Chapter Six
----Earlier that day---
Leo looked down at the sleeping woman, her head gently resting on her lap. Leo let a smile come over his face and he moved his eyes back to the road before him. Among the brushes and tall trees along the road, animals stopped moving and eating to watch the truck pass by. Before long, the road narrowed and Leo's eyes widened as a great temple came into view. From the outside appearance, the temple looked fairly old, the stones were worn with age, and withering in the middle of the wall that surrounded the temple was a tall wooden door. Stopping the truck just beyond the woods, Leo gave one last glance down at his sleeping companion before lightly shaking her awake. After a few moments, Karai pulled herself out of her deep sleep and sat up, yawning and stretching. She leaned over to Leo and planted a sleepy kiss on his forehead.
" We're here, Karai, " Leo said in a low voice as he loving watched Karai yawn again. Leo laughed at the sleepy look that was still in Karai's eyes and slightly nudged her in the side." Come on, sleepyhead. "
Karai stretched one last time before exiting the truck. She grabbed her duffle bag from the back of the truck, and then proceeded after Leo, who had donned a brown hooded cloak. The hood was a bit too big, and it covered over his eyes, yet Leo moved forward as if he was walking on air. Karai wondered how he was able to see, and she couldn't help but laugh as she followed after him.
Before long they were at the temple door and Karai studied the bell above them as Leo pulled on the rope. The bell sat on the top of a poll, a far distance from the ground, and the rope that was attached was so long that it drug across the ground. After Leo rung the bell, the sound echoing inside of the walls and beyond the woods behind them, he returned next to Karai, and the two of them waited to enter. It wasn't until the sun had begun to set when the door was opened and three monks appeared before them. Karai looked at the monks curiously, noting that all three were dressed in the same colored robe and were all of Asian descent. The only thing that varied between them was their heights.
Leo gave the monks a deep bow." We wish to see Hagi. "
The tall monk gave Leo a shorted bow, his brow narrowed slightly." What is the state of your business with Master Hagi?. "
" My master is an old friend of his. " Leo folded his hands together to show the monks he meant no harm. " Just please tell him Hamato Leonardo wishes to see him. "
The shorter monk in the middle smiled suddenly at the name and threw his hands into the air." Ah, yes! Hamato Leonardo! Master Hagi has been expecting you! Please come in! "
Leo shared a curious look with Karai before bowing back at the monks. " Thank you. "
As they followed the monks through the doorway, Karai grabbed Leo's arm and whispered in his ear. " Le-Chan, I did not know you already told Master Hagi about our arrival. "
" I didn't. " Leo watched the monks in front of him, and then shook his head at Karai. " Something is going on. "
Leo's suspicious thoughts were soon faded as he and Karai finally noticed the inside of the temple grounds. They gasped at the small open meadow that was full of beautiful yellow flowers, the petals glowing in the light of the setting sun. Leo pointed to the large stone towers in the far corners of the temple, and Karai was memorized at how they seemed to reach into the sky. As they continued down the gravel path, moving past various sand and rock sculptures of various gods, Karai felt an ache in her heart for her home land and a single tear fell down her cheek. Glancing over at Karai, Leo laid his hand gently on her shoulder, knowing how much the temple grounds reminded his love of Japan, and he played with the thought of taking her back one day. But for now, her new home was with him; her new home was New York.
Once they were inside the temple, Leo barely had time to take in the quiet atmosphere when a large man with large arms grabbed him into a bear hug that nearly knocked his hood from his head. As the man continued to squeeze Leo, Karai felt a giggle gather inside of her, and when she was unable to hold it back any longer, she let out a loud laugh. The man turned his attention to the young Asian woman and he quickly dropped Leo from his arms.
" Ah, this must be Karai! " The man then grabbed Karai in a tight but very friendly hug." I am Hagi. It is wonderful to meet you, Karai-chan! " This time, it was Leo that let out a laugh.
