Chapter 5: New World Order

*****************************************
A loud whooshing sound reverberated throughout the enormous laboratory as the liquid from each of the two dozen glass tubes was flushed out through large pipes connected to their backs. Poison Ivy stepped over the nearest growth pod, gazing intently through the glass with an anticipatory grin on her lips.
The nude human looking form inside slowly lowered to its hands and knees as the green liquid gradually emptied out. It took a couple of long breaths as the oxygen mask was automatically removed from over its mouth. After a few moments the glass covering the pod opened up and slid around into the back of the pod.
Ivy eyed the creature carefully as it slowly but deliberately stood up to face her. Seeing it in the bright light, unobscured by the nutrient liquid, it was even more magnificent than she could’ve hoped for. She could almost feel the strength and power resonating from its body. At least the scientists she had enslaved had known exactly what they were doing.
Now came the real test. Had the mental programming and conditioning taken as well as the physical components? If not and with the amount of power even this small part of her new army possessed, they would make quick work of her and the entire laboratory complex. Though she gave no hint of worry on the outside, there was always a chance that her creations’ minds might not have developed correctly.
If that were the case then at best they would just be mindless vegetables wandering about aimlessly. And at worst they would be raging, uncontrollable monstrosities that would destroy any and everything in their path.
“What is your purpose?” the villainess asked moving even closer, projecting an air of utter confidence.
It stood silently for a couple seconds as if studying her intently. Then it dropped to one knee in front of her, its head bowed reverently.
“To serve you, mistress,” it answered in a clear, intelligent sounding voice.
A moment later the same exact sentence echoed up and down the line of pods as each and every one of her creations answered in kind. They were all kneeling in the same manner as the first.
Almost at once Ivy could feel the strong connection between her mind and theirs. They weren’t quite like plant minds, though they were similar, but far more complex. Still, she could feel an overwhelming desire from each one of her new children to please and obey her. It felt so deeply ingrained in them that she was certain nothing could break the bond.
Ivy’s smile grew wider.
“Step forth into the world that you will help me change forever,” she commanded.
Without hesitation they stepped from the pods onto the laboratory floor in two neat lines. All eyes were on the villainess as she looked over her new army with growing pride.
“It is the beginning of a glorious new era, my children. You are just the first of many that will aid me in cleansing mother earth of the plague called mankind and turn it into the utopia it was meant to be. There is much to do before we get to that point however and there are many that would oppose us and our goals. We will systematically eliminate these obstacles starting today-and with our combined efforts we will be victorious!”
The roar of approval that followed was music to her ears.

Justice League Watchtower
The leather heavy bag swung violently back and forth on its thick chain as Black Canary punished it with another brutal roundhouse kick. She was alone in one of the many large state of the art workout rooms on the satellite base. There were of course more elaborate and durable training areas for the Justice League members with abilities to toss cars across a state but this suited her just fine. It was where the more “street level” members tended to work out.
The chain groaned in protest from its heavy duty anchor in the ceiling as the beautiful blonde hammered the bag with a lightning quick combination of kicks and spinning back fists. Her long golden hair whipped about as her shapely, well muscled legs struck with deadly accuracy.
She hadn’t heard from Green Arrow in a while though she knew he had been busy. Ollie hadn’t had any luck tracking Ivy down in Gotham. All his sources and leads had dried up and he was beginning to think she wasn’t even in the city at all anymore.
A small wall monitor flashed a message signaling someone’s arrival to the base. Then the central Watchtower computer AI confirmed, in its female electronic voice, that a League member had just arrived. She barely gave it a second thought. There were usually people going in and out through the teleporters at all times of the day and she was too focused on finishing her workout.
Dinah wiped the light perspiration from her brow and turned to grab her water bottle off a nearby bench. Something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. A large silhouette had seemingly materialized in the darkened doorway and sent surprised jolt through her body.
“Oh!” she said almost losing her grip on the bottle.
The shadowed form paused for a moment then calmly stepped into the room.
“Superman…you startled me,” she said, quickly bringing the water bottle to her lips to regain her composure.
