"This one really does deserve a special end," The Thanagarian Governor frowns, "Considering how much trouble he caused us."
From everywhere around us, a presence makes itself known.
TIME TO TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE.
That sounds like it could be fun… A lot more fun than interacting with these damned aliens has been so far anyway… Time to remind them that other living beings are not their toys.
"Trouble?" I look at Chima. "They have no idea of what the word means, do they?"
"Not yet," Chima nods, "But they'll learn."
"You think?"
"We can teach them."
"Can you teach birds?" I ask casually, ignoring the splutters of rising indignation from around the room.
"Let's try it, and see?" Chima is irrepressible.
"What are you doing?" Nygma stares, "Be silent!" He's visibly frightened now.
"Yes, what ARE you doing?" The Thanagarian wonders.
"Oh," Chima gives him a sweet smile, "Just what we were born to do…"
A wave of her hand and the room is in uproar. All around us, those who were chained are free; while their self-proclaimed masters are collared and bound.
"Who ARE you?" The Governor demands, "WHAT are you?"
"Kin," I tell him, selectively increasing the gravity around the intruders until they are all forced to their knees.
"No… it's not possible, there were no Kin on this world! We checked."
"There WERE none, but we are here now." We tell him, the power flowing freely through both of us. The limitless power of the Other… There are other minds out there, far out, people like us, more Kin. We connect. They are us. We are them. We are Kin. All of us, and all one, whenever and wherever we want to be. Right now, Chima and I still want to be here.
"Release my people!" The Thanagarian blusters, not noticing the delay.
It was too fast for his feeble mind to comprehend, the distant others reassure us. We are watching. Have some fun with them, they owe you..
"Why?" The words come out of my mouth this time. "You didn’t plan on releasing mine."
"If you are truly Kin, then the humans are not your kind." The Governor protests.
"They are under our care," Chima advises. "You aren't supposed to be interfering in human evolution, and we are going to make sure that you don’t do it any more. One way, or another."
"There are thousands of us, and only two of you!"
"Yes, not very fair odds," I agree, "But we'll go easy on you – if you release everyone you captured right now. In fact, if you start running soon enough, we may not bother to follow you."
"You have no authority,"
"We have all the authority we need, it's you who don’t." We remind him.
"We'll fight you." He warns. Around the room others nod agreement.
"You already know what happens when you try that." My voice sounds louder than it normally does, as if I were not the only person speaking.
"We'll leave at once…" The Governor looks suddenly nervous.
"Smart thinking."
It's the work of a moment to free Kal, and heal him. I find I like the sensation. Who would have thought these hands could heal as easily as they harm?
Worried that he is needed elsewhere, Kal leaves, reassured that Chima and I can handle things here.
Does he realise yet that I am as much an agent of the changes as Chima? Perhaps, or maybe he is too stressed to care much at the moment? That will probably come later. Joy… From previous experience, having Kal suspicious of me is almost worse than knowing that he is hurting.
We will face whatever is to come, together… Chima reminds me that I am no longer that same lonely soul…
Power flows through me, it is strangely addictive. It is easy to see how such abilities could corrupt even the purest of beings, and I'm certainly not that. I recall the old saying about absolute power corrupting absolutely; someone certainly had that right. Still, the others are there to see that none of us ever misuses our gifts though, which is a comfort: I'd hate to think that I might turn into any sort of monster…
What else is left to be done? Remembering the collar, I reach up and wrap my fingers around it, ripping through the inch thick steel like so much cellophane. I wonder if this is how Kal feels when he uses his strength? I'd ask him, but he'll only get embarrassed, and it's not like we have any way of making a comparison. I feel a faint tingle in my head. Oh, yes, and there's still that damned implant, isn't there?
Chima's hand rubs over the area, undoing the damage and removing the already useless device. My body has matured now, and the implant was never going to be powerful enough to control one of us. Almost nothing can do that. No Kryptonite for Kin.
"What?" Nygma sounds frightened as he receives the biofeedback showing him that the device has failed, "You can't do that!"
"We just did," I point out.
"But you're…" He chokes on the words. All by himself, and with no help from us.
