Reggie had given Betty a beautiful silver and gold lapis lazuli bracelet and was proudly taking it out of its fancy box. He saved his allowance for two months to buy it for her.
“Oh Reggie, it’s beautiful!” she cooed as his hands trembled slightly when he placed it on the arm she offered to him. Reggie brought her a corsage of blue and white roses and her mother a huge bouquet of multicolored flowers. Both Cooper women squealed in delight at his thoughtfulness.
Reggie didn’t dare try to pin the beautiful corsage on her because of the low neckline, and left that to her mother. Betty’s parent s took hundreds of pictures of them, and Reggie took Betty to his home so his parents could take their share of pictures as well.
Vicky also had a video made of them and she planned to give Hal and Alice a copy. After the “ooh’s” and “ah’s” from his parents were finally exhausted, they were allowed to leave to go pick up their friends.
They went to the prom in a luxurious stretch Hummer with their closest friends-Nancy Woods, Chuck Clayton, Jughead and his date, a girl named Tracy Potter, and Ethel, who came with her very handsome cousin, Ian Edgeway. Ethel was very upset that Jughead asked someone else to the prom instead of her, but she refused to sit at home. She and Jughead had gone out once in a while in the past, but no one could say they were a couple.
Jughead was deeply interested in business and he had dreams of being a chef and owning a chain of restaurants: that dream consumed him. Tracy had asked him when he was preoccupied over what culinary school he should pick, and asked him to take her to the prom. He said ‘yes’ before he knew what he had agreed to do. When Ethel heard, she cried her heart out to Betty and Betty persuaded her to ask her hot cousin Ian, and go anyway.
Betty made Ethel’s prom gown and gave her hair and makeup advice. Ethel looked beautiful and she planned to act as if she was in love with Ian. She and Betty got pleasure watching Jughead squirm in obvious jealousy. Jughead could not believe how beautiful Ethel looked, and could not stop staring at her, making his date angry. Jughead didn’t know Ian was her cousin, and it was obvious to all that he was jealous of them being together.
Ethel had always been the town’s ugly duckling and with the help of Betty’s huge makeover and with her teeth fixed, she began to blossom. Now, in her senior year of High School, she had turned into a swan. It also helped that Betty made her prom dress and helped her with her hair and makeup. Ethel had pitch black hair, which was cut in a cute bob and accented her huge eyes to perfection. Betty’s design was a sexy deep green dress, which was very low cut in the back. All of the guys in the car gave Ethel wolf whistles when they saw her outfit.
The group of friends was feeling no pain, all of them laughing, singing, to the unusually loud music of Nelly, Sinead O’Connor, Madonna, and Mariah Carey. They were all singing very loud and off key, but they didn’t care. They were all secretly a little tipsy. The noise was deafening, however. The limo driver, Rudy Greco, did not mind. He smiled at them. They were all courteous kids thankfully, and he thought no drinking was going on. He was dead wrong. Reggie and Charles had snuck some rum from their parents’ liquor cabinet in a thermos. Betty bought freshly made fruit punch, so they were all sipping on rum punches, feeling happy as hell to be graduating. Rudy thought they were drinking juice and sodas.
They were all graduating from High School and feeling great. The guys planned on spiking the punch at the prom too. They planned on a whole summer of fun before they all went off to college.
Archie and Veronica were going to the prom in Veronica’s father’s limousine, separate from the rest of the gang. Veronica had also ‘borrowed’ some rum from her father’s cabinet. Betty should have stayed home. How dare she come here with Mantle? She’ll forgive me. She always does. Archie was, annoyed because he had planned to go over to Betty’s house after he took Veronica home; in hopes he could seduce Betty into sleeping with him. He would just smile at her and tell her how much he loved her, and he hoped she’d let him have sex with her. He already knew Veronica wouldn’t do it with him. He asked and she slapped his face, horrified. He figured all he had to do was to apologize to Betty and smile his cute smile at her, and she’d open her legs for him.
Archie was silently fuming while he talked and cuddled with Veronica in the limo, becoming hornier by the second. He couldn’t wait to see Betty and coerce her to leave the prom with him so he could screw her silly.
