Later that day, Superman was sitting in one of the chairs in the room where Jane and Chris had been sitting the previous night. He had one of his elbows on the table with his face resting on a loose fist. He was in deep personal thoughts when all of a sudden Chris walked into the room, which startled him.
“Chris what are you doing here?” Superman asked him, a puzzled look forming on his face. “Your not supposed to be here right now, you know that.”
Chris was out of breath as though he’d been running for a while. “Superman…” he panted as he bent over and rested his hands on his thighs, trying to catch his breath, “thank God your here…it’s Jane…I can’t find her…she’s missing…”
Superman stood up in alarm. He walked over to Chris, grabbed him by the shoulders, and straightened him up so that he could look into his eyes. “What are you taking about?” Superman questioned him urgently, his expression turning grave.
Chris’s breathing was started to return to normal but his voice was still filled with panic. “I walked her home last night but she didn’t come to school today. I was worried so I called her house…she wasn’t there. Her parents thought she left for school early…I looked all over for her…I can’t find her anywhere.”
Superman’s eyes grew wide and he shook his head in disbelief. This was not happening, he told himself. Get a grip…think, he commanded himself.
“Are you sure she’s not just over at one of her friend’s house?” Superman asked, almost pleading. But he already knew the answer to that. He knew Jane well enough to know that she would never skip school, especially without her parents consent. Obviously she did do some things that they would not approve of, such investigating the area where her dead friend’s body had been found and following someone she knew was involved with the murderer to an abandoned industrial area, but she would never skip school. If she had it was definitely not like her and with Rellek running loose…
“No…her parents are worried, they called the police…,” Chris informed him great sadness.
“I don’t think we should jump to any conclusions,” Superman told him. “If she was in any kind of trouble she would have contacted me by now. I know it…you know it. She would have sent me a message.”
“But what if…she wasn’t able to?” asked Chris in a foreboding manner.
Superman sighed. “It can’t be Rellek…there’s no way he could’ve…” Even known about her, he was about to say, but then he remembered the tape. “Oh my god…” he said loudly as the realization dawned on him.
Jane had been on the tape. When he’d grabbed a hold of Trevor she’d run over to him…and Chris had still been standing back taping the whole thing.
“Chris…” he said, looking at the young man intently. “When you were making the tape last night…did Jane look at the camera? Did you see her face…in the camera?”
Chris thought for a moment. “Yes…” he croaked, “…I think so…why?” Then he gasped. “You don’t think…”
“I don’t know…” Superman replied. Then he walked out of the room and headed down the stairs to the basement.
Moments later Superman barged into the room with enough force to cause the knob of the door to slam against the wall and bounce off so hard that it might have slammed shut on its own if Chris hadn’t stopped it has he followed Superman into the room. Superman bounded over to Trevor and stood before him again.
Trevor could see the mixture of anger and worry etched into Superman’s face as he glared down at him.
“What’s the problem?” Trevor ventured. He saw the young man standing in the room behind Superman and noticed the girl’s absence but didn’t think much of it.
Superman realized that if Rellek had gotten a hold of Jane somehow, and assuming that she was still alive, Trevor was the only leverage he had to get her back. And that was assuming that Rellek even had any kind of real feelings for his cohort at all. He was alive…but judging from his appearance that didn’t say too much about how well he had been treated.
“I’m not sure but…Jane’s missing…” Superman said, trying to fight off the tears that were forming in his eyes.
“Jane?” Trevor asked with a questioning look. “Who’s Jane? Is she the girl that was here the other night?”
“Yes,” Superman replied dejectedly.
“What do you mean…she’s missing?” Trevor asked with a curious tone.
“No one knows where she is. I sent her home last night. Chris here is her boyfriend, he said he walked her home but then she didn’t show up for school today and now no one can find her.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Trevor said honestly, but his expression indicated a detached concern. “Why are you telling me this?” he asked.
“I think you know why,” said Superman.
Trevor shrugged his shoulders. “What do you expect me to do about it?” he asked.
