Changed for the Better
The next morning, Robin wanted to be up before any of the other titans, especially Beast Boy and Cyborg. Knowing them, they would probably tease him and bombard him with questions. Opening his eyes, he briefly forgot where he was. Looking to his side, he remembered. Starfire looked so beautifully innocent that he briefly wondered if it had all been a dream, a perfectly wonderful dream. But when Starfire opened her eyes, her smile assured him that everything that he remembered was indeed more then a dream.
“Good morning,” Robin whispered.
“A glorious morning to you.”
“After we get all cleaned up, you wanna get some breakfast?”
“Breakfast sound good.”
Before they could move, they heard a knock at Starfire’s door.
“Starfire?”
“Yes? Who is calling me?”
“Cyborg. Have you seen Robin?”
“Of course.”
“I mean today. Its almost 9:00 and he’s usually downstairs eating some breakfast or something. I was just wondering if you knew.”
“I’m in here talking to Star. We both had a good time at dinner and I was asking if she wanted breakfast,” Robin spoke up.
“Is that all?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“I uh never mind.”
As soon as they heard their half metal friend leave, Robin grabbed for his cloths that where strewn about the room. “See you in thirty minutes,” he said as he left.
Beast Boy was coming out of his room as Robin passed by.
“Dude, where were you last night?”
“I told you and Cyborg that I was taking Starfire out for dinner.”
“Yeah, but you left at like 7:00. How long does it take to eat?”
“So I spent a lot of time eating. So what?”
“Take it easy dude. I was just wondering.”
“There’s nothing to talk about so if ya don’t mind,” Robin said somewhat brushing the green titan away.
“Sorry.”
As Robin got dressed in his normal attire, he had only one question on his mind, and it didn’t involve Slade. For once in his life, he was the out of Robin’s mind. No, the only question on his mind was why didn’t he realize what Starfire had meant to him sooner? She had always been there and he had never really given the whole relationship much thought. The answer was really quite simple. He had been so obsessed with stopping Slade and protecting the city, that he never once considered his future. Now he would never view his life the same way. Then a knocking at the door brought him back to the moment at hand.
“Who is it?”
“Starfire. Are you feeling unwell?”
“No. Why?” Robin asked opening his door.
“It has been ten minutes past the time you purposed that we get some breakfast.”
“Oh sorry. I was just thinking.”
“About defeating Slade?” Starfire asked sorrowfully.
“Actually no. I was thinking about you and me.”
Starfire smiled. Was this going to mark the beginning of a new Robin, one that could fight crime and still enjoy life? This was the Robin that she wanted to see, one full of life and excitement. This was the one that was perfect to her.
“Do you still wish to take me to acquire a morning meal?”
“You bet.”
“Bet what?” Starfire asked as the two walked down the hall together.
“Its another phase Star. I meant yes.”
“You think that we should tell the others?”
“After breakfast.”
“Hey, where is everybody?” Beast Boy shouted as he came into the main room. Robin and Star were out for breakfast, but where was Cyborg and Raven? “Hello? Hello?” Beast Boy shouted until Raven walked in.
“Do you realize that you interrupted my meditation?”
“Sorry. I was just wondering where you and Cyborg are-were-whatever.”
“I was in my room, Cyborg’s in the garage. Now if you don’t mind, I’ll be having my tea and you can kindly keep your voice down.”
“Raven?”
“What?” the dark titan asked somewhat annoyed.
“Do you think that something’s going on with Star and Robin?”
“How would I know and why would I care? Besides that, they’ve had been talking about going out since Robin came back.”
“I was just-”
“I’m sure that if it is something that we need to know, they’ll tell us.”
As Raven left, Cyborg entered, wiping his hands on a rag. “Must have been working on the car,” the green titan thought as he watched his friend going about. Cyborg eyed the green titan and from the way the Beast Boy was standing, there was something going on in that videogame packed brain of him.
“What are you thinking?”
“Huh? Why you asking?”
“Cause you just grabbed a ham out of the fridge.”
“Oh gross, meat.”
“So?”
