Captain Marvel met Mary and Captain Marvel Junior at Batson Hall not a moment too soon. The edifice was ablaze from a brutal arson fire, caused by several thermite flasks thrown through the front windows, and the persons responsible were in their car peeling away from the building at a high rate of speed.
“Mary! Junior!” the World’s Mightiest Mortal called out to his young partners as they arrived on the scene. “Start getting everyone out of the building! I’ll catch these guys, then come back and help you!”
“Okay, Cap,” Junior responded without looking at his friend and mentor. Instead, he began to concentrate on the task at hand; saving lives.
“Be careful, Cap,” Mary said as she followed Capt. Marvel Jr., “you’re the only brother I’ve got.”
“Always am, Sis,” and with that, he took off after the fleeing felons.
As the youthful heroes began the rescue work, Captain Marvel flew after the speeding car. He glided over the roof, then slammed both fists into the hood, grabbed the engine block and ripped it right out. After they came to a stop, Crabbetson and his thugs exited the vehicle with their guns drawn and began firing away, but the slugs simply bounced harmlessly off his chest and forehead. To make matters worse, he didn’t even feel the bullets hitting him.
“Going somewhere, ‘gentlemen’?” the hero asked sarcastically, holding the engine over his head with one hand. “Not without this you’re not! You clowns are under arrest.”
“For what?” Crabbetson replied snidely. “You can’t prove that I had the fire started!”
“Screw arson, Crabbetson. You and your boys shot at me; that’s also attempted murder, and you can bet that I’m pressing charges! And since you left those kids in the Hall, there’s reckless disregard, carrying concealed weapons without a license, aggravated assault and attempted vehicular homicide on Billy Batson! You wanna see what’s behind curtain number two?”
“Go fuck yourself, Marvel. You’ll never make any of it stick!”
“Maybe not, but then again, I don’t have to. The police will be more than happy to clap your asses in jail.”
As the law arrived, Captain Marvel turned and flew back to Batson Hall to help with the rescue work. Mary and Junior had already gotten most of the kids and the councilors out, but there were still people in the building and, even with the rain, the fire was threatening to spread to the surrounding neighborhoods.
Including Billy’s.
The hydrants aren’t pumping out enough water, he thought, and tan tanker trucks are running low, too. The water mains…I think there are about four of ’em running under this street. If I can just open one of them up…
“Junior!” he called out, about to put his fist through the asphalt. “Come here, quick! I need your help!”
Captain Marvel Jr. knew that tone in the Captain’s voice; it was urgency. He simply replied, “What's up?”
“We’re going to dig up one of the water mains and aim it at the Hall. It’ll require splitting it open, and while I’m sealing the one end…”
“I aim the other at the Hall,” Junior continued as he and Captain Marvel peeled away the roadbed . “I hope Mary’s okay.”
“She’s all right. I’d be the first to know it if she weren’t.”
After removing the tarmac, Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel Junior slammed their fists into the water main simultaneously, splitting it neatly into two sections. Water began to spurt from the main like blood from a severed artery, but before too much of the precious fluid escaped, the World’s Mightiest Man squeezed his end of the main shut as the World’s Mightiest Boy pulled the opposite end out and trained it on the burning building. The firemen raised a tired cheer as the two heroes began dousing the flames.
Moments later, the entire West wing of Batson Hall tumbled to the ground in a billow of dust and smoke.
“Mary!” both Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. shouted at the same time, thinking she might still be in the Hall.
Meanwhile, Mary Marvel was inside the fiery inferno, trying to lead the rest of the children and councilors to safety. “Trying,” because the thick smoke made it difficult for even Mary to see the way out. As they neared the exit, a section of the wall collapsed, trapping Mary’s slim legs under several hundred pounds of brick. A moment later, a piece of the ceiling came down in front of them, cutting off their exit and causing some of the kids to shriek in panic.
Neither the heat nor the weight of the debris could harm her, but it took the World’s Mightiest Girl a few moments to kick free of the blocks. As she freed herself, Mary noticed that the smoke was being pulled away from her and the others.
This must’ve been one of the outside walls, because the smoke’s being sucked away from us, she thought as she stood up.
“Okay, everybody,” Mary said, gathering the kids around her. “We’ve just found ourselves a shortcut. This hole where the wall fell is our way outside, and I think I can get all of us out of here. Now, let's go!”
Mary guided her charges and, with her bringing up the rear, took them through the opening to safety. Seconds later, the entire wing disintegrated in a choking cloud of smoke and dust that engulfed the survivors. Mary thought she heard both Cap and Junior cry out her name, and felt a pair of blue and gold clad arms wrap around an instant after that.
“Are you all right?” Junior asked, meeting her bleary-eyed gaze with his own.
“I’m fine,” Mary managed to get out before he swept her into a passionate kiss. When they parted, she added, “I just want to know one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“Why is my brother staring at us with that goofy grin on his face?”
“Well, how the hell d’you like that?” a detective with the Arson squad asked, tossing a brick to the hero and letting him catch it. “Mortar’s destroyed, but these bricks are still in pretty good shape!”
“Good old-fashioned hand-made bricks,” Captain Marvel said wearily to the arson investigator. “Glad Billy insisted on them.”
As he spoke, the World’s Mightiest Mortal glanced over at his young partners. Junior was hovering over Mary, worried that she might have been injured, and she was reassuring him that she wasn’t hurt. They spoke to each other in hushed tones, kissing in-between questions. Captain Marvel realized right then that they had finally made love to each other, and now all three of the Musketeers were grown up. He approached them with an easygoing grin.
“So,” he finally asked his kid sister and best friend, waggling his thick eyebrows, “did we practice safe sex?”
