The glass over the display cases started to smash, building to a crescendo as the new mutants burst forth. Off to Don’s left a hyena barked and laughed, to his right, more a crocodile took his first, experimental snaps at the air. A tiger roared, a gorilla beat his chest. The green glows faded away and the fluorescent lighting took over again. the whole place was a pit of broken glass, teeth, claws, and antique weapons from the civilization wing.
Something, however, was not right with the new mutants. Some of them were anthromorphs - they walked on two feet like the turtles, and clearly had human brains controlling their bodies. But the others... it was like something out of a horror film. Some of them had only half-mutated. A wildebeest had one human leg, three bovine ones, and a bizzare human torso covered in hair that was too weak to hold up the big cow head. It thrashed on the floor, pathetically, screaming and mooing.
“It must have something to do with the age of the display,” Don said to his brother. “Some of these things were stuffed a hundred years ago for private collections.”
“Let’s take the strong ones first - leave the weak ones so they’ll get in each other’s way.”
“Hai,” Don said as he and Raphael attacked the new creatures, not giving them any more time to learn about their new bodies.
Charlie looked at Shredder - her vision was still blurry. She could hear Donatello’s voice somewhere almost like a dream. He had come for her. He hadn’t died! Charlie’s heart beat more quickly and she bled a little faster. She had to be strong and help Donatello.
Lisa was shaking with cold when she heard the loud engine rev. A black, shining motorcycle pulled into the end of the alley and a tall, slim, but muscular man got off. He pulled off his helmet and dropped it on the ground next to his bike.
“Lisa?” he called, looking into the depths of the alley. He had a flashlight, but he didn’t want to turn it on this close to the park.
“I-I’m h-h-here,” she chattered, climbing out of her hiding place.
“Holy fuck,” he said, quickly opening a pouch on the back of his bike. He pulled out a thick, gray sweatshirt and hurried over to her. “You look like shit that’s been warmed up in hell.” She was shivering so badly that he had to help her get the too-big shirt on over her head. Instantly, she felt warmer.
“T-thank you,” she chattered. He was very handsome in his leather jacket, faded jeans and tight shirt.
He went back to his bike and pulled a hockey mask out of the other pouch. A hockey stick was holstered along the side of the bike like cowboys had their shotguns along the sides of their horses in western movies. He flashed her a devastating smile and pulled the mask on.
“I’m Casey Jones,” he said, resting the stick on his shoulder. “You can either come with me now or wait for me here.”
Lisa snorted - there was no fucking way she was going to spend another second in that alley.
Donatello’s bo whirled around above his head and he bought it down hard and fast in the soft spot on the gorilla man’s neck. The silverback was huge and his arms were incredibly strong and far-reaching. The new mutant howled in pain and anger and smashed his chain down toward Don, who leaped and rolled out of the way. The chain caught him on the thigh and ripped a gash into his green skin. Don circled around, attacking, not defending, and like lightening cracked his bo over Bubba’s right arm, breaking it.
Charlie shuddered - there was the scary Donnie that she’d only ever caught glimpses of before. His eyes had narrowed to slits, he was sweating and bleeding, his muscles were bulging and twitching, and his teeth were bared in a snarl as he let out kiais (shouts) as he attacked. He struck the gorilla man again and again. A low blow broke his kneecap and brought the monster to his knees, crippling him forever. Don spun the bo behind his back to regain momentum then smoked his opponent in the sternum. Charlie winced as she heard it snap off. Bubba started spitting blood as the bone shard pierced his lungs. He fell on his back and Don twirled the bo around artfully again in a high arc, bringing it down at a sharp angle against the floor. This time though, he didn’t stop like he did with his brothers in practice. This time, it smashed into his opponent’s face, leaving a crater and killing the other mutant instantly.
Shredder had his back to her and was loading a dart of glowing goop into a gun. She summoned strength she didn’t know she had and reached one bloody hand up onto the edge of the seagull case to pull herself onto her knees and then onto her feet. He turned on her and she grinned at him with her blood-lined teeth. She had to keep him from shooting at the guys below.
Raphael was getting boxed into a corner by the canine mutants, who had instinctually bonded as a pack. The jackal guy had bitten him hard in the shoulder before Raphael had sliced his thigh wide open. The guy was bleeding everywhere and the smell seemed to be driving a couple of wolves insane - they hadn’t mutated properly, either - they seemed to be like dogs with human brains.
The hyena guy was lunged at Raphael with a rusty battleaxe. Raph had no choice but to duck down to the wolves’ level. They launched themselves at him and he stabbed one in the chest, bracing for the other to bite him in the face. CRACK! the second dog fell to the ground as Casey lifted the hockey stick - he’d brought it down hard and had broken the animal’s back.
The battleaxe hyena swung at Casey in a rage and Raph brought his leg up, kicking him in the neck, killing him. He pulled a ninja star out of his belt and threw it across the room. It stuck into the neck of the crocodile that was coming up behind Don. The croc spluttered blood, but wasn’t going down without a bigger fight. Don kicked him in the gut, doubling him over, then smashed the side of his hand into his temple in a chopping motion. The croc was dead before he hit the floor.
Shredder pointed the gun at Charlie and grinned. He was going to shoot her with it and then shove her into the seagull display. She’d be the ugliest girl in the world.
