Black Canary smiled as she drove her newly fixed-up motorcycle back to her apartment. A little gift from Zatanna before she had to return to the Tower of Fate and report in to her partner. She could have kissed that wonderful magician for this, magicking her motorcycle to be repaired and able to run smoother than it had ever done so before. Truly, it was one of the greatest gifts she could have ever asked for, and she never even really asked for it. She WANTED to, mind you, but had Zatanna not learned of the wreck that was her bike, she would've kept it to herself, not wanting to ask such a favour.
Pulling around the corner to where her garage was, Dinah immediately spotted a late-teens Goth boy running out of it, looking rather panicky. "HEY!"
The boy either didn't hear her or didn't care, running like a demon was after him. Deciding on the better of options, Dinah chose to park her motorcycle in the garage, then make her way into her apartment. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and she couldn't tell that anything was missing. Her eyes widened, however, as she heard sobbing coming from the bedroom, remembering that Raven was still home. Looking to the door, she did in fact see the girl curled up in a ball on the bed, looking VERY dis-shelved and weeping.
"Rachel?" Dinah exclaimed, walking to the bedroom. "Rachel, what hap-"
Before she could make it to the bedroom, the door was coated in black energy and shut in Black Canary's face, Rachel crying on the other side. "GO AWAY!"
"Rachel, please open the door!" Dinah yelled, knocking on the door. "Talk to me! What did that boy do to-"
"NOTHING!" Raven screamed, Dinah hearing something slam against the door from the other side. "LEAVE ME ALONE!"
Black Canary opened her mouth to say something, only for Oracle's voice to sound over the comm link in her ear. "Black Canary, come in."
Dinah grit her teeth in frustration, walking away from the door. "Dinah here! What's up?"
"Huntress and Batwoman are at the docks," Barbara explained. "We think the shipment of chemicals from Wayne Enterprises has finally arrived. Think you could give them a hand?"
Dinah hesitated for a second before answering, weighing her options as she looked back and forth from the garage door to the bedroom door. "...Negative. I've got a situation at home."
"What's going on?" Barbara asked, sounding concerned.
"Something's wrong with Rachel," Dinah explained. "I came home, there was a boy leaving just before I got in, and now Raven's locked herself in the bedroom and won't tell me what's wrong."
"...Understood," Oracle replied. "I'll let Huntress and Batwoman know. If anything changes, call me."
"Got it, Canary out," Di responded before walking back to the door. She knew that with Raven's powers, there was no way she could force her way in. Regardless, she wasn't leaving until they talked, and if that meant parking her ass in front of the bedroom door until Rachel came out, then that's what she was going to do.
"Understood, Oracle," Batwoman said, crouched on the ledge of a roof overlooking the port. "Huntress and I will deal with this alone. Batwoman out."
"Dinah's a no-show?" Hel asked, sitting next to the Dark Knightess.
"Seems she has trouble of her own," Kate replied.
"Ah, great," Helena muttered, "just the two of us then."
The two looked ahead to the bay. Sure enough, the ship was on its way and would be docking within fifteen minutes. All they had to do was sit and wait until they got ready to take the stolen chemicals out. Now normally, Huntress knew to keep quiet on stake-outs. However, they were pretty far off from them, and there was something on her mind she'd been wanting to ask Kate about for a while now.
"Hey, BW?" Hel whispered. "I gotta ask, about our situatio-"
Batwoman groaned, knowing this was coming eventually. "For the last time, I was not trying to play sexual predator on you guys."
"...Um, I wasn't gonna say that," Huntress responded. "When I suggested that before, I was kidding. I know you wouldn't do that, I'm not that homophobic."
Kate winced a little, but tried to hide it under her mask. "...Oh. I'm sorry."
"It's cool," Hel waved it off. "Anyway, I was asking about Raven. Does it ever bother you that one of our friends is a half-demon?"
"Not really," the Dark Knightess answered. "You?"
"No," Huntress said with a sigh, "and THAT'S what bothers me."
"The fact that you aren't bothered by having a half-demon friend bothers you?" Batwoman asked, confused.
Hel rubbed her arm. "A little. It's just, I was raised Catholic. My parents taught me to stay away from demons and devils and stuff, that they were evil. And I'm just wondering, am I so desensitized by everything that it just doesn't bother me? I'm not saying I should treat Raven like evil incarnate-"
"Although she technically IS one of Trigon's children," Kate pointed out. "But I do get what you mean. Best thing I can say is that accepting Raven doesn't mean you flushed your whole belief system down the drain. It just means that you're learning there are exceptions to some rules."
Helena nodded, taking it all in. Much as Katherine could be a stick in the mud, she was glad to have her around as a team-mate, maybe even a friend. Still, she realised as a mischievous grin spread across her lips, that didn't mean she couldn't do a little playful prodding.
