Rellek trekked through the maze of sewer pipes with ease, crawling on his hands and knees when necessary to squeeze through many of the smaller ones. Trevor followed tiredly behind him, trying his best to keep up with Rellek without causing him to stop and wait for him to catch up, which he did every time he felt that Trevor had gotten too far behind him. Trevor had no doubt that Rellek knew exactly where he was going. Finally, they reached a conduit with a ladder leading up to a manhole that was pretty close to their building. Rellek went up the ladder first, his shoulders barely able to scrunch through the cylinder. He reached up with one hand and popped the manhole cover off, causing it to fly up in the air and land on the pavement with a loud clanking thud a few feet away. Rellek found that the exit of the hole was just a tad too small for him to get out without causing damage to the structure, so he reached out, placing his hands on both sides of the ground, and pulled himself out, causing the concrete around to split open and the metal to bend and stretch to allow for his girth. Trevor stood back to avoid the falling debris as Rellek forced his way through to the surface. When Rellek was all the way out he grunted down into the hole, signaling Trevor to follow him. Trevor had his way up the ladder carefully and when he’d reached the top, Rellek grabbed him by the arm and lifted him the rest of the way out, setting him down on the ground outside. It was nearly dark, the sun having set, but some of its light still shown on the horizon. Thankfully, there was no one else around. The manhole they’d come out of was well within the abandoned industrial section of town that they lived in. Rellek turned and started moving in the direction of their building with Trevor quietly following him. When the building came into his sight he remembered Jane and stopped in his tracks. Rellek kept moving but after a few steps he realized that Trevor had stopped following him. He turned around and saw him standing several feet back away from him and grunted for him to follow. Trevor started moving slowly towards him then stopped again as Rellek was about to turn away from him and start moving again.
“Wait a second,” Trevor called to him meekly.
“What?” Rellek bellowed at him.
“Um…you know that girl?” Trevor asked shyly.
“What…girl?” asked Rellek in a puzzled tone.
“I think her name is Jane?” Trevor said in a questioning tone.
“Ohhh,” Rellek drawled and then he made a chuckling sound.
“Umm…do you know where she is?” asked Trevor.
“Of course,” Rellek said with a bark.
“Well, um…do you think…I mean…you know,” Trevor said, fumbling the words.
“What?” Rellek questioned flatly.
Trevor sighed. “Where is she?” he asked in a curious tone.
Rellek didn’t answer, he just stood there looking at Trevor with a blank expression.
“Could I see her?” Trevor asked politely.
Rellek let out a loud grunt that was almost like a sigh. “Come on,” he said, motioning for Trevor to follow him as he started heading in a direction different to the building where they lived.
Trevor followed him and was lead to a pumping station down by the river. He could hear the equipment running as he got closer to the fenced-in area. Rellek peeled back a large section of the fence that was already loose and held it open for Trevor who went through it followed closely by Rellek. Rellek went on ahead of him to a large manhole imbedded in a concrete slab that protruded from the ground. He reached down and stuck his finger into a curved opening on the side of the lid and yanked the whole lid off with one hand and tossed it aside. Then he peered down into the hole and motioned for Trevor to come closer. When Trevor reached the edge of the hole Rellek jumped down into it, landing with a splash at the bottom at least 10 feet down. Trevor began climbing down the ladderwell to follow him and before he had reached the bottom, Rellek plucked him off the ladder and set him down on a narrow walkway to the side of where he was standing in almost three feet of dirty water. The walkway was too narrow for him so he stayed in the water as he lead Trevor down through the dark, dripping tunnel. After walking a few minutes they reached an intersection where another tunnel joined the one they had been following to the right. Rellek pointed in that direction and they started walking that way. Finally, they came to a place where a large section of the wall had been broken into. Rellek stopped there and pointed inside and then he took his other hand and used it to push Trevor inside the opening. Once he was all the way in Trevor turned around and saw Rellek put his foot up onto the floor inside the opening and step over the metal grating he had been walking on to get inside and hunch down so his head wouldn’t break through the ceiling. Unsure of where Rellek wanted him to go next Trevor stood there until Rellek pushed him towards another opening in the wall to their left. Trevor looked inside and saw Jane lying on the ground with her hands bound up around a big metal pipe that was coming out of the floor. She appeared to be unconscious. Trevor looked back at Rellek and then back at the girl. Then he started moving towards her and Rellek did not make any attempt to stop him so he kept on going until he was right next to her. Trevor bent down close to her and lightly touched her shoulder. Jane screamed at his touch and recoiled away, causing Trevor gasp and jump back in surprise, falling over backwards as he went, his hands touching the wet, gritty floor until he managed to regain his balance.
“Shh, it’s ok, I’m not going to hurt you,” he assured her in a whispered tone.
Jane sobbed. “Please…get me out of here,” she begged.
“Ok, I’ll try…just calm down,” he told her.
Trevor looked back at Rellek who was still just standing there behind them, watching them through the entrance of the small room, and Trevor got up and slinked over towards him. “Will you…please…just let her go now?” Trevor pleaded to him.
“Why should I?” Rellek said.
“Please…” Trevor begged, looking up into Rellek’s face and putting his hands together in front of him as he said it. “Just this one.”
Rellek grunted another sigh as he crawled in through the opening as Trevor moved back towards Jane to get out of his way. As Rellek approached Jane she started making a whiny, screechy sound in terror.
Trevor shushed her loudly. “Be quite and don’t move,” he commanded her.
When Rellek got close enough he reached over her and grabbed the chain that was binding her arms to the pipe and broke it free. Jane stayed where she was for the moment until Trevor took her by the arm and led her through the small space around Rellek to get back to the opening. Rellek made a deep growing sound as she passed by him but Trevor kept her moving. He led her all the way back out to the ladder that lead up to the surface and encouraged her to climb up it.
“Go on, hurry up,” he said in an urgent tone, motioning frantically for her to get climbing. “Get up there and start running home as fast as you can and don’t look back,” he instructed her.
“Thank you,” Jane said weakly as she began climbing the ladder as fast as she could. She was almost to the top when Trevor saw Rellek coming towards him, sloshing his way through the murky water. Trevor walked over to him and tried to think of something to say to keep his attention away from Jane. Rellek could easily still catch her if he wanted to.
“Thanks…you didn’t have to do this…I really appreciate it,” he said honestly.
Rellek just shook his head and grunted at him as he started heading towards the ladder. Jane had finally made her way to the top and had climbed out of the hole. Rellek started climbing the ladder and he made his way quickly to the top as Trevor started following him. When Rellek got to the surface he could see Jane running away. For a second he was about to go after her when he heard Trevor coming up the ladder so he shifted his gaze from Jane to look down at him. Then he bent down and reaching both of his hands down into the hole he grabbed Trevor by his shoulders and lifted him out much the same way he’d done earlier, setting him in the ground right in front of him. After Rellek had released his grip Trevor started heading back towards their building with Rellek following him.
As they approached the entrance of their building, Rellek put his hand on Trevor’s shoulder to stop him from walking, causing Trevor to turn around to face him.
“We have to leave now,” Rellek told him. “We have to find another place.”
With a weary sigh, Trevor nodded his head, and when he got inside the building he headed straight up to his room and started packing his meager belongings. A short time later, all of their things were packed into the rusty old truck they kept parked out back. Trevor had salvaged many different parts from junkyards around the area to get it running again. Rellek drove the truck, which had been modified a bit to accommodate his unusual size, out onto the freeway while Trevor sat on the passenger side of the cab and began to take what he hoped would turn out to be a long nap.
