You have this power over me
And there's no way to fight it
I can't help but gravitate towards you,
This is a force I can't defeat
Angel Eyes, New Years Day
“There’s something I need you to do.” Bane said, gesturing for me to sit.
I walked around to his side of the desk, leaning on it. “Sure. What is it?”
“I need you to break into a vault.” He reached into a drawer and pulled out a list. “The Mayor keeps a few things in there that my client wants back. There’s a party on tonight, so no one will be paying attention to the basement. All you need to do is get in, use the code to unlock the vault, and find the items on the list. Rob will cover the security, you just get in and out.”
“Easy.” I took the list and turned to leave, hesitating when he took hold of my arm.
“Be careful. The guards will shoot to kill without thinking twice.”
I nodded, hiding my surprise. Every time I spoke to him, he seemed to find a new way to show the emotional, softer side of him. I wanted more, but I needed to focus.
Making my way down to the garage, I found Rob waiting for me. He had blueprints of the mansion laid out on the bonnet of the car, and he waved me over.
“I’ve mapped out a path for you to get in that will bypass most of the cameras in the mansion. The rest I can hack into and take out on my own. There shouldn’t be many guards around, but I’m guessing you can handle those.” He traced the path in for me.
“Yeah, should be pretty easy.” I memorised the path. “Let’s go.”
It was a long drive to the mansion, well over half an hour, and I could feel the excitement building inside me. This is what I love doing, and I knew that even though I was a little out of practice, it would be easy enough to get in and out.
As we pulled up outside the back gate into the grounds, Rob turned off the car and pulled out his laptop. He got to work, not looking at me as he started to speak.
“If you screw this up, I will drive off and leave you here.” He quietly tapped away on the keyboard. “I just wanted you to know that.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything else.” I pulled my gloves on, picking up my backpack. “Can I go in now? I’ll go in this way, but I’ll need you to pick me up at the front gate in about twenty minutes.”
He nodded, handing me an earpiece and a small lapel mic. “Be careful. Wear this, so we can talk to each other if we need to.”
I put the earpiece in, clipping the mic to my jacket. Taking a deep breath, I calmed myself down. I got out of the car, taking a moment to look around as I swung my backpack on. The fence was tall, but there was a tree nearby. I climbed up the trunk, walking along a thick branch that stretched over the the top.
From there, it was easy enough to drop to the ground. I landed in a roll, picking myself up and quietly running towards the mansion. There were lights and cameras, and I had to trust that Rob was dealing with them.
Creeping up to a window, I slid it open and climbed inside. The hallway was brightly lit, and decorated with intricate paintings and statues. There was no one around, so I continued on along the path Rob had traced for me. The basement door was locked, but I was hoping I still remembered how to pick it.
“How long will it take for you to break in?” Rob asked, his voice in my ear.
“A minute. Maybe less if you don’t distract me.” I pulled out the picks from my bag, getting to work. “Let me know if anyone is coming.”
There was a moment’s silence, then he spoke again. “There’s a guard around the corner, but he’s on his phone, and he can’t hear you.”
I turned the tension wrench, feeling the lock click open. Stepping into the basement, I closed and locked the door behind me. Down a few steps, I found a room.
There was no furniture or anything, just a large metal door in the middle of the back wall. I walked over to the keypad.
“Just wait a second.” Rob said quietly. “One of the guards is walking along the corridor. I don’t think he’ll hear you, but it’s not worth the risk.”
I leaned against the wall, trying to breathe silently. My heart was racing with excitement, but I ignored it.
“Alright, you’re good.”
I pulled the list out of my bag, checking the code. Typing it in, I breathed a sigh of relief when the system beeped and I heard the locks slide open.
Everything inside was labelled and sorted, so it was easy to find what I was looking for. Four files from the perfectly organised filing cabinets. I was curious about what was inside of the files, but I didn’t open them. I know how this business works, and I didn’t fancy getting myself killed for my curiosity.