"Human? No, apparently not." I admit, "although if it's any consolation, I thought I was too…" I suddenly think of a few people who are going to give me some serious stick about that… Damn, I'm an alien! Kal is going to have a field day with this…
Chima grins, It's your fault for having been such a grumpy guts about it…
I thought you were on MY side?
Only when you need me…
How do you know I don’t need you now? I ask her silently.
Same way that you know you don’t.
Damn.
Ahh, poor baby.
Somehow it feels quite different when she says that, not that she's actually saying anything. I purposely suppress the bad memories - of other times when I've been called that. The others understand totally. Chima's hand latches around mine, in wordless comfort.
You could make me feel better? I suggest hopefully, feeling a definite tingle.
She grins, It's a wonder you haven't worn it down to a stub…
Oh, there's plenty left. I assure her. Way off in our minds, someone else laughs as I promise to demonstrate that to her later.
"Maybe we could at that?" She teases me with a come-hither glance.
"Now?" No time like the present. Especially for something nice.
"Yes."
"Do we take him with us?" I remind her that someone is with us, and watching. When is he ever not watching? Though I fancy that this time he is less optimistic about the eventual outcome. "Why did he react like that to me?" I ask. "I'm sure I never gave him the slightest encouragement."
"He sees a hint of our glory," She explains. "He can never be one of us, but like many of them he has the ability to sense our energy. We call to him, in a way that he cannot entirely resist. Moths and candles. Remember how you felt, when we were first together?"
"Oh." If that was what he was going through, then I suppose that some of his behaviour is understandable – even if I still find the outcome totally unacceptable.
"We can't really leave him here, can we," She points out. "The rest of the survivors will tear him to pieces if they get their hands on him."
I have a sudden image of red hair and green leaves. I have no idea if it came from me, or if it's a hint from someone else. What's the difference in the end?
"There is someone in this city who would appreciate his company. Providing we make a few changes…"
"Can we really do that?" She asks, sensing what I have in mind. "That feels a bit drastic…"
"Let's find out." I lock the force of my will on him, and although he struggles, he knows in his heart that he cannot escape us. He also knows he deserves this…
Lightly I place my hands on either side of his head. The energy that makes up his being is immediately apparent to me. Very carefully, I change a few things; a little tug here, a tweak there. Where the inspiration comes from I neither know nor care. His biology alters; obedient to my will. The changes in his chemistry should also serve to curb his… more unsavoury appetites…
"Green?" Chima tilts her head and examines the result.
"It works," I say. "Now, let's take him to the Park, and see if I'm right."
"And if you're not?"
"There's always room for another pot plant in the Orangery," I remind her. "A bit more tweaking and he could put down roots… If he does fruit it'll be lemons though… dry and sour."
"Beast!" Chima tickles me in the ribs and hugs me. She gives a wicked giggle.
"How do they make marmalade do you suppose?" I wonder aloud, laughing freely and joyously for the first time in I don’t know how long.
"You say the strangest things!" Chima tells me
"I suppose I do." I would only admit that to her.
She glances at me unashamed.
"And I suppose you always talk complete sense?" I ask. In return I receive a salacious wink.
"Only when I want to." She assures me.
Her hand is still in mine. Not that either of us needs to touch physically any more, with the connection between us fully open we are together wherever we may go, apart or not. It's nice though, feeling her fingers close around mine, feeling my fingers around hers.
"That's new."
"Is it?"
"It wasn’t so clear before."
"No, it wouldn’t have been," She agrees. "We're both nearly fully matured now."
"All grown up, huh?" I reach out, and catch her in my arms, passing on an inkling of what I really fancy doing for the rest of the afternoon. We've pretty much saved the planet, along with Humanity, surely we deserve a few hours down-time?
"Now that," She smiles, "Feels like an excellent idea."
From far away, I hear something. At first I don't even recognise that it's a voice. It takes a while longer before I understand what it's saying. As understanding dawns the blood almost freezes in my veins. No...
“…Bruce…" The voice is insistent now, worried, frantic even. "Bruce you have to wake up ... please, wake up...”
