Mary looked at the ground, feeling ashamed. "You must be so disappointed in me as a champion!"
"We gave you the opportunity to excel, but we did not expect you to be our champion, Mary," Shazam replied.
Mary blinked. "But you said..."
"I told you that the gods fancy you, and they give and take on a whim," Shazam replied. "Beauty and enchantments were your birthright, but the gods wagered among themselves what you would do if offered heroic might and abilities, instead. True to your nature, you bargained those powers down to enhance your charm. Now you given up the rest of your heroic powers for the benefit of your friends. That amuses the gods even more! So Billy will get all of the powers they initially offered to you, and the remaining powers you are giving up will go to Freddy, enabling him to run like the wind, fly like a bird, deflect bullets, and shoot lightning from his fingertips."
Freddy frowned. "What is left for Mary?"
"Everything that she wants, but nothing that she needs," Shazam replied. "Beauty, charms, passion and supreme confidence."
"That's not acceptable!" Billy objected. "She needs real powers now more than ever! Those evil men will try to capture her – and worse! And her father is one of them!"
Shazam replied. "Mary has embraced her destiny and rejected responsibility. She has given up the role of being a hero. That role is now yours, and you will be her protectors."
"Of course, we will protect her!" Billy said. "But she shouldn't need protection! Give my powers back to her! She didn't know what she was wishing for!"
Freddy added, "I agree; it wasn't a real wish! Mary was just being nice!"
"It is already decided," Shazam said, hitting the ground with his staff.
Mary touched Billy's hand, trying to calm his outrage. "He is right, Billy! I was a terrible hero! It wasn't for me! You are much braver and more selfless than me."
Then she embraced Freddy. "And you have always wanted to run on your feet again, stand up to bullies and show off to girls. Well, look at you now! You deserve those powers much more than I do!"
Finally, Mary turned back to Shazam. "I won't take back my wish even if you let me."
"So be it," Shazam replied. He held his staff in front of them. "Grab hold and set it in stone."
Billy, Mary and Freddy each put their hands on the staff.
"Billy, you are the boldest and the most powerful of your troop, hence you shall be called Captain Marvel, the world's mightiest mortal! Freddy, you do not have Billy's strength, but you bring humility to the table, so you will be called Lieutenant Marvel, the unbreakable boy! And Mary Marvel, you are blessed with charms and unquestioning obedience. You are the world's most desirable damsel! Each of you has formidable powers, but you are novices. You must face your fears and challenge your weaknesses, or all that you have will be taken away."
Then Shazam lifted the staff and dropped it with a thud, the ground shook like there had been an earthquake.
Mary let go of the staff, trying to keep her balance. She tripped on her stiletto heels and stumbled away from Shazam and her friends. Her ass landed on the grass with a thud.

Her vision went black. She took a deep breath. Gradually her sight returned.
"What...?" she started as she looked around her. The wizard and her friends were gone, as well as the euphoria that often came with being Mary Marvel.
She wasn't even in Fawcett City, anymore.
Instead, she was sitting on the lawn in front of her home, wearing only her pajamas.
She was an ordinary girl, again.
Whenever she returned from the Rock of Eternity, she felt like she was coming out of a dream. Whenever she returned from being Mary Marvel, the dream became a nightmare!
Being Mary Marvel was like a manic experience, and now that she was Mary Bromfield again, she worried that she was losing her mind.
But as frightening as that possibility was, it might also be good news!
Maybe everything the past few days never really happened, at least not the way she remembered it.
Maybe nobody had raped her. Maybe Daddy wasn't involved with human trafficking. Her memories seemed too crazy to be real, so maybe they weren't real at all!
Certainly, if she told a doctor everything she had experienced the past couple of days, someone would have carried her away in a straitjacket. That's what it felt like when she was stolen from bed – how long ago was that? Was that what really happened?
It didn't explain why she was standing outside of her house looking stupidly at the front door in the middle of the night.
A better explanation was that she had been sleepwalking.
It wouldn't be the first time.
She could clear up any doubts by saying the wizard's name, but if Mary Marvel was real, not just a slutty part of her personality, then Mary didn't dare invoke her!
She didn't want to believe anything. She didn't want to take chances. She didn't want to do anything.
Mary climbed to her feet and brushed dirt and grass off of her ass. She intended to go back to her bed, fall asleep and hope her life was normal again in the morning.