The prom was being held at the fancy Belleville Hotel in downtown Riverdale. The theme was glamorous days of Hollywood. The girls were dressed in slinky gowns, and the guys were in fancy tuxedos. They all looked very elegant, like the movie stars of an era gone by.
After Reggie and the gang arrived, some of the group went straight to the dance floor. Others went to spike the punch bowls-Reggie and Jughead to be exact. Archie and Veronica were already there. Archie could not keep from staring at Betty because she looked amazing. Reggie asked her to wear her hair down, and she did. She looked nothing like a tom boy tonight.
*** Betty and Reggie danced with others though Reggie made it clear that Betty was his date. The way he made his point was that he danced close to Betty and glared at her dance partner in a menacing manner few could ignore. Right now, Betty was dancing with Cheryl’s brother, Jason, who was constantly pulling her close to him.Reggie never took his eyes off them and Reggie’s dance partner was not happy with that. Reggie was scowling at Jason, who felt as if he owed Reggie for beating him in asking Betty to the Prom. Jason had wanted to take Betty, but thought she was going with Archie, so he hadn’t asked her.
Jason laughed at Reggie’s dirty looks and continued to enjoy his dance with Betty. After their dance was over, Reggie would only let Betty dance to the fast dance tunes with someone else. He kept a particularly close eye on Jason, who came alone to the Prom with Cheryl and her date, a guy named Ryan Miller. Reggie noted smugly how Archie was devouring Betty with his eyes. “All slow dances are for me only, babe.”
“Yes Reggie, whatever you say.” She would smile that angelic smile at him as she was whisked away yet again. That dress is so hot! Reggie absolutely could not take his eyes off of her. Betty even danced with Archie while Reggie danced with Veronica during a fast dance. Reggie’s green eyes were fixed on Archie. Archie wanted to keep dancing with Betty when the song was over, but Reggie would not hear of it.
“Nothing doing Red.Get lost.” Reggie grabbed Betty’s hand and pulled her away from Archie’s grasp. Reggie found the look on Archie’s face simply hysterical. Andrews is too fucking much, Reggie thought.
The senior class had voted Betty and Reggie Prom King and Queen. Their King and Queen dance was sizzling. They chose to dance to ‘I had The Time of My Life’ from the movie “Dirty Dancing”. Reggie and Betty danced as if they were the main characters: lovers, Baby Housman and Johnny Castle from the movie, and the audience was cheering them on. They looked perfect together.
Reggie was an excellent dancer, and it was easy for Betty to follow his lead. Archie was not cheering. He was seething. He kept cracking his knuckles as he stood there, angrily watching Reggie and Betty dance. After this dance, the King and Queen had to dance a slow dance together. The song chosen this time was ‘She’s like the Wind’ from the same movie. Reggie was singing the song in Betty’s ear. Reggie had a magnificent singing voice: that and his closeness were sending chills up and down her spine.
They were molded together as if they were one person. Sometimes Reggie would spin Betty away from him, so he could have the pleasure of pulling her close to his body. He held her tight, breathing in the scent of her hair. She always smelled like vanilla and jasmine. They were now his favorite scents and flavors. Reggie was in seventh heaven.
I’m gonna do it. I’m going to ask her to be my girlfriend tonight. I’ll treat her better than Archie ever could. Betty seems happy to be here with me. I’ll let her know that I know how to be faithful. Reggie hoped she would want to be with him, as a lover, not just as a friend.
“Hey babe, you and I look great together,” he told her as he struggled to get the courage to tell her how he felt about her. He loved her so much it hurt. He had to tell her about his feelings tonight. He wanted to marry her when they got out of college. Betty just smiled, but she would not take him seriously. She knew how fickle Reggie was- like all the other boys she knew. They had gone out many times, and even kissed, though they were only quick pecks on the lips or cheek. But for her, tonight was exceptionally memorable.
My stomach feels so funny. Reggie looks so handsome and he’s treated me like a queen. I love how his hands feel on me. This has been the most perfect evening. She had her eyes closed as they danced. She felt his erection and it made her panties wet. She moaned involuntarily.
