I unlocked the door to the townhouse, yawning as I stepped inside. I was pretty certain Crane would be gone by now. I wasn’t naive, I knew he was smart enough to get out of those cuffs whenever he wanted.
But when I walked into my bedroom, there he was, still handcuffed to my bed. He was sitting patiently, reading the book I’d left on my bedside table.
“I thought you would have left by now.” I commented, walking over to my closet to change into something far more comfortable than my club dress.
“Do I need to remind you that you kick incredibly hard and you may have broken a couple of my ribs?” He replied curtly.
I rolled my eyes, pulling on my shirt, then walking back out to him. “I guess it was a good thing I gave you a big dose of morphine before I left then. Unbutton your shirt so I can take a look at the damage.”
He did as he was told, waiting as I undid the cuffs so he could take it off. I hesitated for a moment when I saw scars on his chest. I wasn’t about to ask anything, mostly because I knew he would expect information in return. There was a bruise on his chest, but it wasn’t that bad. I was fairly certain he hadn’t broken anything, but if I tried to argue, it might be hard to get him to leave. So I gave him another dose of morphine, then put the cuffs away.
“You’re not going to cuff me again?” He asked, surprised.
I shook my head, walking into the bathroom to remove my makeup. “I’m going to be heading back to my actual home today, and I’d rather you not know where that is. You can go.”
“And you’re not concerned that I might come after you again?”
“Are you planning to?” I looked over at him, but he didn’t react. “If I was concerned about someone coming to get me, I’d never leave my house, and I’d be just as paranoid as Papa. So no, I’m not concerned.”
He watched me, but eventually stood up. “You’re smarter than you seem.”
I hesitated, resting my hands on the edge of the sink. There was no way I was letting him see me vulnerable, but that hit a really sore spot. “I have to be.”
“Being smart won’t stop people from beating you up. I hope you realise that.” He replied, suddenly standing beside me.
My eyes went wide, and anger surged through me. I didn't know how, but he'd found out way too much about me. “Get out.”
“Come now, Lili. Did you really think I wouldn’t find out?”
Spinning around, I swung my fist to punch him. He caught my wrist, throwing me up against the wall and holding me there.
“Get off me!” I fought against him, but I wasn’t strong enough when I didn’t have the element of surprise.
He grabbed me by the throat, slamming me back so my head hit the wall hard enough to daze me. “We will definitely be seeing each other again very soon.”
As he disappeared out of the room, I slumped to the floor and pressed my hand to the back of my head. Thankfully, there was no blood. I was pretty sure that I would only have a headache, and nothing worse.
“Asshole.” I whispered to myself, as I walked back into my bedroom.
My phone was vibrating on my bed, and I flopped down beside it to check the message. It was from Papa, in his short, blunt style.
Need to see you now.
I was supposed to be having dinner with him that night, so I wondered what could be so important that it couldn’t wait until then.
“Are you crashing the party tonight, Jon?” Edward asked, looking up as he walked past. “What if she’s there?”
“I need to test my toxin on a group, and a party like that will work perfectly.” He leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms. “As for her… I know she’ll be there, because the mayor is good friends with her father. She’ll attend, and I’ll give her the same deal I give you.”
He didn’t wait for Edward to reply, just turned on his heel and left the room. He’d missed out on a couple of days of preparation by stupidly getting trapped by her, so there was a lot he needed to do before the party.
“I’m going to have to cancel our dinner tonight, because I need you to attend this party.” Papa held out an invitation to me.
I looked at it. It was a little surprising that he wanted me to go to the mayor’s 50th birthday, but I wasn’t about to complain. I was still just glad I could leave the house.
“The mayor’s birthday? Why am I just hearing about this now?” I asked.
“I wasn’t originally intending to make an appearance.” He took a sip of his tea. “But he insisted, and then something came up with one of our shipments, so I need you and Luca to go in my place. That won’t be an issue for you, will it?”
I shook my head. “No, of course not, Papa. I’ll just have to go dress shopping with Sonia.”
He reached out, taking my hand. “Go ahead. I don’t want to keep you any longer. I just want you to know that I love you, and that I’m glad to see you readjusting.”
