“Neo Pop Tate's”
“Hey mom.” Max said.
“Yes honey.”
“Can you tell them to stop kissing, now?” Max whined. “Eww he’s grabbing her butt!”
I was so lost in the moment, the shock of Reggie actually being here, and now him kissing me, caressing and tasting every cavity of my mouth with his tongue. I couldn’t even fathom what his mouth tasted like all I know was that this was something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Well, one of them anyway. I moaned as his fingers gently squeezed my butt, I slowly closed my eyes and his fingers never left my hair. I kept my hands pressed against his chest clutching at the nape of his collar, pulling him closer to me. I completely blocked out everything and everyone else. Until I heard, Max shout at us.
“Hey! Cut that out!” He shouted at us.
“Max!” Midge whispered harshly.
“But mom, everyone’s looking at em’!” Max frowned.
Hearing that I quickly broke away from his lips and pushed Reggie away from me.
“Oh my god.” I muttered.
“Yeah I agree that was hot.” Reggie grinned openly.
I looked around the Malt Shop to notice that everyone was looking at us. I felt my face flare up.
“I gotta go!” I spluttered as I quickly zipped off the women’s restroom.
Completely mortified I locked myself in the bathroom stall, covered the toilet with mountains of toilet paper and then sat on it.
After about a minute I heard someone enter the bathroom.
“Betty.” I heard Ethel say. I didn’t answer
“Oh come on I know your in here. I don’t know why your hiding.”
“Not now, Ethel.” I sighed.
“Yes now. You get out here, and stop acting like a scared rabbit.” she snapped as she stood in front of the bathroom stall that I had locked myself in.
I didn’t answer.
“You want me to go get Reggie? You know he won’t mind coming in the women’s restroom to come get you.” Ethel threatened.
“Ok, ok.” I sighed giving in as I opened the stall and walked past her to the sink. “I don’t need anymore embarrassment thanks.”
“Embarrassment? Hah!” she laughed as she walked over to the sink. “I’m starting to wonder if you two had a thing going on. *Gasp* Oh my god, Reggie was your undercover lover!”
“Oh please!” I retorted smacking Ethel on her arm.
“You don’t have to lie. I’ll understand. Ok…no I don’t. But I’ll try.” She smiled innocently.
“No. Reggie and I didn’t have anything going on. I mean yes we were couple but we were doing it to break up Veronica and Archie. That’s all!” I emphasized with my hands.
“Yeah, I know that. But how do you explain what just happened out there, just now?” Ethel smirked. “And you turning all pink and girlish and then running off to the ladies room. Explain that one sunshine.”
“Well…I uh can’t. Ethel, I’m really not up for this right now.” I sighed running my hands through my hair with frustration.
“Oh my god! You…and he…and then you both…shit! This is so great!” Ethel laughed.
“How is this great Ethel?!” I frowned with frustration, at my best friends cheery attitude.
“You are in love with Reggie Mantle.” Ethel grinned.
“No. That’s ludicrous and you know it.” I said rolling my eyes.
“Please, Betty we’ve known each other since childhood. For the past near decade you haven’t been in one serious relationship. Every guy you’ve been with was just for sex or spur of the moment fun and excitement. You never got close to any guy other then Archie, Jughead and true enough the rat.” Ethel evaluated.
“True. But I have good reason.” I puffed. I was tired of being hurt and used by guys. And if memory serves me right, I think I have bad taste in men.
“Damn it, now I wished I had went to prom. All my info is hear say.” Ethel grumbled.
“Too bad.” I shrugged. I wish I never went to prom.
“Oh well, enough hiding we’ll have it all out later.” Ethel shrugged as she grabbed my arm.
“Nu uh! I’ll wait in here until he’s gone.” I protested, I know I sounded pretty childish but I don’t care.
“Now that’s just stupid, you know he’s not going anywhere. Might as well order desert or something.” Ethel said pulling me towards the door.