“Oh, I was thinking about how Star’s and Robin have really been close the past month.”
“I know what you mean.”
“Think it means something?”
“I dunno.”
As the two continued to try to solve ‘the mystery between Robin and Starfire’ the two very happy, much in love titans returned. Before any questions could be asked, the tower alarm went off. Rushing over to the computer, Robin smirked. “Time for a little revenge,” he thought. Then turning to the others, “Slade’s back.” Raven came in shortly and waited.
“Where?” she asked without the slightest bit of emotion.
“That’s just it. I can’t get a lock on him. I think Cy needs to fix this thing again.”
“Let me see,” Cyborg said coming over to the computer where Robin was standing.
Plugging himself into the system, the metal titan’s computer side calculated furiously to decipher the corrupted data. It took some time, more time then Robin thought that he could spare. Seeing her love growing anxious, Starfire placed her hand on his shoulder, trying to take away the strain that he was returning to. “Thanks Star,” he whispered as he waited.
“Everybody get in the car. I figured out where Slade is.”
As Cyborg put the petal to the metal, it was time to get anxious. What if Slade pulled out his trap hole trick again? They would be in serious trouble. They were fortunate that the explosion hadn’t killed them. But now who knew what the madman was up to. He had definitely had unexpected weaponry. The guy probably had some trap to send them all to hell for all they knew.
“Where is Slade?” Robin asked Cyborg.
“You know the old warehousing district near the docks?”
“Yeah.”
“There was a lot of corrupted info but I decrypted a lot of it. That’s where he is. I’ll fix the system when we get back.”
“If we get back,” Raven said darkly, “We don’t know what Slade is planning.”
“Way to lighten the mood,” Beast Boy muttered.
“Well make it back,” Robin thought, “I have something more to live for now.”
“There he is,” Starfire pointed out.
Sure enough, Slade was standing there, right in front of the titans. With his arms crossed, he seemed to be waiting for them.
“Ah. Robin. I see that you are still alive. Seems that Blood has become useless to me.”
“What are you up to?”
Even behind his mask, Robin could tell that Slade was smirking. On command, an army of Slade’s robots surrounded the titans.
“Its over. And while I can’t say that you where too much of a challenge, I must say that I will enjoy your deaths. But I have grown weary of you.”
With that, the surrounded heroes were attacked.
“Titans. Go!” Robin shouted as they fought off the onslaught of robots. Instead of trying to be the hero that he had always tried to be, Robin worked in tandem with Starfire. Raven used her dark powers, Beast Boy used multiple animal forms, and Cyborg got in his car. The others looked at him like he had lost it, but he just smirked back. Pressing a combination on the dashboard, the car deployed several sonic cannons, just like the one that he had on his arm. “Cover your ears ‘cause this is about to get loud.” Firing, the cannons blasted holes through sea of oncoming robots.
“Can you three handle this?”
“Man. With my baby, I can keep this up all day if you need me too.”
“Good. Star, you and me are going after Slade.”
“But I do not see him.”
It was true. Slade seemed to have melted into the crowd. But one thing Robin did know about Slade was his appetite for seeing his enemies fall at his feet. There was no way that he left without being defeated or victorious. Catching a glimpse for a second, Robin found Slade. “There,” he pointed as Starfire picked him up. Flying over Slade’s robots and avoiding the lasers that were fired at them Starfire released her grasp on Robin’s wrists. As he fell from the sky, Robin kicked, hoping that he would hit Slade. Unfortunately, one of the evil mastermind’s robots blocked its master. And before either had the chance, Robin’s arms were grabbed and wrenched behind his back and Starfire was shot from the air.
“So Robin, you survived. I get the pleasure of killing you myself.”
“Why didn’t you do it sooner? You could have. At least tell me that.”
“That is something that you will never need know,” Slade said pulling out a knife.
Placing the blade at Robin throat, Slade was ready to end it. No more Robin, no more teen titans. Without Robin, there would be no challenge in taking over the city. But before pulling the blade across the boy wonder’s jugular, Slade was stopped by a bolt of green light. With the split second that he had, Robin managed to break free as Starfire came to his side.
