Betty was so surprised to find out that she really did not love or want Archie anymore.
When did this happen?
Reggie made her forget all about him. Did Reggie feel the same way about her as she felt about him?
‘Can we be friends if Reggie still wants Ronnie and not me? I couldn't stand for him to ignore me like he did all the others he was done with What about the deal?’
Betty wondered. She was worried. Well, she had to know.
Betty scanned the gym, looking for her man.
Yes, she finally let the thought come into her mind. Reggie wasn’t anywhere inside.
She found him outside, sitting in the limo.
Reggie had been impatiently waiting for her to come, afraid she was with Archie. That she was fussing over Andrews ,and not him,
Yes the Great Mantle was afraid and unsure of a girl.
“Reggie, I’m sorry I took so long”
Betty looked at his bloody and bruised face, and cried.
He was holding an ice cold cloth one of the teachers had given him.
“Where have you been? I hope I’m still handsome when my face heals “
Reggie  tried to joke through his pain. He attempted to smile at her.
“Veronica stopped me”. She was wiping away tears
“Did you go to him? Comforting him? Loving him, wanting him?”
Reggie asked her, his  voice rough and shaky
“No I didn’t go to him. Ronnie and Jug are with him”
“Bets, I need to know-Do you want Mantle the magnificent or Carrot Top?
Reggie always played the jerk when nervous, but Betty knew this.
And understood him as no one else did.
“Not any more” She said
“Do you want him?”
“No! Not for a while now”
“Betty I, .must tell you, I have always loved you. I lied to you about this deal”
“Reggie, I want to call this deal off”
“Bets… Whaaa did you say?”
Reggie had felt himself ready to beg her not to leave him.
He couldn’t, wouldn’t let her go!
His heart started missing beats, hands sweaty, breathing quickening at her words
“Reggie, I love you, I don’t want Archie…”
“I don’t want Ronnie…”
They both said the last together
They both looked at each other in relieved surprise. And happiness.
“I want you”, again said together.
“Hey I was right” Reggie said. “I am hard to resist”
Betty laughed. “You are a jerk, Mantle, but I love you anyway”
“She loves me! “ Reggie said. He couldn’t believe it.
“Hey, Mantle wait up”. This was Jughead.
“I have to say,  I really think you are good for Bets. Is the deal still on?”
“No!” they both said again at the same time.
“Good,” Jughead said when he heard this.
“But I still have my eyes on you Mantle” Jug said, smiling this time.
Jughead  then walked off to join Ethel. She was not too far away.   Jug had to get back to Archie. The idiot was hurt, had ice on his eye. And his swollen lips.
“Let me deal with Archie. He will get used to you two. Eventually”, Jug called back to them. God he was sooo hungry.
So was Ethel…They didn’t have too much to eat at prom before his friends tore the gym apart.
“Hey Betty is worth fighting for. Reggie fought hard for her too”. Ethel said.
“We decided we will have to have an after party at Pop’s thanks to you and Archie”, Jug called back to them, forgetting o tell them.
“We’ll be there in a bit,” Reggie called out.
“Tell Pop the tab’s on me. Order as many burgers as you like Needle nose.
And  “Jughead… thanks for all of your help, man”. Reggie said this low. He had a rep to maintain, after all. Reggie went over to Jughead. They shook hands.
“I could learn to like you Mantle”, Jug said
“No more deals except one.” Reggie said to Betty
“The new deal is to never leave me, always love me “ Reggie whispered to his love.
She agreed to this deal whole heartedly.
“Reg, you have a deal”
“I want to ask you another question” Reggie said
“Will you be my girl, Bets, now and forever?”
“Oh, yes Reggie, yes”
Reggie then pulled out a little box, and there was the most beautiful promise ring, with a blue sapphire in it ‘to match her eyes’.
He didn’t know if he would have ever had a chance to give it to her.
Reggie had it just in case. He actually had way before he came up with the deal. He bought the ring many months ago. Hoping, praying he would have a chance to give it to her.
Reggie is also an undercover romantic.
Betty had agreed to be his girl. And his wife after college.
"Yes Reggie. I do love you. I feel safe and complete with you”
It felt right. He slipped the ring on her finger.
And together, they leaned toward each other, sealing the new deal with a kiss.
Never mind what else they said or did. It was prom night after all. And they had no curfew.
If you could see into the limo, you would see only one shadow, not two….
Their shadows were so close, as if they were one person.
They steamed the windows. They didn’t make it to Pop Tate’s until much, much later. All of their friends cheered when they finally arrived. Both had a strange afterglow.
“About time you two got together!! “
This was said by Moose Mason. He wasn’t as dumb as people thought.
And they were together …….Forever more