"...So how many times DID you check out my ass when I wasn't watching?" she joked.
"I will Batarang you in the side of the head, Bertinelli," Batwoman threatened, albeit with a tiny grin to let Helena know she knew she was kidding.
Dinah sighed, sitting with her back against the bedroom door. Rachel still hadn't said anything, but she could hear her in there as she wept and rocked in her bed. Di just couldn't quite figure out what was wrong, and yet something in the back of her head was nagging at her, telling her that the answers lied with who that boy was that ran out of the garage before she came home.
"Rachel, please talk to me," Dinah asked softly. "Who was that boy?"
"No one," Rachel replied, her voice sounding hoarse from crying. "Just...a boy I met."
Suddenly, Dinah's mind allowed her to finally think back. That boy. She'd seen him before, a week ago. He was the Goth boy that Rachel had been dancing with at the club before Jack attacked. So, as she concluded in her head, him and Rach must've started seeing each other, leading to them getting together tonight when she'd been out on patrol, eventually arriving at her apartment. At this thought, Dinah's mind raced back to what she'd seen of Rachel when she came in: Her eyes had been red from crying for what had to have been for a while, despite the boy having just left a minute prior, her hair was a mess, and her clothes looked rather hastily put on. Suddenly, Black Canary's eye twitched at what might have happened.
"...Rachel, did that boy hurt you?" Di demanded, trying to sound calm as rage over what might have happened raised inside of her.
"NO!" Raven yelled, coughing from yelling too loud. "He...He didn't hurt me! H-He wouldn't even touch me after...I-I mean, he didn't hurt me, okay?"
Now Dinah was REALLY confused. If that boy didn't hurt her, then why was she crying? Had he said something? Done something? It was then that Di started to analyse what Rachel had said, about how he wouldn't touch her after something had happened. She then remembered how panicked the boy had looked when he ran out, like a rodeo clown on his first night as the big daddy of all bulls came barrelling out of chute #9...and that's when the pieces started coming together.
"Rach, the boy," Diana started to say.
"Freddie," Rachel interrupted. "His name's Freddie."
"Okay," Di went on, a little gentler. "Did Freddie run away because something scared him?"
Rachel didn't answer, so Dinah kept pressing. "Rachel, please. I'm not just your team-mate, I'm your friend. Please tell me the truth: Did something happen to scare Freddie?"
Instead of an answer, the black energy around the door faded away. Opening the door, Dinah walked in to find Rachel sitting on the edge of the bed, hugging a Twilight Sparkle doll, scooching over to let the blonde sit next to her. Smiling a little, Dinah did just that, careful not to do anything that went over what Rachel wanted to allow. She opened her mouth to speak, but was quickly cut off by her blue-haired friend.
"We were fooling around, on your bed," Rachel admitted. "I told myself I shouldn't be, that it could lead to bad...and that we shouldn't be doing that on your bed, but we did it anyway. I wasn't even thinking of it. The whole way through, I'd completely forgotten it was there, until he started touching me, and..."
Rachel stopped, starting to choke up again, to which Dinah took over. "Wait, he touched you, and found something you'd forgotten about?"
A quick nod. "What was it? A scar or something?"
Rachel shook her head. "A pimple, or maybe a rash?"
Another no. "...Wait, was it some kind of left-over on your body? Like, part of your demon half that's visible on your skin?"
Rachel squirmed a little. "So like, maybe a tail, or horns, or-"
Suddenly, Dinah's eyes went wide. It was as if realisation was a flashbang that had just been thrown against her head, as a flashback of the day they first met started to ring through...
Rachel sighed, leaning back. "...As I was starting to tell you before, Trigon has sired many children, but there were seven of us who possessed large portions of his power, specifically the ability to influence one of the seven deadly sins in the hearts of men. He called us 'The Sons of Trigon'."
"...Um, except you're clearly a girl," Huntress pointed out. "How can you be called 'The Sons of Trigon', which FYI, real original name, if one of you is a girl?"
Raven blushed slightly, looking away. "...I'd rather not discuss it at this moment."
And again, a few days later...
"Oh, dammit, I forgot to get a towel!" Raven cursed. "Where are they again?"
"In the closet just across from the bathroom!" Black Canary replied. "Hang on, I'll bring one i-"
"NO, that's okay!" Rachel quickly shouted, Dinah watching as the closet door opened and a towel levitated to the bathroom. "Don't mind me, I'm perfectly fine!"
And what had she just said a few minutes ago?
"...Rachel, did that hurt you?" Di demanded, trying to sound calm as rage over what might have happened raised inside of her.
