Chapter 8
Somewhere along the line things had gone horribly wrong, not that he had expected anything less. Leo’s decision to work with Karai had been a sketchy one at best and now they were surrounded. Karai had just finished telling him to prepare for death, that was so not what he signed up for.
Hun was leveling a large weapon at them, it seemed he’d rather be someone else’s bitch than risk not having any power at all. The shuriken flew through the room and struck the gun before he even had time contemplate his next move, Raph had finally decided to quit sulking.
“I did some thinkin’ .... an I decided that I was bein’ an idiot”
Mike was sure there was more to the explanation but it had taken him a minute to get there.
“And you came to that conclusion all by your lonesome?” He questioned his brother sarcastically.
“I may have had some help” Raph replied nonchalantly.
He had expect his master, the old rat had always been the only person who could reason with Raph, it wasn’t. She dropped into the room smoothly and he felt his chest tighten, she had come back for him. No not just came back but she had brought Raph with her or maybe it was the other way around but either option made him almost too ridiculously happy to concentrate on the fight.
It was a hell of a brawl, guns and swords, bombs and lasers. Mikey was busy teasing a few stray foot they were easy game and he always had enjoyed a little mockery with his work out. He would count the next moment as one of the most contradicting of his life, he would blame himself for all the evils it would make possible but he wouldn’t trade it or the things it would mean for him for anything in the world.
He never heard anything in fact he didn’t even see it coming until her hands were on him half pushing half throwing him to safety, the grenade struck the ground paused just a second and then exploded. She flew back like a wounded rag doll slamming into the far corner.
“A..” He managed to stop her name before it left his mouth. Smoke clouded his vision as he tried to make his way over to her. Some one blocked his path, he didn’t bother trying to identify them as foot or dragon he just lashed out trying to clear his path.
A minute or two had passed by the time he cleared the smoke his stomach tied in knots. When his eyes finally came to rest on her she was on her knees near where she landed holding the broken halves of her mask. He rushed towards her instantly noticing the various burnt smells, her suit was torn and burnt but she on the other hand looked completely unharmed.
He had only asked once for her to remove her mask she had been harsh and angry and had yelled so loud the whole city could hear, he hadn’t seen her again for days. He looked down at the broken mask in her hands, she would look up when he got close enough and he would see her face, she would be forced to show it to him. He didn’t like that thought.
**
“Don’t look up” a familiar voice called to her, her ears rung and the words echoed she winced being blown up sucked.
She was normally not one for commands but this time she chose to obey without an argument as she started down at the halved mask, there was no way she would make it out of her without someone seeing her face.
Just as her thoughts were turning grim a strip of orange fabric came to rest across her ruined mask. She blinked and stared at it a moment it was his mask, he was giving her his mask. She let her own ruined mask slip from her grasp and quickly set about tying the new one on, he had the perfect opportunity to see her face and he had flat out avoided it.
She finished the knot, his mask wasn’t as big as hers but rolled out a little it did the trick. She looked up and it occurred to her that she had never seen Mike without his mask before, he was looking down at her with an expression of concern he offered her a hand and pulled her to her feet.
“You ok?” He asked softly his hands still resting on the back of her arms.
She shook her head lightly trying to clear the cobwebs, she wasn’t hurt but the blast had literally knocked the sense out of her for a moment.
“M’fine” She said trying to dismiss his concerns.
He had more to say she could read it in his eyes and the way he held himself, the way he was still holding her.
“Lets go” She said sharply , his sentiment for her was a little to much to deal with right now. He swallowed his words and nodded turning to lead the way out.
**
He had spilt from his brother after exiting from the building revealing to her for the first time that he lived underground. He had insisted on seeing her home not that he was worried, once he had the time to look at her properly he noticed that she wasn’t so much as bruised or scratched in fact only her clothes told the tale of the grenade.
When they reached her building he paused unsure of what to say, the danger was passed and he had so many questions. The most prominent of which was how she managed to survive the blast without a scratch, he wouldn’t ask her though he wasn’t in the mood to argue with her.
He snapped out his daze only to realize she hadn’t stopped with him.
“You comin’?” her voice called from several buildings over.
He smiled and ran after her, maybe she really was developing a soft spot for him. She lead the way across a few more roofs and then down into street full of brownstones. He followed her as she swept neatly onto the ledge of the second story, the back of the house was very close to the building behind it but there was enough room to stand comfortably.
He peered down to observe the tiny alley bellow to his relief there was a manhole about half way down, that would make the trip home much easier.
“Here” Her voice stirred him from his thoughts. He glanced up to see that she was holding his mask out to him, he stared at it a moment unable to move. He could barely breath, he hadn’t asked her for this and she was offering it freely. He took a deep breath and turned to look her in the face, she was stunning.
He starred into the familiar eyes and then wandered over the unfamiliar terrain of her face. She was so much younger now without the mask, he had pictured her as a mature woman but he could now see she was still a teenager. He reached out to take the mask from her but stopped half way.
“Keep it” He said softly “Incase you ever miss me” He added with a cheeky smile.
She smirked at his comment he was obviously trying to relieve the tension of the moment
“ Night turtle” She said lightly before sweeping into the window and closing the curtain behind her.
“Night babe” He said to the closed pane of glass before turning and heading for home.
