Chapter Nine: Never Ever
Donatello felt worlds better now than when he first climbed out that window. When he swung himself back in, he had the same intrigued look on his face that came natural. Clearly, he was curious about his father's decision as well. After the talk they had earlier, though, he was certain that Master Splinter was aware of his standpoint. If Breech couldn't stay in the lair, Don would be spending significantly less time there, as well. "Have a nice nap, Mister Jones?" He grinned politely.
"I don't remembuh fallin' asleep. But it shoah was nice! ...my butt huhts, though." To which he rubbed his thigh awkwardly.
"Aw, did you hurt your poor head?" April asked Casey, ruffling his hair with a chuckle.
" 'ey! Don't rub my head! Make yuhself useful and rub wheah it huhts!" He was oblivious to the severity of this demand. And that was the best part.
“Hey, you’re a butt-head, so I am rubbing it where it hurts,” April tried to ruffle his hair again.
Donatello crossed his arms, "Come to think of it. April did mention Casey in the context of being her 'boyfriend' earlier today, while I was fixing the window. Isn't that right, Miss O'Neil?"
"Hey!" April blushed a little, "I didn't say Casey's my boyfriend! I said I had a boyfriend before I met Casey. This great hulking lump probably scared him off..." This was totally untrue, and they both knew it, or at least Don was pretty sure of it and April knew it. She had left her last boyfriend several months before she'd met Casey.
Casey's pain had suddenly become non-existent, because his eyes grew wide for one moment, and he grinned the next, placing a daring arm around April. "Oh yeah? Befoah yuh met me, eh? Dat's intrestin'. If I ain't yuh boyfriend, why's my name comin' up in duh fuhst place?"
"Ooh, owned by Jones! Busted." Don was enjoying this. He was usually the least likely to tease April about her obvious crush on Casey, but this opportunity was too good to pass up.
Splinter looked on, somewhat amused by the argument. He had seen it a hundred times, but it still quite astonished him that two people who clearly cared about each other so much, were so adept at hiding it and insisting they couldn't stand each other.
"Well, if you were my boyfriend, you'd have had a little more to do last night than watch a wrestling match and chat to Breech," April replied, "And you'd be useful for more than heavy lifting, too."
" 'ey, ain't like I'm the only one who didn't get none last night. If you wuh my guhlfriend, dat coulda been diff'rint." He dropped his arm, and leaned back on the wall behind him.
"Hey, I can do lifting," Breech spoke up, "If I live here, maybe you can dump Casey permanently?" Her grin was wide as she said this, obviously joking.
"You need tuh be quiet, Cat, 'for I stuff some catnip down yuh throat and have yuh dance duh Mackarena." He used his bat to point at her, joking as well.
"You wanted to speak with us, Sensei?" The show had ended. April sure had a way of putting poor Casey down, and he had to interrupt the conversation before April had another chance to do it again. But maybe that's why he clung to her. The possibility of having her to himself was a challenge worth taking.
"Yes," Master Splinter gestured to the dining table, "Sit, both of you." When Breech and Donatello had sat at the table opposite him, he began to speak to his son, "Bridget has told me many things, Donatello - things that she has not yet told you. But you will learn them in time, if you are patient. She has suffered much in her short life - and also has been the cause of much suffering," across from him, Breech scratched her neck awkwardly, "Nonetheless, our discussion has been most enlightening. As much as you would like to believe it, she is not like you and your brothers. I have brought you up to know that you are equal to any human. She has been treated as a freakish animal all her life."
Things she hadn't told him? Like what..? What reason could she possibly have for hiding anything from Donatello; her one blessed friend who accepted her appearance, forgave her sins, and willingly bore the weight and responsibility upon his shoulders of building her a new life? Whatever these things were, he hoped they wouldn't be too bad... "T-that's a big part of the reason I told you she needs our help, Master Splinter. I believe that if Breech saw, witnessed, and experienced our way of life, that she could learn to see the world with eyes unclouded by hate...."
"You are correct, Donatello," Splinter told his son, "I will not discourage your friendship with Bridget. And I will not forbid you from showing her the way to our home, or limit her visits," he turned to Breech, "I have told you, Bridget, of our need to remain secluded from the outside world, and if you are to come and go as you wish, you must help us to maintain that seclusion."
