“Look Betty, here’s a picture of Mantle with one of the Kardashian babes at the Emmy Awards!” Betty was busy making their dinner and made no comment. She
was sick and tired of seeing Reggie with all of those women, though her reason for this was unclear to her. It annoyed her immensely to hear Archie harping about
Reggie all the time.
Archie shook his head and watched Betty for a reaction. She just shrugged, and went on with fixing dinner. Betty never spoke about Reggie to anyone since he
left town eight years ago. But that didn’t stop Archie from pointing out pictures of Reggie to her as often as possible, which seemed to be daily. He’d say things
such as, “There’s that shithead in a picture taken with a famous black model during fashion week in Milan. Same old tired Reggie Mantle. Always has to have the
most beautiful women in the world on his arm. What a show off!” Or “Here’s a picture of that rat’s ass being seen with a beautiful redhead, going into his club in
New York” Archie was literally green with envy.
Later that night when Archie was asleep, Betty cut out the clippings she found in the newspapers and magazines about Reggie, and placed them in a
scrapbook she had made for him. Betty had also made beautiful scrapbooks of Ethel’s modeling career and their old friend Moose Mason’s pro football seasons.
Reggie was in the media more than Moose and Ethel combined. Betty kept every photo and article she found on Reggie. She had filled several books over the
years, though she rarely looked them over, but they were very precious to her. And she kept these albums a secret, hidden awayfrom everyone.
***Betty was severely depressed after her miscarriage, which was compounded by her husband’s neglect and suspected infidelities. She had stopped writing about her misery in her diary three years before, and instead she began sketching outfits again. Some of the outfits were very daring- low cut in front or back, as if she was dressing one of Archie's whores. Betty drew sketches of many dresses that were very short; others were long, casual, or evening wear with lots of glitter and sequins. She also drew designs of long, body hugging dresses with slits in the front, back, or on the side. A potential customer could decide where they wanted to put the slit.

Many times Ethel would beg Betty for one of her original designs so that she could stand out more amongst the other top models in the fashion world. Ethel always gave Betty credit in all her interviews, even though Betty did not want her to do that. She made the clothes from love. It also was a form of therapy for her. Betty had designed and made one very sexy swimsuit that got Ethel on the cover in the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated. Ethel received ten marriage proposals over that swimsuit. It was a swimsuit made of green and brown spandex that crossed the breasts, with a skin tone net in the middle to distract from the fact the breasts may be seen, if you look long and hard enough. The swim suit tantalized a man’s fancy. Many men tried to see through the material to what could be underneath, but nothing ever really showed. The men hoped the swimsuit would reveal the little ‘Blossoms’ underneath. But men kept looking, waiting in hope of seeing her breasts. After seeing Ethel on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Jughead had
called her. He was livid. They had been keeping in touch, off and on, over the years.“Ethel! What's the deal posing naked in a magazine? Think of your parents!” he bellowed.
“Jughead, I wear less than that to parties...” she began. Jughead was choking with rage. He was very angry and jealous.
“Are you kidding me? You need an escort. Ethel, you are a small town girl at heart. I’ll have to protect you from all the crazies out there. You can't go around like that and not expect trouble!”
“Yes Jughead, you’re right. I do need your protection. Can you meet me in Milan?” After that call, Jughead made arrangements for his management staff to run his restaurants while he met with Ethel. Jughead met Ethel in Milan as she requested and began traveling around the world with her as much as he possibly could. He had to protect his good friend Ethel.
Ethel was even more beautiful in person. Wow! Ethel really changed! Jughead was astounded by how beautiful Ethel had become. After Jughead met Ethel in Milan during fashion week, he pounced on her in his passion for her. They had a very fun-filled week of wild and amazing sex. Ethel loved it. She could not walk or sit down without pain for a week after that first week. She could not stop smiling, though. She had been in love with Jughead Jones since they met as teens. Jughead now traded his passion for food to a passion for Ethel. And it was a very passionate relationship. When Ethel had told Betty about their amazing week together, Betty squealed in pleasure, “Hey E, let’s double date when you come to Riverdale”, Betty was thrilled her friend finally got her man.
“Sure Betty,” Ethel said, doubtfully. Jughead had told her about Archie's infidelities. Ethel knew that Betty already had loads of books filled with her designs from the time she could write. Betty was a genius with a needle and thread. Betty always made the greatest outfits for her girlfriends over the years. Sometimes giving items for gifts, or selling them for extra cash. Ethel also wanted her friend to get away from Archie. She knew Betty was not happy being with Archie, and was bored with her life. Betty would never admit it to anyone, but Ethel knew her very well.
“Betty, ditch that dull teaching job and let’s design clothes together like we always wanted to.”
“Oh, Ethel, I can't. I would have to travel, and Archie wouldn't like it.” This was so true, because just like back in High School, Archie was very jealous of anyone who took Betty’s attention away from him. He would never allow Betty to travel without him. Ethel greatly disliked Archie, she did not want to go anywhere with him.