" It is good to see you too, Hagi, " Leo smiled rubbed at his sore shoulders." But you must let go of my fiance before you crush her. "
Hagi gave Karai an apologetic smile and let her go, his small eyes almost disappearing behind his flushed cheeks." Ah, yes. So sorry! "
" Tell me, Hagi, " Leo patted the monk on the back then took Karai's hand." How did you know that we were coming? "
Hagi looked at Leo, the surprise of the turtle's question flashing in his eyes." Why, I received a letter from your sensei a day ago. He told me what had happened, and he was afraid that you would try to come here and see me. "
Leo shook his head and frowned." I should have known. "
Hagi wrapped his arm around Leo's shoulders and squeezed the turtle against him." Do not worry about it, Master Leonardo! I welcome you to our temple! Please, make yourself at home! "
Leo bowed his head." But what of the other monks, Hagi? Won't they wonder about my appearance? "
Hagi smiled and shook his head. " Don't worry about that either, Leonardo-san. They have all sworn to secrecy about you and your family. "
" Thank you Hagi. " Leo bowed again and turned to the large doors, Karai following closely behind him. Two of the monks that had let then in the temple grounds were waiting for them, and they quickly escorted the couple back outside along the gravel path to one of the corner towers. While one monk waited at the foot of the tower, the other took Leo and Karai up the steep spiral staircase.
At the top of the tower, the monk stopped in front of another large wooden door and gently pushed it back to reveal the room behind it. The room was very simple, holding nothing more than a small bed and a dresser next to it. But what caught Karai's eyes was the window across from the bed, which showed a wonderful view of the temple grounds. She left Leo's side and strolled to the window, her eyes widening at the sight below her. Leo smiled and placed their bags on the floor beside the bed, nodding to the monk that everything was perfect. The monk bowed in return, and then closed the door behind him.
Karai continued to gaze out the window, her thoughts lost in the flower-covered meadow below. Before long, she finally sensed a pair of arms slowly wrapping around her waist. She twisted her neck to meet Leo's loving stare, then turned completely around, their bodies melting into each other without hesitation. Leo gave her a short kiss on the lips and led her to the bed, taking a seat before pulling her into his lap. Once again Leo tightened his grip on Karai's waist, and she, in turn, wrapped her arms around his neck, placing their faces just inches apart.
" Not long now, my love, and we will be husband and wife. "
Karai sighed as Leo placed his palm on her cheek, her skin burning passionately under his touch. " Together forever, le-chan? "
Leo flashed Karai another warm smile while he caressed her face." Yes, together forever. "
Without another word, Karai leaned in and kiss Leo fully on the lips. Leo returned the kiss, savoring the taste of her soft lips against his, feeling that time had stopped around them in those few moments. A knock suddenly came to the door, and Leo reluctantly broke off the kiss.
" Yes? "
The monk that had showed them to their rooms earlier slowly opened the door and took a single step inside, bowing before he spoke.
" Master Leonardo, I'm sorry but Master Hagi wishes the both of you to join him. "
" Thank you. " Leo nodded, then turned and looked at his soon-to-be-wife. " Well, are you ready, my love? "
" Always. "
They rose from the bed and followed the monk back down the stairs and across the grounds to the temple, where they were once again greeted by Hagi and his strong hug.
" So are you ready, my friends? " Hagi clapped his hands together, the joy on his face shining brighter than the lit candles around them. Karai then looked down at her clothes, then at Leo's cloak and frowned.
" Yes, but, we are not properly dressed. "
Hagi's face beamed on as he again clapped his hands. " Ah, please allow me! "
From the back doors, two monks emerged, each carrying a beautifully colored silk kimono. One was red, embroidered with flowers. The second was blue, and embroidered with dragons. Both Leo and Karai gasped in surprise at Hagi's generous gifts, but were soon overwhelmed when a third monk entered the room carrying a tiny wooden box that fit perfectly in his palms. The monk handed the box to Hagi, and then stepped back into the shadows with the other monks. Hagi opened the box, revealing two solid gold bands seated on a bed of blue velvet. Karai gasped again at the rings and felt a few tears release from her eyes.
" Oh, Hagi-san! "
" I knew you would need these, so I had someone I trust get them. We had them resized as best as we could. I hope they fit. "
Feeling so overwhelmed from the monk's generosity, Leo could do nothing more than drop to his knees and bow in respect." Thank you, Hagi. Thank you for everything. "
Hagi smiled and pulled Leo back to his feet." You are welcome, my friend. " He turned to Karai, who had covered her face with hands and was weeping harder than before. Knowing that her sobs were joyful, Hagi smiled bigger and gave the couple another hug.
" All right, " Hagi stepped back, his arms still around their shoulders." It is time for you to dress so we can start the ceremony. "
The monk first escorted Karai out, sending her to another room where two other monks waited to assist her. After she had bathed, the monks helped her into the red kimono that Hagi had given her, making little adjustments to insure she looked her best in her wedding attire. When she returned to the main temple floor, Karai spotted Leo, who had also been given his own room and monks to assist him, and she couldn't help from smiling at how handsome he looked in his blue kimono.