“Damn it!” Superman screamed as he grabbed one of the flimsy walls of the cubical that was right next to Trevor with one hand and ripped it away and then he flung it to the back of the room with great force, causing it to become partially lodged in the wall far behind them. Chris put his hands up and backed away closer to the door in surprise when this happened.
“Look…” Trevor said calmly. “I told you this was a mistake. But you didn’t listen to me. People like you never listen to me,” he muttered. “And then you wonder why shit like this happens. I TRIED to warn you,” he said earnestly.
“What will he do to her?” Superman asked him, his panic clear in his voice.
Trevor sighed deeply. “I honestly don’t know,” he replied solemnly. “Listen…if he did take her I believe there’s a chance that she could still be alive. He might have done it just to fuck with you, I don’t know. If that’s the case, though, he might let her live, at least for a while. You should let me go now, if she’s still alive I might be able to help her.”
Superman thought about that for a while. “No,” he finally said, “It’s too risky…I don’t trust you,” he added.
Trevor looked away from him with a disgusted expression on his face.
“Do you consider Rellek as your friend?” Superman asked him.
Trevor sighed and shook his head as he tried to explain. He opened his mouth a couple of times but nothing came out. “It’s…it’s too hard to explain,” was all he could finally manage.
“Does Rellek consider you a friend? Does he care about you at all?” Superman asked, rephrasing the question.
“He has shown some concern for me in the past,” Trevor admitted.
“You live together…in the same building. You know about him…what he does. Doesn’t it bother you?” Superman continued.
“You have no idea,” Trevor replied. “But it’s not like I really have any other choice.”
“Why do you stay there? Why don’t you just leave?” Superman asked, questioning him further.
“I told you…he FINDS me. He ALWAYS finds me,” Trevor said, with particular emphasis.
They looked at each other in silence for a few moments. Then there was a loud noise that came from somewhere above them. It startled all three of them.
“What was that?” Chris asked in a hushed voice.
Superman looked up at towards the ceiling in the direction the sound had come from. “Shh…” he said as he raised his hand to Chris.
Then Superman looked at Trevor and noticed the scared look on his face. It was the first time he’d seen any sign of real fear from him since he’d been brought here. “It’s him…isn’t it?” he asked.
Trevor looked at him but didn’t answer, what little color there had been was completely drained from his face now. They would find out soon enough, he thought. The air was getting thicker and the light was beginning to fade from the room.
Superman looked back at Chris who was still standing close to the door and saw that he looked even more scared than Trevor did right now. Superman walked over to him and grabbed his arm and quickly led him to the corner of the room behind what was left of Trevor’s cubical where he pushed him down to the floor. Just then they heard a series of heavy thumping sounds coming down the stairs. Dust and loose pieces of tile fell from the decayed ceiling. Superman whirled around just in time to watch as Rellek came busting in through the doorway, taking most of the jam and some of the surrounding wall and ceiling tiles in with him before ducking down enough to get all the way into the room without cutting a path in the ceiling with his head as he moved. He saw Trevor sitting frozen in the chair and Superman standing in the corner behind him and he let out a deep, blood-curdling growl that caused the hairs on both of the two human’s necks to stand up on end. It didn’t make Superman feel too peachy either…he was equally disturbed by Rellek’s greeting. The being’s massive square-shaped face was contorted with his blackish lips peeled back to reveal many of his large, crooked, crocodile-like teeth. The “whites” of his eyes were actually a grayish color surrounding greenish-yellow irises and his pupils were glowing red. The lamp hanging over Trevor’s head got even dimmer as it swung back and forth on its cord from the vibrations that had been caused by Rellek’s entrance. Trevor was breathing heavily at that point while Chris was gasping for breath with his hand clutched to his neck. Superman decided to make a move.
“Please,” he said as he approached Rellek carefully with his hand up in front of him. “Let’s…talk for a moment.”
Rellek let out a massive roar that literally shook the entire room and caused Trevor to cringe as he tried to cover his face with one of his pale, skinny forearms. Rellek glared at Superman, as if daring him to make another move.
Almost without thinking, Superman raced over to Trevor and grabbed him by the throat. “Tell me where Jane is or I’ll break his neck,” he warned Rellek.