“Are you nearly finished?”
I carefully slid the drawer closed. “I’ve grabbed the files. Give me five to get out.”
Getting in was easy, but getting out was harder. As I turned to close the basement door, Rob spoke again.
“There’s a guard coming, but I don’t think you have time to get out.”
“It’s fine, I can handle it.” I looked over at the guard coming towards me, plastering a smile on my face.
“What are you doing?” He asked, his hand resting on his gun. “You can’t be back here.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” I sweetly replied, drawing him in with my voice. “I’m sure it’s perfectly fine.”
His face softened and he released his hold on the gun.
“There now, that’s better.” I placed my hands either side of his face, looking into his bright eyes. “You must be so tired, keeping watch over the mansion.”
“I’m a little tired.” He nodded, yawning.
“Of course you are.” I took a breath in, preparing myself. “You should sleep.”
My voice echoed around him, vibrating against the nerves in his brain. He slumped to the ground, asleep.
“Jesus, did you kill him?” Rob asked.
“Nah. He’s asleep.” I stepped over the guard’s prone body. “He’ll be out for a few hours, or until someone wakes him.”
“Then you better hurry up.”
I rolled my eyes, then headed down the corridor. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get out via the back gate, so I would need to talk my way out the front.
Climbing back out the window, I crept towards the cars parked at the entrance. There were a couple of men around, but they were chatting with each other and clearly distracted. It was honestly astounding how lax the security was here, considering how many of Gotham’s rich and famous were at the party.
“Get down, behind the red car.”
I did as I was told, crouching down and waiting for Rob to give me the all clear. Footsteps went past, the sound getting quieter as they got further away.
“If you look to your left, there’s a green convertible. Go around it, and you’ll be able to just run through the gate. As long as you stay low, they won’t see you.”
Creeping around the green car, I ran towards the gate. He was right, once I got past that car, it was easy to get past the rest of the guards. I sped off down the road, slowing to a walk once I was out of sight of the house.
A few moments later, Rob drove up. He stopped the car beside me, and I climbed in.
“I’m impressed.” He said quietly, as he started driving. “I was skeptical.”
I bit my lip, looking out of the window. “I didn’t give you a reason to trust that I can do what I say I can.”
He didn’t reply, just focused on driving. I was happy just sitting in silence, at least until I got a strange vibe. Something was about to happen, and I didn’t know what it was.
Suddenly a bright light blinded me, and there was a sudden bang as a truck slammed into the side of our car. My head hit the window as we skidded sideways, crashing into a wall.
Dazed and unable to think, I didn’t fight as Rob hauled me out of the car and placed me down on the ground. I was in pain, my vision blurring as blood trailed down my face.
“What…” I trailed off, suddenly dizzy. I was momentarily distracted by the sound of the truck driving off, but then the pain brought me back.
“Someone hit us. I’m going to get you out of here, just stay with me.” His voice was getting further and further away, so quiet.
I tried to focus on him, on his face, but everything was getting so dark. I felt someone touch my arm, but I was too far gone to see who it was.
He could hear shouting from downstairs. It was frantic shouting, the kind that means something has gone wrong. Running towards the voices, he found Rob carrying her into kitchen and placing her down on the table. There was so much blood on her face, he could barely recognise her.
“What the hell happened?” He asked.
“Someone rammed us off the road. They hit her side of the car. Jack is getting the doctor right now.”
“Out.”
Rob hesitated, looking at his boss. “What?”
“I said, out!” Bane snapped. “I don’t want anyone else in here until the doctor arrives.”
Once the room was clear, he turned his attention back to her. He wiped some of the blood off her face, trying to gauge how bad the damage was. She stirred, her eyes fluttering open for a moment, but then she was out again.
He leaned his hands on the table, feeling guilty for what was quite possibly the first time in his entire life. He had a pretty good idea of what had happened, and if he was right, that meant her injuries were his fault.
