Understandings
Kyle sat in the titan’s common room and pondered his encounter with the demon Etrigan. Was he telling the truth? Was he truly a descendant of Merlin? It all sounded impossible; but then again, so was meeting a real flesh and blood demon. Kyle was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t hear the door hissing open or the approach of Robin and raven behind him. A clearing of Robin’s throat jostled him from his thoughts and back to reality.
“Hm?” Kyle said as he turned around. “Oh, hey Robin, Raven. What’s up?”
“Just recuperating. And you? You looked deep in thought for a moment.” Robin replied.
I don’t think I should let them know about what I learned just yet. I need to know all the facts first.
“I was just thinking of any and all possibilities of how I know magic.”
“Yeah, about that.” Robin said he sat down next to Kyle as did Raven. “Raven looked into collection of books to see exactly what it was you casted. Raven?”
Raven sat up and looked Kyle directly into his eyes, making sure she had his full attention.
“Kyle, the spells you cast where based from nature’s elements; which means that it is isolated to this realm itself. That rules out any foreign influences like you being possessed or having someone outside this dimension as a family member. To be honest, powers such as these haven’t been used since the dark ages of humanity. It is incredibly strange for it to lay dormant in your family’s lineage until now.”
“Well I don’t really know about my real family’s lineage, just my foster parents. I can guarantee though that there was no mention of any magical powers in their history.” Kyle said with a smile.
“Regardless, your powers have awakened and if you don’t learn to control them, you would pose a serious threat to Jump City as well as yourself.”
“Which is why,” Robin said cutting in, “Raven will be teaching you how to manage your powers and how to use them. So, what do you think?”
Kyle leaned back and thought for a moment. On one hand he could wait until he was fully healed and take the stuff he bought and leave with the risk of having magic ‘flare ups’. On the other he could have all the previous stuff, have the knowledge to use magic and maybe even become something of a superhero himself.
“I guess I’ll stay for a while longer than I thought.”
Robin smiled and Raven gave a small nod acknowledging his decision. The trio discussed what would be required of him once he healed up. Since the tower itself was kept to code by Cyborg, Robin figured that Kyle could do menial work around the tower. Kyle didn’t particularly like the idea of being the teen titan’s manservant but he fell back on his beggars-cant-be-choosers philosophy.
“It’s settled then. I’ll be the titan’s butler in turn for learning magic.”
“Butler? No, not at all. To be honest the tower can clean itself and everyone takes care of their own rooms. All that is really being asked of you is to get food. Most of the time, we’re so busy that we always get take out.”
“Oh. I guess that works. I’m so used to getting the short end of the stick… bah, never mind. Ok then. When do I begin my training?”
“When you’re done healing; which by the look of things shouldn’t be much longer. Right now though I think you should get some rest. Despite using magic to defeat Control Freak you still look a little worse for wear.”
“Yeah I guess you’re right. I’ll go change and hit the sack.” Kyle said standing up and stretching. He stood there for a moment then looked at Raven with a smirk on his face.
“Don’t you go peeking now. I have eyes in the back of my head.” He said with a wink and walked off. Robin laughed at Ravens flushing cheeks in response to his comment.
“Heh, ya know, the more I’m around him, the more I like him. He seems to have an ability to make those around him laugh even in dire times.” Robin commented as Kyle left the room.
“Truly? I find him annoying. He constantly makes improper sexual innuendos to the team and makes light of everything. He should act his age, not like a child.” Raven said crossing her arms and closing her eyes while leaning into the couch. Robin faced her, a slight look of concern on his face.
“You might want to consider cutting him some slack Raven. The guy just lost his home, all his belongings and probably his job and considering what we found him in, it didn’t look like he had much to begin with. On top of that, he just found out that he is a descendant of a mage and is going to be trained to use his powers; all within a few days. It’s just a coping mechanism, and judging by the way he falls back into it so easily, I’d say he’s needed to use it a lot.”
Raven looked at Robin then at the floor; her hand rubbing her chin. I guess I hadn’t thought of it like that. Damn, I should’ve paid more attention. Always leave it to Robin to point out the hidden facts. Even living with humans all this time, I still have much to learn about them.
“I suppose your right Robin. I’m sorry. I should’ve seen it from his view before making accusations. I just thought that he was another Beastboy and to be honest, one is enough.” She said with a small smile.
Robin shared the smile and patted her on the shoulder. “Nothing to apologize about Raven, though you might want to try to get to know him at least since you’re sleeping with- er in the same room as him.” He would’ve finished his original sentence if it weren’t for the sudden blackening of Ravens eyes signaling that he was seconds away from a beat down.
“Nice recovery.” She said in a monotone voice.
Slightly fidgety, Robin stood up and bid her a good night.
“Alright ladies and gents, pay attention!”
A large, balding man paced back and forth in front of a room full of journalists and column writers for Jump City Tribune. Everyone in the meeting room stared apprehensively at the pacing man, wondering what announcement he was going to make that could affect them all.
“You all know what happened in Central Jump city today. It was nothing new when it comes to the Teen Titans but it seems that there’s a new superhero on the rise. Someone saved the Teen Titans asses from one lucky blow. What pisses me off is that we have no idea who he is! C’mon people, I expect better from you! This is the city where superhero sightings are one of the highest! We know of every hero; Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, everyone! Tomorrow I want everyone who isn’t working on their articles searching for information on the guy who saved them. Find eyewitnesses, security cameras recording the event, anything! By day after tomorrow I want his mug posted on the front page! Now get some rest. I expect everyone back here bright and early tomorrow.”