The soft beats of drums and the flutter of a flute filled the air as Leo and Karai walked toward each other, their shaky hands gasping as they met and headed to the alter. On the way to meet with Hagi at the base of the great Buddha, Leo couldn't help from looking at Karai, thinking to himself how beautiful she looked, and he tightened his hold on her hand.
After saying a prayer to the statue, Hagi stood before the couple and recited a few Buddhist scriptures in Japanese, moving his hand over both Leo and Karai to purify them. Another prayer was said, and then Hagi motioned at Leo with a nod and a smile to begin his vows. Leo nodded backed, took in a deep breath and stared deeply into his lover's green eyes.
" Karai, " Leo's voice came out in almost a whisper. " There is so much I wanted to tell you. I had all of it planned out¦.I can't remember most of it now. " He let out a chuckle, then cleared his throat to start again, letting his words pour from the depths of his heart." Okay.I just wanted to tell you that I love you, and I would do anything for you, even if that means giving my life for you. And no matter your father or my father says, I would never give you up for anything. I love you, Saki Karai, and I will be honored to be called your husband. "
The Asian woman wiped at the river of tears on her left cheek, her smile unbroken. Leo grinned back and raised a hand to wipe the tears on the other side, watching intently as Hagi nodded to her to start her own vows. Karai bowed slightly to Hagi and begin to speak with a shaky voice.
" Leonardo, our families have been bitter enemies for many, many years now, but I know that we can pull through this, however hard it may be. Our love may be able to make things right. But if it doesn't, I will not leave your side. They will have to take my life before I would do such a thing. I love you, Hamato Leonardo, and I want all of us to be a family. And maybe even have a family someday. "
Leo smiled and at once pulled Karai's hand up to kiss it.
Hagi then directed the couple to step to the side, where a small table adorned in candles awaited them. In the middle of the table sat three cups, all different sizes and all filed with saki. Leo remembered reading about this custom in one of Splinter's book about Japan. It was called san-san kudo, and the newly married couple would exchange sips to unite them forever. Leo took the largest cup and took three sips of the bitter liquid, then carefully handed the cup to Karai, who took three sips as well before placing it back on the table. They repeated the act with the other two cups, then returned to their place in front of Hagi. The monk once again prayed and bowed to Buddha, offered another prayer to Leo and Karai, then began with the exchange of the rings. A few more scriptures were recited, then Hagi happily clapped his hands together.
" You may now kiss the bride! "
The newlywed couple smiled at each other and leaned in for a wonderful and breathtaking kiss. Their embrace as husband and wife was cut short as clapping and shouts of joy sounded from the doorway. They turned from the alter to find Master Splinter, Leo's brothers and Casey, all beaming with smiles, while April wiped tears of joy from her face.
" Master! Guys! " Leo shouted as he pulled away from Karai and headed toward his family." What are you doing here? "
Raph was the first to answer, his voice coming out very cold." Cause we knew you would you be here. "
" I'm glad all of you are here, " Leo responded back to his brother's scowl. Pausing for a moment, Leo waved his wife to join them, and Karai slowly made her way over, her eyes nervously focused on Splinter. When she stood by his side, Leo continued." Master Splinter, I know what I did was wrong, but I knew I could never live without her! "
" So you got married behind our backs, bro? " Raph growled.
Leo stare daggers at his brother." I didn't think I needed your permission, Raphael. "
Splinter raised his hand, causing Raph and Leo to stop their argument, and he let all of them stand in silence for a long time. Leo could feel the pressure from his master's stare weighing down on him, and Karai noticed a sudden sadness coming over her husband's face. Don and Mike looked around the temple, both of them not wanting to let on that the silence was making them uneasy. Casey continued to hold a still sobbing April close to his chest, his shirt getting wetter with each passing second. Finally Master Splinter broke the silence and began to speak.
" I am not angry with you, Leonardo. " The rat reached up and patted his son's shoulder." In fact, everything is going the way we planned it. "
" We? " Leo's brow folded in confusion." What do you mean, Master? "
Splinter smiled. " What I mean, Leonardo, is that everything that has happened as my Master Yoshi and Hagi had planned. "
" Whoa, Master Splinter! " Raph held up his hands." You're telling us that this whole thing was planned? "
Splinter nodded." Yes, Raphael. "
" Okay, now I'm confused, " Mikey said, scratching his head.
