I don't know who you are now
Mystery drenches my brain
I want to jump deep into your cloud
Because something tells me it's going to rain
Beautiful Dangerous, Slash feat. Fergie
“I know I have to prove that I’m trustworthy again, but maybe you can send me out on a smaller job?” I sat on the desk, lifting my foot to the edge so that I could tie my shoelace. “I’m going to go mad if I have to stay cooped up in here any longer. You can do whatever you have to, handcuff me to one of your men if you want, just please, let me out for a bit.”
Bane sighed, nodding. “Go with Jack and Rob. It’s a money pick up. If you try to run, they will shoot you.”
“I wasn’t planning on trying to run again.” I stood up. “But thanks anyway, I guess.”
Leaving the room, I headed down to the garage. I spotted Jack and Rob climbing into a car, and they waved me over. I climbed into the back, behind the two of them. It was a short drive, only a few minutes.
“Likely to be a rough one today.” Jack said from the driver’s seat, as we pulled up in front of the bar.
“Why’s that?” I pulled my hair up into a tight bun.
Rob turned to look at me. “He has an itchy trigger finger. If we push him too hard, he’ll shoot at us.”
We climbed out of the car, and I looked up at the grungy bar in front of us. We were right in the seediest part of Gotham now, and I was a little out of my element.
“Where are we?” I asked.
“The Stacked Deck. It’s frequented by a lot of people we work with.” Rob gestured for me to follow behind him.
We walked inside, and I immediately ducked as a glass bottle came flying towards me. It shattered against the wall behind us.
“Classy place.” I muttered, following the two men over to a table.
Seated on the other side was a man, probably middle aged, glaring at us. His hand was hidden under the table, and I figured it was probably on his gun.
“Jack.” He glared at the three of us. “What’re you doin’ here?”
“You know why we’re here, Axel. Bane wants his money.” Jack leaned on the table. “This is the third time we’ve been through this.”
I saw Axel twitch, and stepped forward, placing my hand on Jack’s arm.
“Back off.” I whispered. “I can handle this.”
He nodded, moving out of my way.
“Who’s this? Your new side piece?” Axel asked, a wry grin on his face.
I climbed onto the table, sitting with my legs crossed in front of him. “He wishes. I’m here to make sure you pay what you owe.”
He hesitated, a little confused.
“Now,” I began, using my sweetest voice. I honed in on him, drawing him close with my words. “My friends here think you have an itchy trigger finger, but I’m certain that if you don’t bring us the money you owe, they’ll be the ones shooting. So go get it.”
He nodded, a slightly confused look on his face, getting up and running to the back room. Rob followed him, making sure he didn’t try anything.
I turned to face Jack, sliding off the table. “These would go a lot easier if you stop pissing them off.”
“Eh, who cares. I still get the job done.” He shrugged, grinning at me.
I listened to the voices around us, waiting for Rob and Axel to return. It was only a minute or two, but it felt longer for some reason.
“Here.” Axel handed the money over. “Can I go now?”
I stepped aside, letting him pass. Before I could react, he whipped out his gun and shot Jack in the stomach. Jack went down, clutching at his wound as blood began to flow. As Axel ran out the door, I turned to Rob.
“Go get him.” I demanded, as I crouched down to Jack.
He hesitated, clearly not wanting to leave his friend. “But…”
“I’ll deal with this, go get him!” I waved him away.
“Am I going to die?” Jack wheezed, looking at the blood on his hands.
“Fuck no. You’re gonna be fine, just give me a second.” I ripped his shirt open, revealing the wound.
“It sure feels like I am.” He was getting paler by the second, grabbing my arm in fear.
“Hey.” I grabbed his chin, forcing him to look at me. “I’m going to heal you, but I need you to shut up, alright?”
He was fading, but I wasn’t about to return to Bane one man down. Placing my hand over the bullet hole, I began to hum. I focused on the vibration, letting it flow down my hand and into Jack. I could feel the wound closing and his skin slowly returned to its normal colour.
Coughing, he rolled onto his side and picked himself up. I helped him out to the car, trying not to bump his still healing wound.
“I thought you healed me.” He groaned, climbing into the back seat. “Why do I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck?”
