Jane sensed Superman’s presence in the room then and turned around to face him with a slight smile in her face, her eyes shimmering with tears, an expression of happiness mixed with sorrow.
“Hiya, S,” she greeted him with a small sniffle. “Chris and I were just reminiscing about some old times we had with our good friend Jeff.”
Jeff was the one who was killed by Rellek, Superman remembered.
“Ah,” he replied, nodding his head. He felt a lot of pity for humans, knowing how fragile they were. But thinking about the being that was responsible for killing their friend Jeff made him feel just as fragile right now…and he didn’t care much for that feeling. It was certainly not something that he was used to.
Superman walked closer to the window where Jane and Chris were standing and he peered out at the half-covered moon that was hanging close to the horizon. The horn of a freight train blared mournfully from somewhere in the distance. He’s out there somewhere…right now, Superman thought to himself, and he felt another chill. He shook his head, trying to regain his composure as he looked at Jane. He noticed that she looked exceptionally beautiful in the moonlight, almost surreal. Chris was a lucky young man indeed, he thought to himself. Jane was exceptional in every way he could think of.
Jane noticed Superman staring at her in an odd way. As she looked at him she couldn’t help but notice how well built he was. It was hard not to considering the tight outfit he wore all the time. She often found herself trying very hard not to get caught gaping at his bulge.
“So…what did he say?” Jane asked him, snapping him out of his daze.
“Nothing much,” he replied. “Just that the creature’s name is Rellek.”
Superman shifted his gaze and looked at the equipment they had stored in the room. A small thirteen-inch color TV set with a built-in VCR and a handheld camcorder. “Chris, take the camera, please, and follow me,” he said.
Chris did as he was asked and he also opened the side of the camera to make sure that the blank tape he had inserted in it earlier was still there, which there was, and then he closed it back up again. “It’s ready to go,” he informed Superman.
“Good, let’s go,” he replied, leading Chris back down into the basement where Trevor was being kept. Jane followed them.
Superman opened the door and entered the room, followed by Chris and Jane. Trevor was still sitting slumped in the chair that was being used to confine him. Trevor trained his eyes on them without bothering to move.
“Go ahead,” Superman said, looking at Chris.
Chris turned on the camera and pushed the record button as he pointed the lens at Trevor who then shifted up in his seat, looking at the camera with a confused expression. Trevor then shifted his gaze to Superman who was standing right in front of him again and also looking right at him. Jane had positioned herself next to Chris. Superman moved closer to Trevor and then he turned to fact the camera as he motioned for Chris to train it on him. Chris backed up a couple of feet so he could get both of them in the picture. Then Superman began to speak.
“Rellek…my attempts to get any useful information out of your friend here have been quite unsuccessful,” he said, gesturing towards Trevor. “He has proven to be either unwilling or unable to tell me anything about you other than your name. As you know, I have become aware of your existence and your crimes. Our confrontation the other night was…unpleasant…to say the least.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Trevor said to Superman, looking dumbfounded at what he perceived to be foolish audacity. “This is NOT going to help you, believe me.”
“Silence!” commanded Superman as moved closer to Trevor and made a fist at him. “You will not speak again unless you have something useful to tell me. Is that understood?”
“Fuck you,” Trevor said.
Superman grabbed the front of Trevor’s shirt near the smaller man’s chest with both of fists and yanked him up out of the chair, as far as the restraints, and Trevor’s stretched limbs, would allow for without breaking anything, causing Trevor to let out a quiet yelping sound.
“You’re crazy,” Trevor muttered into Superman’s face, which was filled with what appeared to be rage.
Chris was surprised at this but he just stood where he was and kept taping. Jane was shocked and with a gasp she ran over to Superman and placed her hand on his shoulder.
“Superman, please,” she begged, trying to calm him down.
Superman looked back at Jane. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt him,” he whispered to her.
Then he looked back at Trevor and let him go suddenly, causing him to fall back down into the chair with a slight thump. Trevor struggled momentarily to reposition himself more comfortably in the chair and then fell silent. Jane looked at him with a worried expression. This was starting to get a little out of hand, she thought. She always trusted Superman’s judgment but she sure hoped that he knew what he was doing now. She had never seen him quite like this before. Superman had not yet told Jane or anyone else about his skirmish with Rellek.
Superman turned towards the camera and moved quickly towards it, causing Chris to take a step back but then he held his ground.
Superman pointed his finger into the camera. “I don’t expect you to turn yourself in to the authorities. I only ask that you cease your aggressions against the citizens of this planet. You will be forced to do so one way or another, I assure you. ” Superman glanced back at Trevor and then he looked into the camera again. “Trevor is in my custody now. If you care anything at all for his safety then you will comply with my request. We can meet to discuss the terms of his freedom.” Superman paused for a moment before saying, “That’s all I have to say right now.” Then he motioned for Chris to stop recording.
Chris lowered the camera as she shut it off.
Jane walked over to Superman and put he hand on his arm. “Superman…are you alright?” she asked with a deep concern.
“Yes…I’m fine,” he replied, gently placing his hand on her shoulder. Let’s go back upstairs now,” he said, leading her towards the door.
So they left the room and Chris followed them, making sure to close the door behind him, and then he followed them up the stairs. They were headed back to the room with the VCR when Superman stopped them in the hallway.
“Trust me…” Superman told Jane, “I just needed to make sure this Rellek knows I mean business.”
“I understand but…” Jane felt there was more to it than that…there was something her friend was not telling them. “…is there something you’re not telling us”?
Chris had moved up to stand next to Jane. He looked at her then back at Superman again.
Superman sighed. “Yes…there is.” Then he started moving towards the entrance of the room again and motioned for them to follow. “Come and sit down,” he said as he walked through the doorway and moved to the side so that Chris and Jane could make their way to the old table and chair set that was in the back of the room.
After the two had taken their seats Superman stood before them and recounted the events that had transpired the previous night. They needed to know how serious this was.
After he was finished Jane and Chris looked at each other and then back at Superman again with expressions of disbelief although they did not doubt his sincerity for a moment.
“That thing almost killed me,” Superman admitted to them. “I had underestimated its abilities, that’s for sure. I have a feeling that this situation is only going to get even more dangerous. I think it would be best for you two to just go home and wait this out. Trevor told me that Rellek will come for him and I believe it might be out looking for him right now…and although I’m not sure how true this is…Trevor said it would find him. He implied that it has some way to track him no matter where he is. So just in case, I would like to take you both to leave this place right now.”
“But Superman,” Jane objected, “what if something happens to you? Then what would we do?”
“Please…try not to worry about that,” Superman said in a comforting voice. “I’ll be ok…and if anything happens I’ll be sure to let you know, I promise. Now please, you must go now. Chris, give me that tape.”
Chris popped open the side of the camera and removed the tape. Then he stood up and handed the tape over to Superman.
“Thank you both, for everything,” Superman said as Jane rose from her seat. He took one of their hands into each of his. “You have been very helpful to me.”
Chris had started to walk towards the door as Jane gave Superman a tearful hug. Superman gently rubbed his hands along her back, trying to comfort her as best as he could under the circumstances. She realized just how grim things were now and she was afraid to think that she might never see her friend again.
“It’s going to be ok,” he promised.
“I hope so,” she replied through her sobs, which were beginning to subside.
Then Jane quietly left the room with her boyfriend Chris, headed for home.
