I feel so stupid, no ridiculous!
How could I let him talk me into this? It was five o’clock in the evening, and I was parked in a very soft chair (let me tell you it is very comfortable, I could’ve fallen asleep if I weren’t so tense), on the 10th floor of ‘Mantle Corporation’, The MC for short. If only the building were just as short as the abbreviation.
Before I hung up with Reggie early this afternoon, he asked me to go on a second date with him, tonight. Mind you I haven’t even agreed to the first one. I’m starting to think that Reggie is all mixed up in the head like everyone else here. But since I had nothing better to do, and I didn’t want to spend another evening at home stuck with baby sitting, I agreed to the second. He wanted to have dinner. But how many dinner dates do you know start at five o’clock? *snort* unless your what? Five?
I didn’t wanna go back home and change so I just went to Ethel’s Hotel room until it was time for me to get ready and go. I just wore what I bought at the mall. I wore a lime green tube dress with strappy heels that matched them. He said not to wear anything to fancy.
I’ve forgotten how uptight Rat Mantle can be when he’s nervous. I wonder why the hell is he nervous? It’s just me. Unless he’s hiding something.
“Miss Cooper would you like some refreshments?” His secretary, Lisa asked politely. I’ve only been here for ten minutes and the minute I walked through the thick glass doors she’s been asking if I needed something. First it was the refreshments question (with whom she has asked again), then it was a pillow, after that it was some complimentary Mantle Corp gift basket. And boy was the thing huge! Now you know I couldn’t pass that up. Amber and Amerie will have a field-day with it, there were enough snacks in it to feed 5 people. (not including Jughead or Ethel.)
“I’m sorry for the delay. Mr. Mantle is in an important meeting, and couldn’t reschedule.” she explained.
“It’s ok.” I said. ’Then why did the idiot say to come here to his office? At five o’clock?!’ “And yes I’ll have…uh what do you have here anyway?”
“Well we have a wide selection, down in the cafeteria on the 2nd floor. And some vending machine’s on the twentieth.” She explained gaily.
My head was about to spin. “Uh…maybe I’ll just wait.” I replied.
“It’s no problem really.” she implored. “All I have in here is my small refrigerator. It’s got bottled water, and soda. Don’t you want some champagne?”
“In an office?” I asked completely baffled. “No that’s ok, I’ll take whatever soda you’ve got.”
“Are you sure?” she asked eagerly.
“Positive.” I answered, as she wheeled around quickly to go get the drinks. She was very energetic, she looked like she was still in college. Especially with her wide lenses reflecting the sunlight. (Yes I know, I turned down alcohol. I’m just full of surprises, thought you knew.)
“Do you have any sprite?”
“Yes!!” she answered jovially. Heh she’s easy to please.
I saw the double oak doors open, as she walked back to me with a can of soda. I saw a crowd of men and a few women walk out of the from the doors. I thanked Lisa for the soda, and watched her walk quickly to the glass entrance doors to open them for the people who were filing out of the boardroom.
I popped open my can of soda and slurped to oblivion. If I had a car I would’ve walked out with the crowd. But I was dropped off by a taxi. And I’d probably have to wait another 10 minutes for one to get here.
I saw the boardroom close and I still haven’t seen my date. Ok I’m starting to get pissed off. After closing the glass doors, I saw Lisa go to her desk and pull out her purse and starting packing.
“You can go in now, Miss Cooper. Mr. Mantle said you can go in when the meetings over.” she replied.
“Oh.” I mumbled as I stood up.
“Oh um, is there…uh.” Lisa stuttered, as she stopped packing her bags and looked pleadingly at my face.
“Yes, you can have my autograph.” I conceded, with amusement.
“Please don’t mention this to Mr. Mantle, he’ll be pissed at me for asking.” she puffed excitedly, and she dug into her tote bag and pulled out one of my Harlequin novels, and handed it to me.
“Don’t worry, you’re my fan, not his.” I grinned as I scribbled my name in the front, and scribbled a note in the back; ‘Thanks for the soda.’
“Oh thanks so much. My mom’s not gonna believe that I’ve met you today.” she flushed as she quickly picked up all her stuff.
“I’ll get you a pictured autograph. Via Mantle, if he fires you, I’ll hire you as my personal assistant ok?” I grinned.
“Ok.! Bye!” she laughed as she zipped pass me and through the thick glass doors. She was in a hurry.
I walked to the thick board doors and pushed them open. And there Reggie was in a heated conversation, with another man seated next to him in the large boardroom. The hell does he think I am?! This isn’t blast from the past Betty, who thought her date making her wait on him was ok, especially not him!
“You know, I have lot’s of other things to do, than wait on you like some kind of personal assistant, Mantle!” I snapped.
“OH shit! Betty. Hold up, just a second!” He jumped from his chair, and walked over to me, and tried to grab my arm. I slapped his hands away. “Ouch! I was gonna call!”
“If you’d call, I wouldn’t be here! Waiting on you!” I snapped, as he shook the hand I slapped viciously.
“Yeah, I know you would’ve blown me off.” He replied, with a smirk. I felt my anger rise.