Lisa ripped open a small closet and looked frantically through it for something to throw at that shredder fucker who was advancing on Charlie. There wasn’t much there, except a mop, bucket and a few jugs of cleaning supplies. She grabbed the heavy javex jug and hurled it at him. It struck him in the back and he stumbled.
Frank roared and threw Leonardo across the room and right through a free-standing glass case. Catherine the Great’s tea set broke into a million pieces. The blue turtle was injured, tired and feeling weak.
Mike had had enough of this - this fucker was a rabid bear in a china shop. They’d destroyed thousands of dollars worth of history, fighting him off. He’d jumped them as they’d crept through the Victorian and they’d battled all the way into the Russian wing. Mike grabbed a painted portrait of Lenin and threw it at Frank’s face to distract him from Leo. The bear grabbed it and tore it to shreds (not that Mike cared about breaking something of Lenin’s - the motherfucker) and that moment of distraction gave Mike enough time to jump on Frank’s back. He threw one of his nunchucks to the ground and took the other in both hands, putting the chair around Frank’s throat, strangling him.
Leo staggered up and grabbed one of his katanas from the glass mess.
Frank was starting to turn blue around his muzzle. He lifted his big arms and clawed Mike’s legs hard. Mike screamed in pain as Leo sliced his sword along Frank’s stomach, gutting him like a fish. Frank’s intestines fell out onto his feet, like he had done to so many innocent people. He fell down on top of them, dead.
“Mikey!” Leo cried, pulling his bleeding brother off of Frank’s fuzzy body. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” Mike said, “The adrenaline is cutting the pain back a lot. Break open that case and give me that comminust flag to bandage my legs.”
Shredder turned on Lisa, pointing the gun at her. These girls were wasting his time.
“Yo faggot!” Michelangelo shouted. With Frank gone, he and Leonardo had been able to hear the fighting on the floor above. Shredder turned just in time to get the ninja star smack in his left eye. His eyeball split and the clear jelly spilled down his cheek as he screamed in agony and fell to his knees. Charlie looked down at the main floor to see Michelangelo, his right arm still extended from the perfect throw.
Charlie grabbed the dart gun from where it had fallen and stumbled drunkenly toward Lisa - her head felt like it was going to split open. The only way out was down the stairs and through the chaos below. The floor was slick like ice with fresh blood and they kept losing their balance as they tried to step over the bodies of the fallen mutated Foot clan. There were people running around everywhere, the lights overhead were sparking and flickering, and the broken glass crunched under their feet. The two women clung to each other for balance.
Donatello looked around frantically. “Charlie!” he shouted, looking for her.
“Donatello!” she cried. His head, whipped around, sending his bandana strings flying. His heart filled with relief that she was standing up and was away from Shredder.
“Get into the sewer! Get as far away as you can! I’ll find you, I promise!” He turned and ran into the group of Foot who were attacking Leonardo, his deadly bo spinning and striking faster than Charlie and Lisa’s eyes could follow.
Raphael had taken some bad hits and had fallen to the floor. Michelangelo ran to defend him while he lay there. Raphael shook his head, sending glass bits flying and carefully got to his feet. He put one hand on the wall, supporting himself while he retched on the floor - fuck he hated getting hit in the head. It always made him puke. Michelangelo stood between him and two tigers, nun-chucks whirling, as they cracked bones like they had that first night when he’d met Charlie.
“You alright, bro?” the orange turtle grunted, spinning to land a roundhouse kick to break a soldier’s neck.
“Fuckin’ A, man,” Raph spat, sending bile flying. “Gimmie a boost?”
“Hang on,” Mike said, knocking the cat people back a couple of feet. “Okay, go now!” He leaned forward and his brother jumped in the air, landed a foot on his back and launched himself over Mike and the felines. He flipped in the air, pulled out his sais, and landed on the other side of them. Instantly, two of them dropped as he skewered their kidneys.
“We need to get out of here!” Charlie spat through a mouthful of blood. Her head was clearing with the rush of adrenaline.
“How?!” Lisa sobbed, clutching her friend. “Look! The door there!”
“C’mon, let’s go!” Charlie said, grabbing Lisa’s hand as they made a dash for it. A deformed lion creature stepped in front of them as they reached the door and roared threateningly at them. Suddenly a sai slammed hard into his neck and he dropped like a stone. Charlie remembered the tree at the farm...
“Get to Shredder!” Leonardo roared over the fray. “Kill him!”
Charlie looked back across the big room where Raph was being overwhelmed by a huge rhino. She took a deep breath and grabbed his sai. It was stuck hard in the creature’s neck and wouldn’t come out. Then Lisa’s hand covered hers. Her friend put her foot on the bastard’s head for leverage, like Mike had done with Leo, and together they pulled the weapon out.
“Raphael!” Charlie screamed, hurling the weapon across the room. It skidded across the floor and stopped near his feet. He stepped on the handle, grabbed it with his two toes and snapped his knee back, flipping it straight up behind his head. He bent one arm back, caught it, and slashed the rhinoceros across the throat without skipping a beat.
Charlie pushed hard on the door, opening it, and she and Lisa ran outside out into a long, white hallway.
“Which way?” Charlie whispered.
“I dunno,” Lisa said, panicking. “Oh fuck!” Charlie looked in the direction that Lisa was pointing. The hall was starting to fill with smoke. “Fire!” Lisa whispered loudly. She grabbed Charlie’s hand again and they ran down the hallway in the other direction as fast as they could go.