" Please allow me to explain, Michelangelo, " Splinter took in a deep breath and slowly let it out." You see, my sons, a long time ago, my Master Yoshi and Hagi had an idea that if the two families were united, it would slow down Saki's efforts. I have been secretly writing to Hagi over the years about this idea, wondering how we could make it work. "
" Looks like you made it work, all right, " Raph scoffed.
" We have had this day planned since Karai's arrival. " The old rat commented.
" And the whole thing with the bedroom? " Mikey wondered out loud, chuckling as Leo's cheeks turned red.
" That was not planned, I assure you, " Splinter shook his head at Mikey, then joined in as everyone began to laugh. Only Raph held his frown firmly in place.
" Yeah, well, I still don't like being related to the Foot. "
Leo moved closer to his brother and placed a hand on his tense shoulder." Raph, she's not Foot anymore. The moment we married her alliance with Shredder and the Foot was severed. "
" And exactly how is this gonna slow the Shredder down? " the red-masked turtle growled.
Leo shook his head at the cynicism in his brother's voice." With Karai on our side, Raph, she can draw in the people most loyal to her to help us. "
" Like giving us our own army, " Don added on.
Leo nodded." Yes! Even if it's a few men skilled like her, it would give us more of an edge. "
This thought got Donnie's mind going and he began to pace the floor." A small army more skilled than the Foot soliders? Even if their skills are matched with Shredder's elite guard, it would give us a huge advancement when we battle Shredder! "
With this new hope and the wedding in their minds, the family exited the temple, the happiness shining brightly on their faces. Raph walked far behind everyone, his arms crossed over his chest, the entire plan not resting easy with him. As they made their way to the great hall, the old rat stopped suddenly, his nose twitching as his hand flew into the air, causing everyone to come to a halt.
" What's wrong, sensei? " Leo asked, his eyes wide with fear.
The old rat laid his ears back." We are not alone. "
Before Splinter's words registered with them, an arrow flew through the air. With great swiftness, Karai turned and grabbed the arrow in mid-flight, the point coming an inch from her throat. Splinter called out to Casey and April, ordering them to follow the monks back inside the safety on the temple. Feeling that a fight was about to begin, Leo shed his kimono, watching as Karai broke the arrow into with her closed fist.
" Be on your guard, guys! " Leo shouted to his brothers, gritting his teeth at the loss of their weapons inside the temple." Karai, how did they find us? "
" This is not my Father's doing, " Karai stated as she removed her kimono, leaving only the under dressings." This was much more accurate. "
" Uh, Leo? " Don pointed to the wall in front of them. " We have a big problem! "
Leo looked toward the wall that surrounded the temple grounds and watched as dozens of Foot soliders landed on the ground, all of them armed. Leo then noticed another figure still standing on the wall, dressed all in black, and on his back were two swords, tucked neatly in their sheaths. Karai gasped at the sight of the figure, giving away to Leo that she knew who the man was.
" Karai, who is that? "
" Will Kash, " Karai said without hesitation." He is a solider I was personally put in charge of. "
Leo moved closer to his wife, putting his body in front of her." Is he the one that threatened to kill you? "
Karai shook her head." No, he works for my father. He would never try to harm me. "
" So we have a hired assassin as well? " Leo whispered, his eyes glued to the man on the wall.
" It appears so, le-chan. "
Kash threw his fist into the air, signaling the Foot to attack. The soliders rushed at the turtles, throwing fast punches and kicks, but unable to keep the turtles down and defeated. Hagi suddenly appeared in the yard, calling out to the turtles and tossing each of them their weapons. Soon after, the Foot went down, one by one, and the turtles stood victorious over their attackers.
" Now that is how you fight, boys. " Mikey joked, pointing at the passed-out solider at his feet. His brothers joined in the laughter, not noticing that Karai had been separated from them during the fight and that the man in black was no longer on the wall. It was only when the man stepped out of the shadows behind them did they noticed what had happened.
" Karai! " Leo shouted, his eyes glued to the sword that was resting on her throat.
" No, no, my green friend, " Kash said as Leo started to lunge forward." One more step and I'll slit her throat. "
And with that, he moved back into the shadows and disappeared, the Foot soliders following suit. Leo stood still, his mouth gaped in shock, and it wasn't until the tears in his eyes had found their way down his face did his legs give out, and he slumped to the ground.
" KARAI!!! NOOOOOO!!!! "
