Chapter Five: Reality Sinks In
It was only due to years of late night and incredibly early morning phone calls from Kris that Andrea was able to answer the phone before it had even finished the first ring. “Mmello?” she murmured groggily, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the darkness of her room.
“Hey, did I wake ya?”
“Raph?” She sat up and craned her neck to check the clock on her bedside table. 2:10 am.
“Yeah. It’s me.”
“No…well, yeah, you did wake me. But that’s okay.” Folding her legs underneath her, Andrea made an attempt to calm her fluttering heart as she situated the blankets around her. “What’s up? Is everything okay?”
“Oh, yeah. Everything’s fine. I just…” His voice drifted off and he cursed softly. “I dunno.”
“Raph, what’s wrong?” she asked, worry firmly taking root in the pit of her stomach, a deep, gut wrenching feeling that made her nervousness seem irrelevant.
“Listen, I need to talk to someone. Mind if I come over?”
“Not at all. I’ll wait for you in the living room, okay?”
“Yeah. I’ll be there in a bit. And…thanks Andrea.”
She smiled into the darkness. “Any time Raph.”
After she hung up, Andrea stared at the phone for a matter of seconds, then jumped from the bed and made an almost frantic dash for the bathroom. She figured she had at least ten minutes before he got there and that was ten minutes she would not be wasting.
As quietly as possible, so as not to wake Catey, Kris or Samantha, she set about making herself look decent. She brushed her hair until it shone like spun gold, refreshed her deodorant, swished some mouth wash and applied a not-to-overwhelming dab of perfume on her wrists and neck. The last stop she made was back in her room where she exchanged her worn t-shirt and boxers for a pair of gray sweatpants and a maroon tank top, snagged the baby monitor from the bedside table and slipped it into the pocket of her sweatpants, then peeked in on Sammy to make sure she was still sound asleep.
With minutes to spare, she calmly made her way out to the living room, unlocked the balcony door and then went to the couch where she half sat, half leaned against the back and waited for Raph.
He showed up not even two minutes later, dressed in his usual hooded sweatshirt and baggy jeans. She waited for him to come in, waited for him to close the door and then she pushed off the couch and took a couple steps toward him. “What’s wrong Raph?” she asked as she took note of his strained features and the tension that seemed to be radiating off him.
He shrugged his shoulders, then shook his head slowly from side to side. “I don’t know what went wrong here. We were tellin’ Master Splinter about you guys…he kinda walked in on us while we were practicin’ and heard Mikey talkin’ about Catey so we didn’t have much of a choice.
“Instead of takin’ it like we thought he would, he got mad and told us we were being ‘very irresponsible.’ Of course, that got everyone worked up and the next think you know everyone’s yellin’. And Leo, out of nowhere, starts playin’ the good son and siding with Splinter even when he said we shouldn’t see you guys again. He just…he pisses me off damn it. And I don’t see why-.”
Before he could get another word out, Andrea walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. The gesture was unexpected and it took him a while to understand why she was hugging him. She was trying to comfort him. Having never been on the receiving end of things such as this, he wasn’t exactly sure how to handle it. The whole hugging thing made the hurt go away though, so with a deep sigh, he wrapped his arms around her slim waist and rested his head on her shoulder.
“Feel better?” she asked softly.
“Getting’ there.” It was an understatement. Compared to how he had felt before, this was heaven. “I think I get why people do this all the time. Feels great.”
Andrea laughed and pulled back a bit. “I know. I’m a complete sucker for a good hug. My dad always told me that a person should never have less than eight hugs a day. Why don’t we move to the couch and you can tell me what happened in a little more detail.” She gave him a gentle shove in the direction of the couch. “Go, sit down. I’ll get you something to drink.”
“Okay.” Raph went to the couch and sat down, then turned to watch Andrea as she pulled a bottle of beer and a bottle of water from the fridge. She amazed him with the way she moved and talked, the confidence that showed in every action she made. And her heartfelt concern…it was like balm to his bruised emotions. He hadn’t been sure he was doing the right thing when he called her and asked to come over, but now that he was here he knew he’d made the right decision.