Breech inclined her head, "I understand, Master Splinter," she said calmly.
"But," Splinter held up one finger, "Because of your allergies to felines, Donatello, I cannot permit her to live with us on a permanent basis just yet. Though your reactions to her mutated body are less than those to regular felines, for her to permanently dwell with us would aggravate your condition, and impede your ability to train as a ninja. Perhaps that will change in the event that a more permanent solution than regular doses of over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs is found."
Donatello considered this. He placed a light fist to his lips, evident that he's deep in thought. "This was exactly the conclusion I foresaw before we had this conversation, Sensei." He turned to Breech, and smiled as genuinely as ever. "It looks like you'll have to squeeze into this place with April, for a bit. But I'm sure it'll be fun to have a room-mate who's female. I know from experience - male roomies can be a real pain in the shell."
"It's no squeeze," April said with a smile, "All four of you have been living with me at some point, and we still managed. Better still, it'll be even better to have somebody who can help with the washing up without breaking something." She smirked slightly at Casey.
"Why do I get duh feelin' I'm under-appreciated heah?" Using his bat as a cane, Casey leant on it and crossed one foot over the other. "Women."
"Yeah, well if you can help me get some sort of 'working from home' job, I'll chip in wherever I can," Breech said, "I'm just glad that it's all been sorted," she finished.
"Not quite," Master Splinter held up a finger, "There is the still the delicate matter of you meeting my other sons."
Donatello's face went stern once more when he faced his father again. This time, he placed both fists by his lips. "Which brings me to my next question, Sensei. I hate to ask this. But, what will we do about Raphael?"
"Raphael? Is that the name of one of your brothers?" Breech asked. As of yet, Donatello hadn't actually named his brothers to her.
He nodded, still solemn, "Yeah. Master Splinter likes to introduce us to newcomers, so I've avoided telling you their names. But yes, Raphael is one of my three brothers. I'm afraid I'm bound by respect not to speak negatively of him behind his shell, but Master Splinter knows what I'm implying."
"Yes," Splinter bridged his fingers, meditating on the matter out loud, "Michelangelo will not be a great difficulty. He is very trusting and open-hearted. You have already made Leonardo aware of the situation. I am sure he will accept my judgement on Bridget, although he may not accept her as an individual straight away. Raphael, however, is very protective of our family. He will have great difficulties with trusting an individual who has previous associations with the Foot Clan, and I cannot force him to accept Bridget."
Like Hell you can't, Don thought, but he didn't want to press the matter anymore. It was aggravating him already. So, he turned to Breech instead, and returned to smiling. "Well, you know their names now. Master Splinter named us all after artists from the Italian Renaissance. Legendary men, whose masterpieces are still regarded today as some of the very best of all time. I, for example, am named after Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, immortalized in history as Donatello. He was known for his work in basso rilievo, which is a form of shallow relief sculpture that, in Donatello's case, incorporated significant fifteenth-century developments in perspective illusionism. I think that's pretty cool, don't you?" Donatello was quite gifted with his mind, that's for sure. The simplest, most unappreciated things fascinated him. And he was even more gifted at sharing this fascination with those who were willing to listen.
"Eh?" Casey scratched his head, and nudged April. "Did you unduhstand a t'ing he just blabbed?"
“I... I didn't get out a whole lot back at my old place," Breech said eventually, "Maybe on our second date you could show me some of these works of art?" Her quick mind was already working things out. Not only was she allowed to visit Donatello whenever she liked, and he her, and she'd be training with Master Splinter, who seemed a lot more amicable and less likely to punch you in the face for dropping your eyes than Master Tatsu, but she wouldn't have to actually abide by his rules. Apart from not being caught coming and going, which was something of a given. She might well end up spending half her time there.
The conversation was by far not flirtatious or even slightly romantic in tone, but he couldn't help being bashful at her suggestion. "You considered last night a date, did you?"
"The closest thing I've ever had to a date, anyway," Breech smiled slightly.
"For the intellectually challenged among us," April told Casey helpfully, "Don was talking about art. Not that you'd know anything about any art other than fighting."
Breech raised an eyebrow. Women said those sorts of things as an obvious hint to take you to a museum or art gallery or something, although men rarely caught it. That was one thing you could say all men had in common. They were all jackasses.