“Hi, Dinah” he said absently, still hanging back near the door. “Sorry…”
He seemed to stare at her with a strange look in his piercing blue eyes. It felt to her like he was almost staring through her.
She blushed slightly under his unwavering gaze. She wasn’t even sure why. But something seemed a bit off. He seemed different somehow as if his mind were occupied with other things. Usually he was quick with a friendly comment or good conversation but he just stood there. He wasn’t normally so quiet or, for lack of a better term, enigmatic. She left that up to the likes of Batman.
“Is there something wrong?” she finally asked going back to the heavy bag.
“Everything is fine,” he said, his gaze still unwavering. “I like watching.”
Something about the tone of his voice and the way he said ‘watching’ sent a slight chill up her spine but she quickly disregarded it.
“Well are you just going to stand there or do you want to go a few rounds?” she asked, changing the subject. “I have to finish my workout and ,besides, I might be able to teach you a thing or two.”
His eyebrows raised slightly.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” he asked.
“Look, I’ve sparred with Diana many times before and it was fine. If Wonder Woman can do it then you can too. I could use a good sparring warm up.”
Black Canary made her way across the room to one of the large white padded sparring mats. Superman followed, rarely taking his gaze from her.
Dinah took up her position across from Superman on the black circle near the center of the mat.
“I know Batman taught you a few things but I’ve trained with a bunch of different masters too-
Wildcat, O Sensei, and even Lady Shiva. I figure it couldn’t hurt for you to learn some more techniques. It could help you in a fight where your opponent is equal in strength or in a pinch if you lose your powers.”
“Hold on a sec,” she said, putting up an index finger.
Superman watched intently as Canary peeled off her black leather jacket and tossed it to the side. Underneath she wore a modified matching black bustier that only accentuated her lean and toned athletic figure. She began to lightly stretch which only gave him a better view of her firm breasts and long powerful fishnet clad legs. The woman had a great body- graceful and curvaceous yet strong and powerful from years of rigorous training.
After a couple minutes she was ready.
Dinah opened her mouth to speak when she noticed something. Superman’s eyes flicked discreetly down and up over her body. Was Superman really just checking me out? she thought to herself. No that couldn’t be it. She had to be just imagining things.
Then she remembered his x-ray vision and the realization that her costume didn’t actually provide her body much in the way of coverage. She flushed at the thought though she quickly pushed it out of her mind.
The very idea was ridiculous. If there was one person in the entire League she could trust not to abuse his powers it was Superman. As a happily married man with the highest integrity she had ever known, Superman was never one to gawk at the numerous attractive super heroines walking the halls and generally occupying the Watchtower at any given time.
The fact was that though he was incredibly handsome, she had never really thought of him in any romantic sort of way- at least not in a long time. When they had first met his good looks and incredible charisma had caught her interest- as it had almost any other female in the business- but it was quickly apparent that Superman only had eyes for Lois. And ever since then he had always seemed like nothing more than a truly great friend without a prurient thought in his being for any other woman.
“Okay I know that I can’t physically hurt you but we’ll just work on some of the basics. First up is how to block high attacks- punches and kicks. Go ahead and show me what Batman taught you.”
Dinah fell back into a fighting stance then launched a right kick that came arcing up toward Superman’s face. She stopped short a couple of inches away from his jaw though he hadn’t budged at all.
She frowned. “Didn’t Batman show you any of this?”
“Uh huh,” he said nodding absently.
Dinah shrugged. “Alright let’s go through some holds and pressure points and how to escape them then. I saw during your last fight with Black Adam that you had some trouble once he put an arm lock on you from behind- though you were able to power through it, this way might be easier.”
He nodded and approached her from behind as she waved him over.
She instructed him on how to properly apply the arm lock and he did so easily. It was then that a sudden feeling of uneasiness crept over. Superman seemed to be breathing in ragged gasps and he seemed even more agitated than before. His grip tightened uncomfortably.
********************************************
Superman had flown to the Watchtower in a cloudy haze of mixed feelings. He almost didn’t realize where he was until he was roaming the long futuristic corridors. It felt like some unseen force was propelling him in a certain direction. In his disoriented state he couldn’t seem to put up much of a struggle.