“Here,” Andrea handed him the beer, came around the couch and sat down beside him. “So, spill hun.”
Raph took a deep breath and tried to recall what exactly had made him so angry. “Like I said…I’m not sure how it happened. One minute we’re trainin’and everyone’s happy. The next-.” He sighed and shook his head. “Everything got out of control so fast and for once it wasn’t my fault. Don and Mikey were practicing and Don was givin’ poor Mikey a hard time ‘cuz he was too busy thinkin’ about Catey to pay attention. Course, that stopped practice and Mikey started listin’all the reasons why thinkin’ about Catey was more fun than weapons training.”
“That sounds incredibly sweet,” Andrea murmured, secretly overjoyed for her youngest friend.
“Yeah…guess it was. We were all havin’ fun but then Master Splinter comes in and asks who Catey is. So we all take turns tellin’ him about you guys…how we met you…leavin’ out the whole truth or dare part of course. He got real quiet and then told us we weren’t supposed to see you guys anymore.”
He shook his head again, hearing the angry shouts of his brothers, remembering the confusion he’d felt over Leo’s betrayal and the horrible names he’d called him because of it. “All hell kinda broke loose. I didn’t even see it comin’ when Leo sided with Splinter. I thought he liked Kris. It doesn’t make any sense.”
Andrea took his hand and squeezed it lightly. “Don’t worry Raph. We’ll help you get this all sorted out.”
“Mind if I ask how, exactly, you plan on doin’ that?”
She made a soft humming noise and turned to face him, resting an arm over the back of the couch. “Well, why don’t you just stay here tonight? In the morning we’ll all go home with you and show Splinter we’re harmless. Maybe he’ll change his mind after meeting us.”
“And Leo?”
“We’ll let Kris take care of Leo,” she replied with a devious little smirk.
Raph laughed, feeling the tension from the past two hours slide away. “Thanks Drea. I’m glad I called you.”
“I’m glad you called me too,” She murmured.
They smiled at each other then found it was quite impossible to break eye contact. The memory of what had transpired when they were last together was still relatively fresh and rose easily in their minds. And as if it weren’t bad enough that they were extremely attracted to each other, you also had the fact that Raph had only gotten his first taste of intimacy and he wanted more.
The sexual tension mounted in the silence until it became an almost visible thing. Then it shattered.
They moved simultaneously, practically pouncing on each other in their haste. In a matter of seconds and without once breaking the steamy kiss they’d started, Raph had Andrea on her back and halfway underneath him. She moaned and it drove him crazy. She writhed beneath him and turned his want to a desperate need. She slipped a hand under his shirt to caress his side with gentle fingertips and his entire body shuddered involuntarily.
“I missed you,” she admitted in a husky whisper as she arched her hips against him.
“Missed you more,” he replied without thinking. But it was the truth. He’d though of nothing else but her ever since the moment he’d left her standing on the balcony.
Breaking the kiss for a moment, Andrea reached behind her and pulled an elf doll with bells dangling from his hat out from under her.
Raph grinned. “Ya go Christmas shopping?”
“I warned them.” She tossed the elf aside. “Now…where were we?”
The heated kissing started up again, a sensual battle fought with teasing bites and slow, erotic caressing of their tongues. Their hands stole under each other’s shirts and explored. When his hand found and cupped her breast, she cried out softly and, as before on the balcony, Raph moved his mouth to her neck. Abandoning his ministrations after reducing her to a quivering mass of burning desire, he yanked the strap of her tank top away and slowly pulled it down over her shoulder. He couldn’t bring himself to expose her like that though. Not right now. So he settled for gently biting her though the thin fabric of her shirt. Andrea practically sobbed his name, clutched at him and her body arched, demanding more.