“I love you too, Papa.” I stood up, stretching my arms over my head. “I’ll see you soon.”
I headed out to my car, messaging Sonia to meet me at my favourite dress shop. It was a short drive, and soon I was walking inside. She was already checking out the dresses, turning to give me a big smile when she noticed me walking in.
“Lili! Come here!” She waved me over, pulling out a silver gown. “You have to try this one on. It would go so well with your lace mask.”
I took it from her, looking it over. It was beautiful, but a little ostentatious. I normally wouldn’t mind, but it was a 50th, and I would feel guilty doing that.
“It’s a little over the top, don’t you think?” I bit my lip, feeling conflicted. “It’s not my party, and I don’t want to draw too much attention.”
She pulled me in for a hug. “You’re worried about being arrested again, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I guess so.” I put it back on the rack.
“You know that no one would dare do something like that during one of the mayor’s parties.” She picked it back up, along with a couple of others. “Come on, you’re trying all of these on.”
I laughed, following her into the changing area. Ducking inside one of the booths, I changed into one of the other dresses first.
“Have you seen Luca recently?” She asked, in a strange sort of voice.
I stuck my head out to look at her. “Why are you asking like that?”
She hesitated, and I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. I zipped up the long black gown, then stepped out to show her.
“Ooh, no. That one is not you at all.” She said, watching me as I turned in front of her.
“I’ll try the next one on.” I crossed my arms, looking at her. “But before I do, how long have you liked Luca?”
She blushed, tucking her hair behind her ear. “I… We got close while you were in Arkham. I didn’t want to say anything, because I know the two of you have a whole friends with benefits thing going on…”
I took her hands, interrupting her. “What’s going on between me and Luca is just sex. I’ll give that up so you can be happy. I’ll talk with him at the party tonight.”
“Are you sure? I really don’t want to come between the two of you.”
“Yes, I’m sure. Now, do you want me to try on the silver dress?” I softly kissed her cheek, then skipped back to change into the one she’d originally picked.
I took a breath, hiding my fear from even myself. This party was very public, and I couldn’t shake the sense that the police would come for me there. Stepping into the silver dress, I realised that she was right. It did look good on me, and I did love it, but I was still hesitating.
“Lili, if you don’t let me in there to see, I’m going to barge in.” Sonia called.
“Alright, alright.” I laughed, pulling back the curtain. “I will admit that you might have the right idea about this dress.”
She gestured for me to turn around for her, and I did so.
“You’re wearing that one tonight.” She said firmly. “I don’t want to hear another word about it. Now get changed back into your clothes and we can head home to work out what to do with your hair and makeup.”
After buying the dress, we drove back to my place, and I thought I’d managed to avoid any talk about Crane and the asylum.
“So, I looked up this doctor you had at the asylum.” She commented, heating up the curling iron. “Though I suppose he isn’t a doctor anymore. Either way, what was he like?”
I shrugged. “He’s kind of an ass. Big superiority complex, liked telling me that Papa is the source of all my problems.”
“He’s cute though.” She laughed. “In a thin, mysterious type of way. Maybe you should fuck him. He seems like he would be into very interesting things in the bedroom.”
“Oh my god.” I turned around to face her. “You’re terrible.”
She gave me a sly look, running her fingers through my hair. “Someone has to be the bad influence. I think you should go find him, dazzle him with your wits, and then bring him home to meet your dad.”
“Now I know you’re fucking with me. Can you imagine what he would say if I brought home my former psych doctor?” I handed her the hairpins. “I think he would ship me straight back to Arkham.”
“I would pay any amount of money to watch that happen.” She started curling and pinning my hair, drawing it up into a cute curly bun. “But Jonathan Crane seems more like the kind of guy you visit in the middle of the night when you want to get whipped.”
I laughed so hard I began to cry, thankful that I hadn’t done my makeup yet. “I missed this. I missed just talking about the silly things.”
She pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “We’ll get you back into it. After a month in that hell they call an asylum, everything will probably take time to stop feeling weird again. Now, stop feeling sorry for yourself, I still have to do your makeup.”
