When Robin woke up the next day, the sky was dark. Looking over to the enchantress, he felt sorry for her. “All this time she had some good in her,” he shook his head. Getting up, he got dressed and walked to Jinx’s side of the bed. Grabbing a sheet, he covered his former foe. “Good bye,” he said solemnly. “I guess deep down inside she had some good in her.” Robin walked towards the door, glancing back just before leaving.
Back at Titan Tower, Robin headed upstairs to change. While he was putting some armaments in his belt, he noticed a small piece of crumpled paper. Reading it over, his mind returned to the night before. Everything that Jinx had told him about the HIVE plan and now he had a way to stop them from ever completing “the project” as Jinx had told him. “I have some time,” Robin thought, “without Jinx’s team completing their assignment, they haven’t finished.” Robin tossed his ruined uniform and put on a new one. Running from his room, he wanted to check up on his friends.
Upon entering, he saw Cyborg finishing up his repairs. “Where were you last night,” the metal titan asked the boy wonder. “Getting information about the HIVE from Jinx,” Robin responded as he looked at Starfire and back to Cyborg. “It took you all night? Have you slept? And how do you even know that Jinx was saying anything true? She’s in the HIVE. We can’t trust someone from there.” “Yes it took all night. You can’t exactly rush when someone is giving up information. And she’s not in the HIVE anymore,” Robin said. Cyborg looked at him, “How do you know that? Did she tell you that too?” Robin looked at his friend. “She’s not a HIVE member anymore cause she’s dead.” Cyborg was stunned. A dead HIVE member! “You didn’t kill her did you?” Now it was Robin’s turn to be shocked. “Of coarse not! She told me that her powers hurt her too, though you’d think that she would have known that before using them but let's move on. How are the others? Responding?”
But before Cyborg could respond, a light moaning was heard behind them. Robin turned around to see Starfire waking up. “Star,” Robin said rushing to her side, “you ok?” The Tamaranian girl smiled as she held her head. “You want some medicine to help with that headache?” She nodded and Robin went over to a counter and opened a drawer. Grabbing to tablet's and some water, he brought them back over to give to Starfire.
“Feeling better,” Robin asked as she swallowed. “I shall feel better yes. Thank you.” Robin turned his attention to Beast Boy. The green titan remained sleeping. “Has he woken up yet,” he asked. Cyborg and Starfire shook their heads. “I’m kinda worried that he’s going to be in here a long time.” “Has Raven done anything to heal him,” Robin asked. “She came in here last night and did the whole heal-the-wounded thing but like she said when she fixed your arm, its still going to take some time.” Seeing that Starfire and Cyborg were getting better quickly and Beast Boy was sleeping, Robin headed downstairs to get some breakfast.
Cyborg and Starfire soon joined him. Starfire noticed that Robin seemed to be depressed. “Are you alright,” she asked concerned for her friend. “Huh? Yeah, I was just thinking.” “What has caused this sad mood Robin,” the Tamaranian girl pressed, “you do not have to keep it a secret.” Robin looked into Star’s emerald green eyes, seeing understanding in her. Taking a deep breath, he told her what was weighing so heavily on his mind, some parts fuzzy. Starfire seemed to take it rather well but inside she was devastated. “So where is Jinx now,” she asked, trying to block out what Robin had done. “Dead. The last thing that she did was give me this,” Robin said pulling out the paper that Jinx had given him. “Do you think that this is real and not some trick,” Cyborg asked, “I mean it is possible that this was like one last mission.”
The question hung in the air, waiting to be answered. “Surely this could be some sort of trick but she may have carried out before becoming deceased,” Starfire said. While Robin, Star, and Cyborg sat at the table thinking, Raven came downstairs. “Hello friend Raven,” Starfire exclaimed, “perhaps you can aid us in this question?” “Helps to know the question first,” Raven responded. “We are wondering whether or not what Jinx wrote on this is going to help us or lead us into a trap,” Cyborg answered. “And you think that I can figure this out why,” the black sorceress asked. “Because you can contact her soul,” Starfire answered. “She can still lie even after death. There is really no difference between her life and her afterlife.” The titans still had no answer. “But will you try,” Robin asked, thinking that the information was true. “Fine,” Raven answered, “but I need silence so don’t come to me before I return. Distract me and I’ll have to start over.” The three titans nodded, concurring with Raven’s stipulations. Raven left them to see if she could get am answer from Jinx and Cyborg got up to take care of the dishes, which left Robin and Starfire alone.