He had walked these hallways for years and they were almost like a second home. Yet why did it seem so eerily silent and feel so ominous now?
The pounding in his skull had only strengthened ever since he had left Kara behind. Whatever had almost made him do something terrible to his cousin was seemingly guiding him now. But whereas the earlier incident had been subtle this time it seemed far more direct like a bulldozer shoving him along.
Ivy had mentioned something about using the spores he had inhaled earlier to do something…but why was it so hard to remember? Why couldn’t he think straight?
Superman was surprised to find his seemingly aimless trek stop at the entrance to one of the training rooms. There was only a single occupant inside. He paused in the doorway to watch as Black Canary attacked the heavy bag with an impressive repertoire of moves. For some reason he found himself staring at her as traitorous thoughts crept into his head. Even worse, the tingling sensation in his crotch had renewed itself and the overwhelming feeling of lust was washing over him even more strongly than before.
It’s time to satisfy that hunger, Superman.
The voice. It too had returned and sounded just a bit louder and stronger than before. It absolutely compelled him to listen and obey.
You will take all that pent up lust and aggression and take it out on her.
He struggled through a brief conversation with Dinah about learning new fighting techniques even as the voice urged him on. It was getting hard to hear his colleague above the voice echoing in his head. He watched with growing hunger as Black Canary led him over to the training mats and peeled off her leather jacket and warmed up in front of him.
Suddenly Dinah appeared completely naked. He gasped in surprise. Without realizing it, he had somehow turned on his x-ray vision and was peering past her clothes to the incredible body underneath. His instincts told him to immediately turn off the power but he couldn’t. Something kept encouraging him to look and he kept the power active as his eyes darted up and down her feminine form, drinking in every sensual curve with growing lust.
He noticed with sudden alarm at the growing bulge beginning to strain against his red briefs and he fought with minimal success to suppress it. Luckily she hadn’t noticed.
When their eyes met again, she was eyeing him suspiciously but the look quickly passed.
The small part of his brain that was still thinking straight had to admire her spirit. With the exception of her sonic canary cry, she was a normal human in every other respect. But that never stopped her from performing her duties and though she wasn’t bullet proof he had never seen her back down from anyone or anything.
He found his eyes sliding down to her powerfully built black fishnet clad thighs as she instructed him on what to do next. His attention then turned to her well rounded and shapely ass as she turned her back to him and he absently applied the arm lock.
With growing apprehension, Superman immediately noticed how close he was to her. His breathing quickened as her tight ass lightly brushed against his crotch. It was completely accidental but it only seemed to increase the tingling even more.
“You’re so beautiful, Dinah” he uttered quietly before realizing he had spoken aloud.
She whirled around, taking her arm out of his grip in the process, with complete surprise in her brilliant blue eyes.
“Um, thank you” she said not knowing exactly how to respond.
She knew he wasn’t one to joke around in that manner and he especially wouldn’t say something like that. Still she would be lying to herself if she wasn’t a little bit flattered. It was Superman complimenting her of all people but she felt a bit uncomfortable nonetheless.
She took a couple of steps away toward the door.
“I…I think I should go now. Ollie is…um…waiting to hear from me.”
He subtly maneuvered her toward the nearby wall placed a large chiseled arm to block her way.
“Don’t go,” he said gazing at her again with those would piercing eyes.
She instinctively backed up against the wall, her mind fumbling to process the strange turn of events.
“Look, Superman, I’m flattered and everything but you’re married and I’m with Ollie. I mean you‘re a great guy and I think almost any woman would be more than happy to be with you but…”
Take her, Superman. Do it now! Now!
The voice blocked out the rest of Dinah’s words. The hunger and powerful lust needed to be satisfied. It would not be denied this time. The combination of the urging voice and almost unbearable tingling in his crotch was too much.
He forcefully grabbed her by the arm and was on her in an instant like an animal, pressing his lips to hers and hungrily groping her breasts with this other hand. The more she struggled the firmer his almost literally iron clad grip tightened on her wrist. She fought desperately, trying to push him away but it was hopeless. He was just so strong. Even without powers a man of his size would’ve been a chore to move but with his strength she couldn’t hope to do much of anything.