Now Casey was especially confused. This was where he lagged - he lacked common sense. He lacked good ideas. He wasn't much of a 'date' person. He'd take April anywhere she liked, but he wouldn't be the one to suggest a museum. "Aht is fightin'. And fightin' is aht. Ain't dat right, Donny?"
"Well," the intelligent Ninja started. "Yes and no. I believe that the Martial Arts are a form of art, but it's far from the only one."
"Yes, Mister Jones." Master Splinter nodded agreeably, "Art and Fighting go hand-in-hand, but techniques provide the hands with the fingers to interlock. The same can be said about Art and Stone, Art and Paint, and Art and Dance." The aging rat smiled at Casey the way one would smile at a small child while they taught them to tie their shoelaces.
"April, why don't you take Casey to the Museum of Historical Art one of these days. Maybe he'll find something he likes?" Donatello saw this opportunity, too. And there's nothing wrong with helping a friend.
"Sure, why not?" April shrugged, "If he could bear to leave the baseball bats at home. It's hard enough to replace the things he breaks in this house, let alone in a museum or an art gallery."
His hand smacked his face loudly, "Aw, Donny! What'd yuh get me intuh now!?" Here he goes whining like a toddler again, "She's gonna take me to a lame-ol' Aht place now! T'anks alot!"
"Calm down, Casey." Donatello raised a waving hand to halt his objections. "You'll like it. It's not that bad, you'll see. Some of the art contains graphic images. Like warriors in battle, and naked men stabbing each other. And clea- I mean, boobs. Lots of boobs. You like boobs, don't you?" He couldn't help smiling.
An eyebrow rose as the man crossed his arms. "Yuh mean I get tuh be wit April, AND see othuh women's jugs at duh same time? ...no way. Too good tuh be true. Yuh settin' me up fuh failuh."
Behind April, Breech made a deliberate grin and two thumbs up to Casey, to get him to realise this was one of those things he'd have to do if he wanted to get some ass.
Casey got the idea, "All right. But aftuh dat, I get tuh take YOU, tuh Fight Night." Casey grinned. "Den I'll show yuh some REAL graphic aht."
Splinter shook his head, "Kids...."
"Sounds like a fair trade to me." Don turned to Breech now. "I can't wait to show you the lair. You're gonna love it! The pool turns into a hot-tub, and we have a dojo the size of two of these apartments. And wait 'til you see the truck I built. You'll beg me to build you a convertible just like it!"
"I can't drive," Breech pointed out, "I mean, I've been in cars and I think I know how it all works... but I've never actually been behind the wheel. And not just because I'm too short to reach the pedals of the trashy pimpmobile my old family drove."
He shook his head, smiling at her hesitance. She sure was innocent, in ways he had lost long ago, "You'll catch on quickly, you'll see. And I have loads of other things to show and teach you, too. ..I can show you the computer I've been using to chat with you all this time, and we can re-read all of our chats, too. They're all on there, just as promised." When she actually got there, he wouldn't know what to point out first! He built nearly everything there. He'll be overwhelmed! This was exciting.
Breech smiled at Don, then looked up, "Anyway, Casey," she smirked, "About that deal we made? I figure you owe me some noise pretty soon."
Don had to play along. "Deal? What deal?"
"Back oaff, Stem-Head. Dis heah's between me and duh Cat. Yuh bettuh have scabs on yuh hands pretty soon yuhself, Sassy." He said all this with a grin and a thumbs-up.
Don looked over at April , and gave his best, ‘I dunno!’ expression.
April was pretty confused by Breech's comment too, "You two made a deal last night?" she asked, curious.
Master Splinter watched intently, "It appears that Bridget has found friends among the most unexpected of acquaintances..."
"Yeah," Breech smirked again, answering April. "Mostly to maintain what little sanity we each have left. Don't worry about it, April. I'm more interested in when I'm gonna get to meet the rest of your family, Donny." As per usual, the feline demonstrated the attention span of your average goldfish, or possibly that of a cat.
Don shook his head, grinning. "If it were up to me, dear feline friend, you'd be in the lair right now, and the three goons currently within its complex architecture would be stuck here with April. The thought of that just fills her with delight, I'm sure."