“I’m leaving!” I gritted between my teeth.
“The hell! You can’t leave now!” He panicked, as he grabbed my arm. “Look I’m sorry to make you wait like that. But I got so caught up, with work…and…and…hey you look hot!”
I took my soda, propped open his pants and dumped the cold beverage down his pants.
“Cool off!” I snarled, as I emptied it, and set the can on the table.
“Damn it! The hells the matter with you?!” Reggie shrieked as he ran to a door, and slammed it shut.
“Boy you two never change.” I heard from the guy, Reggie was talking to. I completely forgot he was in the room. Yikes!
“Um…sorry you had to witness that. Whatever you saw, is just some iota between the two of us. Nothing to do with business…or…his business. Whatever!” I babbled. “Wait a tick. What do you mean we never change? Do I know you?”
The man stood, and walked over to me, he stretched out a hand in greeting. I took it and shook it.
“Dilton Doiley at your service, Miss Cooper.” he replied with a smile.
“Oh my gawd! Dilton?! Hah!” I laughed, as I pulled him into a hug. “What’s with all the formal crap? What are you doing here? Tell me your not on Mantle’s salary.”
“No, I’m Vice-President of Mantle Corp.” He replied as he took off his forever present glasses, and rubbed them with a cloth that was in his pocket. Some things really never change.
“Alright, sounds productive.” I smiled. “It’s good to see you Dilton, how are you doing?”
“I’m doing good.” He smiled. “And yes I’m married, and I have kids. Twins actually, a boy and a girl, they just turned seven a couple months back.”
“Geez, what’s in the water? I have twin nieces.” I laughed. “They’ll be three this summer.”
“That’s great. Maybe we can all get together sometime. Other than the Reunion, I hope.” he replied.
“Yeah, I gonna be in town for the rest of the summer. I’m taking some time off from writing and traveling.” I said.(hah! It’s not a lie so bite me!)
“Ahh yes, you are Betty Cooper a.k.a. Betsy Cooper.” he grinned. I rolled my eyes. “I need to beg you a favor.”
“Sure.” I answered.
“Don’t get angry with Reg, the meeting popped out of nowhere. And he forgot all about it, trust me all that was on his mind was you. All day! If his secretary hadn’t of reminded him after he got in from lunch, he would’ve canceled his date with you for sure.” Dilton explained calmly.
“Well…when you put it that way.” I resided, not sure whether to feel disappointed, or elated at Reggie‘s quick resolve to cut me off when all else fails. “I guess I can forgive him this once. I mean I didn’t wait all that long.”
At that Reggie hustled back into the room in fresh clothes, jeans and a shirt. He has clothes in his office?
“Look, I’m sorry!” He apologized again. “It won’t happen again.”
“Good to know.” I replied. “Can we go now?”
“You…you still…” he stuttered.
“Reggie, don’t ask. I’m still here aren’t I?” I puffed in frustration.
“Well…uh Dilton you can lock up. I’ll see you later.” he replied, as he grabbed my hand.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll see you two Friday night.” Dilton responded from behind us.
“Bye Dill.” I waved, as Reggie pulled me out of boardroom.
“You know you didn’t have to do all that.” Reggie said while we drove in his silver Mitsubishi. He always did like fast cars.
“I know, but I was pissed and I wanted, too.” I smirked evily at him, when he looked me. “So where are we going?”
“The beach.” he replied, as he drove up the ramp to the freeway.
“The beach? I know you love water and all, but I’m not dressed for that.” I said.
“Only dockside, there’s a really nice seafood place I wanna go to.” He said.
‘Ugh I just had Japanese for lunch, how much seafood can I take in one day?!’ I thought warily.
We drove in silence all the way there, which I didn’t mind at all. It’s complete chaos back at the Cooper Residence, and I still haven’t rented a car. I definitely have to do that.
“What are you thinking about that’s got you so quiet?” He asked as I stared off at the beach. “You ok?”
“I’m fine. Just thinking that I need to rent a car.” I said turning to look at him. He didn’t take his eyes off the road, so I got the side of his face, he had a nice studded diamond earring glittering from his ear. But I admit Reg still had the looks that would keep any woman looking.
“What for? I’ll take you where ever you need to go.” He offered.
“Don’t you have work?” I asked.
“I’m off til Tuesday. The meeting today was the event of the week. So you have me all to your sexy self.” He grinned.
“Um…right. Don’t people go to work on Mondays?” I blubbered, not letting the conversation shift.
“Yeah, but when you own, your own highly successful business you can go to work whenever you feel like.” He said snottily. “And you know how I despise Mondays.”
“Yes princess.” I giggled, as he drove up to a large restaurant called “The Sea Urchin”.
He quickly found a parking space, and parked. I was shocked. He brought me to a place where there was no Valet parking?! And the place could’ve been named after a boat! This is very interesting.
“What no Valet?” I teased, pinching his side as we walked up the entrance.
“I was waiting for that.” he mumbled. “But since your getting all touchy feeling so early in the evening, trying pinching a bit lower.”
I said nothing, as he opened the heavy wooden door, and I walked in.