His free hand was sliding all over her body, from her breasts to her waist and then down between her legs. Finally Dinah got over her initial and utter shock at what was happening.
“Stop it, Superman, you’re hurting me!” she pleaded, in between unwanted kisses.
He ignored her and kept on like a mindless beast, kissing her lips and then moving down her neck.
“Please stop!” she shouted, growing more desperate.
Having no other choice, Dinah inhaled deeply. A moment later a piercing wave of sound ricocheted throughout the entire room.
“CLARK STOP!!”
She added the words to the end of a sonic Canary cry at point blank range. The force of it was enough to snap Superman’s head back, his enhanced hearing making it even more painful. Only the ultra sturdy construction of the Watchtower kept the place from breaking apart.
He froze.
With immense relief she saw some measure of sanity returning to his eyes. Then he reeled back in absolute horror.
It was like his body had been moving on its own and he had somehow been completely unaware. He quickly released his painful hold on her wrist and felt a stab of guilt at what he saw. Black Canary was tenderly holding her arm- a large purple bruise forming around her wrist.
“Oh god, I’m so sorry Dinah,” he said, his voice laced with guilt. “I-I don’t know what came over me. I wasn’t in my right- please…let me take you to the infirmary.”
She recoiled in panic as he stepped toward her. There was a look in her eyes that hurt and confused him. It was a look of pure fear. She had never looked at him like that before. It cut him more deeply than any words could.
“No, I’ll be fine,” she said cautiously, seemingly wanting to keep him calm. “I can make it to the infirmary on my own. I-I think you should go now, Clark.”
“I’m sorry…” he repeated, before quickly flying past her and out of the room.
************************************
Later
Black Canary winced slightly as she massaged her still tender wrist. The swelling and most of the bruising had gone down after she had applied a special cold compress given to her by the Atom in the infirmary to speed up healing. Dinah had carefully dodged the question about how she had received the bruises, chalking it up to overzealous training. She slipped her leather jacket back on to avoid any unwanted questions about her injury.
She was still in shock over what had happened earlier with Superman. There was definitely something wrong with him as he would never in a million years harm one of his friends. Something or someone must have been influencing or controlling him. Either that or that wasn’t him that attacked her earlier. Either way she was determined to get to the bottom of the matter and wouldn’t rest until she had.
After rapidly keying in a few commands on the main console of the control room, she activated the homing device built into Superman’s Justice League earpiece. Every League member had one in case of emergencies and this seemed to be a good a time as any to use it.
A moment later a fast moving red dot, indicating his location on a world map, flashed up on one of the screens. He was heading due north, probably to the Fortress of Solitude, she reasoned.
However the sudden beeping from another part of the control console quickly diverted her attention. She flipped a smaller side monitor on and saw a familiar face.
“Dinah, there was some sort of earthquake or explosion in downtown Gotham just now,” Green Arrow said, sounding worried. “I felt the ground rumble right before I saw a huge fireball and plume of smoke rising in the distance. Can you get me some intel on it?”
A part of her wanted to immediately tell Ollie what had happened in the training room but she decided against it for the moment. This new development sounded like it would require Green Arrow’s full attention.
“I’ll check the scanners and see if I can find out what happened, Ollie” Black Canary answered hesitantly. “It shouldn’t take more than a-”
“Hold on a second,” he said, cutting her off. “There’s something coming down from the sky. It looks like a person…”
She spotted the blazingly fast speck on the monitor though she couldn’t tell exactly who or what it was. Green Arrow seemed to notice at the same moment as she did that it was heading directly toward him. And it showed no signs of slowing down.
Ollie turned and began frantically racing in the opposite direction toward the other edge of the rooftop. He wasn’t going to make the jump in time.
“Dinah, get me out of here now!” he shouted.
A bright beam of yellow light engulfed his entire body as he was teleported away just before a deafening crash leveled the whole building and sent it crumbling to its foundation on the street below.
*********************************************
For the first time in a while, Superman was finally able to think clearly. The quiet, crisp air of the Arctic seemed to help. The voice, Ivy’s voice, had ceased to plague him for the moment, but that only left him to focus on the sheer guilt he felt over what he had done to Dinah. Thankfully she had been able to snap him to his senses before he had hurt her even more severely.
