Superman lied back on the ground with a painful sigh. Chris was standing by the hole Rellek had made in the wall of the building, peering out of it. When he saw that Rellek and Trevor were gone he made his way carefully over to Superman who was still lying on the ground. He kneeled down by his wounded friend.
“Superman…” he said, placing a hand on broken man’s chest.
Superman looked up at him. “I’ll be ok,” he said, touching Chris’s arm. Chris helped him to his feet walked him back into the building through the giant hole in the wall he’d come out from and lead him back into the room on the ground level they’d been in earlier that day. Superman laid himself down on the floor there to continue his rest.
“I’ll just let you rest here now. You look like you need it,” said Chris, forcing a smile. “I’ll be back later to check on you, ok?”
Superman nodded at him, managing to smile just a little. Then Chris got up and left the room.
A few hours later Superman got up and made his way back down to the basement with his wounds still in the process of healing. He walked over to the videotape that he found was still lying in roughly the same place he had kicked it to earlier. He bent down and picked it up and then he carried it back upstairs with him. He walked back into the room he’d been resting in a few moments ago and went over to the TV/VCR that was still sitting there on an old filing cabinet next to the wall. He put the tape in which caused the TV to turn on automatically, then he pushed the play button and stood back to see what was on it.
It was Jane. She was sitting slouched over on the floor of a dark room with her hands chained up around a large pipe that was protruding up out of the floor in front of her. The person holding the camera stood many feet above her and the camera wobbled a bit as the camera moved in closer to where she sat. He heard Jane whimper as she saw Rellek approaching her. “Saaay Cheeese,” Rellek drawled at her from behind the camera, causing her to scream and try to move away as he moved in closer. “Please, don’t hurt me,” she said chokingly through her intermittent sobs. “Saaay hiii to Suuupermaaan,” he coaxed her. “Superman, help me,” Jane cried as she glanced around the room. “I can’t reach you down here. It’s cold…and damp…” Rellek started laughing.
Superman could tell that she was trying to give as much information about her surroundings that she could but it wasn’t much to go on.
“Ohhh kaay, saaay bye-bye now,” Rellek told her as he zoomed the camera in for a close-up of Jane’s tormented face. She looked into the camera for a moment with tears streaming down her face and then she put her head down between her arms and cried some more. Then the video was over and there was nothing but static on the screen.
“Oh…my…god,” Superman muttered aloud and without bothering to shut the TV off he slumped down to the floor in front of it and hung his head close to his knees with his face in his hands. How could he have allowed his happen?
“…he FINDS me. He ALWAYS finds me…” Trevor’s voice echoed in his mind.
Superman realized now that Rellek must have known were Trevor was all along. Rellek had probably begun surveilling this building the very night Trevor was brought here, planning his attack very carefully. He didn’t just want Trevor back, he had wanted to punish Superman for even having the nerve to break into his home and take him away. Rellek had undoubtedly observed Jane walking to and from this building and then matched her face to the one he’d seen on the tape that Superman had made for him not realizing what a huge mistake it was. He’d certainly bitten off more than he could chew.
“I shouldn’t be here…You’re making a mistake…,” he remembered Trevor saying. “I told you this was a mistake. But you didn’t listen to me.”
Superman had a sinking feeling that, in a way, he’d brought this on himself. He’d called Rellek out…bringing his attention to him and two of his good friends. Now Rellek knew both of them and even if he did let Jane go he would always know where to find her, and Chris, no matter where they went.
When Chris came back almost an hour later, Superman was still sitting in the same position in front of the TV blaring with static. Chris walked over to him and knelt down beside him, placing his hands on both of Superman’s slumped shoulders.
“Superman…what’s wrong?” he asked.
“He’s got her!” Superman screamed on the verge tears, making Chris jump. “The tape…” he said, pointing at the TV, “…she’s on the tape…”
“Huh?” Chris muttered in a confused tone. He got up and started walking towards the TV.
“Noooooo!” Superman yelled at him as he grabbed his arm to hold him back. “Don’t,” he said, shaking his head back and forth. Then he got up on his feet and felt his neck, which was mostly healed up now. “He’s GOT her,” he reiterated.
“What…are we going to do?” Chris asked with a worried expression.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Superman replied, turning away from him and throwing his hands up in the air in frustration. “I don’t know where she is and she isn’t able to tell me. Besides…I doubt that Rellek would let me anywhere near her right now even if I did know where to find her.” Then he placed his hands on his hips and looked down to the floor. “Trevor…he saved me. Rellek was about to kill me…for sure this time…but Trevor got him off. I thought he’d run off to get away from both of us, but he came back. He came back to Rellek and got him to let me go…he saved my life.” Then he turned back to face Chris. “Maybe he can save her, too.”
“How did he get Rellek off of you?” asked Chris wonderingly.
“Rellek listens to him,” replied Superman hopefully. “At least sometimes he does, anyway. Maybe Trevor can get him to do it one more time, at least…for Jane.”
“I hope so,” said Chris. “It seems that he may be her only hope right now.”