Betty even created a men's clothing line. They were very sexy, masculine clothes, shirts with the tops unbuttoned, and no ties for her men. She created tight pants that showed off a man's butt or how he was hanging, or not, in the front. Her men had to be muscular, tall, with green or brown eyes. All her colors were for dark haired men-tall, dark, handsome smoking hot men. Betty would spend hours sketching different styles of men’s wear- swim wear, clothes a rock star would wear, gothic and punk, sleepwear, or casual wear as well. Betty drew them all.
Strangely, they never seemed to suit red haired men

There were times when Archie seemed like he still loved Betty and he would act devoted and she felt happy. It would never last long though. Nothing seemed
the same for them after the miscarriage. Nothing Betty did pleased him: he complained about her looks, her cooking, how boring married life was. In fact, he
enjoyed seeing the hurt looks on his face. It made his feel less guilty when he was unfaithful.
Each dig was a stab in her heart and she retreated into herself in her misery. She tried harder to please him, but nothing worked. Betty would not share these
things with anyone but Jughead or Ethel because she knew they would not judge or say ‘I told you so’. She did not want her family to know how unhappy Archie
was making her. But her parents knew. Everyone could see how unhappy Betty looked. Once Betty saw signs of Archie’s cheating, she refused to get pregnant
again: even though he didn’t want kids either. It was a unspoken mutual agreement to not have anymore children.
Betty still loved Archie, so she bore his infidelities and verbal abuse in silence; painful, gut wrenching silence. Her parents had tried to talk to her about him, but
if anyone had even hinted at her leaving him, Betty would be angry and avoid the person for a length of time. So it was a taboo subject. For nine years, she
suffered, saying nothing to Archie about his treatment of her, until the day she observed him in front of the Riverdale Motel embracing Cheryl Blossom, that is. That
was the day her love for Archie died. Her heart died too.
When he arrived home that evening, after she saw him with Cheryl, Betty stood there shooting murderous looks at him. She looked at him, with distaste in her eyes, but he didn’t notice. He was feeling great after his torrid love session with Cheryl, and was ready for his dinner.
Betty had suspicions he had been cheating on her for a long while, but she had no concrete proof. Now she had proof and it hurt her to her core. She saw them
wrapped in each other’s arms and kissing like lovers, on her way home from the State college where she was an English Professor.
“Hi Hon, what’s for dinner?” he asked her after giving her a peck on the check.
“Archie, I saw you and Cheryl kissing today!”
“Come on baby. It wasn’t what you thought. Cheryl was upset and I was comforting her. I would never cheat on you!” he explained as he tried to pull her into his arms.
“Stop lying, damn you! You two were leaving a sleazy motel!” She pushed him away as he tried to kiss her again. She could smell Cheryl’s perfume on him.
Betty did not wear Eau Du Soir. She had forgiven him so many other times because she didn’t have any evidence and didn’t want to believe what everyone had
been trying to tell her.
There were the late nights ‘at work’ stories, she found lipstick on his collar that was not the pale pink or red shades she favored, strange perfume on his shirts,
and even lacy panties left in their car. She had loved Archie for so long, and wanted their marriage to work: but she drew the lines at sharing him with other
women. She was devastated at his betrayal and wanted to get away from him before she killed him. He would not know it, but it was the last time they would live
and sleep in the same bed as man and wife. She was leaving him after he left for work in the morning. She called Ehtel and decided to take her up on her offer to go into designing with her, start their own company and be famous. "It's time to do you, Bets" Ethel said, happy she was leaving Archie at last. This took nine years to come. "Hurry and come out hee, irl. I'm ready to get started!" ethel was excited, abd afraid Betty would change her mind.
"I'm ready Ethel. I'm taking the train tomorrow"
Betty had a huge amount of money stashed away in a secret bank account due to her lucrative investments with the help of Jughead and
Ethel. Betty felt that Archie did not need to know about these accounts because they were funded with her own money. Betty did not want to have drama
with Archie because she was leaving him, and she was not sure she would be able to leave him if he begged her to stay. Many times before she had decided to
leave him, but one look in his baby blue eyes, and she stayed. Archie had a knack for guessing he had gone too far and would become a loving husband,
reassuring her of his love and she’d forget about wanting to leave him: but not this time. She was determined to leave him now, for the last time. She would leave
him a note, her wedding rings, and the keys to the car and the house. She was devastated, dejected, and even felt defeated. She was upset over his adultery with so many women, many of whom she knew.
It’s funny; I always thought he would cheat on me with Ronnie. Cheryl can have him. Thank God I lost the baby, so there’s no children involved, Betty thought bitterly. She didn’t know that Cheryl hated her because Betty broke her brother’s heart a long time ago by marrying Archie. She loved sleeping with Archie because she knew how much it would hurt Betty if she ever found out about it. She was hurting Betty to avenge her brother’s misery. She did not care to stop seeing Archie even though Jason had married Veronica and was happy now.
Betty knew she was not the beauty she once was. Almost a decade of marriage to Archie had taken the spark out of her eyes, the shine out of her hair, and the glow from her skin. Betty did not look like the angel anyone remembered now. She looked older than her twenty-eight years, and felt old and broken. She had enough of feeling that way and wanted her life back. The Andrews marriage was over.
