While Jason was stewing in his anger, he thought of other things that were not going his way.
He began to think about how Betty still refused the expensive gifts he tried to give her-
'Who refuses jewelry for God's sake? He tried to give her diamond earrings, emerald hair barrettes, furs hats, even a leather coat.  Betty wouldn’t hear of it.
She even refused him wanting to take her shopping.
Jason did note that Betty would always be wearing some trinket that Reggie gave her, like a beautiful silk scarf, hair ribbons made of silk with feathers and fake pearls.
Betty seemed to love that silly stackable bracelet set that she said Reggie  told her the colors matched her eyes. reminded him of her eyes, What bullshit!
Betty always wore the barrettes , pony tail holders, belts, stuffed animals, or just flowers.
What Jason didn't understand was that Reggie knew Betty’s tastes.
She was not for all the riches and glamor. She could not be bought.
Jason had not earned Betty's love.
He realized this tonight.
And how it rankled.
All of these thoughts were going on in Jason's mind, while dancing with Veronica.
Jason was shooting daggers at Reggie. If looks could kill....
Veronica didn't like Jason very well, but she was here to help Reggie save Betty from this creep. He was very strange, even i he was rich and handsome. Something off
Jason made her skin crawl.
Veronica always liked Reggie to bring her to these high society gigs. She liked the envious looks when she arrived on his arm. Plus he always had money. But she realized hat Reggie and Betty belonged together. Now Veronica could have Archie for herself. But there were times she did miss the spice of dating Reggie.
Veronica was very glad when the music changed. She could escape from this weirdo.
Veronica couldn’t bear Jason being so close to her.
Veronica asked Betty if she and Reggie could sit with them. The 'Club' was packed tonight
All tables were  full. They could have had a table set up, but they didn't want to.
They wanted to sit with Betty and Jason.
“Of course Ronnie” Betty said. Jason's ears was red, but he said nothing. Just glared at them.
Reggie had very quickly arranged to get seats set up at their table.
"That dress is as gorgeous as you are Babe" Reggie said when he returned to the table.
He wanted Jason to  hear him. Betty laughed at him.
“ Oh Reggie, this old thing?”   It was something Ronnie would say.
They laughed then – just the three of them, not Jason.
He was being very anti social.
Reggie, Ronnie and Betty were talking about the upcoming festivities for the graduates, the school gossip, or just about the weather. They basically ignored Jason.
Veronica said. “You should be a designer, not a journalist, Betty. I hate to admit it, but you do make the nicest clothes. If you were famous, I'd wear them.”
“Hey, I could be a journalist and fashion designer. Or I could design fashions for journalists?” They laughed some more.
They were just being silly having a good time
Jason didn’t get the joke. He just wanted these two townies to leave.
‘God Reggie looks hot ’ Betty was thinking.
Veronica and Jason saw her furtive looks at Reggie, who was doing his own share of looking.
Neither was aware they were ignoring their partners.
No one wore clothes like Reggie Mantle. He could be a model , a movie , or a rock star.
Betty's thoughts were all jumbling together.
‘What is the matter with me?’ Betty was asking herself.
She's danced with Mantle a thousand times. But now they are all grown up.
Reggie has definitely changed this past year.
Betty found herself really looking at the 'rat fink', as she used to call him when they were little, because he was a terror.
But lately, she sensed something different, a kindness in him, and he was always there when she needed him.
But he had so many girls after him. It was too much for her to deal with.
She had enough of that when she dealt with Archie.
Betty would not have sex with anyone without marriage.
That was the way she felt about those things.
She was old fashioned, but so what?
It didn’t mean she didn’t have sexual feelings and desires though.
Betty didn't understand girls that had casual sex as if they changed their shoes.
It seemed like another way to buy a guy’s love.
They did not respect the girls either. Betty heard how the guys talked about the girls they slept with!
Jason watched them, anger smoldering inside him. It was building up to almost a boiling point.
Jason wanted Betty to himself, no friends around them.
He wanted all of her time and thoughts to be on him, and him alone.
Reggie asked Betty to dance, before Jason could, again.
Jason hotly refused, and grabbed Betty's hand and ran to the dance floor.
Jason didn't care about appearances now.
“Oh not again ,you shit!” Jason was actually hissing.
Reggie just smirked at him, further antagonizing the guy
“Betty, I want you to go steady with me. I’ll treat you good. I love you. Please”. He said while they were dancing. Pulling her close to him, smelling her hair.
Reggie was watching them intensely.
“Jason, I like you, but I’m not ready for an exclusive relationship right now. I told you this.
I just broke up with Archie. I want to play the field for a while. Please give me some time”
Betty was getting tired of this conversation. Jason smothered her.
Her answer angered Jason so much that his knuckles turned white, as he clenched them.
He squeezed her around her waist, very , very hard. Actually felt like he was pinching her.
"Jason, you’ re hurting me!” she whispered harshly to him, which made him loosen his grip.
She wondered if there would be bruising when he squeezed her.
“Sorry Betty” he said, appearing sheepish and boyish.
Jason then asked her to be his date for the prom.
Betty had forgotten to tell him Reggie was her date.
“Sorry Jay, Reggie already asked me”
"When?” he said.
”And you agreed to go with him? You didn’t even consider my wishes first?!”
“Sure I did Jay, but not you or anyone else owns me. I do as I like” she said, getting real angry now. How dare he be so possessive!
Betty broke away from Jason and went back to the others.
“Can you please take me home Reggie?” She asked.
”Sure babe. Ready when you are"
Reggie went to get Betty and Veronica’s wraps.
Jason had come behind her.
“Why are you leaving with them? I’ll take you home. Let’s not cause a scene. I’m sorry Betty”
When Reggie returned, Betty told him Jason will take her home.
“You sure Betty?” Reggie asked
“Yeah she’s sure Mantle. Good night !” with that, Jason pulled Betty, roughly it seemed, out of the 'Club'.
Reggie started to go after them, but Veronica stopped him.
"Let them go Reggie. I think you'll only make it worse". she said, not certain if she was doing the right thing by stopping Reggie
Reggie and Veronica looked at them, helpless and not liking Jason’s behavior.
There was definitely something wrong with that guy
