Demons n’ Dreams
The ride back the titan fortress was quiet. Everyone had managed to leave the scene before the news vans arrived and the only recorded evidences of Kyle was filmed from 300 feet in the air. Kyle was riding with Cyborg in the center of the T-ship. Thankfully he wasn’t asking any questions about what Kyle did back there. Beastboy on the other hand didn’t hold back. He was asking so many questions over the intercom that Cyborg shut down all communications between the pods. The next time anyone said anything was when they were walking into the common room back at the tower.
“So Kyle, what was that back there?” Robin asked.
“Yeah dude, how’d you do that?” Beastboy chimed in.
“I-I don’t know. I don’t know how I did it. These symbols just appeared in my mind and I could read them, understand them. They somehow compelled me to say them and when I did, that stuff happened.”
“Hmm. That sounds similar to mid level incantation magic. The caster has the say the words before the magic can be invoked” Raven said.
“So, that was magic? But, how did I know it? I’ve never been able to cast spells before; and there have been plenty of times when magic could have come in handy.”
“I don’t know but for now let’s not worry about it. We’ve all been through a lot today. Let’s just take it easy and treat our injuries then we’ll get back to those questions” Robin said.
Everyone agreed with Robin and each went their own way to relax. Kyle just relaxed on the couch in the common room and re-examined what happened back when he faced Control Freak. Magic; the stuff of fantasies and he was able to use it.
But how? And why did it manifest now? Ws it due to my being wounded when I rescued Raven?
As Kyle thought he noticed that his entire body felt tired. His eyes drooped lightly and his head felt heavy.
Boy, I guess that battle really did take a lot out of me. I didn’t realize how tired I was.
Kyle slowly slid down from his sitting position to resting his head on the couch cushions. He dragged his feet up off the floor and propped them up.
I suppose a short nap couldn’t hurt.
Closing his eyes he let his mind calm, placing what he was thinking about in the back of his mind. Within a matter of minutes he was asleep.
“Wizard! The dragon descends from the sky! We will hold it off as long as we can for you to cast your spell!”
Kyle’s eyes flew open in shock from the voice, but what he saw shocked him more. He was no longer in the tower. Instead he stood in a clearing lying amidst the middle of a large forest in the dead of winter; surrounded by knights and soldiers carrying bows and arrows, swords and spears. Before he could make any sense out what was going on, an enormous roar broke the silence. Descending from the clouded sky was an enormous deep emerald dragon as big as a double story house; green flame spouting from its maw. As soon as it landed the dragon immediately tore into the army of men roasting them alive and launching them into the air.
“Wizard! Hurry! Cast your spell so we can be rid of this creature!”
Kyle felt his hands move but it wasn’t him that moved them. He heard a voice coming from his mouth that wasn’t his. It felt strange but a little familiar. He could feel the magic being built up, getting ready to unleash the spells full power. Just before the spell was cast…
Ah, teacher. I thought I felt your presence.
A voice. It was the dragon! The dragon was speaking to him telepathically!
You have no hope you know. The student has finally surpassed the master and once I dispose of you, the entire world will be mine!
The dragon quickly turned its gaze to Kyle and opened its mouth; releasing a torrent of green flame directly at him. The last thing he saw before darkness overcame his vision was the men in front of him turning to ash.
Kyle shot up from the couch gasping sweat dripping from his face. He felt unusually hot, as it that dream was real and the blast of flame had actually engulfed him. Kyle wiped away the sweat on his face with his sleeve and took a few deep breathes. Telling himself that it was only a dream Kyle calmed down and decided to see what was on. He flipped through a few cop shows a comedy and eventually reached the six o’clock news already in progress.
Damn, it’s six already?! I completely forgot about my stuff back at that bookstore! I’d better hurry before he closes.
Kyle patted himself down; looking for the communicator Cyborg had given him. He found it in his front pocket along with the ring he rescued from the trash. He thought for a moment, and not wanting to risk losing it again, put it on his ring finger.
“Hey, Cyborg, you there?”
“Hey Kyle, what’s up?”
“I forgot that I left some stuff back in the city. I was wondering if you could give me a ride back.”
“Sure. Just let me finish up my project and I’ll take you over.”

A jet boat and bus ride later Kyle once again stood in front of the book store. The area was quiet, with only a few people out walking about.
Well, the lights are still on. That’s a good sign. Kyle walked through the door the familiar bell ringing.
“I’m sorry sir but we will be clo- oh, hello again. Come back for your belongings? I have them behind the counter here.”
“Ah, thanks. Sorry about running out on you like that.” Kyle walked around the counter and started collecting his stuff off the floor.
“No problem. I was wondering though, why did-“The old man suddenly stopped and looked down at Kyle’s hand.
“That-that ring. Where did you get it?” the old man asked pointing to it.
“Eh? Oh, this? I guess you could call it a family heirloom.”
The old man paused for a moment then folded his arms and gave a cocky smile.
“Figures. After all these centuries, just when I was beginning to doubt you would ever show, here you are.”
Kyle looked at the old man curiously. “What did you say?”