Great, I’m being turned on by my best friend. She pulled him closer to her, grinding her Mons hard against his already erect member, taking pleasure in making him moan with desire. Archie was watching them and seemed almost dangerous in his jealous fury. Betty and Reggie were oblivious to this. They were so into each other. Reggie placed a tentative kiss on her lips. They both started with the electric shock they felt. They had never kissed romantically before.
I’m going to make her mine, tonight. She has to be my girl. Reggie could not get enough of her, again breathing in her scented hair and kissing her neck. He loved hearing her soft moans. He loved everything about her. He was having difficulty breathing.
Veronica spent a lot of her time dancing with Jason Blossom, because her date, Archie, was acting foolish over Betty and Reggie. Jason had given up trying to get any more dances with Betty because Mantle was not letting her out of his sight. Veronica gave up on Archie because of his extreme jealousy over Betty being so cozy with Reggie.
Eventually, Reggie noticed how Archie was being restrained and took wicked pleasure of the redhead’s misery. Reggie was baiting him at every opportunity. Reggie would pull Betty close and let his hands roam just a little too close to her butt. Reggie knew Archie would not miss his moves, and he knew how much Archie hated when he touched Betty. Reggie smirked at Archie while he tormented him. Archie’s face stayed red all night. Archie’s jealousy was getting on Veronica’s nerves. Charles and Jughead had to restrain him several times because he wanted to fight with Reggie.
Ethel was laughing herself silly at Archie’s behavior. Her cousin Ian was taking his role of playing the part of devoted date to heart. He danced every dance with her and would not leave her side for very long. She felt good at the angry glares
she was getting from Jughead, who was extremely busy trying to keep Archie from getting his ass handed to him by Reggie.
“Archie, what’s your fucking problem? I had to call you out on your jealousy too many times tonight. What the hell is wrong with you? Maybe you should have asked Betty tonight instead of me! We’re through!” Veronica had enough; she turned to walk away when Archie grabbed her arm.
“It’s just that I worry about Betty being with Mantle, sweetie. You know how he is. Don’t be mad.” Archie tried to reason with Veronica.
“Fuck you, Archie. No one treats me like this!” Veronica yelled, stomping her foot. She was livid. She moved closer to Jason Blossom, who looked at her, admiring her beauty, which soothed Veronica’s battered feelings. Veronica then became even more exasperated when she saw Jason was frowning at Reggie and Betty. Jason could not keep his eyes off Betty either.
“Et tu, Jason?” Veronica asked Jason.
“I just hate how Mantle’s showing off,” Jason would not dream of telling Ronnie he was jealous of Mantle. After all, the Blossom family was much richer than Mantle’s; Mantle was just too far beneath him on the high society scale. But Reggie was Betty’s date tonight and Jason wanted Betty, bad.
Finally, the prom was over. The gang was coordinating where they would go for the “after parties,” when Archie confronted Reggie outside. Reggie refused to fight with him, not wanting to ruin the prom for Betty.
“Get lost you fucking loser!” Reggie knew he was not going to be able to ignore this jerk much longer.
However, Archie did something worse than fighting with Reggie. Blame it on the music, blame it on jealousy, or just blame it on the alcohol, but before you knew it, Archie got on one knee and presented Betty with a nice sized diamond engagement ring. Archie told Jughead earlier that day that he had gotten the ring from his mother because he told her he wanted to ask Betty to be his wife. “I can’t let Reggie take her from me. I think he was planning on asking her to marry or hook up with him, so I have to beat him to it.”
Archie decided that he could not let Reggie steal Betty away from him, and he was ready to do whatever it took to keep them apart. Mary Andrews had always planned to give her mother’s wedding and engagement rings to Archie for his bride. Mary loved Betty and was only too happy to give him the rings.
“Betty, I don’t want you to be with Reggie. You belong with me. Please marry me after we finish college. I love you.” Reggie hooted at this, knowing Betty would shoot Archie down fast. Give him hell, Bets. He laughed as he waited for her to give Archie what for. After a moment’s hesitation, Betty gave Archie her answer.
“Yes! Yes, Archie I’d love to marry you!” She ran into his arms and he lifted her in the air as they kissed.