Then, they were kissing again, deeply, urgently, as if it was the last kiss they would ever share. Raph’s hand wandered over her flat stomach, then lower and lower still.
“Wait!”
Raph jerked his hand back and pulled away, staring down at her. “What?”
“I’m sorry. I just…oh lord.” Breathing heavily, her face flushed, Andrea covered her eyes with her hand and willed her body to calm down. “You hardly know me. Great impression I’m making, acting like a complete whore,” she muttered.
“Hey, come on now. Don’t do that,” he said. “It’s not like it was one sided.”
Removing her hand from her eyes, Andrea grinned up at him. “Very true. Have you no control of your hands at all?” He rolled his eyes and she laughed. “I’ll take that as a no. Come on-get up. I’ll pull the bed out of the couch for ya so you can have a place to sleep.”
They worked together and had the hide-a-bed out and made in minutes. Perching on the edge of the bed, Andrea watched Raph as he removed his sweatshirt and sais and set them on the end table beside the couch. She stared at him hungrily, her eyes roaming over his body, watching his impressive muscles shift with every movement he made. When he went to remove his jeans his hands stilled. He looked up, caught her watching him and she grinned wolfishly.
“Do ya mind?” he asked.
Andrea shook her head. “Not at all. Please…proceed.”
When he didn’t, but continued to watch her warily, she got up on her knees. “Come on now Raph,” she purred as she hooked her fingers through his belt loops and pulled him close. “You really don’t strike me as the shy type.”
“What type am I then?” he asked, resting his hands on her hips.
Her eyes narrowed in contemplation and she tilted her head to the side, studying him for a long while before answering. “You’re the strong, brooding type. You have a lot of pride…and a lot of honor…but more often than not, you’re ruled by your anger. Sound about right?”
His jaw dropped. “How did you do that?”
She shrugged as if understanding him so well in the amount of time she’d known him was no big deal. “I’m good at figuring people out. Want to hear more about yourself?”
He nodded slowly, still stunned. It wasn’t that he was looking for an ego trip. He was just curious as to what else she knew about him. Really damn curious.
“Okay. You’re stubborn as hell, cocky to a fault and although you give the outward appearance that you’re tough as nails, you’re a softie.”
This time he grinned. Apparently she knew almost everything about him personality-wise.
“You’re also extremely passionate.” She drew him closer, her voice lowering to a seductive purr. “And incredibly irresistible.”
“Irresistible?”
“Oh yes. Very.”
She rubbed her lips against his, her hand going to the button of his jeans. With kisses she distracted him as she worked on removing his jeans and then pulled him down onto the bed with her. It wasn’t her intention to let much else happen aside from a bit of heated kissing, so she ended it with a quick peck and used her leg to gently shove him off her. Facing each other, their legs entwined, his arm under her head and the other around her waist and her hand against his chest, they smiled. “So, this your first time in bed with a woman?” she asked conversationally.
“Yup.”
She laughed, snuggling closer. Her eyes fell to his chest and she started tracing the contours of his shell, wondering briefly if he was able to feel it. It wasn’t rock hard as she thought it would be, or as cold. It was more like a living part of him than a protective shell. Odd, she hadn’t expected that.
Sensing his gaze on her, she looked up and was surprised to see his expression drawn in a confused frown. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t get what you see in me.” He came right out with it, no muss, no fuss. Just the straightforward truth. “I’m a-.”
Andrea silenced him by laying her hand over his mouth. “I know what you are and it doesn’t matter. You know all those things I just said about you?” He nodded. “That’s what I see in you. That’s why I like you. There’s other reasons, of course, but those are the big ones.” She moved her hand away from his mouth and ran it over his jaw line. “Is that going to be enough for you?”
“Yeah,” he said, somewhat hoarsely.
His heart, so used to feeling empty, so used to needing more than the love of his family, ached with the new sensations her words caused. He wanted to tell her he loved her, but didn’t know what love was. He did know, however, that it felt wonderful to be near her. He pulled her closer and was rewarded with a smile she seemed to reserve just for him. “Tell me about you,” he said.
