For the two of us, home isn't a place. It is a person. And we are finally home. Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss
I sat at the end of the bed, biting my lip as I waited for the results of the pregnancy test. It was the longest wait of my life, made worse by the fact that it was a digital test that had a little progress bar showing how close it was to completion.
Standing up, I walked to my closet to get changed. Anything to keep my mind off that test for a little while. It was a cooler day, so I pulled on a dress and some thin tights, just to take the chill off.
Then I took a deep breath, prepared myself, and returned to the test. And there it was, in big bold letters: PREGNANT. Just to be certain, I waited an hour and used a second test, still getting the same result.
I wasn’t sure what I was feeling, a strange mix of panic, happiness and numbness sweeping over my body. All I knew was that I would need to tell Bruce, and I didn’t even know how to start that conversation.
Before I could think too hard about it, my phone began to ring. I was surprised to find that it was Alfred calling, but I picked up straight away.
“Alfred? Did something happen?”
“Bruce was attacked by Harvey. It’s not serious, but he’ll be in Gotham Central for a little while longer. I thought you would want to know so that you can go see him.”
My eyes went wide, and the panic quickly took over. “I’ll drive right there. Thank you for letting me know.”
Hanging up, I grabbed my bag and keys and ran downstairs to my car. I drove a little too fast, and pretty recklessly, to the hospital, but thankfully I made it there without trouble.
A nurse led me through to his bed in the ER, where a doctor was putting the last stitch in a wound on his arm. His cheek was grazed and a little bruised, but other than that and the wound, he seemed to be alright.
“Bruce, are you okay?” I asked.
He nodded, his dark hair falling over his eyes. “It looks worse than it is.”
The doctor stood up, turning to me. “He’s taken a pretty hard knock to the head. We did a scan and everything looks fine, but I want him to stay another half an hour just to make sure nothing changes.” She left us, pulling the curtains closed so we could have some privacy.
“What happened?” I softly touched his cheek, just below the fresh bruise that was forming.
He took my hand, holding it to his chest. “He caught me by surprise. I managed to fight him off, but he slashed at my arm with a knife. He took off when other people approached.”
I didn’t reply, just tried to calm my pounding heart. He looked like he was going to be alright, but the fear and panic was hard to shake. I guess he must have recognised the look I was giving him, because he reached out, placing his hands on both sides of my face.
“Eve, I’m fine. Don’t I look fine?” He laughed a little.
I sat down on the bed beside him. I wanted to tell him right then, but it was not the time. It would have to wait until we got home.
Leaning over, I softly kissed him. “I won’t lie, you look pretty rough right now. But I think you’ll heal up fine. And if you don’t… facial scars are pretty hot, at least to me.”
“That’s a relief.” He joked, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. I could almost feel the smile on his face. “For a moment there, I thought you would leave me.”
“You really don’t have to do this.” Bruce said, taking off his shirt and sitting down on the bed. “I am capable of cleaning a wound out.”
I climbed into his lap, straddling his legs as I opened the first aid kit. “I’m trying to do something nice for you, Bruce. You don’t need to question it.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry.” He pressed a kiss to my cheek. “Thank you.”
I peeled the bandage off his arm, then pulled out an antiseptic wipe. I could feel the weight of his gaze on me as I carefully cleaned around the stitches. I still hadn’t told him the news yet, and it had been nearly 24 hours since I’d found out.
“You’re so beautiful.” He whispered, running his fingers through my hair.
I blushed, a little embarrassed, as I carefully stuck a new bandage over his wound. “You’re being extra sweet today. Has something changed?” Standing up, I took the rubbish to the bin and put the first aid kit away.
“Nothing really.” He replied, watching me. “But there is something I wanted to talk to you about.”
Nodding, I walked over to lean against the window sill. “Go ahead.”
“I know you were feeling insecure about Catwoman, and I wanted to know how I can make you more comfortable. She does help with information…”
I held out my hand, stopping him. There was no way to have this discussion without telling him the news, so I just went for it. “I overreacted when I got upset about that. Um…” I hesitated, not even sure how to begin. “Remember when we were talking last week about how I haven’t been feeling like myself?”
He nodded, walking over. “What is it?”