Jason and Veronica were stunned. Reggie, well, he was blind-sided. The three of them had their mouths open wide in absolute shock. Some people cheered, others were decidedly puzzled, saying thing like: “Why? Why would Betty want to marry Archie?”
Jughead blinked. He had always hated when Archie cheated on Betty. Now here Archie was asking her to marry him, taking her away from Reggie, forever. Well, Jughead was thinking, Archie finally got his revenge on Reggie. Jughead was watching Reggie and saw the pain in his face that he tried very hard not to show. Jughead watched as people came up to congratulate the newly engaged couple.
“Oh man Reggie...” Jughead had started to say, but Reggie’s face was like stone. He raised his hand to stop Jughead’s words of sympathy. Reggie did not dare say anything at that moment, but Jughead could see that Archie had utterly shattered Reggie’s heart and soul that night. Archie had also broken Veronica and Jason’s hearts.
Jason’s sister Cheryl had to hold Jason in their limo while he cried his heart out. He just wanted to go home. Jason did not want anyone to see him so weak. Reggie hid his feelings exceptionally well from almost everyone, except for Jughead-and Archie.
Slam dunk for the redhead, he gloated as he held Betty possessively. Reggie thought he and Betty had a marvelous thing going tonight. Now he saw he was wrong. For Reggie, more than the night was over. Reggie felt as if his life was over. He turned and left them all without another word.
Reggie Mantle never looked back. And he would never be the same again.
***
Betty was surprised to see Reggie walking away from her. “Isn’t it great Reg? Reggie? Reggie! Where are you going?” she called, appalled to see him leaving when they were going to go celebrate the upcoming wedding. He did not stop walking. “We’re going out to celebrate...” Reggie kept walking and it took every fiber of her being not to follow him. She was surprised at the look on Reggie’s face: he looked devastated. She hated to see anyone hurt especially as much as it appeared she hurt Reggie. Reggie was like a brother to her and she wanted him to be happy for her.
Why does Reggie look so upset? I guess he’s not happy for me because he hates Archie, Betty thought in dismay. She was so happy that Archie proposed to her, that she had failed to recall that he asked Veronica to the prom instead of her, and the intense sexual feelings she and Reggie had aroused in each other.
“Come on baby, forget about him. Let’s go celebrate.” Archie pulled her into his arms for a kiss. She immediately forgot about Reggie and returned his kiss with ardor.
After Archie’s shocking proposal to Betty, Veronica had taken off in her limo, alone. She was crying her heart out. Archie had been a vital part of Veronica’s life, even though Betty had always loved Archie more. Veronica was a much more selfish person, and did nothing for Archie without there being some reward in it for herself as well. She had always been Archie’s number one girlfriend.
“How could you do this to me, Archie? She wailed. It was very rare that Veronica did not get her way, especially with men. Her own father was completely wrapped around her finger.
*** As soon as he returned home that evening, Reggie began making arrangements to leave town as soon as possible. He had originally planned on spending the summer with Betty and their friends, celebrating his birthday and just hanging out before going to Columbia University, but now he felt he had to leave right away or go crazy, so he informed his parents he was going to summer school and relax in New York City instead of partying in Riverdale for the summer.“What? I-I’m glad son you're getting a head start in school, but what bought this on? I thought you were spending the summer here with Betty?” Victoria just heard about Betty’s engagement from Alice, and was concerned about her son.
“No time like the present, Mom. I want to get a head start if I’m going to be a big time publisher, right? I really need to shake the dust of this town off me.” With that, the Mantles prepared to take their son to New York, three months earlier than planned.
*** Betty tried to continue her friendship with Reggie, but he found it was just too much to ask of him. He refused to answer her calls or come out his room when she came over. He even changed his number, and asked his parents to lie for him whenever she came to the house, which they refused to do. So he did not respond when they called him to come downstairs if she came by. He did not open his door when she pounded on it, demanding to speak to her. He drowned out the sound of her pleas and tears by going into his bathroom and turning up his music as loud as he could stand. She did this every day until he left for New York.Reggie made plans to live in New York City permanently. He would devote his time to assisting his father in expanding the Mantle publishing to New York City and afar. “Dad, I’m done with living in Riverdale. Why don’t you and Mom move to New York with me? If you want to see me, you and Mom will have to come to there because I’m not coming back here.” They both knew their son well and knew he would keep his word. He never planned to step foot in Riverdale again, not as long as Betty and Archie Andrews lived there.