“Okay. I was raised on a farm by two very loving and open parents…”
And so they spend the night talking, learning about each other-hobbies, likes, dislikes, dreams, nightmares, worst fears, embarrassing moments-they learned it all. And when the sun struggled to rise, pushing its vibrant rays out over the horizon, they fell asleep.
Andrea was uncertain of what woke her hours later but she knew she didn’t want to be awake. She wanted to keep sleeping, wrapped safely in Raph’s arms, feeling his breath against her neck. She fought the wakeful state, moving closer to Raph and burrowing her head in the pillow. It didn’t work. Damn it anyway. She opened her eyes, squinting against the light and Kris grinned back at her.
“Well, this is interesting, wouldn’t you agree Catey?” the dark haired woman asked, barley managing to conceal a laugh.
“Oh, I agree alright,” Catey said from somewhere above her. Andrea looked up and there she was, leaning over the couch with an all too cheerful smile on her face and Sammy propped on her hip. Mumbling several colorful curses, for she was not at all a morning person, Andrea tried to sit up. A strong arm around her waist immediately pulled her back down.
“Mommy…turta!” Sammy shrieked, her hands waving in excitement as she reached for the sleeping terrapin.
Andrea shushed her daughter, biting back a fit of giggles. “Yes baby, this is what mommy was telling you about,” she whispered.
Catey and Kris both giggled when the red masked turtle murmured something in his sleep and their blond friend blushed, bright crimson staining her cheeks.
“Kitty, could you?” Andrea implored.
“On it,” the tiny southerner said, then beat a hasty retreat back to the nursery.
“So what’s going on Drea?” Kris asked. “Did Raph spend the entire night?”
Stuck, Andrea sighed and tried to nod. “Yeah. There was a…problem at home. He called about two and I told him to come over.”
Kris’s eyes clouded over with concern. “A problem at home? Is everything okay?”
“It will be once you have a talk with your boyfriend,” Raph mumbled sleepily. Slowly, he opened his eyes and a somewhat guilty smile spread across his face. “Mornin’.”
“Morning,” Kris replied with a bright smile.
“What time is it?”
“10:20,” the raven-haired woman answered, then added with only the slightest hint of a blush, “and Leo’s not my boyfriend.”
Raph pushed himself up into a sitting position, his eyes lingering on Andrea as she scooted over to the side of the bed and pulled her long hair back over her shoulders. “Yeah, well…I’m willing to bet you’ll be the only one able to talk some sense into him.”
Just thinking about what had happened last night in the lair had bitter resentment boiling up within him again. Splinter scolding them for so easily trusting four female humans, Leo willingly jeopardizing any chance of them seeing their new friends just to stay on Splinters good side and remain the ever-obedient good son, Mikey’s hurt expression…all the damn yelling.
“What happened?” Kris asked.
Raph opened his mouth to reply but Andrea cut him off. “Why don’t we all wake up and have some breakfast? Raph can fill us in on the way back to his place.” She looked over her shoulder, her eyes meeting his and smiled. “What do you say sweetie? Up for a massive gourmet breakfast?”
The food was ordered and brought up, more food than Raphael had ever seen in one place before. Waffled, English muffins, bagels, omelets, a huge variety of breakfast meats, fresh fruit, pancakes and two large pitchers of milk and orange juice.
All of this came while Andrea was showering. She came out of her room barefooted, dressed in low rise blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt with a white and blue snowboarding emblem across the chest.
“Ooh! Hello food!” she murmured, blotting her damp hair with a peach, terry cloth towel. Hanging it over the back of a chair, she took a seat next to Raph and grabbed a strip of bacon.
“So…can we hear now?” Catey asked anxiously.
