders just slumped. He released a heavy sigh and waited for whatever was to happen next.
“Aren't you going to say anything?” Sora asked in a hurt tone of voice.
“Anything I say will just sound like an excuse. Still... I never intended for anything to happen with Jen, I don't know why I even went there originally. I... I...”
“You love her.” Sora stated. It was not a question, it was a fact.
“Yes.” Kyle answered. She could tell there was no confusion, nor hesitation in his answer.
“Despite everything that happened, how your relationship ended last time... you're choosing her over me?” Sora inquired.
“Sora, Jen is my soul mate. She was the one I always wanted to spend my life with. When she died... I was lost for a very long time.” Kyle explained.
“I want you to know that you were never her substitute... I gave my heart to you I... I just...”
“Stop!” Sora stated. “I don't want to hear some melodramatic earth statement like, 'The heart wants what the heart wants'.”
Kyle nodded.
“I want you to leave, and never come back here.” Sora ordered.
“I understand.” Kyle responded.
Kyle walked back to the window he entered and was about to leave when Sora called out to the man she loved. “Kyle... was... was any of it real?”
Kyle jetted out of the room before Sora could say or do anything else. He knew the longer he stayed the worse things would get and he didn't want to cause her any more pain and suffering than she must have already gone through.
Sora sat weeping on the couch for several more minutes before her ring lost the last of its charge. When this happened the illusion that Sora had been casting dropped and her slender and curvacious form shifted to that of a curvacious pregnant Korugaran. Sora ran her left hand over her enlarged stomach and cried for the child in her womb.
“I'm sorry darling.” Sora whispered to her unborn child. “Daddy won't be staying with us.”
As the words left her mouth Soranik Natu felt a wave of regret wash over her. She knew that if she had told him about the child that he would most likely stay. Kyle Rayner, despite his current lapse in judgment, was a noble man. But she knew that if she played that card she would only be trapping him in a relationship, and not the kind that either of them would want in the long run. Her baby was a miracle. No Terran has ever managed to mate with a Korugarian in history, she didn't have an explanation for their conception, but she would carry the baby to term and raise it on her own.
“I don't need your father.” Sora stated aloud as she ran her fingers over her swollen stomach.
Upon uttering those words Sora heard what appeared to be a very low cackling. The sound unnerved her and Sora got up and made her way to her bed chambers. The cackling increased in volume as Sora pulled her power battery from its storage container. She quickly charged her ring as the cackling now filled her modest living quarters. Once the ring was at full capacity Sora used her ring to hide her current medical state and went out in search of the wicked laugh. She didn't have to go far as she found an unknown Guardian of the Universe in her living room.
“It is time my dear.” The unknown figure stated.
“Who are you?” Sora asked clutching the battery while aiming her ring at the figure floating before her.
“I am Krona.” The former guardian stated.
“Krona the Mad?” Soranik inquired.
“I see you've heard of me.”
“Kyle Rayner told me of you. He said you were dead.”
“I was, but I live once more and am now ready to collect you my dear.” Krona informed the pregnant lantern.
“Over your dead body.” Sora stated and fired a blast of energy at Krona. The former guardian easily deflected the blast and Sora fired three more times with the same effects.
“You have no chance of resisting me my dear. I mean you no harm but I will have you for my plans.”
“I will not aid you in any of your plans.” Sora spat.
“Ohhhh but you already have my dear.” Krona informed her. “You already have.” And upon saying that Sora saw the wicked grin on his face. Krona's eyes turned green and Sora felt the illusion that her ring presented fade. Her pregnant state was revealed to the Mad Oan and Sora suddenly realized how she figured into his plans.
Before she could attack and inadvertently injure her child Krona nodded and Ion, the Entity of Will, arrived. Sora had seen the entity before and knew of its benign nature but did not know why it was her until it lunged forward and took possession of the crimson skinned woman. Sora felt her will being sapped and her mind taken over by the entity.
“Come Ion.” Krona stated. “We have to place her with the others. She was first, so she will be farther along. We must make sure that all is well with your child.”
Sora, now controlled by Ion, nodded and followed the mad Oan. As it slowly floated behind the diminutive figure Ion briefed Soranik Natu on Krona's plans, and the part it played in her present condition. It implored to Sora how sorry it was, that it could not go against Krona's wishes but that it too had a plan. It once again apologized for also robbing her of its father by informing her of its role in Kyle and Jen's reunion.
In the end, tears fell from Sora's face, but they were for her child, not herself. Sora wiped said tears and acknowledged the entity. She watched as Krona created a portal in Sora's apartment and the duo left for Krona's temple on Ryut to begin the final stages of the Mad Oan's plans.
