Just Call Me Eve

When I was able to get a date, it was usually because the boy  was bribed, or had a bet to win. I know this because boys were dumb, and liked to talk. So I heard about it, OK?

I didn’t care. I wanted to go out like my friends, so I pretended I didn’t know the real reason they asked me out. We would actually have fun  on these dates , but the boy would never tell anyone else  that. None of the boys would want their friends to know they had a good time with Big Ethel.

I  towered over every boy that went to Riverdale Elementary School.

This actually changed when we were all in Junior High . Moose Mason began to fill out and was taller than I. Jughead was almost as tall as I was by this time. And there was Reggie mantle. But he was off limits. I was not his type, though he didn’t tease me as much as he used to.

Moose would ask me out sometimes, but I refused because I knew it was to make Midge, his very petite and cute girlfriend, angry. Though she did not have any reason to envy me. I didn't need anymore ridicule than I had already.

Notice I didn't say 'jealous'.

Besides, Midge had always been nice to me, so I wouldn't go out with her boyfriend.

Betty, Nancy, and I hung out a lot, except when Veronica Lodge wanted to monopolize their  time. Veronica liked to talk about her dates with Archie to Betty, every chance she got.  Rubbing it in you might say, and show off her wealth to everyone . Betty only cared about Archie. She never envied Veronica anything else but him. I just hated Veronica Lodge for everything.

If Veronica had a sleep over, I knew I was invited only because of Betty. Betty had told Veronica that if  I didn't come, then she wouldn't come either. What a friend Betty was!

Veronica would simply ignore me at these sleepovers. The other girls who came always would be nice to me. Besides Betty, I was friends with Nancy Woods, Midge Klump and Sabrina Spellman.

At one of these sleepovers, I overheard Veronica telling Midge,

"I am so getting so sick of Betty blackmailing me to having that ugly loser to my house. I have a reputation, after all. I can't let anyone know I have such an ugly, thing' in my home"

"Man ,Ron, that's cold. You really can be a bitch sometimes. Ethel is cool. You never talk to her to know really know  her. How she looks shouldn't matter"

"Well it does matter. I won’t be seen around someone so hideous. I am not letting Betty blackmail me about that doofus  coming over here again after tonight. I feel sick, just looking at  'it', uh her"

“Really Ron. Ethel is not that ugly. She is just going through an awkward phase." Midge sounded disgusted by Veronica.

I have hated (even more than I already did) Veronica Lodge since then. I refuse to speak to her.  I insisted I wanted to go home after  I heard what she said.

Betty was puzzled why I wanted to leave, until I told her later what I heard.

Betty refused to go to Ron's house after that. I told her not to let it change her and Ron's friendship.

"I don't want to have such bigoted friends Ethel. How dare she! You are the best, and  anyone would be proud to know you. I don't want to be Ron's friend anymore"

I did notice that even though Betty would hang out with Ron, they were not as close as they used to be.

Betty would not change her friendship with Veronica because of Archie, but she did because of Veronica's meanness to me. That was Betty for you.

And Nancy, well, “ I hate that snobbish bitch. She doesn’t have to worry about me either. I can imagine what she says about me!” Nancy also refused to go to Veronica’s sleepovers.

I told you they were my BFF’s.