Robin looked at Starfire, his heart aching and his mind filled with regret. “Why did I do it,” Robin thought, “What was I thinking?” The more that he thought about it, the more pity filled him. The emotion was getting to the point that he felt sick to his stomach. “Robin?” Starfire asked concerned, “are you going to feel sick?” Robin looked down, “I’m sorry Star,” he mumbled, “I never wanted to hurt you. I wasn’t thinking and I wish that I could take it back.” “But why did you go with converse with our enemy without the others? Surely it would have been better if another accompanied you.” Robin stood up but continued to hang his head. “All I can do is ask you to forgive me. I wish I knew why I did what I did but it’s too late.” Starfire watched as Robin walked away. She held out her hand to stop him but let it fall to her side.
Upstairs in his room, Robin suddenly collapsed in pain. A pain shot through his chest. Wrapping his arms around himself, he cried out in pain. Starfire and Cyborg thundered to Robin’s side, finding their leading on the ground. “Help me,” Robin yelled as he rolled back and forth. “We need to get him to the med lab,” Cyborg said as he picked up Robin. “Hurry,” Starfire screamed. They rushed Robin down the hall, both worried that there was something seriously wrong with their friend. “Is he going to be ok,” Starfire asked as she looked at the boy wonder struggle to get comfortable. Cyborg didn’t respond as he set Robin down on a bed. “Shall I give him the pills to heal him,” Starfire asked. “That’s not going to help. He’s going to need something stronger,” Cyborg said as he gave more powerful drugs to soothe the pain. Slowly, the effects took effect and Robin slowly slipped into a peaceful slumber.
Raven walked in soon after Robin fell asleep. “Any luck with the dead,” Cyborg asked. “Please tell us what you have learned,” Starfire said. Raven pulled down her hood and stared at her friends. “I couldn’t find her,” she replied drearily. The two other titans stared at each other, then a Raven. “What do you mean,” Starfire asked, “Did we interrupt your meditation?” The dark teen shook her head, “she wasn’t there. I found many others but she was not to be found.” “Which means what,” Cyborg asked. “Which means that she’s not dead,” Raven answered. The three titans had the answer. Jinx was trying to lure them into a trap and it had nearly worked.
“What’s wrong with Robin,” the dark sorceress asked seeing Robin. Starfire looked at Robin, her eyes brimming with tears. “We don’t know,” Cyborg answered, “it’s like he just suddenly came down with something.” Raven approached the boy wonder. Using her powers to try to heal Robin, she had a brief vision. A needle, a scream, and darkness passed before her eyes. “Raven,” Cyborg asked, “you coming down with something too?” The Goth looked at the metal titan, “No, but I think that I may have some idea as to why Robin is sick. It seems that something happened where Robin was injected with some sort of chemical. It could be the cause of it.” Cyborg pulled out a syringe and drew some blood for testing. “This should tell us what’s inside him,” he said as he placed it under a microscope.
In the small sample of blood, some sort of simple chemical agent was present. “Looks like some sort of knockout drug,” Cyborg said pulling his head away from the microscope. “I think that there is a real simple cure for it but I can think of it. Oh yeah, now I remember. Just some simple antibiotics and some rest.” The metal titan gave Robin an injection to cure him and nodded. “Should be good now,” he said. Raven walked out, seeing as how she wasn’t needed. “Star? You going to be ok?” Cyborg asked the Tamaranian girl. “I shall be well,” she responded as she looked at Robin sleeping. “You sure? ‘Cause you look upset.” Starfire nodded, “I just want to stay and watch Robin.” “You can’t do anything to help him,” Cyborg said, “we can only wait.” But the alien girl refused to leave the boy wonder’s side. “I’ll see you later then,” Cyborg said and he left Starfire alone with Robin and Beast Boy who was also recovering.
Starfire stood watching her friend rest. Seeing him lying helplessly caused her to think of all that he had done for her. It was Robin who made her feel welcome on Earth. He was the one that had always taken the time to explain what the others were talking about. And he was the one that had stopped her from being used by her sister in a twisted plan. Weighing those attributes against Robin’s actions the previous night, she had to decide what meant more. “Robin,” she whispered into the titan’s ear, “I forgive you like you asked. Please get well.” Tears began to stream down her face. “I know Cyborg said that he would get better but I wish that I could do something.”