“No, I’m not hungry!” I struggled.
“Betty! You can’t keep running! Damn it, what ever it is you don’t want to face, you don’t have to face it alone. I’ll be here.” she gritted through her teeth as she pulled at me. “And stop acting like a little kid, you’re a grown woman for god sakes!”
“God I hate this!” I growled, but she was right. All the years I’ve been gone, I had ample time to come back. But I didn’t I kept running away, and hiding. But now it’s time to face the music. I know that I’m not same girl as I was before I left here, but that doesn’t help how angry I still am.
“Ok, your right. I can do this.”
“Finally. Stop wigging out on me!” Ethel scolded playfully as she let go of my arm. “I so want details of your love affair with the rat mantle, later.”
“We didn’t have a love affair. You really need to stop reading those Harlequin novels.” snorted as I exited the bathroom.
“And then what? Start reading yours? *snort* I only use them for coasters on my coffee table.” she joked.
“Yeah after your done reading it and finished donging your brains out. How is Mr. Softee by the way?” I remarked. She only turned to glare at me for a second. Ethel hasn’t dated in over a year now, so like any logical yet horny, hot-blooded female she has her whole set of adult toys. I always pick on her about them. For some reason she feels ashamed of herself for having them, so she tosses them out like every few months. But being the cynical human being I now am, I buy her a nice big gift basket full of adult toys for her birthday and Christmas.
When I came back to the table, people were still giving me sideway looks (mostly guys, winking, and smirking at me), but Reggie low and behold did not leave. No big surprise there.
“Was wondering how long it was going to take for you to change your maxi.” he smirked. “You bloating? Need some chocolate?”
“I’m fine!” I said between my teeth. I wanted to wring his neck, and he so eloquently took a seat across from my spot, so I’d have to look right at him when I sat down.
“Mom, what’s bloating? And what’s a maxi?” Max asked his mother.
“Reggie!” Midge snarled. “Max bloating is when someone is inflated with something, like with hot air balloons, remember when we went on a hot air balloon ride last summer?”
“Wow, Betty was full of hot air? Cool!” Max said gleefully and looked at me with awe. “She doesn’t look like it though.”
“I’ll have to explain it better later, max.” Midge sighed shaking her head with defeat.
While Reggie couldn’t stop laughing.
“So Reggie, how have you been?” Ethel asked trying to change the subject.
“Everything’s fine. After high school, went to college, got my degrees and now I’m running ‘The MC’. Hey midge you gonna eat all that?” he asked reaching for midge’s left over fries.
“The MC?” I asked. I never heard of it.
“Mantle Corps. Reggie inherited his fathers business, he’s remodeled it, and it’s a great success. Some think it’s as big as Lodge Enterprises.” Midge explained.
“Yeah, since I bought out LGM.” he added. I looked at him confusedly. “Lodge General Motors.”
“No shit!” I gasped, that was Mr. Lodge’s pride and joy. I wonder what happened. “Wow Reg, you seem to doing well, I bet your dad must proud of you.”
“Uh…yeah I guess.” He muttered looking down at his fries.
“What’s wrong? He didn’t kick you out again did he?” I asked, Richard Mantle was always doing things like that. He and Reggie would have some argument, and Reggie would come to my house in the middle of the night looking for a place to crash. It’s either that or sleep in his car, or a dingy motel. Sure by morning his dad is calling all over Riverdale looking for his wayward son, (whom he kicked out) it was like a common occurrence. I got so used to him sleeping over I’d have a sleeping bag in my closet, and my window would be open, so he’d just climb up to my window from the large tree outside it. Of course my parent’s never found out about it, but I think my dad was suspicious.
“I mean as big as your house is.”
“Betty, Richard died 3 years ago.” Midge said softly.