He didn’t say anything. He just knelt down and grabbed Kyle’s wrist roughly and proceeded to drag him to the back room of the store. Kyle tried to shake of his grip but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t. He had a grip of iron. The old man threw open the door and forced him inside. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting but when they did he was shocked. Instead of the small office with filing cabinets and a desk or a store room, it was what looked like a summoning room. Strange glyphs where inscribed on the floor and a chalk outline of a large circle was in the middle of the room. In the middle of the circle was a large brazier, filled with an unearthly substance.
“W-what is this?!”
The old man glanced at Kyle, eyebrow raised.
“This doesn’t look familiar to you? No I suppose not. It’s been a long time after all, but don’t worry it will all start coming back to you soon.”
The old man once again grabbed Kyle’s wrist and forced it up to eye level.”To be honest I should have suspected as much when I found that book on the floor completely drained of is arcane writings” He said as he roughly removed his ring and turned to the brazier.
“Ignita!”
The substance in the brazier suddenly ignited, emitting a strange fume and casting shadows on all the now visible objects in the room. There were many things from clear vials full of unknown powders and liquids, to open books spilled over the floor and even various animal bones on shelves.
“Now this” The old man said holding up the ring. “This is the key. This is the ring of azure flame and will answer all your questions and then maybe then we can discuss our…issues.”
He tossed the ring into the fire and they waited. Within a few moments the fire started to sputter then die out. A heartbeat later it reignited, this time with a blue and white flame that moved as if it were alive. Before Kyle could ask just what the hell was going on, the flame flew towards him. Kyle tried to dodge it but his body wouldn’t move as if it were paralyzed. The flame struck him, but instead of burning his flesh on the outside, it entered his body. It went around his eyeballs in through his eye sockets, his nostrils, ears, and mouth. Kyle could feel it inside him; it felt like his brain was on fire. After what seemed like years the pain moved from his head and in a shockwave, spread throughout his entire body then dissipated.
*Cough* *Cough* “What…*cough* what the fuck just happened?” Kyle said in a raspy voice.
“You truly don’t remember do you? Hmm. Could it be it’s been so long from the last recollection that it your offspring have grown resistant to your control? No matter. You’ll remember eventually, but I suppose it couldn’t hurt to give you a crash course on all that has happened.”
The old man took a few steps back from Kyle. “First, I should remove my disguise.”
He undid the first few top buttons of his shirt and pulled out a silver medallion out from underneath it. Taking it off, a very strange thing happened. His form rippled like when a rock is thrown into a tranquil lake. He grew taller, his wrinkles smoothing out and color came back to his hair. When the illusion was fully removed, a six foot ten inch man stood before Kyle, dressed in a olive suit with a black undershirt. The man’s eyes where now blood red as well has his hair, with the exception of a white streak running down the center of his hair line.
“What...”
“If you thought that was weird, you’re gonna get a kick out of this.” The man said with a smirk.
“Gone, gone O form of man, and rise the Demon Etrigan!!”
In a blaze of flame that came out of nowhere, the man was engulfed and moment later, instead of a man standing before him, it was a demon. Its eyes were blood red and had no pupils. Its ears were webbed like the fins of a fish and two small horns sprouted from atop its head. His skin was a pale yellow and he wore a red medieval outfit with a blue cape.
“Before you now your servant stands in hopes that its destiny is at hand.”
“What’s going on? What are you?”
“A demon am I from a time long since past. It has been over a century since I saw you last.”
“Saw me? I wasn’t even born yet!”
“Tis true I did not see your fleshy mold, but what I speak of is your soul. A glow does it shine to a man who cast spells similar to mine.”
Kyle stood up uneasily and looked at the creature in the eye. “Alright, enough of the cat-and-mouse routine. Get to the point. Who are you and why did you bring me back here?”
“Very well, a straight answer you seek. I shall respond in kind though I shall not be meek. I am the demon Etrigan, bound to this mortal plane by the wizard Merlin. I possess the body of one who betrayed King Arthur to Morgan le Fay and I am his punishment.”
“Merlin? So when you said I have a similar soul, you mean…”
“Aye, his descendant you are though it seems your abilities have been marred. I sense magic blocked inside, that is something I cannot abide.” Etrigan said and stretched out his hand.
“Ah, ah! No! No more magic spells! I’ve had enough for one day!”
“As you wish. Take your things and leave this place. Return here soon and I will plead my case. There are things happening here that are much larger than we, when your eyes close, you will see.”
With a wave of his hand, Etrigan teleported Kyle outside the store, along with his bags. Looking around he realized where he was and, slightly mift at being brushed away so easily, collected his belongings and radioed into the tower to be picked up.

Sorry for the hiatus folks. Life kept on sending me trouble and I just had to deal with that first before I could get back to the story. Well so far it’s going well. Next chapter I hope to explain how Ravens anger managed to keep her little romp in the hay a secret from raven herself, and maybe some more magic will be uncovered. As usual and all feedback would be welcome. Until then everyone, enjoy the spring thaw!