The bitterly cold winds whipped past him as he flew at blazing speed over endless expanses of pure white snow and ice toward the Fortress of Solitude. Once there he intended to use the advanced scanners to find out what exactly the spores were doing to him and find a way to either destroy them or get them out of his body. He would’ve preferred to let some of the more knowledgeable members of the team examine him but at the moment he couldn’t trust himself around the people he cared about. Once he was cured of the spores harmful effects, his mind would finally be at ease.
Then he would deal with Ivy personally.
He was already more than tired of being manipulated by her like a puppet. So much as thinking about how she had already gotten the better of him twice now and her arrogant condescending attitude was enough to make his blood boil. To make matters worse, she had made him hurt one of his close friends and colleagues.
As the towering crystalline Fortress came into view over the horizon, Superman thought he saw a shadow flicker beside him for an instant and then disappear. He scanned the air around him but there was nothing. Of course there wouldn’t be, he thought feeling a bit foolish. Nothing would be able to keep up with him at the speed he was going- especially way out here where there was nothing but endless sheets of glaciers and snow.
With renewed determination he increased his speed a bit, anxious to rid himself of Ivy’s evil influence while he was still able. There was a faint flitter of movement out of the corner of his eye. Then suddenly he was falling from the sky, his ears still ringing from a loud boom, and his ribs were throbbing with intense pain. It took him a moment to realize the loud boom had been from something smashing into him from the side at a very high rate of speed.
He fought to right himself but the momentum from whatever had hit him was making it quite difficult. His body arced off course and was plummeting downward like a missile.
The shadow he saw earlier reappeared above him as he was falling and flashed toward him again. Pain exploded in his chest as his velocity increased uncontrollably toward the ice below. He slammed into the whiteness with an earsplitting explosion, throwing up huge sheets of ice in every direction.

Justice League Watchtower
A blaring alarm sounded in the control room as the multitude of monitors lit up like Christmas lights. Urgent alerts and newsfeeds were plastered over every one.
“Ollie, look at this,” Dinah said pointing toward the screens. “Its not just Gotham that’s under attack, its happening all over the place- Star City, Coast City, St. Roch, Keystone, New York, Los Angeles…almost everywhere except Metropolis.”
“I don’t believe it,” he answered grimly. “Every one of those cities is being leveled as we speak. Did you send out the Emergency Alpha Protocol?”
“Already sent it a few minutes ago and I asked Oracle to get it out to anyone else she could think of too,” she responded. “Practically every member of the League is out there trying to stop whatever it is from spreading even further.”
So far the monitors had only picked up passing glimpses of the attackers. It was little more than watching shadows darting about razing buildings, bridges, and homes with wreck less abandon. There was no telling how many innocent people had already been killed in the over dozen cities that had been struck. Whoever was behind the attacks had been well coordinated.
Ollie’s grip tightened on his bow.
“We should be out there right now, Dinah. We should be trying to help.”
Black Canary circled her arms around his neck and rested her head against his chest. She felt a bit more at ease as he affectionately returned the embrace.
“I know,” she replied softly. “Trust me, I would rather be out on the streets helping too but J‘onn said he needed someone up here directing superhero traffic and keeping an eye on progress. For now, that‘s what we‘re going to do.”
“Besides,” she said eyeing the sheer amount of destruction on the screens, “I don’t think we’d be able to do a whole lot against things with that much sheer power.”
************************************
Superman groggily picked himself out of the enormous crater he had left in the snow. His chest and ribs still throbbed with pain. He couldn’t remember being hit that hard in a long time. Whoever had attacked him possessed incredible strength as well as speed to be able to blindside him like that.
“Mistress Ivy requires your presence, Superman” a firm, feminine voice called from the air high above him.
Still a bit dazed, the Man of Steel gazed up into a pair of inhumanly green eyes. They looked down on him with what he thought was utter disdain.
“You have something she needs,” the woman said with a barely perceptible but mocking grin. “I suggest you come quietly with me.”