“Don’t want all the glory Robin?” Slade taunted, “Are you that weak?”
“Star is going to help me kick your ass. And it’s not because I’m weak. Its because I’m better then you.”
“Needing someone else is not a sign of strength. It means your weak. I thought I told you that when you were my apprentice.”
“I never listened to you. Starfire now!”
Without a second to put up his guard, Slade found himself thrown back across the ground. Looking up, the two titans walked towards him. Reaching across the ground for a weapon, he was again shot, burning his hand. Gritting his teeth, Slade had one more trick to pull.
“You think this is over. Its not until I say so.”
With a snap of his fingers, Jinx and her team appeared.
“Consider it redemption for Blood’s failure,” he said to the three HIVE students, “Get them.”
“I don’t think so,” Beast Boy said as he and the other two titans came up behind them.
“Face it Slade. You’re through.”
“No, I believe that you are. Jinx, Mammoth, Gizmo, kill them.”
But while the others fought the HIVE, Robin refused to let Slade get away.
“You’re not going anywhere Slade.”
“Robin, I’m not leaving, not until I get what I want.”
Lunging at the titan leader, Robin and Slade were once again locked in a bitter battle. As Robin gave his one two-punch combo, Slade raised his hands and caught the fists. Without the slightest hint of effort, Slade began to crush Robin’s fists, making the boy wonder scream in pain. With a swift kick to the chest, Robin broke the grasp that his nemesis had on him.
“So you did learn something from being my apprentice.”
“Enough to take you down.”
Running head long at the criminal mastermind, Robin was knocked to the ground. Looking skyward, he saw Slade bringing down his foot to break his skull. Rolling out of the way, he was knocked down again when he got up. As Slade grabbed a nearby 2x4, Robin saw Starfire turn her head to face him as he was aiding the others in defeating the HIVE. With the brief seconds that she had, she fired a starbolt at Slade’s back, knocking him to the ground. Taking his chance, Robin got up and climbed on Slade’s back, wrapping his arm around Slade’s neck and grabbing his wrist with his other hand, locking his enemy in a precarious position. And that felt good. Now he wasn’t the one that had to worry about being killed, he was in control.
“Don’t move or I break your neck,” Robin threatened
“Robin, if you kill me, what is left for you to do? Face it. I’m the only one that keeps you from losing you mind.”
“I have another purpose you bastard,” Robin said tightening his grip.
“Too bad you won’t ever do it,” Slade said, seeming to be a little happy?
Rising to his feet, Slade seemed unaffected by Robin’s grip, making the titan wonder. Bring back his elbow; Slade knocked the air out of Robin’s lungs. As he tried to breath again, Slade slowly walked towards him.
“Like I said, I get the pleasure of killing you.”
“No you will not,” Starfire screamed as she flew at breakneck speed into Slade. The force knocked him to the edge of the pier. As Robin watched, Slade felt off and disappeared into the water below.
“I am sorry,” Starfire apologized, “I know how much you wished to apprehend him.”
Robin placed a hand on her cheek and looked into her eyes.
“We’ll get him. Don’t worry.”
“Hey,” Cyborg shouted as he was wrestling with Mammoth, “We could us your help here.”
Joining the other three titans, Robin and Starfire’s added strength overwhelmed the HIVE as they tried to flee.
“Hey,” Beast Boy said, “What happened to Slade?”
“Got away,” Robin said, and yet he wasn’t as upset as the others thought he would be.
“You seem really calm about it. Did you take something?” Cyborg joked.
Robin shook his head and wrapped his arm around Starfire’s waist since she was right next to him.
Raven nodded, seeming to congratulate Starfire and Robin, though she would never say it. Beast Boy however, looked as puzzled as anyone who walked the face of the earth. Then it finally clicked.
“Oh,” he said, “Uh you two like boyfriend girlfriend?”
Robin nodded.
“Well good for you two,” Cyborg said grinning.
“Thank you,” Starfire said, “Perhaps we should take our foes to prison and return home to celebrate?”
Robin nodded. “Lets go.”