“I’m pregnant.” I whispered, so quietly I wasn’t sure if he could hear me.
His eyes went wide, and he gasped. “Are you sure?”
“Fairly. I took two tests and both came back positive. I guess I should go get a blood test to be certain, but yeah, I’m pretty sure.” I was starting to ramble, but I couldn’t seem to stop. “I know when we talked about a family you didn’t seem to think we could make it work, but…”
He suddenly kissed me, stopping me in my tracks. “Take a breath, Eve. You’re right, I didn’t think we could make it work. But now I’m actually dealing with it… My thoughts are different. I’ll support whatever decision you make here, but if you’re wondering what I want, I want to keep it.”
I burst into happy, relieved tears. “That’s what I want too.”
He pulled me into his arms. Holding me close until I stopped crying, he gently brushed the tears from my eyes.
“We’ve already managed to balance what I do with spending time together and out, we can make this work too.” He said, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “We have time to plan and get ready. How long have you known?”
“I took the test yesterday, but I’ve suspected for a week.” I looked away guiltily. “I wanted to tell you straight away…”
“But you were worried about how I’d react?”
I nodded. “I was scared that if I told you, and you didn’t want the baby, that it would tear us apart.”
“I’m sorry I made it seem like you couldn’t tell me.” He kissed me softly. “I’m 100% behind you, and I will do whatever you need me to.”
“I love you.” I wrapped my arms around his neck, trying not to cry again.
“I love you too.” He traced his fingers down my spine. “This does explain something I’ve noticed though.”
I gave him a confused look. “What’s that?”
He took my hand, walking me into the bathroom and turning me towards the mirror. Standing behind me, he slid his arms around my body.
“You mean you haven’t noticed that your chest has gotten bigger?” He asked.
I looked at myself in the mirror. He had a point. I was starting to bulge out of my bra a little bit.
“My mind has been a little preoccupied.” I laughed. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I didn’t want you to think I was calling you fat.” He kissed my neck. “It doesn’t matter to me how you look, you’ll always be beautiful to me, but I didn’t want to upset you.”
I turned to face him. “I hope you’re still saying that in a few months when I’ve put on weight.”
He carefully picked me up, placing me down on the bench. “I will say it every day for the rest of my life.”
“I have the results of your blood test.” My doctor, Michael, sat down across from us and opened my file on his computer. “You are definitely pregnant. Further along than you thought actually.”
“How far along?” I nervously tapped my fingers against my leg.
Bruce clearly picked up on my anxiety, because he gently took my hand in his and squeezed it.
“Approximately ten weeks.”
My mouth dropped open in shock. I bit my lip, looking over at Bruce, who gestured for me to take a deep breath. I did so, calming myself down. Ten weeks was right when we got together. So I’d basically gotten pregnant the first time we’d had sex.
“Are you sure?” He asked, turning back to Michael.
The older man nodded. “From the hormone levels in your blood, we can make an educated guess. Everything looks good from what I can see here. I’ll refer you to an OB/GYN who can help guide you through the next few months.”
It’s a good thing Bruce was there, because I was still pretty much sitting there in shock. He took charge of the situation, asking questions about the next steps, what we needed to be ready for as parents, everything like that.
“The most important thing the two of you can do right now is relax.” Michael told us. “I know that it’s probably hard to even consider being relaxed at a time like this, but stress will make this process harder for you. Make sure you take some time for yourselves and support each other.”
I nodded, taking the referral he handed me. After thanking him, I took Bruce’s hand and we headed out. Even as we got in the car, I was still in disbelief.
“Eve, are you alright?” Bruce asked, not starting the car yet.
“Ten weeks.” I whispered. “That means…”
He nodded. “You got pregnant straight away. We should have been more careful, but we’re here now, and we can handle this.”
I gave him a small smile, squeezed his hand. He leaned over to kiss me gently, then softly drifted his hand over my stomach.
“You are strong, beautiful, and brave, Eve. You, and our baby, are going to be just fine. I will be here every step of the way.” He didn’t take his hand off me yet. “Are you scared?”
I laughed a little. “Terrified. Terrified and excited and so many different things in my head.”
“Me too. But we have a lot of time before the baby gets here, so let’s just move forward one thing at a time, alright?”