Rellek growled again and cocked his head as he glared back at Superman with his terrible eyes and then he sort of…smiled. Then he reached inside his coat and pulled something out. It was a videotape, the one with the label on it that said “WATCH ME”. He held it out to Superman, putting it just within his grasp if he dared to take it. Superman looked at the tape in Rellek’s outstretched hand. He knew he would have to let go of Trevor’s neck in order to take it. Thoughts raced widely through his mind. Why was he trying to give it back? Was it a trick? He tightened his grip on Trevor’s throat, causing him to gag. Rellek tossed the tape on the floor close to Superman’s feet and backed away a couple of feet, making it clear that he really wanted Superman to have the tape. Superman kicked the tape to the side of the room with a grunt. He wasn’t about to let his guard down, he remembered how fast the creature was able to move.
“I mean it, you tell me,” Superman pleaded. “I’ll do it.”
Rellek laughed. It sounded more like a rusted garbage dumpster being moved around concrete floor but that’s what it was.
“Nuh uhhh,” Rellek said, shaking his head slowly. “You do that…and I’ll make her suffer in ways you can’t even imagine,” Rellek said with an almost happy tone in his grating voice. “I’ll make videotapes for you…every so often.”
Superman would have felt relieved to learn that Jane was still alive if it hadn’t been for the sickening realization that Rellek intended to keep her alive for the specific purpose of torturing her just to get at him. He loosened his grip on Trevor’s neck a bit so he could breath a little better.
“Please,” Trevor croaked, looking up at his captor, “He means what he says. Just let me go and I’ll see what I can do.”
Realizing that he really didn’t have much else of a choice he let go of Trevor and backed away towards the corner where Chris was still sitting in a kind of choked fetal position, wheezing for breath. Rellek moved closer to where Trevor was sitting confined in the old metal chair, causing him to tremble with anxiety. He grabbed a hold of the chain that was attached to Trevor’s right arm in one hand at the midpoint while he placed his other hand on the arm of the chair itself and effortlessly pulled it apart by breaking one of the links. He did the same thing to the chain that was attached to Trevor’s left arm and broke the ones that bound his legs in the same manner. The whole process took only about five seconds and then Rellek stood back a bit as Trevor immediately tried to stand up out of the chair, the broken chains still dangling from his appendages. He would worry about getting those off later. Trevor staggered and fell forwards, breaking his fall with both of his hands so that his face wouldn’t smash into the floor. Rellek stepped forward and bent down towards Trevor as he grabbed one his arms close to the shoulder, then he yanked him up off the floor, pulling him towards his body as he backed away a few steps while he growled softly as he glared at Superman who was still standing in the corner in front of Chris. Rellek still had his grip on Trevor’s arm and held him up by it as he would still have trouble standing on his own. Rellek placed his other hand on Trevor’s back as he looked down at him and then back up at Superman again. Trevor looked almost like a child as he was so dwarfed by his companion.
“He wasn’t harmed,” Superman tried to assure to him, hoping that Rellek might afford Jane the same mercy.
Rellek growled angrily at him. He looked down at Trevor and moved the hand on his back to his small chin and pushed it upwards a bit to reveal his neck, which had already begun to bruise. Trevor winched when Rellek moved his hand to lightly touch his injured throat. Rellek grunted with displeasure as eyed Superman. Then he turned Trevor around and started pushing him towards the exit of the room.
“Wait, please, take me to her!” commanded Superman as he started moving towards them.