“*gasp* Oh my god. I’m so sorry Reggie.” I felt bad for him. Mr. Mantle was fun guy, shit Reggie was a reflection of his dear ole man. Boastful, full of pride, and laughter, and one heck of a flirt. But it was in all fun and games, he loved his wife. “Did he die of some sort of illness? Midge just told me that Pop Tate has diabetes.”
“He was murdered!” Reggie said in a low voice. I know he was keeping Max from hearing him, but I heard the conviction in his voice. I’ll have to have a talk with him about that on a later note.
“They said it was suicide. It was bullet to head at close range.” Midge replied softly, as she rubbed Max’s shoulders.
“My father would never kill himself. He loved his life. He never showed any signs of depression. I would know.” Reggie said evenly.
“Well…um so how is your mother? How is Glades doing? She still throwing those spring formals?” I asked trying to change the subject. Glades Mantle had always been head of the entertainment committee at the Country Club, and much to Mrs. Lodge’s dismay Glades was always elected to run the Debutante Ball every year. Being of a mediocre family I was never a debutante, not that I minded anyway, but it’s annoying listening to Veronica bash Glades work whenever she came back from the country club with her parents. All in all, no matter how much the lady lodge’s complained, Glades’s fundraisers, and charity banquets and Debutante Balls always went without a hitch, and were spectacular! I would know, Glades gave me the job as coordinator, I didn’t have to have loads of money to be apart of it. And it looked good on my college resume!
“After my father’s death it drove her into depression. She’s had dementia for the past 2 years, I couldn’t keep her at home for some reason she keeps leaving, so I bought a house for her near the beach, there’s a caregiver with her round’ the clock.” He explained shoving the fries into his mouth.
“Wow Reg.” Ethel sighed giving me sorrowful eyes. I mouth ‘what’.
“Well…uh maybe we should go visit her one day.” I suggested as I reached over and put my hand above his own.
“I don’t want you pity!” He muttered looking at me.
“I’m not pitying you.” I snarled. “My mother died from cancer.”
“So I heard. I didn’t see you at the funeral.” Reggie added.
“I was busy. Cell phone doesn’t work when your touring the Australian Outback.” I gritted.
“Ok you two!” Midge snapped. Reggie just smirked and winked at me.
“I wonder when everyone is going to come for the reunion.” Ethel said.
“Well they got like four days, the reunion isn’t until Friday night. Betty you’re lucky you came in so early.” Midge grinned.
“Lucky me.” I retorted sarcastically.
Looking down at my hand I noticed I was still holding on to Reggie’s. And he was caressing mine with his thumb, I quickly pulled it back, ignoring the fluttering feeling I had in my lower appendage. I needed something to distract me or he’ll start on me again, I grabbed my purse and pulled out my cell phone. I guess I should check the messages off my house phone.
“Mom can I have a cell phone?” Max asked his mother.
“Not until your in High School.” Midge replied. I chuckled to myself as I keyed in the password, Max is so cute.
‘You have 15 new messages.’ My answering machine replied.
“Ethel, did you check my phone before we left the apartment?” I asked.
“Yeah, you had like over 20 messages. What’s up with that?” she asked completely astonished at the number of messages left on my phone.
“I’m popular what can I say?” I smirked.
“You’re an author not an actress.” Ethel said rolling her eyes. “And fifteen of those messages was from some guy-”
“Ok I got it thanks!” I said quickly cutting her off, sending her glaring look.
“Are you sure? I mean, since your so popular and all he could be a stalker or something.” Ethel smirked obviously getting the message, but dancing around the ‘shut up’ part. I never told her about Joseph, not that I was hiding anything from her, I just didn’t think it was all that important to talk about.
I just rolled my eyes, and listened to my messages.
‘Message 1: “Betsy why aren’t you answering your phone? I’ve been dialing this number so often they’re starting to rub off, heh. Um… so…uh, damn it! Betsy just answer the phone! I-”
I punched the number to delete the message.