“On the way there. There’s something I think Raph needs to know before anything else happens.” Andrea flicked a piece of bacon at the younger blond, grinning impishly. “And he needs to eat. We starve the poor guy and it’s just going to make it all the more easy to set him off.” Glancing over at Raph, she nudged him with her toe.
“What do I need to know?” Raph asked skeptically.
Andrea took a deep breath and released it slowly. “I’ll show you.”
She left the room, returning moments later with Sammy in her arms. The child took one look at Raph and a wide, amazed smile split her tiny face.
“Mama…turta,” Sammy whispered to her mom, no less excited than she was before but obviously attempting to contain it as much as a toddler could.
“Yes honey, I know. His names Raphael. Raph, this is Samantha. She’s…she’s my daughter.”
The word ‘daughter’ had a decidedly dampening effect. Raph swallowed hard as what took place between him and Andrea last night played over and over in his head. She had a kid? Did that mean she was with someone? Dating? Married?
Sensing his train of thought, Andrea was quick to rectify it. “The situation got bad and the safest thing was to get me and Sammy out of it. I worked at it very hard and for a very long time, but there was no saving what was happening. It’s just me and her now. Are you…are you okay with this?”
He nodded slowly.
“Hm, you’re nodding. But I don’t know if I can believe the nod.” She sighed deeply. “I guess I’ll just have to put you to the test. Here babes, go play with Raph.”
Before he could ask what “the test” was, Andrea plopped Samantha down on his lap. Her blue eye were watching him avidly, her mouth turned up in a cherubic smile that no man in his right mind could resist. He was so enthralled by her that he hardly registered Andrea telling him to watch her while she got her things ready to go. He muttered a distracted “uh huh.” Samantha copied him while reaching out to pat his cheeks with her tiny hands. The combination did him in. He melted completely and for the first time in his life, was completely at the mercy of a female.
The exchange did not go unnoticed by the women, whom were also melting as they watched Raph’s rough exterior give way to an entranced smile.
“Okay, Raph with a baby is officially the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” Kris declared softly. Catey and Andrea nodded their agreement.
“Hey there cute stuff,” Raph said tenderly, chuckling when she leaned forward and enthusiastically threw her arms around his neck, snuggling in as if she’d known him months rather than just a few minutes. “Aw, you give good hugs, just like your mama.”
“Oh, I think I’m gonna cry!” Catey whispered.
Andrea was already tearing up watching the turtle she loved so dearly with the daughter she loved so dearly. She had expected him to be nervous, to balk at the fact that she had a child. To see him with her now, to see how natural he acted with her and see his nurturing personality come to the surface so quickly, left her breathless. It was more than she could have ever hoped for.
“So Raph, I’ll ask you again,” she murmured, sniffling back tears and watching the turtle and baby bond with one another, “are you okay with this?”
He looked over Samantha’s shoulder, rubbing her little back with the tips of his fingers. “Better than okay,” he admitted without thinking. Grinning, he moved his fingers to the little girl’s side and tickled her. His laughter mixed with Samantha’s infectious giggle was the most beautiful thing Andrea had heard and before she could stop them, tears sprang to her eyes and coursed down her cheeks.
“Aw, Drea.” Catey was quickly at her side, hugging her and giggling. “It’s okay sweetie.”
“What? What did I do?” Raph asked, a note of panic in his voice. Both him and Samantha turned their attention to her, both looking equally worried.
Andrea quickly brushed away the tears, laughing. “Nothing honey. Nothing at all. I just didn’t expect you to be so accepting. A single woman with a baby is usually the kind of thing that sends a man running for the hills.”
Raph’s mouth quirked up in an irresistibly charming grin. “Yeah, well…I’m not most guys. And if any guy took off runnin’ from this little charmer, he’s obviously blind. Ain’t that right kiddo?”
“Dat’s wight!” Sammy yelped, laughing and throwing her arms around him again.
“Man, she’s just a little cuddler, isn’t she?”