A shifting sound behind her jogged her from her thought of Robin. Twisting around, her eyes fell upon Beast Boy would was struggling to sit up. “Beast Boy,” Starfire said coming to his side, “are you feeling better?” The green titan rubbed his back, “Dude, I need to eat something. Uh...Oh yeah I’m good Star.” As he got up to head downstairs, he saw Robin. “Dude, what happened to him?” “He is unwell,” Starfire answered, “but Cyborg gave him something to cure him.” The green titan didn’t know what else to say, “See ya later Star,” he said and made his exit.
Hours passed and Starfire didn’t move from Robin’s side. Though he had hurt him, she believed that there was something behind it. “Surely there is a reason,” she thought over and over again. Robin began to stir as he slowly opened his eyes. Still weak for the mysterious illness and medicine, he fell asleep before Starfire had a chance to talk to him. Still, she would not leave Robin, no matter what he had done.
“Hey, Star,” Beast Boy said walking in, “you want to...” “Shh,” Starfire hushed, “Robin is sleeping.” “Sorry,” the green titan whispered. In a low voice, barely able to be heard, the changeling finished his sentence. “You want to get something to eat? I’m sure that Robin will be fine. And you need to eat something since it dinner time and I don’t think that you’ve eaten all day.” “I will not leave Robin,” the Tamaranian responded. As much as Beast Boy tried to get Starfire to go even he could see the futility of his effort. “Then you want me to bring you something,” he offered. “Please,” Starfire said. The green titan left to get something for Starfire.
“Star?” a dry voice asked, “you’re here?” “Robin,” Starfire exclaimed as she wrapped him in a bear hug. “I’m glad that you’re feeling better.” Robin held Starfire close. He wanted so much to fix the damage that he had caused her. “Starfire, I...” But the orange titan placed a finger on his lips, silencing him. “It is going to be alright,” she said softly. “But I...” Robin stammered. “I forgive you. I believe that there was something else that caused you to do what you did. I don’t believe that you would have gone along with what Jinx desired if you could have. Plus you are unable to fully remember what happened.” Robin shifted slightly, still feeling terrible but relieved that he was forgiven. “But,” Starfire continued, “Why would you not remember last night?” Robin thought, the previous night running through his mind like a bunch of cut scenes. “I went to the park, got something to drink, followed Jinx, she got me with...she got me with a needle. “That’s it,” Robin exclaimed jumping off the bed. “What’s it,” Starfire asked perplexed, “I do not understand.”
“Last night Jinx got me with something that knocked me out. Could that have done it to me? But why would she?” Starfire looked at Robin, “Perhaps because she loved you,” she suggested. “Probably, but I shouldn’t have been so stupid,” Robin said in disgust. “Please stop this self hitting,” Starfire begged, “You are not helping yourself.” “But still,” Robin continued. Starfire nodded, agreeing that Robin had made a mistake but he wasn’t going to make himself feel any better. “Perhaps some sort of food will make you feel better,” she suggested.
“Somebody ask for something to eat,” Beast Boy said as he brought in some sandwiches, “Robin! You’re awake!” Robin and Starfire grabbed a sandwich from the plate that Beast Boy was carrying. “Yeah, I’m up. Where’s Cyborg and Raven?” The green titan set down the plate, “Cyborg’s in his room getting a power boost and Raven is locked up in her room. Why?” Robin finished his snack, “’cause I need Raven’s help. She looked through my eyes when I thought I was fighting Slade, maybe she can help me with my other problem.” “But would in not be wise to bother friend Raven?” “I’ll wait ‘til she goes downstairs. Oh, and I need to ask her if she found out if Jinx’s message was real or not.” Robin headed downstairs before Starfire could reiterate what Raven had said about Jinx.
Downstairs, Robin waited for Raven to come down so he could ask her about Jinx. But before Raven came down, Starfire approached him about what Raven had said. “Robin,” she said softly, “Raven told us what she found about Jinx and I do not believe that you will be pleased.” The titan leader perked up, “What did she say? Was Jinx lying?” The alien looked at Robin, “Raven was unable to locate Jinx.” Robin shook his head, “This can’t be true. I saw her. She was dead.” That would have meant that he was used thus he lost in his mind. And Robin hated to lose. Beast Boy made a hasty exit while Starfire rested her hand on Robin’s shoulder. “Please do not be so angry with yourself.” “How would you feel if you were used? I’m going to get the HIVE and make them pay, especially Jinx.”