The employees filed out of the room, releasing groans of disappointment at having to work extra hard tomorrow after staying late. The bald man simply stood at the front of the table and watched them as they left. A few moments later it was just the man and a woman sitting in one of the chairs. He closed the door then sat in a chair opposite of the woman. He didn’t know how she did it but she always managed to get information that no one else could get. He wouldn’t have been surprised if it was her looks that got her the info.
The woman sitting across from him wore a four buttoned suit top and a knee length skirt, both a deep red. Her bright green eyes stared intensely, a slightly amused look adorned her face, deep, lush red lips curled slightly almost as if she knew exactly what he was thinking about. The woman moved a stray lock of her silky, neck length auburn hair back behind her ear and leaned forward; showing just a hint of what lurked beneath the white undershirt.
“So, Alfred.” She said in a low, rich velveteen voice. “Why is it you asked me to stay behind, hmm? Could there be something you want from me?”
The balding man flinched slightly at the mention of his name. Usually he wouldn’t allow anyone who works for him to call him by his first name but for her, his hands are tied. She was his ace in the hole, the one person who could get anything he needed to put on the front page and not to mention, put their competitors to shame. Only she knows why she is still here. After working under him for ten years shoe could’ve moved up the ladder easily, or even quit altogether and become a model, but with her figure she would succeed at being a actress or playboy bunny. Alfred shook away those particular thoughts. Now was not the time.
“Don’t play coy Victoria. You know why I asked you to stay behind. I want you to use your… extensive skills to find out who saved the Titans.”
“Oh? What about that little speech you gave a moment ago? You should get plenty of information from them soon shouldn’t you?”
“Both you and I know that it was just a pep talk; and probably they do as well. You’re the only person that can get any information needed to make the front page.”
Victoria smiled. “That’s right, I am. Now, it will take time but I’m sure I can get you the full story. Just be sure to have my bonus ready for me when I return.”
“The usual amount?”
“I suppose. I was considering raising the price but it’s not every day that you can document the beginning of a potential hero’s career.”
Victoria stood up and gave Alfred a small smile “I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me very soon.”
Raven entered her room only to hear the soft snoring of Kyle in her meditation chamber. Heaving a tired sigh, she unclasped her cloak and let it float to the ground beside her bed as she plopped onto the bed itself. Staring at the ceiling for a moment she let her thoughts wander until she sensed something wrong. She sat up and cautiously looked around her room. The mirror on her vanity was emitting a soft glow. Raven approached it and waited for its magic to activate. She was unfazed as the light blinded her then receded and wound up in a familiar place of rocky terrain and floating slabs of stone overhead. She walked forward from the gateway to an opening that showed various pathways into the stony maze. Before she could do anything, a light, nefarious laughter echoed through the pathways.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the prodigal daughter.”
A form similar to Ravens usual attire appeared from around a corner only she was dressed in red and four glowing eyes were all that could be seen from behind the cloak. The other girl walked towards Raven.
“Rage.” Raven spat.
“Oh, that hurt Raven. Aren’t I your favorite emotion?” She said standing in front of her and lowered the part of the cloak that hid her face showing her cocky grin. “I admit Raven, I was quite surprised that you didn’t call me out when you saw Kyle again, after what he and I did and all; though I doubt he’d remember it.”
Raven gave her Rage a wary look. “What are you talking about?”
Rages smile faded slightly and looked at Raven curiously. “You…you really don’t know do you?”
Rages eyes grew brighter and she flew up into the air bellowing in laughter. “Finally! Its finally happenening!” Before she could say anymore, a large black raven’s claw grabbed her and dragged her down to face Raven.
“What do you mean? What is finally happening?!” Raven said, betraying a hint of worry in her voice.
Rage merely smirked. “You’ve suppressed me for so long that I am starting to become my own personality, therefore isolating myself from your consciousness.”
“It can’t be. If that were true than the other emotions would be going under the same separation, but I can still feel them.”
“That’s because you let them show themselves in little ways. Kindness when you heal someone, meekness when you are embarrassed and so on. You display all those emotions except me. So the only way I am going to get released is by becoming my own personality; something that you are losing control of.”
“Impossible, there is no way that can happen. I have trained myself to control my emotions, including you.”
“Is that so? Then how is it you didn’t know that Kyle found his way into your little realm here? That he and I met?” Rage moved her face closer to Ravens as her voice grew huskier, “That he and I…fucked?”
Ravens face flinched slightly, a crack in her stern look before it crumbled to uncertainty. “You’re lying. I would know if… if that happened in this realm.”
“Oh? It may have been that way before but not anymore. I have power here Raven, it may not be much but it is enough…for now.” Rage said as she turned her back on Raven and forced her out of the realm and back into the real world.
Well, that’s it for chapter six. With any luck, now that I am out of college for the summer I should be able to update more frequently. Thank you all for your patience. Next chapter should be a bit more active with Kyle giving his powers a test run. As usual, keep those reviews coming and let me know if there is anything that can improve the quality of the story. Also I will be doing a little editing in earlier chapters, something I should have gotten around to sooner.
