Thus with my lips have I denounced you, while my heart, bleeding within me, called you tender names. Kahlil Gibran, The Forerunner: His Parables and Poems
I stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around myself just as my phone began to ring. When I saw that it was Bruce, I immediately picked up.
“Did something come up?” I asked, pretty certain of why he was calling.
“I’m sorry, I know you were really excited to go out tonight. But Joker is planning something, and I need to deal with it.”
I leaned against the sink. “You don’t need to apologise, Bruce. Just come home safely.”
“I’ll come to yours when I get home.”
Hanging up, I sighed. It was far easier to deal with him cancelling on me now, and I was just thankful I hadn’t really started getting ready yet.
I decided to make the most of the night alone and treat myself a little. Throwing on some clothes, I headed down to the kitchen to look for Charlotte.
“Are you going out tonight?” She asked, as I skipped past her to the fridge.
I shook my head. “Not tonight, no. Just having a night to myself.”
“What do you want for dinner?”
“You decide. You always pick something good.” I pulled a cider out of the fridge door. “I will be in the theatre room, doing a foot spa and just relaxing. I definitely need a night off from thinking about the charity.”
She nodded. “In that case, I’ll go out and get what I need. Do you want anything?”
I walked to the cupboard, pulling out a bag of chips. “No, I’ve got everything. Thank you, Charlotte.”
I dropped the small armful in the theatre room, then headed upstairs to grab everything else I needed for the relaxing I was planning. It was just going to be me and a good movie for the night. No worries, or at least as few as I could manage when Bruce was out, and no thinking.
I turned on one of my favourite movies and settled down to watch. As I put my feet into the warm water of the foot spa, I could feel my whole body relax. It was nice to not have to stress about anything for a while.
The evening went by quickly, and soon I was just curled up on the chair, considering heading up to bed. As I seriously started to think about moving upstairs, my phone buzzed with a news alert. I’d set up a filter that told me whenever a news report was released that mentioned Batman. It was mostly to ease my anxiety when I wasn’t down in the cave.
Opening the alert, I felt my heart drop when I saw what the article was called. Batman Spotted with Catwoman. There was a photo of him, his arm around her waist as they grappled up into the darkness.
I didn’t understand why this was affecting me so much. I knew I trusted him, and I knew he wouldn’t do anything, so why was the jealousy eating me up?
I needed to get out, away from the house for the night. After making a note in my phone to call the doctor, I called Harvey.
“Are you free?” I asked when he picked up. “We haven’t caught up since the other night, and I wanted to see how everything is going.”
“I’m at my usual table, if you want to join me. You know I’ll always make space for you.” He replied.
I stood up, heading to my bedroom. “I’ll be there soon.”
I walked into the club less than an hour later, still feeling upset and betrayed. There was nothing I could tell Harvey about what was going on without revealing Bruce’s secret, so I would have to just put on a brave face and fake it.
“It’s good to see you again. Especially when we aren’t running from a maniac.” Harvey stood up as I approached, giving me a gentle hug.
“I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.” I laughed, joining him at the table. “How are things going?”
He shrugged. “I’ll be honest, it’s a lot at the moment. We’ve got Falcone on a long list of charges, but that means a whole office full of evidence that has to be sorted through and organised.”
“Thank you for covering for me.” I rested my chin in my hands. “I know I should have told you what I was doing.”
“Look, as I see it, you were doing a good thing.” He took my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “But that’s not what’s bothering you, is it?”
I bit my lip, looking out at the rest of the club. The anger inside me wanted me to just spill everything, but the logical part of my mind held me back. Then a familiar face pushed through the crowd. It was the man Falcone had sent to beat me up.
My blood ran cold, and my heart began to pound in my chest. I didn’t want to show it, but I guess Harvey recognised the look on my face.
“That…” I whispered, but it was already too late.
The man was approaching the table, and I spotted a bottle of something in his hand. Before I could react, he threw it at me, saying “This is for Falcone.”
I panicked, but suddenly Harvey was in front of me. The bottle smashed against his face, and I watched as a drop hit my hand almost in slow motion.
As if in the background, I could feel my hand beginning to burn, but I was focused on the chaos in front of me. Everything seemed to be happening to someone else, and it was like I was watching from above myself.
Chaos was ensuing, and I watched in quiet fear as people surrounded us to help. It was so strange, as the paramedics came and carted Harvey off, guiding me along behind him.
I sat in the back of the ambulance, absently holding his hand as we drove. I could feel the paramedic wrapping my other hand up, but I just couldn’t seem to pay any attention to anything.
The trip to the hospital was mostly a blur, and I finally came back into myself when I was ushered into a chair outside the burn unit.
“He’ll be in the burn unit while they assess the damage. He’ll likely stay there for a while, but you should be able to visit him soon.” The doctor told me as I sat down. “You’re welcome to wait, or we can call you when he gets out.”
“I’ll wait.” I said quietly, clutching my bag to my chest.
He walked away, leaving me on my own. I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore, and the guilt was consuming me very quickly. This was my fault, and I couldn’t blame it on anything but my own poor judgement.
I pulled out my phone to call Bruce, hoping that he was back and would pick up. It rang for a few moments, then went to voicemail.
“Bruce, I’m at Gotham Central Hospital. There was an attack, and Harvey is really hurt. I really need you right now. Please pick up the phone.”
Unsure what to do, I burst into tears. I was alone, and scared, and the one person I should have been able to rely on was too busy to help. My mind was back and forth, doubting and trusting, and it was honestly making me dizzy.
I tried calling Bruce again, but it went straight to voicemail. With nothing left to do but wait, I wiped my tears away and tried to ignore the stinging pain in my hand.
Nurses and doctors came and went, sometimes checking on me, but mostly just going about their work. After a couple of hours, a doctor came over to me.
“His burns are serious, but mostly contained to one side of his face.” She told me, calmly. “He’s still sedated, and we’re planning to keep him that way for a while, but you’re welcome to go in a sit with him.”
“Thank you.”
She lead me to his room, and I hesitated when I saw the gauze on the side of his face. He looked so vulnerable, and I had to hold back more tears. Sitting down in the chair by the bed, I took his hand.
“I’m so sorry.” I whispered. “I didn’t know this would happen.”
I called Bruce again, not really expecting him to answer. I wasn’t surprised when he still didn’t, but that didn’t stop me being upset about it.
Exhaustion washed over me, and I curled up in the chair to sleep. I spent the next few hours drifting in and out, not able to get any full sleep, though whether that was because of the uncomfortable chair or the consistent pain in my hand was unclear.
At around six am, I gave up on sleep and walked over to the window. The sun was coming up, and the rest of the city was waking to start their day.
Hearing footsteps behind me, I turned to find Bruce finally walking in. He came over to hug me, but I stopped him.
“Eve, I’m so sorry.” He hesitated, an apologetic look on his face. “I only got back half an hour ago, and I came straight here as soon as I got your messages.”
“I’ve been here for eight hours, Bruce.” I wrapped my arms around myself. “Go home. I don’t need you here anymore. I’ll deal with this myself.”
“I don’t want to leave you here alone.”
I shook my head. “We can talk about this later, but I’m really upset with you right now.”
He didn’t reply, just nodded and left the room. I leaned against the windowsill, taking a deep breath. I needed to go home and sleep, but I wanted to be there when Harvey woke up. A little torn, I decided to leave and get them to call me if he woke up before I returned.
