Stab the body and it heals, but injure the heart and the wound lasts a lifetime. Mineko Iwasaki
I was woken by the sound of my bedroom door slamming open. Before I could react, a shape in the darkness grabbed me and held me up against the wall. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realised who was wrapping their hand around my throat.
“Harvey?” I whimpered, trying not to cry. “Why are you doing this?”
“This is your fault.” He growled. “You did this to me.”
He was starting to cut off my air, and I was panicking. Reaching out, I managed to grab my lamp and slam it into his head. He dropped me, hitting the ground unconscious for a moment.
Not willing to waste my chance, I ran. I had to get to the study. Bruce had made sure the trapdoor in the cellar was closed up, and placed a hand scanner in my study to make it easier and more secure to get to the cave. I didn’t know where else to go, because I’d left my phone behind.
Harvey had clearly recovered quickly, because I heard him not far behind as I ran down the stairs to the bottom floor. Ducking into the study, I locked the door behind me then ran to the back wall.
I could hear him banging on the wooden door, and knew it wouldn’t be long before he broke through, so I hit the security alert button, causing metal to slam down around the whole room. Pressing my hand to the scanner under the desk, I dashed through the secret door and closed it behind me.
Sliding the metal guard across just in case, I burst into tears as I stumbled down the passage. I was hurting both inside and out, and I felt completely betrayed. I had no idea what was going on inside Harvey’s head, but clearly the attack had changed him.
Distracted by my hurt, I tripped and fell into the dirt. I managed to catch myself, but my hands scraped along the ground. As I picked myself up, starting to cry for what seemed like the thousandth time that week, I tried to ignore the blood that was slowly trickling out of the new cuts on my palms.
Going as fast as I could, but being more careful this time, I made my way down to the cave.
Pushing open the door, I almost fell onto the metal platform. Alfred must have heard me coming, because he was already close and caught me before I fell.
“Eve, are you alright?” He asked, helping me over to a chair.
“Harvey… In my house…” I wheezed, trying to catch my breath. “He attacked me.”
He nodded, pressing the emergency button on the desk. “I’m calling Bruce back, and will make sure the police come. Wait here, and I’ll go get the first aid kit.”
“I need to call Charlotte. Can I use your phone?”
He handed it over, then walked to one of the cabinets to get the kit. I dialled Charlotte’s number, hoping that she would pick up.
“Hello?” She asked sleepily.
“Charlotte, Harvey is in the house. I’m safe, but I don’t know if he’ll try to get into your cottage, so lock all the doors and windows and stay quiet.” I hesitated. “The police are coming, so just be careful.”
“Are you sure you’re safe?”
“Yes. I’m at Bruce’s. The safest place I could possibly be.”
Hanging up, I turned to Alfred.
“Head upstairs.” He took the phone back. “I’ll call the police and then help you.”
I did as I was told, sitting on the couch in the study. Alfred came up and cleaned off my hands, carefully wrapping them up.
“The police will be here soon. You’ll need to give them a statement.” He told me.
I nodded, watching him fuss over me. Exhausted and still shaking a little, I just wanted to go to bed and let someone else make the report.
Less than ten minutes later, the fireplace swung open and Bruce came running out. He sat down beside me, looking me over.
“What did he do to you?” He asked, touching my face. “Did he hurt you?”
I rubbed my neck, the feel of Harvey’s fingers still lingering on my skin. “He… choked me.”
Before we could talk more, Alfred returned with two policemen. The next hour was just me telling what had happened, being questioned, photographed and then questioned some more.
Obviously I wasn’t going to tell them that I ran through the secret passage to the batcave, so I told them I managed to get out a window on the first floor and run to Wayne Manor. It felt like forever, but they finally left.
“Come on, Eve. You need to get some sleep.” Bruce took my hand, and led me upstairs to the bedroom.
I jerked awake from a nightmare, crying out in fear. Sitting up, I looked around in panic like I thought Harvey was back in the room. The sun was way up, judging by how light the room was, so I figured it was about midday.
“Hey, I’ve got you.” Bruce sat up too, wrapping his arms around me softly. “You’re safe.”
I clung to his arm as I leaned against him. “I thought he was here again. He was so angry, Bruce. Told me it was my fault he got attacked.”
“Shh…” He whispered, gently rubbing my back. “He’s not here. I’m here, and I’m not going to let him hurt you.”
“You came.” I looked at him. “When I called you.”
He nodded, reaching over to the bedside table and picking up my phone. “I promised you I would be here if you needed me. While you were asleep, I also put a program on your phone so that you can alert me if you’re in danger. All you have to do is quickly press the lock button four times. It’ll buzz, and send an alert straight to me, and I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
I didn’t reply, just leaned in to kiss him. Every time he listened to my concerns and helped, it just made me fall in love with him all over again.
“I love you so much.” I sat back, running my fingers through his hair. “And I know that things haven’t been exactly smooth between us, but I’m certain that we can get through anything.”
He gently pushed me back down onto the bed, lying on his side next to me. “Is something bothering you? Aside from last night, that is.”
I shook my head, reaching up to touch his cheek. “Nothing in particular. Just, after everything that’s happened between and around us recently, I just wanted you to know that I’m always on your side.”
“Of course I know that, Eve.” He brushed some hair out of my face. “I love you, and I want you to tell me if there’s something wrong.”
“I’m fine, I promise.” I took hold of his hand, softly pressing a kiss to the tips of his fingers.
He traced my lips with his thumb, his blue eyes holding my gaze. I wanted to tell him that I thought I might be pregnant, but I couldn’t, not until I’d confirmed it for sure. I made a mental note to use the test as soon as I got home.
“There are things I need to get done.” I whispered. “I really should get home at some point today.”
“Do you want some breakfast before you go?” He asked, softly kissing me once.
I nodded. “Let me get changed and I’ll come down.”
He kissed me again, then headed off downstairs. I got up off the bed, changing into one of the outfits I’d left at his house. Things were really looking up, and I was feeling so much better about everything.
Walking down to the kitchen, I found Bruce pouring coffee. He looked up with a smile as I sat at the bench, and placed one down in front of me.
“How are your hands feeling?” He asked.
I unwrapped the bandages, finding that it wasn’t as bad as I thought. “They don’t hurt anymore, just feel a little tight. I know you’re going to go after him, but… don’t hurt him too much, please. He just had his whole life ripped away from him, and it is kind of my fault.”
He walked around to me, placing his hands either side of my face. “He could have really hurt you.”
“I know. I’m not saying you shouldn’t bring him in. He clearly needs help. Just please, do this for me.”
“Alright. I’ll do my best.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “I know he means a lot to you.”
I gave him a small smile, wrapping my arms around him. “You mean a lot to me. If you have to fight him, it’s more important that you come home safely. That’s the most important thing to me, and nothing else really matters.”
I kissed him, pulling him close between my legs. There were definitely important things I needed to get done, since my charity event was only a week away, but they could wait a little while longer. I just wanted to stay in his arms, where I was safe, for a few more minutes.
“I thought you wanted breakfast.” He whispered, pulling away slightly.
“Does that mean I have to let you go?”
He nodded, laughing. “But I wouldn’t stop you from kissing me one more time before you do.”
I pulled him in for a deep kiss, tangling my fingers in his hair. By the time we broke apart, we could barely breathe.