Andrea nodded, coming around the table and brushing Samantha’s thick hair with her fingers. “Oh yes. Mama taught you well, didn’t she baby?”
Although Samantha was excited by the appearance of her new friend, nothing topped her mama. She held her arms up, smiling and wriggling in Raph’s arms until he handed her over to Andrea who laughed as Samantha cuddled up in her arms, then turned and looked back at Raph, a loud squeal escaping her as she reiterated, yet again, that Raph was a “turta.”
“Oooh, I know. He’s such a honey, isn’t he?” She leaned over, gave Raph a quick kiss, looked at him and said with quite conviction, “thank you.”
He reached up, wrapping an arm around the nape of her neck and pulling her back down for another kiss. “Babe, if the only surprise you’ve got to throw at me is an adorable little handful like her, I’m more than okay with it.”
Her heart clenched tightly and she forced a smile. There was more than just the secret of a child she had but right now that wasn’t important. “Why don’t you eat something sweetie. Don’t want to be all agitated when we get to your place, do you?”
Taking a bite of some of the best food he’d ever tasted, Raph shook his head. Andrea was right. He’d do a lot better at keeping his cool when facing his family or even speaking of what happened on a full stomach.
As they ate, Raph watched his three hostesses and the newest addition and couldn’t help thinking that women, especially these three, were fascinating creatures. They seemed to generate this warmth that made him feel at ease instead of feeling as if he were intruding. They each had their own vibrant light.
Man, you’re getting’ a little sentimental.
He smiled at the thought, not really caring if he was. His eyes scanned the group, noticing little things that set them apart, yet made their friendship stronger.
Catey was the youngest of the three, filled with the same boundless enthusiasm that fueled Mikey. She practically bounced in her seat as spoke in an accent he could hardly decipher. Next to Samantha, she was the baby of the group and it was very obvious that she was very well looked after by the three older women. Though she had a wild streak he could just make out under the surface of her polite, excited exterior.
Kris…that girl was the proverbial lioness of the group. She was confident, strong willed and had proved once already that she cared deeply for the safety of her friends. Raph knew that if she had been with Catey and Andrea had been attacked, Andrea wouldn’t still be sporting the now fading bruises around her neck. Kris would have destroyed the guy.
And Andrea…he let his eyes fix on the oldest of the three, noticing she hardly ever sat normally in a chair. As she fed her daughter bits of scrambled eggs and pancake, her leg was pulled up, her foot tucked under the other or both were pulled up so that she was sitting with them crossed, but hardly ever were both feet on the floor at the same time.
This one swore like a truck driver, making it sound more like a second language, though he could tell she was making a huge effort not to, especially now that Samantha was around.
Andrea was the oldest, maybe even older than him. He’d never asked her age. She was a laid back, confident woman who used sarcasm as much as he did and that impressed him. She was also extremely loving as far as he could tell. She had been openly affectionate with him and her friends. And watching her with her daughter, it was obvious that motherhood was something she had been made for. But something told him that she could be mean when pushed into it.
He was mentally aware, at all times, of the strong bond between these three. It was just as strong as the one he shared with his brothers.
“Well, I’m full,” Andrea said, bringing him back from his thoughts.
“Same here.” Kris leaned back in her chair, stifling a yawn with her hand. “What do you say Raph? Ready to go?”
He grinned wryly at the raven-haired woman. “Not really.”
“Oh, you’re going to have to face them sooner or later,” Andrea said as she stood and flicked the hood of his sweater over his head. “Besides, it’s not fair to keep Catey and Kris away from your brothers.”
“And Christy,” Kris threw in.
“Oh! Damn, I forgot about her. Don’t tell her that. Woman would flat out pound on me. We’d better bring her with.”
They rousted Christy who was already awake and ready for the day, proving herself quite the morning person. She made a quick call to free up her day and was more than happy to join them. Taking a silver Escalade Andrea, Catey and Kris had mysteriously acquired, they left the hotel and hit the busy streets of New York.