“No Valet, but they do R.S.V.P., huh?” I snarked at our table that was outside on the balcony, facing the ocean and it’s waves.
“What?” he asked trying to look innocent. “I’m compliant on the valet part, but I refuse to go anywhere without R.S.V.P.”
“Yes, princess.” I laughed. No point in arguing with him when he’s set in his ways, we’ve been on ‘dates’ before, and Reggie was always constantly trying to show off his money. It used to piss me off to no end. But I just let him show off, I came to the conclusion that it was just apart of his personality. And that he’ll give up eventually, plus I thought it was kinda cute. The romancing and the charming parts, not the money flashing parts.
When we got to the podium, a waiter was already there waiting to take us to our table. There was also a bar. But I already came to the decision that I was not going to be drunk or intoxicated in anyway around Reggie period. And I voluntarily admit, that I don’t trust myself around him, tipsy or not. *sigh* what was I thinking?
I noticed the waiter still hasn’t left yet, he was just standing there. I cleared my throat as turned my gaze back to the menu.
“I’ll have the stuffed crab.” Reggie replied, as he handed the waiter his menu.
“Uhhh. I’ll have the Shrimp Sampler.” I said. It looked pretty good, three different dishes of shrimp in one platter. I wonder how much weight I’m going to gain eating out like this all the time.
We ordered our drinks and sides, and finally the waiter left. The other tables were empty outside so we had the balcony all to ourselves. How romantic. I just want to gag.
“So how are you and Riverdale’s Top Model doing?” Reggie asked as he sat back sipping his champagne.
“We’re doing good.” I answered, while watching the wind play with his hair. I heard my cell phone ring. “*sigh* I’m sorry. Hold on.”
“Hello?” I answered.
“Betty! Where are you?” I heard my sister ask on the other line.
“Polly?” I puffed. “The hell!”
“Do you always answer your phone like that?” Reggie snickered. I gave him a annoyed glare.
“Where are you? We’ve been waiting for you all evening.” she said.
“Ok, none of your business. And we?” I asked confused, I never set any appointments today.
“The girls. I thought you were going to-”
“Oooooh no! Don’t start that! I’m not here to baby-sit everyone’s offspring.” I gritted. This is pissing me off, and starting to dampen the evening.
“But-”
“But nothing Tinkerbelle. You go find Peter Pan and-”
“Shit! How did you know?!!” she shrieked over the phone. She was so loud Reggie heard it and gave me a questionable look. I put her on speaker phone, and set the phone down on the table. Now I’m sure, my sister is nucking futs. So I decided to played along, not really knowing what really was going on.
“Well, it is pretty obvious.” I said calmly. I don’t know what she was talking about. Reggie quickly moved his chair next to mine and sat next to me.
“What are you doing?” I whispered. He shook his head at me.
“But…but…I swore not to say anything…” she babbled over and over on the phone. She’s obviously petrified of someone finding out her secret.
“What’s wrong with her?” Reggie whispered quietly into my ear. Causing me to shiver. This date was a bad idea.
“Betty I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t mean for it to go on this long. But then seeing you here, and then you spring this whole summer vacation thing on me.” she rambled.
“Vacation?” Reggie asked. I quickly covered his mouth with my hand.
“Who’s that? Is someone with you?” Polly asked.
“Uh, yeah I’m hanging out tonight with some friends.” I replied.
“Oh, um…well…I guess I’ll talk to you later then.” She sighed.
“What? Wait a minute. Polly, what’s going on? You can just call me phone and go into some wacko tirade, and then-”
“We’ll talk later ok! Bye!” I heard her pant, cutting me off. I heard Jack shout at her in the background before the phone clicked.
“Hmmm, it’s moments like these why I’m glad I was an only child.” Reggie said behind my hand, as he kissed it.
“Um…ri…right.” I stuttered. It’s hard trying to think when he distracts me like that. I quickly shook my head. “Stop that! I need to think.”
“I don’t think there’s much to think about.” he said with dismay as I snatched my head back from him. “But indulge me I want to know what’s the latest in the Cooper household.”
“You mean Maguire household, my sister is married.” I replied, noticing he still hasn’t moved back across the table where he’s supposed to be.
“To anyone else, it’ll be the Coopers until you die.” he said, sipping his drink.
“Or my fathers dies, or I get married.” I grinned.
“Are you trying to give me a heart attack?” he coughed into the glass.
“I didn’t know you cared.” I laughed.
“You have no idea.” he growled.
“What?” I asked, I know I heard him say ‘You have no idea.’ Am I supposed to look farther into that? (What let me have dumb blonde moment I don’t want to look to far into something and come out an idiot.)
“You heard me.” he grumbled. “Why didn’t you tell me you were planning to stay for the whole summer?”
“Because I wasn’t at first. But my niece’s sweet-talked me into it, and my sister obviously doesn’t want me around cause she’s hiding something. Blah, blah, blah. Call it word vomit.” I sighed as I swept my hair over my shoulder.
“Boy do you know how to make a splash. You’ve changed a lot Cooper.” Reggie said, as he looked off at the water.
“We all have.” I said.
“That’s true.” He agreed.