Rellek stopped and pushed Trevor out through the opening where the door used to be and then took a pounding step towards Superman and let out another gut-wrenching roar which caused him to freeze in his tracks. Rellek, his hands now free, motioned to Superman to “come and get it”. Superman lunged at him and got both of his hands around Rellek’s massive neck and pushed him over to the floor with a heavy thud, then he started squeezing as hard as he could. Rellek grabbed a hold of Superman’s wrists in each of his hands and started trying to pull them away. For several moments the struggle seemed to be at a stalemate. But then, very slowly, Rellek started moving Superman’s hands away from his neck. As soon as they were detached he lunged up and head-butted Superman as hard as he could, causing Superman’s head to fly back hard, while keeping hold of his wrists. Superman flew up into the air, taking Rellek with up through the ceiling with him but then Rellek let go of him and thudded back down into the floor of the basement room, causing it to cave in a bit from the force. He quickly got to his feet and barreled up the stairs towards Trevor who had managed to scramble his way to the top by now just as Superman broke through the ceiling above them. Rellek scooped Trevor up with one of his giant arms and ran straight into the wall, bashing his way through it with his shoulder to get outside the building while shielding his cargo from the impact with Superman hot on his heels. As soon as he was outside he tossed Trevor on ahead of him as far as he felt he could without causing him serious injury and then he turned back around to face his pursuing adversary. Trevor, who had managed to regain most of his ability to stand on his own, started scrambling off to get away from the scene of the fight ensuing fight. Superman hit Rellek in the stomach with full force and knocked him down, driving his massive body several feet down into the ground. The uninjured Rellek gouged Superman’s eyes which momentarily blinded him before taking hold of his throat and jamming his fingers into his neck much the same way he’d done before. The blood started pouring from Superman’s neck again and he realized that he was in yet another losing battle. He hadn’t the strength to pull Rellek’s hand away no matter how hard he tried. Rellek lunged forward, pushing Superman ahead of him as they flew out of the hole in the ground. Superman’s back hit the ground a few feet outside the hole with Rellek on top of him, who bared down on his wounded neck. He tried to claw at Rellek’s eyes but Rellek caught his hand in his mouth and sunk his teeth down into it, causing it to bleed as well and drip down into Superman’s face.
“Please,” Superman pleaded with a gout of blood that drizzled down the side of his cheek from his mouth as he spoke. “Just…let Jane go…that’s all I ask of you…please…”Superman’s vision was beginning to blur out.
Trevor, who had stayed just close enough to the skirmish to still see what was going on, saw what was happening now and against his better judgment he started running back towards the two combatants. Superman’s eyes were beginning to roll into the back of his head as Trevor arrived at their location. He went to Rellek’s side and looked up at his face as he reached out his hand and carefully touched the forearm that was connected to the hand Rellek was using to choke Superman to death. Rellek looked down at him and spit Superman’s hand out of his mouth.
“Get back,” he commanded, as he brought his other hand over and used it to push Trevor away, causing him to fall backwards to the ground a couple of feet away.
Trevor winced as he briefly struggled to his feet and took a few steps back towards Rellek. “No, please…let’s just go now, please!” he begged as he took a hold of Rellek’s forearm again and began to tug on it. Of course it didn’t budge, though.
Superman came to a bit as he heard Trevor’s voice and managed to refocus his eyes enough to see what he was doing.
Trevor looked down at Superman. “Look…he’s beaten, he’s done.” Then he looked back up at Rellek again with a mixture of fear and determination in his eyes. “Come on, see…you won. He’s not even trying to fight anymore. We should leave now.”
Rellek just looked at him for a few moments and then back down at Superman again. Something in the creature’s strange eyes had changed…they didn’t seem quite as threatening now. The red light in his pupils had faded some. Then, much to Superman’s surprise, Rellek let him go and stood up over him with Trevor still hanging on to his arm. Superman stayed on the ground, choking in his blood. Trevor tugged on Rellek’s arm again, trying to coax him towards a large drainage ditch he’d spotted behind the old building.
“Look,” Trevor said, pointing in its direction. Rellek looked back to where he was pointing, his nostrils flaring a bit at the faint smell of sewage he detected. Then he took a hold of Trevor by the back of his neck in an absent sort of way and started leading him in that direction. Once they were a few feet away from him, Superman propped himself up on one of his elbows to watch where they went while clutching his neck with is other hand.
Rellek stopped walking and snapped his gaze back at Superman with a thick growl, the red light glowing faintly in his pupils. He looked as though he was on the verge of going back to finish him off. Trevor put his hand on Rellek’s side. “Come on,” he said in a sort of playful tone, trying to get Rellek’s attention back.
Finally Rellek turned away and continued on towards the drainage ditch, still clutching the back of Trevor’s neck as they went down into it together. There was an opening to the sewer there, which they both climbed into.