"NO!" Raven yelled, coughing from yelling too loud. "He...He didn't hurt me! H-He wouldn't even touch me after...I-I mean, he didn't hurt me, okay?"
Dinah blinked, the truth hitting her like a ton of bricks. She looked to Rachel, who was looking down in shame, knowing that Dinah had figured it out: Why she kept to herself so much, and was so shy about her body. Seeing her like this, Di wanted to cry, and immediately pulled the teen into a hug.
"Rachel, no!" Di exclaimed. "That doesn't change...It doesn't change who you are, and it's NOTHING to be ashamed of, do you understand?"
"Oh, please!" Rachel cried, dropping the pony doll and clinging to Dinah. "You can say that, but you? You're beautiful, all woman! Me? I'm some circus freak. Come see the half demon from another dimension! And as an added bonus, her clashing DNA gives her the extra freak value of being a hermaphrodite!"
"You are NOT a freak!" Dinah yelled, cupping Rachel's face. "You're different, that's all. Lots of people are. When I was born, I had to be taken to my own room in the hospital, because my cries would keep breaking the glass and hurting the other babies' ears. When I grew up as a kid, I had to change schools after bullies picked on me until I cried and ended up putting them in the hospital. It took YEARS to learn to control my voice."
"But that's something you can control," Rachel said between sobs, "that you can make go away when you don't need it. I can't make THIS go away."
"You don't NEED to," Dinah insisted, running her fingers through Rach's hair softly. "You're not some horrible clashing of two worlds. You're the best of both."
Rachel bit her lip, trying to think of something, anything to say. Finding nothing, she just clung to Dinah, sobbing into her chest. And Dinah, the Black Canary, the one who could make grown men cry for their mothers, gently rocked her and whispered soothing words in her ear.
The rather rotund captain of the ship frowned as only a pair of men came aboard. He had expected a much larger crew to be waiting in the harbour when they arrived to take the shipments they'd 'acquired' from Gotham City a little over a month ago. He was glad he was being paid as well as he was for this, otherwise he'd have dumped those stolen chemicals overboard the second they got out to sea.
"Where're the goods?" one of the two men asked.
The captain scowled. "Where's my money?"
The quiet one of the two men held up a briefcase and opened it. The captain took a good look. Sure enough, it was the money they'd settled on, plus a little extra for added expenses and hassle. He grinned, hiking a thumb over his shoulder at a few barrels under a tarp. Just as the two men started to walk over to it, an arrow pierced the briefcase, releasing a smokescreen from the arrowhead. As the three men coughed and hacked from the smoke, the captain's skeleton crew ran forward, only to be brought down by a pair of shadows that came down from the sky. As the smoke cleared, the Captain found his crew and his two 'business partners' out cold, and was face to face with two women in costume, one bearing the mark of the bat on her chest. The sight of that alone made him fall onto his backside, backing away.
"S-Stay back!" he warned, reaching into his vest to pull a gun, only to have it kicked away by Batwoman. He was then hauled up by his collar into the air by the Dark Knightess, who glared seemingly into his soul with her gaze.
"The police will be very interested to know of your cargo, and the deal you just agreed to," Batwoman declared. "Now, you have a choice: Do you want to be conscious when they get here, or not?"
"Please say 'Not'," Huntress remarked, cracking her knuckles for added 'bad cop' effect.
As the two continued to put the fear of God into the clunky captain, the man holding the briefcase started to get back up. Just as Huntress felt the motion behind her, whirling around with her crossbow, it was knocked away with ease as the man threw his arm forward, the briefcase turning into a deep brown substance that slammed into her and knocked her to the deck. Batwoman dropped the captain and immediately swung an adhesive gel Batarang at the man, only for the gel that imploded from the Batarang to be absorbed harmlessly.
"Sorry, doesn't work on me," the man said with a grin, suddenly growing into a giant brown mass of mud with arms and legs. Batwoman assumed a fighting stance as her foe grew to his full size, a pair of yellow eyes forming in his new, misshapen head.
"Clayface," she muttered as the muddy-looking man chuckled menacingly at her.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: DUN-DUN-DU-Nevermind, I've done this too often. lol So yeah, those are the two big secrets: Rachel is actually a hermaphrodite, and the man behind the theft of the chemicals is really Clayface. How and why did he pull this off? You'll find out next chapter. As for Raven, I decided a while ago that I wanted to have a superhero be a hermaphrodite in my fanfic universe, and Raven seemed like the one that made the most sense. And before anyone asks, no, I do not have any kind of pro- or anti-religious agendas with my fanfiction. I was just writing a scenario where Helena and Katherine could bond a bit.
Anyway, check in next time as the Birds of Prey take on Clayface. Ja né!