‘Message deleted, Message 2: Ok, ok, I’m calm, I’m collected Look I’m sorry, whatever it is that went wrong we can work it out! Just pick up the phone Betsy-
BEEP
‘Message deleted, Message 3: The fuck is wrong with you! Damn it! I was-
BEEP
‘Message deleted, Message 4: Ok, I’m sorry I was out of line there. I just need to talk to you. God I miss you so-

‘Message deleted, Message 5: (chuckle) I know your just toying around with me. I get it, this is just another one of your tests right? Heh should I wait for you in my thongs? Don’t roll your eyes you know you like them, mmm, aww look I’m think I’m hard already, maybe some phone-
BEEP
I just closed the flip phone and tossed it on the table with disgust, and rested my forehead on the table.
“Who was it?” Ethel asked.
“Not now E.” I moaned, with frustration. Then I lifted my head, to look for the kid who was taking our orders. “Hey E, where’s the kid?”
“Dunno, why?” she asked suspiciously.
“I need a stiff drink.” I muttered, avoiding Reggie’s look. He was staring at me the whole time I was listening to my messages, but I kept my eyes averted. It was odd listening to Joseph’s bullshit, and seeing Reggie give me lustful looks. This man is so annoying!
“Betty! It’s only 2 in the afternoon!” Ethel scolded.
“Yeah, and I’m going through withdrawal.” I smirked sarcastically at her.
“Betty can we reframe from speaking of alcoholic substances in front of my son, please?!” Midge gritted between her teeth, as she looked at Max who was playing his hand held game without a care in the world.
Ignoring both of the banshee’s I called out to Glenn, he quickly came to our table with an eager look in his eyes, that was quickly starting to freak me out a little bit.
“Glenn sweetie, do you have anything harder than a margarita on your menu?” I asked with a sweet smile on my face.
“Uh…we have strawberry martini’s.” he blushed.
“Perfect! I’ll have 2.” I smiled. Glenn gaped at me.
“Betty!” Midge whispered harshly.
“Hey mom, can I have a martimmy too? I like strawberries.” Max asked not moving his eyes from the game, heh the little mime was listening all along.
“I’m starting to think this was a bad idea dragging you here.” Ethel muttered.
“I’ll have one also.” I heard Reggie reply. I looked up at him to see his eyes glistening with laughter.
“Ok. I’ll get your orders, would you all like something else?” Glenn asked.
“I want a martimmy too!” Max argued with his mother.
“No.” Midge said sternly.
“But uncle Reggie’s getting one, too! And betty’s an alcoholic.” Max argued. “And I like strawberries.”
“Your uncle Reggie is a grown man, and Betty is …well…never mind!” Midge growled. “Glenn my son will have a strawberry shortcake, please.”
“Right. I’ll be right back then.” Glenn coughed.
“I’m a what now?” I grinned at Midge, as I winked at Max.
“A bad influence!” Midge gritted, as she shook her fist at me.
“That’s the same thing she says about me.” Reggie snorted.
“The both of you then!” Midge snapped.
After our eventful luncheon, we spent the rest of the day in the park. Which made Max extremely happy, for the first time since I met him, he wasn’t playing that damned video game. He ran off to play football with some kids. Reggie left for work, saying something about seeing me later, or calling me later. Didn’t really matter because I wasn’t going to do either of the two.
Midge and Ethel kept nagging me about him the whole time we were at the park.
“You know, Reggie was engaged at one time.” Midge bragged about, obviously trying to get a reaction out of me.
“Really? Who was it? You?” I smirked, watching her roll her eyes.
“No! To some model he met over in Mexico.” She said.
“Oh, how promiscuous!” Ethel chuckled. “No worries there Midge, I’ve been there twice.”
“You’ve been engaged twice?!” Midge gaped.
“Married and divorced.” I added.
“Wow, Ethel.” Midge sighed, giving her friend a sad look, before turning to me. “So what about you? ‘Betsy’ I don’t see any rings on your finger. Obviously.”