“I just sped up the healing process. You’re still going to feel bruised for a couple of days.” I carefully closed the door, turning to find Rob dragging Axel over.
He threw the man to the ground. “Do you want to drive back, and I’ll deal with Axel?”
“Sure.” I climbed into the driver’s seat, taking the keys that Jack handed to me.
“Jack got shot, but she healed him.” Rob said, standing in front of his boss, covered in blood. Though whether it was Axel’s or Jack’s he couldn’t be certain. “Did you know she could do that?”
“No… Where are they now?”
“He’s asleep in his room, and she’s keeping an eye on him.” He walked out, carefully closing the door.
Bane stood up, deep in thought as he headed to Jack’s room. Gently pushing the door open, he saw Jack asleep on the bed. He stepped inside, turning to see that she was curled up on the chair, also asleep.
He crouched in front of her, softly brushing her hair off her face. He expected her to flinch again, like she had before, but she didn’t. Instead she stirred, unconsciously pressing her face against his hand. This time it was him who flinched away. He looked down at his hand, wondering why he was feeling this strange need to protect her now.
Even after she’d broken his trust and made him feel so angry, he still wanted her around. Maybe she reminded him of what he’d lost a long time ago, or maybe he just liked that she didn’t immediately do whatever he said. Whatever the reason was, he knew he couldn’t let her leave now.
I opened my eyes, quietly yawning as I uncurled from the uncomfortable position I’d fallen asleep in. Jack was still asleep, his chest slowly rising and falling as he breathed.
Looking down at myself, I realised my white shirt was now red from his blood. I needed a shower, so I quietly crept out of the room.
I knew there were going to be questions, because I hadn’t told anyone that I can heal, but I was ready for them now. I was still angry that I’d been trapped in that basement room for a few days, but after all that time to think, it seemed strangely easy to let out the part of myself that had been hiding for so long.
Stepping into the shower, I let the cool water gently wash over me. The white floor turned a soft red as the blood mixed with the water and swept down the drain. It was like a disturbing art piece under my feet.
I got out, wrapping a towel around myself. If I was at home alone, I would have just stayed in the towel and allowed my skin to air dry. But since I was in a building full of men I still didn’t completely trust, I quickly dried off and put some clothes on.
Even though I was hungry, I wanted to go check on Jack again. I didn’t think anything would go wrong, but I just wanted to make sure he was alright.
He was still asleep, so I carefully closed the door. I turned to see Bane coming my way, gesturing for me to follow him. Falling into step beside him, I walked in silence until we got to his study.
“Is this where you tell me off for letting Jack get shot?” I asked, leaning against the door frame.
He shook his head. “No. I wanted to thank you for healing him. I didn’t know your power extended that far.”
“I’m only new to it. I’ve pushed myself all the way to healing someone with technically lethal wounds, but I have to be able to focus. So if I’m in too much pain, or unconscious, I can’t heal.”
His gaze caught mine, holding me in place. I was not comfortable at all when he stared at me like that. It felt like his eyes were piercing my soul, trying to find all my secrets.
“Can you heal old wounds?” He asked.
I hesitated, pretty certain that I knew what he was about to ask. I knew that I could heal him, but it wouldn’t be easy, and I wasn’t sure if I should wait and use it as a bargaining chip.
“You’re asking if I’ll heal you, yes?”
He didn’t reply immediately, and I wondered if maybe I’d gotten it wrong. Then, after what seemed like hours of silence, he nodded.
“I can. But I need a little time.” I tilted my head, thinking. “I haven’t exactly had much cause to use my power since I’ve been in here, and I want to make sure I’m where I need to be. Give me a couple of days.”
“I can wait.”
I nodded, turning on my heel and leaving the room.
He watched her leave, unable to even imagine what life would be like without the constant pain. The morphine masked some of it, and the strength that the Venom drug gave him also helped, but neither of them fully killed the pain.
Something was changing, and underneath his strong exterior was a sudden feeling of uncertainty. Letting her do this meant he would be letting someone in closer than he had for a long time. The two of them would be inextricably linked afterwards, and he knew he would no longer be able to even consider letting her go.