April raised an eyebrow, “Casey, you and I are going to have to have a little chat about this sometime soon. You’re not the best negotiator.”
"True. I bargained fuh you, after all," Casey's grin remained.
"It seems to me like you'll have to keep an eye on these two, April. They've been scheming." Looking down at the table, Donny picked the forgotten pouch up, and decided on revealing what was inside before the subject was pursued any longer. "I built you a new camera, by the way. It attaches to the helmet I built for you a few months ago. It's got a simple mainframe, so you should be able to zoom in and out, and toggle between focuses easily. It has two buttons on it, and a trigger. Excellently simple compared to most modern-day Digital Cameras, and better quality." He replaced it on the table as he spoke. "Sooner or later, I'm also going to build you a pair of goggles that can connect to this camera, so that whatever you see, directly from your eyes, the camera will capture. It's going to beat the shell out of it capturing whatever your forehead does." His bandanna itched for a moment, and he scratched at the side of his head, "Of course, it'll have audio capabilities so that you can narrate your many adventures as a news reporter as well. Four variations of lenses. Stylish, and affective. You're gonna love it!"
April smiled warmly at him, especially after he mentioned the lenses. "Thanks, Don! That should come in handy!" Casey was lucky - you couldn't give too many upgrades to a baseball bat or a golf club. Don was always coming up with upgrades and new toys for her as well as his brothers - it gave him so much pleasure to do so that she didn't have the heart to tell him that he made so many time-saving devices, that she didn't always actually have the time to use them; not if she wanted to eat or sleep.
"Ah, yes, meeting the family..." Still dwelling on Breech's comment, Splinter thoughtfully replied, "Putting it off will not make it any easier, of course..."
Rubbing the back of his head, Donny spoke with a slight tad of worry. "I was actually hoping we could warn the guys about it first, Sensei. Just showing up with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Kitty might make Mikey leap right out of his shell."
"Now dare's a thought." The visual of Mikey's reaction to a mutated cat was one that made the New Yorker smile.
April was also amused by the idea. "That Mikey..." She shook her head at the thought of him.
"Well..." Master Splinter stood with the aid of his cane, "It has been not only enlightening, but also a pleasure to meet you, Bridget," he smiled at the feline, who stood with him, "But now I must return to the lair with Donatello until we can sufficiently explain your situation to his brothers. Nonetheless," he looked at April and Casey with a dry smile, "I expect you will find much entertainment here."
Breech smiled, and bowed slightly, "Yes, Master Splinter," she said, "I hope we'll see each other again very soon. And I hope you can explain me to Don's brothers."
"Oh, we'll have one doozy of a time doing that. Before we go, though. Breech, may I have a word with you up on the roof? It'll just take a moment." Don't face was gleeful. Respectful, and aware, but gleeful.
"Dat mean I can't in'errupt again?" Jones was being brash again.
"I'd very much prefer that you didn't. If you do, however, I'll give Breech my permission to break her promise just once." Don's face was sheepish with smirk.
"Is it another present?" Breech asked, smiling slightly but still looking a little nervous.
"Oh no. Doing that once was humiliating enough. I won't make the same mistake twice. I promise!" Don was also a little nervous about that...
"Well, that's okay then," Breech smiled, "Meet you there!" She jumped out of the window and scaled the building to the roof in a flash.
"I'll be back in a flash, Sensei!" And Don followed. When he got to the roof, he stood before her with his trademark smile, and took a deep breath. Then he dropped his bo and engulfed her in the hardest, most joyous hug he had yet. "Oh, Breech! I'm so happy! It's all working out so great --" He let go, so he could speak to her face-to-face. "You were excellent! Amazing! Perfect, even! My father loves you! Oh, and I can see him commenting on how visually stunning you are the moment we're within the safety of the hallway!" He had the smiles of a million laughing children on his complexion right now.
"Woah! Not so hard, Turtle-boy!" Breech grinned back at him, "I think you're confusing my light bones with Casey's thick skull!" Even so, she was delighted herself, and would love to hug him back - just as soon as he loosened his grip a little.