“I pawned them all. They held no sentimental value to me. Now the $30,000 dollars I made off of them really helped the separation.” I lied. I laughed when I saw the look off of Midge’s face.
“She’s lying Midge, Betty never got married, much less engaged to anyone.” Ethel explained. “She has commitment issues.”
“I do not!” I argued. “I’m just not interested in longterm relationships.”
“Hence, you have commitment issues.” Ethel said grimly. “She only stays with a guy long enough until she’s either bored of him,”
“Not true!” I intercepted cutting her off.
“Or he’s fallen for her and wants to get serious. It’s usually the later.” Ethel continued on as if I didn’t interupt.
“Geez Betty. I’m not one to judge, I’m not any better myself. I don’t date, my life consist of work and Max. But is all of this because of what happened with you and Archie?” Midge asked.
“I really don’t want to talk about that.” I gritted.
“Don’t have to, your life until now says it all, girlfriend!” Ethel grinned.
“Your still in love with that carrot-top?” Midge gasped. “You’ve got to be joking.”
“No, I’m not! *snort* I was doubting my feelings for him long before prom.” I admitted, staring out into the lush green park.
“Took you long enough.” Ethel exasperated.
“Uh huh, and I’m wondering who was the cause of that.” Midge smirked evily. “Your devotion to the red head ran so deep. Even when he was seeing both you and Veronica, you took his bull-shit in stride and kept on trucking.”
“Thanks midge I so want to remember how stupid I was.” I criticized.
“Loyal yes, and sometimes really stupid. But let’s kiss and tell. I remember when you and Reg were named Prom King and Queen.” Midge added.
“I heard about that!” Ethel grinned. “ I remember the two of you were together for a good while near the end of the school year. Everyone was talking.”
“Yeah the gigolo and the girl next door.” Midge joked. “And believe it or not you guys were so cute together!”
“Ugh. Guys it was a fluke ok?” I sighed already feeling worn out and the day wasn’t anywhere near over yet. “We were only together to get Dudley do right and the shrew jealous.”
“Which worked.” Midge winked. “Seeing you two together all the time made Archie extremely jealous, and you never called him or even hung around him anymore, which was a huge turn around. And Veronica didn’t get to enjoy her success of keeping him all to herself because all his attention was on you.”
“I heard that you and the rat were dry humping on the dance floor and Arch blew his top, and the two ended up fighting destroying the whole dance!” Ethel grinned.
“We weren’t dry humping! Ethel you know that!” I shouted.
“No I don’t!” Ethel said looking innocent. “Wasn’t there remember?”
“Part I loved was when Betty and Veronica rumbled and you got a chunk of the bitch’s hair!” Midge sneered. “She left with a busted nose and swollen lip. Not to mention her raccoon eyes.”
I just laughed in response.
“Anyhoo from today’s performance I’d say there was more going on between you and the rat then your letting on.” Ethel said inquisitively.
“Whatever.” I replied. No matter what I say I seem to be incriminating myself apparently.
“Yeah I think so too.” Midge agreed. “I think they’ll be good for each other don’t you think, Ethel?”
“Maybe.” Ethel smirked, raising one of her elegantly trimmed eyebrows.
“Ok, none of that match making stuff! I don’t need the two of you trying to put us together or whatever, I’m not staying here long. After the reunion I’m heading home.” I explained firmly.
I got no response. That alone worried me. Ethel got me here, now Midge is having crazy match making ideas. This is so not what I need right now. What I do need is to go to the liquor store and restock my mini bar, a.k.a. my bedroom closet.
“No you can’t buy any alcohol to bring home with you.” Ethel said reading my mind.
“Betty are you nuts?! What if one of your nieces finds them? You’ll be arrested in a new york minute, then you’ll never get to go back home!” Midge scolded.
“Damn forgot about that.” I groaned.
