April walked slowly out to the deck where the turtles sat restlessly. They stood quickly as she stepped outside and she found that she couldn’t meet their eyes. She looked away, and a fat tear fell down her cheek.
Michelangelo sat down heavily in his chair. She didn’t have to say anything to them - they knew. His chest was tight and he realized that he wasn’t breathing. He sucked in some air but it hurt. Raphael burst into tears, crying like he hadn’t done since he’d cut himself playing with father’s sais when he was about six. Leonardo numbly walked over to April, intending to hug her, but his knees gave out and he found himself kneeling before her with his arms around her waist and his cheek resting against her soft stomach. Donatello slid down the wall and sat crying quietly on the floor, wishing that Charlie was with him Her presence would soothe him, comfort him... Charlie would tell him what to do... she would tell him how to fix it... he fumbled for his shell cell, but found he couldn’t press the numbers right to call her... his hands were so clumsy.
A bright green light exploded out of the bedroom window. It got stronger and brighter until Don could hardly look at it. He shielded his eyes with his hand, squinting at the glow. Then just like it had appeared, it was gone.
No one moved.
April tore herself away from Leo and ran back inside. She screamed a moment later and the turtles snapped to life, running in behind her. Glass things smashed as they shoved their way past an end table to get to the bedroom.
Master Splinter... no... Hamato Yoshi lay in the bed.
April ran to him and put her ear on his human chest. A second later, she yanked the pillow out from under his head, tossed it on the floor, tipped his head back, pinched his nose and put her mouth over his to give him two breaths. She found the right spot on his chest with her hands.“One - two - three - four - five - six -” she counted as she started CPR.
Don’s brain kicked in and he ran to the front door, crashing his way outside. The van door was locked, so he put his elbow through the driver’s window, smashing it to bits. He yanked the door open and popped the hood, pulling the jumper cables out from under the seat before he ran to pry the battery out of the van.
Yoshi’s body was still warm, but April couldn’t get his heart to go. Donatello shoved Raph out of the way as he burst back into the bedroom. He dropped the battery on the floor, hooked a black cable and a red cable to the two posts and picked up the live ends.
“Get back, April!” he shouted, not wanting to kill her with the voltage. She jumped back, breathing hard and Donatello pressed the live ends into his father’s chest, right above his heart.
Casey took Lisa and Charlie back to his place when they got out of the hospital. They’d told the doctor that the girls had been mugged and that he’d tried to save them but had gotten his ass kicked in the process. He’d given a statement to a police officer, vaguely describing some real muggers he’d grappled with a year before.
He let Charlie and Lisa sleep together in his king-sized bed and he took the couch. They’d both protested a bit, but he didn’t really mind - it was a very comfortable couch. He didn’t feel like sleeping, though. The guys hadn’t called, and he knew what that meant - Splinter had died. Casey got himself a beer, even though it was the middle of the afternoon, and propped his feet up on the coffee table, staring out the window, remembering good times.
He decided to give it a while longer, then call April to see if they needed him to drive up there to bring everyone home. The turtles were going to be complete messes - they didn’t know how to cope with loss.
Casey got up a few times to check on the girls. They’d curled up together in the centre of his huge bed, both wearing his t-shirts, with their arms around each other. Under any other circumstances, it would have been his dream come true. He sighed as he took in their stitches and bandages, then went back to the couch.
A sharp knock at the door woke him up. His apartment was completely dark - he’d been sleeping for hours. He grabbed a baseball bat from under the couch and hurried to check on the girls. They were still asleep, but stirred a little when the knock came again.
Casey gripped the bat and moved silently toward the door. No one knew where he lived except -
“Casey?” April called, “Are you there? Open the door!”
Casey snapped the light on and yanked the door open. April jumped into his arms and he hugged her tight. “Are you okay?” he asked, not letting her go. “Are the guys okay? I figured... well... I guess I know what happened,” he said sadly.
A shadow fell over them as Donatello’s large figure filled the doorway. “Is Charlie okay?” he asked, his eyes searching the room for her.
“The girls are in bed,” Casey said. Donatello had black circles under his eyes and his shoulders were slumping. He’d bled through some of his bandages and weaved back and forth with exhaustion. He looked like shit. “I’m real sorry, Don,” Casey said, stepping away from April to squeeze his friend’s shoulder like men did. “I’m here for you guys. Anything you need and I’m here, okay?”
Don smiled, “You’re a good friend, Casey,” he said. “And, actually, there is something we need. We need you to take Splinter to the hospital. The mutagen worked, but he’s in rough shape. He’s in the van out back with the guys. I think he‘s gonna be okay...”
“Holy fuck!” Casey gasped. He ran back to the couch, stuffed his feet into his shoes and grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming with you,” April said. “Then I’m going to take the guys home, then I’ll come back. They haven’t slept in two days now,” she fussed, pulling Casey out of the apartment.
Don locked the door and snapped the light off after they’d left. He stumbled quietly to the bedroom and around the big bed to the side where Charlie slept. He lay his bo on the floor, then sat on the edge of the bed and stroked her hair. Her head was bandaged and her nose was purple. He smiled a little - she was still beautiful.
Donatello lay down next to her on top of the blankets and fell asleep the moment his head touched the pillow.
Lisa woke up shortly after daybreak, not sure where she was. She stretched and took a few deep breaths as the memories came flooding back. She sat up quickly, remembering the smells and the fear. Then she realised where she was - she was with Casey Jones and Charlotte... she was safe. She looked over at her sleeping friend and gasped in shock at the sight that met her eyes.
One of the turtles... Donatello... lay on top of the blankets with a huge arm holding Charlotte against his uh... chest. He looked peaceful enough in his sleep, but she couldn’t help but think that he also looked very dangerous and kind of frightening with all his cuts and bruises. His other arm was under Charlotte’s head and she looked quite comfortable, curled up against him. It dawned on her that he’d done it all for Charlie. He’d been stabbed, kicked, hit, scratched, bitten, and clawed... and his father had just died, but he’d come back here to be with her. Lisa wished she could find a man who would love her that much.
Lisa’s eyes scanned over his body and she couldn’t help but marvel at his musculature. He was a healthy boy, to say the least. Her eyes stopped at his groin and she wondered briefly where he kept his um... thing.
The strong need to pee hit her and she hopped out of bed and went to find the bathroom. It was a typical bachelor’s bathroom. The towels needed to be washed and the only bar of soap had fuzz growing on it. The toilet lid was up and the bathtub was dingy.
Back in the bedroom, she wasn’t sure what to do. Charlie and Don were both still sleeping and she wasn’t sure if she should go home or not. Lisa stretched and looked at the bed... she was so tired, and to be honest, she was afraid to be alone.
She hesitated for a minute, then picked up a blanket from the foot of the bed and spread it over Don as gently as she could to keep from waking him, then she went back to the other side of the bed and climbed back under the covers, shivering a little as the memories flew in and out of her head. Lisa sighed and looked at the ceiling, making up her mind to go to rape counseling and to take some self-defense courses.