He took her words as a challenge, and did the next best thing. Holding her at arms' reach, he picked her up and twirled her. Twice. Then set her down. "You're the most amazing person I've ever met! Where've you been all my life? If I'd known that a Teenage Mutant Ninja Cat was all I needed to make me this happy, I'd have bid for one on eBay when I was nine! You're lucky I'm not hugging you to pieces right now because I totally could!" He held her lightly by her shoulders, and pressed his forehead warmly onto hers, just like before. "You little predator, you." His eyes shown.
“Hey, it's Teenage Mutant Kunoichi!" Breech hugged him back tightly, "And I'm so glad your father likes me...." she buried her face in Don's plastron and held onto him, "I mean, I knew I was okay with April, but I didn't know if I could explain myself to Master Splinter..." She was too excited to actually feel him up right now though. She paused, "Oh, and about the telling him things I haven't told you? Well, one of those things was... well, he'll be telling you and your brothers soon enough. I didn't know you didn't know, is all."
Don shook his head. He didn't care about it right now. He didn't have a care in the world, for that matter. Raph's Shell Cycle, Mikey's Stereo System and Leo's new sheaths could wait for a while, "Shush. Listen. Whatever you haven't told me, you must not have told me for a reason." He held onto her wrists, holding her hands to his chest. "I trust you with all my heart, Breech. And I'll never pressure you into telling me something you'd much rather not, regardless of your reasoning." He didn't care . It was all too good to be true. He didn't care one bit. He rubbed his forehead side-to-side on hers, the contact between them warming his head. "Thank you so much for entering my life like this, Breech. You've filled such a gap. You have no idea..."
Breech just smiled back, her eyes meeting his again, "I can honestly say the same for you, Don," she told him, "I don't know if you'll ever understand what you've saved me from... I know we've both had hard lives, but..." She couldn't find the words. She could have sat down with him for hours and she wasn't sure he'd ever fully grasp the horrible situation she'd been trapped in all her life. Instead, she took her hands from his plastron, and moved his hands to rest over her chest, "It's like, for the first time in 17 years... I actually feel alive."
He closed his eyes, and smiled into her touch. Her presence. Her warmth, "I could stay here like this forever..."
"I know how you feel," Breech could see his eyes starting to stream again, "But... we can't. For now at least, that's something we're both going to have to accept."
"No! Don't go away. Not yet. I don't care if I'm allergic, this moment's too special!" He lifted her hands to touch his face, and snuggled into the comfort of her fur, "I don't wanna let you go..."
Breech could feel her heart aching at the fact that they couldn't be as close as she wanted to be. Was it because Don had saved her? Because he was the first friend she'd ever had who wasn't likely to overdose on drugs? Was it because he was another mutant? Or because she would probably never be able to truly have him? They'd barely known each other for a few hours, and she already craved his presence.
Don held her in place for a few more moments. Sure, his lungs started bitching, but who cared? He took very good care of them. "I'm gonna find a cure, Breech. I'll work day and night if I have to. But I'm going to find a cure for this insanity. I promise..." His chest bumped with pain, and not due of his lungs. To finally find someone to love, but not be able to hold her, was a hellish torture.
"If I had to be away from you day and night while you were distracted by finding a cure, I'd pass up on the cure, Donny," Breech told him softly. She stroked his cheek, "It's you I really need... not your body. Though that's pretty hot too right now..." she blushed at the comment, even if she was trying to joke.
"Oh, don't get me started on your body..." Don smiled back at her. "Right now would be the perfect moment to ask you to be my girl. But, something tells me you already are..."
Breech blushed some more, "Well, there's one thing I probably do feel like telling you. I'm not totally naive about... what I think I'm starting to want. I... was kinda friends with a hooker, before she killed herself with a drug overdose. So I'm not totally ignorant 'bout... how I feel."
"We'll get there someday, Breech. I doubt I'll be able to keep my hands off you for long..." He also began to blush, and his hands loosened their grip. "But in truth, none of that matters to me, either. In the long run, all I want is you. You make me happy..."
"Now that's what I really want from you," Breech smiled at him.

SonicFrank: We know Master Splinter’s a great old guy, we just hope he didn’t overdose on the “you are accepted” with Breech. That’s why they talked for two hours. Some of their conversation will come to light in future chapters.
Harley: Next chapter, the guys learn about Breech. It’ll be reaction time!
