The bookstore re-opening was a huge success. Everyone loved the cool turtle “costumes” and wanted to know where they’d been purchased.
“Special orders from Japan,” Michelangelo kept telling them. “Excellent craftsmanship, don’t you think? Mine’s the best... you can see the stitching on some of the others.” If someone mentioned any of their scars, he’d say, “The costumes were damaged in transit; we’ve changed couriers over it. I guess if you want something done right, you’ve gotta do it yourself, huh?”
At first the turtles had been a little nervous of the customers. They were worried that someone would discover that they weren’t real, but as the days wore on, the guys began to relax; everyone was falling for it. In fact, they only had one customer who wouldn’t quit bugging them about the costumes. The customer was a middle-aged theatre set designer, with big, black-framed glasses, who boldly grabbed Leo’s arm and was trying to find a seam. Lisa had come hurrying over and made a big fuss over pretending to hide a zipper under the edge of Leo’s shell. She’d put her hands on her hips and given him a lecture about paying attention to details, and that he’d ruin the customers’ experience if they saw a zipper. Leo had apologised to her for being sloppy. The man had seemed satisfied and walked away.
Leonardo and Lisa had to hurry to the back stock room to let out the torrent of laughter that was bubbling out of their throats. Lisa had leaned on Leo’s arm for support while she wiped the tears from her eyes. She was less shy about touching him now and he liked it.
Donatello had gone through a photo album in Charlie’s apartment and had found a picture of her grandfather as a young man. He was wearing a nice suit and had a huge smile on his face. Don had scanned it into his computer, zoomed in on the man’s head and shoulders, blown the picture up to the size of a small poster, and framed it before hanging it on the wall next to the main doors. Underneath, he’d attached a small plaque that read, “WILLIAM CAMPBELL: Founder of Better Books.” Charlotte had cried when she saw it.
The night before they opened, Charlie and Lisa had presented the guys with gift-wrapped boxes. The turtles were touched; Charlie had already given them so much...
Raphael got his open first. It was a bright red shirt with the new store logo stitched on the back and his name on both short sleeves. He wasn’t sure what to make of it - he’d never worn a shirt before.
“Try it on,” Charlie encouraged him. He looked skeptical but pulled it on. It wouldn’t fasten at the front, but it looked okay hanging open.
“It ain’t bad, I guess,” he said, still not sure about it.
Donatello had a purple shirt with the store logo and his name. Leonardo’s was blue. He and Don had to take their weapons off to get them on.
They all looked at Mike. He’d opened his box and looked at the shirt but hadn’t pulled it out. He smiled smugly at his brothers. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,” he said. The chicks dig me more than you three old ladies. I don’t have a nerdy shirt like you.”
He pulled out his bright orange Hawaiian-print shirt and put it on. “This is fucking awesome,” he grinned.