“Son, what’s wrong? Why are you set on moving so far away from us? Is it because Betty’s marrying Archie? If so, fight for her!” his father told him. “Dad, it’s too late. I waited too long to let her know how I feel. I don’t want to discuss it any more, alright? Actually I don’t care to discuss Betty and her loser finance ever again, with anyone.”
Vicky tried to get her son to talk to her about Betty, but he would not open up. Jughead had tried to talk to him about his feelings, but Reggie would not talk about Betty to anyone.
“Look Jughead. Pass the word: I do not wish to discuss Betty or Archie ever again. That includes you. If you want to be my friend, help me with this, okay?”
“Okay man, whatever you say,” Jughead was sad, but passed the word to their friends: “Don’t talk about Archie and Betty if you want to remain on Reggie’s good side.”
*** Reggie was frantic to leave town because it was extremely hard for him to see Betty with Archie together as an engaged couple and jealousy was driving him insane. He knew his friendship with Betty was over, which was the real reason why he wanted to leave town as soon as his parents could arrange it. Just before leaving for New York, Reggie could not resist playing a very wicked trick on Archie. He let the air out of all Archie’s tires on a nasty, rainy day.“Hey, man, need some help?” Reggie asked him, as he just happened to be driving by in time to see the stranded Archie. “Yes I do, thanks Reg. I forgot my cell phone. Can you call a tow truck for me?”
“Sure, I’ll call a tow truck for you, Archie-boy. Sorry, I can’t drop you off anywhere. I have an urgent appointment and I can’t be late.”
“That’s alright. I appreciate your help,” Archie said gratefully. Then Reggie drove off, splashing Archie as he passed. Reggie had not called a tow truck for two hours, leaving Archie shivering and far from getting help. Archie had a nasty case of bronchitis for two weeks behind that escapade. Reggie felt a twinge of guilt, but it passed as quickly as it came. He really wasn't sorry for almost causing Archie to get sick.
“How could you do that to Archie, Reggie? You could have caused him to get pneumonia! That’s not like you.” Betty ran into him in the street a few days later, and was angry he would do such a thing.
“Too bad he didn’t get ill and die. I think he would have done you a favor if he had!”
“Reggie! I know you didn’t mean that! What’s the matter with you? Did we do something to offend you? Or did I? Why are you acting like this? I need you to help me with the wedding arrangements. You’re my brother and I want you to be my man of honor. I miss you so much, Reg. Talk to me!” Betty was pleading with him by this time.
“I’m not your brother!” Reggie blurted out, really angry. “Sorry, I can’t be in the wedding. I’m leaving for New York in a few days. Have a nice life. There are too many chicks in New York City to conquer, and I can’t wait to get started.” Reggie was laughing like a maniac to hide the fact he would miss her terribly.
“Reggie, you never said you were leaving for New York so soon! I need you! Please stay?” He hated to hear her sound so hurt, but he could not pretend he was alright with her marrying someone else. Hot tears rolled down his cheeks.
“Look Betty, I have to go. You have ole Archie to help you plan your wedding. You don’t need me. Take care.” He had to leave before she saw the tears in his eyes.
“Reggie...Wait!” Reggie walked quickly away. He had to get away, and soon before he made a complete fool of himself in front of her.
***
When Betty came to his house the next day, his mother told her he had already left for New York.
“Oh Mrs. Mantle, why did he leave us like that? He never even said goodbye to me. I don’t know where he’s staying or anything,” she wailed in anguish.
“I’m sorry, honey. I don’t know what came over him, leaving us like that. Give him time, he’ll come around,” Mrs. Mantle said, doubtfully. Betty went into his mother’s arms and both women cried their eyes out. Reggie leaving town so suddenly left a void in both of their hearts.
